MOD APPROVED POST āœ…ļø Reminders and Community Goals

Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade āœØļø

Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.

App/Website promotion

For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.

Mutual Respect

A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.

Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.

Community Goals

Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.

Swim safe out there folks!

Discussion The r/aquarium wiki is now live!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!

It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.

We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.

And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!

If you read through any of the published pages and:

- Disagree with something

- Think something needs more explanation

- Notice something we should correct

- Think we’re missing important information

- Have a topic you think should be added

Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.

You can check out the Wiki here.

There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

Showing Off One of North America’s most underrated native fish

ļæ¼The fish in the video is a Gulf Coast pygmy sunfish (Elassoma gilberti), one of several Elassoma species native to the southeastern US. They’re tiny, slow moving ambush hunters and can be ridiculously picky about food really only taking live foods. I feed them a mix of live black worms, baby brine shrimp scuds and other microfauna I dosed the tank with. I’ve gotten a little obsessed with the genus at this point and also keep Everglades pygmy sunfish, Okefenokee pygmy sunfish, and a banded pygmy sunfish but this is by far the most beautiful species I have.

Photo/Video Tiny dots swimming around

I have an empty tank that's been cycling with just plants and dragon stone from an established tank and a couple of guppies.

I have these little dots that are moving around all over the tank.

Any ideas what these are? Are they harmful?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve had a tank with a betta, pleco, 4 rice fish, 2 corydoras and two neon tetras and all died today. I’ve been dealing with an ammonia problem and went to a local fish store for some tips, he recommended me an ā€œaqua essentialā€ solution for the tank to lower the levels. I poured in in a line in my 10 gallon tank and 5 minutes later all of the fish began swimming erratically then I found them belly up. Please tell me what I did wrong. I tested the water and the ammonia levels dropped and everything is normal

Illness/Injury Growth in my young acara's lip

On its lip, it's a small growth, the color of the surrounding tissue, almost like a little horn. Is that impairing its ability to eat. A little bit of reddisness the surrounding tissue.

I'm wondering if anyone can provide a general Nyos Iszler bacterial infection rather than an injury.

Tank is a 60 gallon planted with a heavy amount of wood. I live in southeast Michigan, which generally has hard water.

Help what is coming out of my female guppy’s butt?

no water issues! i can’t tell if this guppy has been pregnant or is pregnant. she has small red stringy things sticking out of her butt. none of my other guppies have this. should i separate her? what could it be?
also more info: she has been pretty agressive lately, but doesn’t seem stressed. she still hangs out with the other fish and hasn’t been at the bottom or anything unusual. her tummy doesn’t seem to be getting bigger or darker. my girl to boy ratio is 8:1 so she isn’t getting messed with by the boy.

sorry about the picture quality!

Photo/Video Super proud of my shitty aquarium

I didn’t really have high hopes for this project- I made it pretty quickly with left over topsoil and sand from my leopard gecko’s enclosure, and a scoop of muck from my local creek. I’ve genuinely been so happy with how it turned out though! Both plant species have been growing really quickly, and I got so many more creatures than I expected, basically all of which seem to be doing pretty well! Here’s a quick list below with everything I’ve seen:
- scuds
-ostocods (?)
- annalid worms (there’s a ton of them, they kinda dance all together while sticking out of the substrate? It’s super cool)
- flatworms (possibly two species? Some much larger)
- big snail (didn’t mean to grab him, he unfortunately died and was eaten by the worms)
- bladder snails (?)
- other snails (tiny, cone-shaped shells)
- freshwater hydra!? (Super exited about these)

I really recommend trying this if it’s legal/alright to take from a body of water near you, so far it’s been a very cheap and low stress way to have an aquarium again

Help Cycling A New Tank With An Old Filter Sponge

So I recently had an incident with my fish tank due to high ammonia and it ended up killing most of the fish in my tank. I’m going to cycle a new 5 gallon tank for the survivor, my betta. My question is can I take the sponge from the filter of the tank with the high ammonia in it to help cycle the new tank or should I just let the new tank filter it cycle on it own and create new bacteria?

Plants Just planted my tank.

One of the Moss balls is a little angry, I put it in too early my ammonia was too high while I was cycling. And the rest I just planted a couple of days ago. I put in one root tab in the back middle, and I'm hoping my 860 lumens will be enough for the dwarf hair grass.

I'm an amateur, thoughts? Planning to stock with shrimp, 10 gallon tank.

Help How do I level this tank?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all, just bought this second hand 180l/78gal tank!
I got it at the same time I was moving so I wouldn’t have to worry about putting it in my boot.

Sadly I discovered that the only spot it could be put at was crooked (the former owner built a sunroom on above an old terrace that was tilted toward outside the house to evacuate water). It hasn’t been noticed before because we don’t feel the sloping and I don’t use a 3 feet long glass to drink water.

The house being over a century old, they didn’t put 1 or 2 degrees of slope but a lot more (there is at least 2 centimeters of difference between the right and left side).

Do you have any advice on how could I level this up ? This specific tank stand has 8 not leveling pads under it so I worry if I use shims only the four out of the 8 feet will be under load (only corners)…

The tank has about 4cm of water in it to keep the gifted plants alive (I won’t be able to change anything for a week and didn’t want to fill it just to empty it afterwards or take a chance of not seing it shatter). There is no filtration nor heater plugged for at least the same period so I don’t know if the plants will make it

FYI : fishtanks in the sunroom is often a « badĀ Ā» idea but it is isolated and has AC so there won’t be sudden water temperature changes and the tank is placed far from the windows, this spots receives only indirect sunlight to limit algae.

Thank you!

I got some new tanks and want to display them side by side. Unfortunately the cupboard I want to put them on is a little short. Would my tanks be at risk of fracturing if I put it like that?

They are 7.9 gallons (or about 30 litres each)

Help Worms in my betta tank?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was looking at my tank this morning and there were worms? There didn’t seem to be any under the surface just on the top and a little under the water line, they moved and varied in size some were super tiny and some were little. My snail was right h fed them but neither Optimus prime( the snail) or my fish seemed to be affected or bothered by them and they are only in that one corner. I have only live plants in my aquarium and use fluval stratum for my substrate. Tank is about 2 months old. Does anyone know what they could be?
