Race Shoe Question Race Day Questions!

Hi All,

I used to run in Nike Zoom fly 4’s - but had to stop due to severe pain on the sides of my shin. I got professional suggestions after an analysis, now I run in ASICS GT2000-15, great for my pronation and I have hade no issues since changing to those!

I am due to run a HM in Madrid in 2027, and I’m wondering if race day shoes are necessary or if my GT2000’s will suffice, and also which ones to look for? I like the look of some of the Saucony Models.

Thanks in advance for your help!🤩

Question Megablast losing bounce?

Hello fellow geeks

After being a strong advocate for the Megablast, I was caught with a low guard today.

After my 8km tempo run, I was feeling the shoe a bit blocky and stiff. They have 420km (260mi) on them at this point, bought at launch.

Ok, some days we just dont feel great on a shoe. But when I returned home, I tried a fresh pair that is sitting on a box (yes I liked it that much) and it feels MUCH more springy and bouncy, softer.

The outsole and upper and still in great shape of course, the shoe does not feel bad by any means, but I felt that its good days are behind it. From what I see by other users, I expected it to cross the 600 mark still feeling pretty good, but does not seem the case.

Anyone has felt this? Of course they are still very competent and I will keep using it, but feels the magic is gone.

Question What would be a Saucony Kinvara with a wider toe box?

My criteria:

  • low drop (4mm or less)
  • low stack, need to feel the road, even for a marathon the Kinvara is enough cushion
  • no bounce (maybe a corollary of low stack), need to feel the road
  • gusseted tongue, I have a high arch and need the tongue to stay in place
  • wider toe box, as my little toes always seem to pierce through the edge of my Kinvaras after a couple hundred miles

I tried the Saucony Convergence for a more minimal Kinvara, but the toe box is just as bad, and durability even worse.

I don't care about a shoe being fancy or helping me shave 2 min off my marathon time. My race shoes are the same as my training shoes.

I tried the Altra Varnish Carbon 2, but too much stack and bounce. Little road feel. The toe box looked more "toe shaped" though.

Typing this as I'm sowing back the holes in my Kinvaras ahead of the NYC Marathon in 10 days.

Question my feet are too wide for running shoes. desperately need your help.

Ive always had wide feet ever since i was a child shoes would hurt me especially in the mid foot and maybe the heel i guess?

thats why when i decided to start running i bought new balance 1080 in the wide version thinking it would solve my problem. i went for a group run today and they hurt me badly, i could barely stand on my feet afterwards cause of the discomfort.

what the hell do i do? they were so expensive and not sure if i can return them.

is there any shoe that genuinely has a midfoot and back of the foot wide enough so that i can run in it? how do i find it and make sure it actually works?

please id be so grateful for help id really like to get into running :(

Comparing Shoes Question Shoe Rotation Question

Hi! I’ve been running exclusively in New Balance 880s for all my runs (easy days, long runs, speed work, everything) and want to build out a proper rotation. Training for an Ironman 70.3 ( hope to hold around a 7 min/mile pace the half marathon so I do a mix of easy Zone 2 runs, tempo, brick runs off the bike, and long runs.

Just bought the Brooks Hyperion Max for race day but wondering if I should return and get something actually carbon plated. And looking for something faster and more responsive for speed work and tempo days that complements the 880.

Comparing Shoes Question Saucony Endorphin Pro 5 vs Elite 2/3

Post image
95 Upvotes

I recently ran a long race in my Nike Alphaflys and ended up with a bloody toe. I’m training for a marathon and thought I should look for a different shoe to run in. I currently have the Saucony Triumph 23 which I use for long/easy runs and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 for tempo/speedwork. I’m considering either the Pro 5, Elite 2, or Elite 3 but I’m unsure of what I should get. I’m not super fast- My best 5k was a 7:13 pace and I recently ran an 8 mile race at a 7:43 pace. I’d probably estimate my marathon pace to be somewhere under 4 hours. I’d like to eventually qualify for Boston (3:25 for women) But I’ve heard that some shoes aren’t worth getting if you’re not a fast runner.

I’m looking for a shoe that will be fast yet comfortable to replace my Nikes. Has anyone tried these out that could offer opinions or suggestions for a marathon shoe

Question Has anybody had to size up in the new New Balance SC Rebel?

I normally wear an 11.5 in pretty much every running shoe but the new Rebels seem a bit short? Has anybody had to size up a half size and how did they feel? Thanks

Question Wide gym/running shoes for bunions—what fits these measurements?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Looking for gym and running shoes (separate pairs are fine) that also look good casually. Prefer zero drop, minimal cushioning, flexible mesh, and bunion/toe room. Gym pair needs lateral stability. I’ve worn retro New Balances for a decade but need more width now.

Approximate measurements in cm:
Right tracing: 28.7 length, 10.8 ball width, 10.9 overall width.
Left tracing: 29.0 length, 10.3 ball width, 10.6 overall width.
Right wall method: 28.8 length, 10.6–10.8 width.
Left wall method: 28.6 length, 10.5 width.

Considering Lems, Wildling, Splay, Be Lenka, Vivo, Xero, Bohempia, and Softstar. Which models/sizes would fit? Many sites don’t list widths.

Attaching measurement photos and my current WHITINs. The mesh feels incredibly comfortable with no bunion pressure, but my feet overhang the removable insoles—is that a fit concern? Looking to add more options in the rotation.

Race Shoe Question Azura and the Marathon

Hi everyone. I’ve been training in the Azura for an upcoming marathon, and overall it’s been great. Gives me no issues, aside from the tounge swallowing itself randomly. But I’ve only taken it to 16 (Hansons plan long runs capped). I am noticing it’s been a bit firm towards the end of the long runs, so I was curious if anyone’s gone the full in them, or if you’ve opted for another shoe for race day. I know the pro4 has been recommended as a possible race day shoe, but I’m not sure I need a plat at this point (targeting a 3:45). I ran my previous full in the Superblast 2s, and while they protected my legs great, that narrow toe box left me 2 nice black toenails. I’m sorta or curious about the mount to coast c1s, and the reported stability, but would love to hear what other Azura fans have done. Thanks!

Comparing Shoes Question EVO SL vs Novablast 6

Hi! I'm kind of a novice runner. Been running for about 6 months now. Currently I do about 20-25 kms every week spread out between easy runs and tempo. Planning a HM in a few months so I expect the volume to go up but the pattern would most like be the same - easy, tempo and long distance in a week. I already have good training/gym shoes but was looking at buying a good pair for the running. Had EVO SL and Novablast 6 in mind. Can someone who has used one or both of them provide any feedback and advice?

Question What’s the perfect marathon training shoe mix?

I am looking to get back into marathon running and I have a few half marathons booked in for early next year as a starter. However, it’s been a long time since I trained for a marathon and I’d like to know what others think are a good mix of shoes to wear for marathon training. For the race itself, I would tend to wear the Adidas Pro 4s, but I am a little stuck for other shoes to train in.

At the moment, I just tend to wear the Adidas Evo SL’s (I have 3 pairs…obsessed much?), but I’d like to have some suggestions on some other every day comfy longer run shoes that don’t make my feet ache on those long runs. I also have had the Novablast 3s and 4s, which I feel are a good range and are good general everyday comfy shoes. I’m also very happy to have last season and models and I am not fussed about having the latest models.

I’d love to see what shoe mix others have for longer distance running and training

Comparing Shoes Question Agravic SL vs Evo SL ATR or Agravic 3

I love my pair of Evo SL ATR as they have so much bounce and also treat my feet well as I have slightly messed up toes. I also have a pair of Agravic 3, which I like but they are much firmer. And I don't much love my Agravic Speed as they seem too narrow in the toe box.

Can anyone tell me how the Agravic SL compares and do they have the same bounce as Evo SL ATR or are closer to the other Agravic models?

Comparing Shoes Question NB SC Rebel V1 vs Saucony Endorphin speed 6 vs Puma Deviate Nitro 4

As the title implies..Im a 200lb dude looking into his first pair of plated shoes for my workout days. Pace targeted long runs, intervals, repeats, track stuff, tempo stuff, ya know. I’m by no means the fastest guy around but my current pair of workout shoes (endorphin Azuras) are now packed down and ready to be retired so needless to say, with money burning holes in my pockets, I’m ready for something more fun. Normal foot width but I do have some mild overpronation, slightly lower arches so that’s my big hang up. What say the experts

Comparing Shoes Question Brooks Ghost 18 vs Glycerin 23 for first marathon with a history of plantar fasciitis?

I’m about 6 months out from my first marathon and have had a few flare-ups of plantar fasciitis over the last few years.

I’m looking at getting a new pair of running shoes and am currently leaning towards the Brooks Ghost 18 over the Glycerin 23, mainly because:

  • The Ghost has a more balanced level of cushioning, whereas the Glycerin is more plush.
  • The Ghost has a higher heel drop (10mm vs 8mm), which I’m hoping might help take some strain off my calves.

That said, I’m conscious that with the long runs coming up in marathon training, I might appreciate the extra cushioning of the Glycerin.

I also tend to supinate rather than overpronate, so I’m less interested in the GTS range.

Has anyone with plantar fasciitis or similar experience tried both? Would you lean towards the Ghost or Glycerin for marathon training, or is there another Brooks model worth considering?

Question Shoe recommendations for ~40m weeks, ~8-8min miles

Hi all,

I’m looking to get some new shoes to add to my rotation. I have ASICS Megablast and a race shoe, but wanted a shoe to use for my daily to take the miles off the MB.

I love the megablast (other than the upper) but can’t justify another pair as they’re too pricey. Something with good support, not too firm or soft for the slower miles is what I am after. They’ll be used to run 2 or 3 ~5-8milers a week and the odd longer run of 15-20miles. Ideally don’t want to spend more than £130ish.

So, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Question Running shoe rotation

Is this a good rotation?

I love saucony I have no idea why but I get brand loyalty with anything I do, and for running it appears to be saucony. Any way my rotation is:

\-ride 18- daily runs

\- triumph 21- slow runs and recovery runs with my dogs

\- azura- faster efforts and tempo in training

\- endorphin speed 5- race day

Is this a good rotation? I've noticed some numbness in my foot when I run in the triumphs, could this be because they are too small? Is it even necessary to have the triumphs as the ride seems to cover everything that the azura doesn't?

Any advice on changes or recommendations of other shoes would be great . (Preferably saucony lol) Thankyou

Race Shoe Question EE2 longevity

Post image
10 Upvotes

I just broke out my EE2s to get a feel for them before my half marathon in December. They feel great and I’ll use them for the race, but now I want to take them out for all of my goal pace runs.

How well will they perform if I put about 50-100 miles on them before my race?

Targeting a 1:35 finish.

Just don’t want any drop-off in performance.

I’m about 160 lbs.

Daily Trainer Question Saucony Triumph 23 Heel Issues

Hi, all! Just came across this subreddit and am super impressed with the knowledge and passion in the community. I was hoping for some advice or to hear if this is a known issue or not:

I just picked up a pair of Triumph 23s on clearance at REI and they felt amazing right away. However, after wearing them around the house and walking a couple of miles in them they have given me significant issues on my heel with rubbing to the point where there is already a small blister forming on each heel. They fit me well everywhere else and a half size down was much too tight. I only experience the rubbing with walking; running doesn’t cause any issues.

Was hoping for some advice. I know sometimes there is a break in period and these shoes are known to have a narrow V-shaped heel but this feels like a lot, no? I am less than 5 miles of total wear in but wanting to know if I should just accept this isn’t a good fit for me or if I should give it some more miles to see what happens?

Question Rubber at the tip of 1080v15

Post image
1 Upvotes

On the 1080v15 (left), I’ve noticed that the rubber part of the outsole that curves up to the tip of the shoe (forgive me as I don’t know the name of it) is segmented and is different to what it traditionally looks like, for example on the More V6 (right).

Is this purely aesthetic, or what was the reason for it? I’m planning on picking one of these up for walking and I wanted to know if it had any effect or not. I know this is probably a stupid question.

I used RTINGS for the 3D models

Thank you!
