Discussion Is Algeria currently safe from the possibility of experiencing another "عشرية سوداء"?

• Upvotes

I would like to know your opinion on this; please explain your point of view, whether you answer "yes" or "no."

Recently, I have come across some religious rhetoric from certain individuals that could be considered extremist, and I find myself wondering: how are they able to express such views in Algeria like that ?

Society I got asked for a paid service.. NSFW

I am sorry for the nsfw flag, but i simply have nobody to tell this to, I am genuinely shaking, and i have multiple violent thoughts going on.

I (18M) live in this neighborhood where I've seen at least 2 creeps get caught for their predatory behaviour towards children. Now there is this guy (around 40yo+) ill refer to as M , he knows me since he was hired years ago to paint a room in our house, this, and for the last year or so he has been a little too comfortable with his sexual life. He has usually asked me if there are sluts in my university and how he really needs to release himself(if you do the math this started when i was 17 yo),Yes, very disgusting, and i always try to dodge the convo or dodge him entirely by taking a longer way around his house.

Now besides M asking me to get him to enter my university so he can hit on female students, he also gradually started commenting on me, I am fairly more white than people around here (which is considered feminine for some reason?), i also shave my face, and i has been growing my hair for the last year, i am quite skinny too.

Now to be fair, i have always been harassed and bullied for the way i look, and now with long hair, the amount of harassment doubled... I've been getting sexual comments from my classmates and coworkers, but i really never felt this deep disgust, as it was really direct therefore it was more of insults and bullying, yes it makes me very uncomfortable, yet i see these people as jerks and bullies rather than creeps.

Now back to M, he sometimes mentions the local forest, where i used to play as a kid, and it's been frequent through my interactions with him, now I don't want to recite all of our conversations so i will jump to today.

I went outside to buy groceries around 7pm, and went to get something to eat for I don't spoil myself often, and when i was on my back i bumped into M, i tried to dodge him but he ended up catching me in a handshake and starting a conversation, he asked the usual, "are there any sluts around, i got to release myself", forward a little for him talking about the forest, now i am already uncomfortable since he still didn't let go of my hand, then he said something in the lines of "do you wanna hangout sometimes and talk there", and my stupid ass asked for what he meant, for him to explain that he'll pay me to do a service for him. I froze in shock, and started to mumble "no, no" under my mouth, i slipped from there awkwardly in a moment of silence to the nearest store, and in the span of a minute or so, i finally snapped inside a store, and all i felt was disgust, humiliation and rage, i started to think if i should go back and beat the shit out of M, use anything around me to not leave a spark of life in him, but i was in a very confused state of mind i can't explain, it's probably my brain trying to process what's going on, as i don't have social interaction like normal people, I AM someone who is isolated, who doesn't talk much with people, and this is what my once a week conversation is??

I got home and started looking at myself, thinking of buzzing my hair, scaring myself just to look more masculine, i never wanted to look masculine, i like the way i am if not more feminine. I was thinking of what i must be of a shame toward my family for people to see me this way, is this what people think of me? (It's also worth a mention that as soon i left the store i met my uncle who is a hot head but didn't tell him anything)

I don't know what to do, i am afraid that i tell anyone ill be seen as a shameful POS because of this stupid society.

I am really tired and disgusted talking about this, i am sorry for my bad story telling, english and formatting, i never posted something like this to Reddit, and i have absolutely nobody to tell this to, I am still thinking of doing horrible stuff.

I may delete this after a while because i wanted to post it in a burner account and i don't have one.

Feel free to ask questions or give advice, i really need it.

Discussion "How can someone live in a Muslim country and not be Muslim?"

• Upvotes

You have probably heard this sentence a lot, or have even said it before.

But do you think that we, as a society, set a good example of Islam?

Our country is full of corruption, oppression, and misogyny perpetrated by people who claim to be Muslims or followers of Islam. We have traditions that are treated like Islamic rules set by God, when they are actually just harmful customs created by humans to benefit a certain category of people rather than the good of all humanity.

Not to mention, there is deep racism towards people with different skin colors and bias against people of different religions.

We often isolate people of different faiths the moment we hear they are not Muslims. We judge them when they do not follow a certain Islamic rule, and we expect them to follow our religion just because we think it is the right path. Whether it is right or not, you can't force another person to follow it.

And finally, remind yourself that you are not the one who guides, Allah is the one who guides. Being born or living in an Islamic country will not necessarily change someone's religion. So don't think that others are unintelligent because of their faith. Whatever religion you follow does not determine your intelligence level.

Discussion Why are Baby car seats in Algeria not a widespread thing??

• Upvotes

Salam alikoum!
I split my time between Algeria and Canada, and I’ve been living this way for the past 10 years. However, this is my first year coming back to Algeria with a child of my own.

I’ve always wondered why so many people don’t wear seat belts here, but what shocks me even more is the lack of car seats for children.

No matter how many times I’ve come to Algeria, I’ve always been shocked to see children with half their bodies hanging out of car windows, or even worse, standing up through sunroofs while the car is moving.
In Canada, virtually every child, from newborns to kids approaching 12, uses an appropriate car seat or booster seat. Here in Algeria, I sometimes see newborns sitting in the front seat in their mothers’ arms.

Now that I have a child of my own, I genuinely cannot imagine driving anywhere without making sure he is properly secured in his car seat. The thought of putting him in a moving car without one is terrifying to me.

I initially assumed that perhaps car seats were simply too expensive in Algeria, and that this was the main reason people didn’t buy them. But then I went out and bought one myself, and I realized they’re actually quite affordable! Of course, some European brands are expensive and out of reach for certain families, but there are also local brands available at very reasonable prices.

So now I’m genuinely confused. If affordability isn’t necessarily the main issue, what is it? Is it a lack of awareness about the risks? Cultural habits? A lack of enforcement of traffic laws? Or something else entirely?

I’m genuinely trying to understand, not just criticize. For those living in Algeria, why aren’t car seats more widely used? What is it that makes so many parents comfortable taking these risks with their children’s lives?
I’d really appreciate hearing your perspectives.

Discussion 140M for a Maruti?? Only in Algeria

Elon Musk is talking flying Teslas while in Algeria a f**ing Maruti 800 costs 140M centimes

The rest of the world is building the future, we’re still fighting for the privilege of buying a car from the last century.. 3rd world country prices, stone age policies.. this gov is a whole joke

We’re sitting on oil, gas, and natural resources, yet ordinary people can barely afford the basics.. no real industrial development, no diversified economy, declining purchasing power and an entire generation of young ppl with no future to look forward to.. corruption, bureaucracy and incompetent management keep dragging the country backwards

The problem isn’t that we have nothing.. it’s that we have so much, yet somehow we can’t turn it into a decent standard of living for our own ppl

Discussion Questions for Algerians regarding Police Investigations

I’m a 24M American in the process of marrying a female Algerian. This woman’s mother works for the Algerian government, and I’m told she could be investigated by the police just because her daughter will be marrying me. Is this true? And has anyone had any experience of how this harsh and his investigation is or if there will be any major repercussions? I’d hate for her mother to lose her government position, but she says she will retire on her terms if necessary.

Question How to justify my “redoublement” in uni for studies abroad ?

Hello, I’m in this difficult situation where I have to justify the year that I lost in uni while going through some tough times (year) so I had to abandon uni and just focus on my mental health even if I didn’t see a therapist. Now that I have way better grades and have enough to apply abroad, I would just need to justify the year I lost (which happened to be my first year in college) via some “justificatif” from a therapist or a psychiatrist. How ? I’m young and I’m personally low on money and I have a prideful family that isn’t really into the whole psychiatry stuff in general, I have 6000da but will it be enough ? I’m based in Algiers if that helps

Education / Work Job Opportunities for an American in Algeria

Hey guys, I’m a 24M American, my associate is in Process technology (the use of science, equipment, and control systems to turn raw materials into finished products safely and efficiently), I’m close to earning my bachelors in cybersecurity and information assurance, and eventually I’ll want to work on my masters in business administration.

My future spouse is Algerian, and I’m considering moving to Algeria in the future and I’m wondering do I have a good chance? I have IT certifications, including experiencing working in IT, my experience consists of a mixture of working in the us military and recently a mobile security tower company. Eventually once I earn my bachelors I’ll also advance into learning some programming languages, but in anyone’s opinion, what could by job prospects look like? Any advice or suggestions? Or cities best suited for me to look for jobs? My future spouse has family in Tipaza, so we’ve considered that or Algiers.

Question Is "دزايريين" a normal term in Algerian Darija.

Hello everyone!

I've been wanting to ask an Algerian this question for a while, but I didn't know how to bring it up.

In my daily conversations, I try to be mindful of the words I use when referring to a specific nationality.

I'm Moroccan, so when speaking Darija, I usually use the standard Arabic terms (جزائريين/جزائريون) to refer to Algerians. However, I've heard some people use another term: دزايريين.

So, is this term normal for you guys? Is it something you commonly use in Darija, or is it mostly used by ignorant people to mock or disrespect Algerians?

That was actually my first thought, but I've also heard Algerians themselves use it, which is why I got confused. So, is it just a Darija thing? (As a Moroccan, I use a lot of Fusha Arabic words in my daily conversations.)
