Hello all,
I found this large Autumn Blaze maple at a nursery in NJ for a great price. It's still field-grown, has a good central leader, and a visible root flare (the photo angle doesn't show it well).
My main concern is the cracks in the trunk.
Do these look serious or like they're healing properly?
Anything specific I should inspect when I go back?
Would you buy it at a great price, or avoid it?
Could these cracks cause problems after transplanting?
I know Autumn Blaze gets a lot of criticism, but I've also talked to owners whose trees are thriving and seen them firsthand. I'm curious whether the concerns are significant enough to avoid the cultivar altogether.
What I love about Autumn Blaze is its incredibly vivid, almost fluorescent fall color. I've seen them start fiery orange-red with bright yellow inside the canopy, then transition to an almost hot pink-red.
I've looked at Red Sunset, October Glory, and sugar maples, but none I've seen quite match that electric glow.
Are there any other cultivars with that same intense color progression that might be a better long-term choice?
Appreciate any advice, especially from arborists or anyone with firsthand experience!
