Astronomy Two small planet candidates from public TESS data: is a journal paper the best route for an amateur?

• Upvotes

I build software for a living. Astronomy is my hobby, and I'm pretty new to it.

I wrote a transit search and ran it on public TESS light curves of nearby K and M dwarfs.
Two signals came out of it: transits a few hundred parts per million deep, about 1.4 Earth radii each if they're on the target star. I tried to kill them in every way I could, yet they survived. Neither is validated.

And today I submitted one of them to JAAVSO to be peer-reviewed.

Is that the right road for an independent amateur, or is there a better way to get candidates like these in front of the people who do follow-up?

Thanks in advance!

What did I see? Is this a comet?

Saw this morning at 7:50am PST outside of Vancouver, facing eastward. It wasn’t really moving in the sky, just in one place. I googled it and it said there’s no comets today, I don’t know what else it could be? Sorry just a quick pic while I was driving to work and stopped at a light, I hope it’s clear enough.

Astronomy Seeking Some Terminology

I admit this question is derived from a science fiction scenario, but I’m wondering what that actual astronomical terminogy would be here.

Assume you’re standing on a moon orbiting a gas giant. The moon is both tidally locked and in geostationary orbit, so if you look straight up, you’re always staring into a same storm raging on the planet below.

Each day on this moon is divided into four phases, and here’s where my question lie. As a layman, I refer to these phases as:

  1. Morning: You get some oblique direct sunlight as the sun rises from your horizon before passing behind the gas giant.

  2. False Day: The moon falls into total eclipse. Pretty dark, I assume.

  3. Sunset: More oblique direct sunlight as the sun emerges from the gas giant before setting below your lunar horizon.

  4. False Night: The sun is now below your horizon (but I assume you’re getting some twilight reflected off the gas giant filling your sky.

So, do these day-night-phases have actual technical terms?

Astrophysics Data organization question for research astronomers

Has anyone ever invented a "good" way to sort astronomical data? I am building a database and currently my best idea is to sort by increasing Right Ascension like a freak. I am trying to keep it pretty purpose/research-agnostic so it can be used easily by undergraduate students who may want to use the data later. I have a lot of targets in deep fields but some don't fit neatly into a conveniently-named area of the sky. My main itch about this is that whatever scheme I pick, I may unintentionally separate duplicates and close companions, or interleave two deep fields with similar RA values. Perhaps the solution in the end will be to add an easily-accessible interactive visualizer tool? Who knows. Let me know if you've seen a clever method in the past that you've found useful! Or let me know if I should just bite the bullet and do something that works.

What did I see? Wide-field sky photo

Post image

I was out last night around 8:30 - 9:00 PM and decided to take a photo facing roughly northeast because I knew that the Andromeda galaxy would be in that general area. I do think I found it in the photo, but I'm curious if I got any other note-worthy things that can be seen in there, or maybe even tiny galaxies that I missed.

Did I possibly capture Andromeda with my phone?

Was playing around with my phone’s night mode and used that one star app, which said that Andromeda was directly overhead. I did have a lot of artifacts and smudging, so I’m not entirely sure if that really is it. I live in a big town in NJ, so light pollution’s decently heavy here.

Sci-Fi How would the night sky change if the Sun were to turn into a supernova?

I know this obviously cannot happen, given that the Sun is too small, but what would be visible from Earth at night if the Sun were to become a supernova? I imagine the light reflected by the Moon, planets, and asteroids would increase significantly in fact, I’m not even sure there would still be a "night," due to the twilight effect in the atmosphere.

Planetary Science If I were standing on the sun, how fast would it look like the planets were traveling?

In this hypothetical I am fixed to a certain spot on say, the equator. Taking into account both the suns rotation and all the planets orbits, would I be able to see them moving? If so, how fast? Would they roll across the sky like clouds, or zip by like a shooting star? Also please let me know if this is the wrong tag.
