Did my brother-in-law potentially permanently damage my parents AC system?

My parents got a brand new Trane A/C system installed in June. The only problem is that the installer was lazy and didn't replace the condensate drain line. I found this out after the drain overflow bobber float switch on the handler disabled the condenser, not even a month after he installed the unit. It got backed up with sludge. So not only did he NOT REPLACE the drain line, he didn't even clean it out. He came back and shot out the obstruction with a CO2 drain gun and it fixed the problem. He also gave me some probiotic tablets to help prevent it from happening again in between periodic vacuuming.

Fast forward to today, it got backed up again - despite the tablets. And the overflow switch engaged and shut off the unit again. My brother-in-law went to Home Depot and bought some Hair and Grease Drain Cleaner, because he said that his A/C guy "swears by this". The really strong stuff that come in a black bottle that has a protective plastic bag. He insisted on using it despite my apprehension.

I warned him that if he was going to use it, to at least poor it in slowly. Of course he didn't listen and poured the entire half gallon bottle in the drain in less than a minute. The obstruction cleared out immediately, so at least that problem was solved. But here is my new concern: I saw a little bit of liquid in the backflow chamber of the drain line where the overflow switch goes. I thought it was just water that we used to flush out the drain cleaner. But it was actual drain cleaner because it ate through the skin on my fingers when I touched it.

Does this mean that the drain cleaner was poured in so fast that it backed up in to the A/C unit, potentially causing permanent damage that obviously wouldn't be covered by warranty? The A/C unit is working perfectly fine now, but I am worried about what problem may be coming in the near future.

TIA for any responses.

Adding AC - contemplating keeping vs replacing furnace

I just moved into a house that has a 23 year old Trane XL80 furnace. It’s in excellent condition and the duct work is fine. I want to add a condenser/coil/drain to add AC and wondering if I should just replace everything while I am at it given the age. The best price to just add the condenser and coil was $9,800 and the best price to replace everything was $13,500. The condenser for the bid that assumes keeping the furnace is a AC Pro X-Series Condenser Air Conditioning 4-5 Ton 16.5 SEER2 10 EER2 Inverter R32. The full replacement is moving from gas to all electric and is the carrier 4 ton #37mura with air handler #45MUAA. I know for both of these heat pump/condensers I won’t get the efficiency with the existing furnace as it will just act as a single stage set up. That said, I live in SoCal and going from gas to all electric will likely be more expensive even with the efficiency gain. One last thing is the venting on the furnace is pretty tight and doesn’t meet the one inch clearance for the b vents so all techs that came suggested doing a new vent and I don’t love the idea of cutting into the roof (so + 1 for going to air handler). All that said it may be wasteful to get rid of a perfectly fine furnace even if it’s old. Long story short I’m conflicted and curious to get opinions from others.

Central AC NEST air conditioner

have some insight because I’m honestly confused and a little stressed about what’s going on.
I recently moved into a condo that was built in 1975. I haven’t contacted maintenance yet because it’s the weekend and they don’t work on weekends. I’m also probably the youngest person living in this building, so I don’t want to bother anyone over something that might have a simple fix.
Here’s what’s happening:
Over the weekend, I noticed my AC wasn’t cooling my condo properly. At one point, the indoor temperature was 79°F even though my thermostat was set to 73°F. No matter how long I waited, the temperature wouldn’t go down.
I thought I fixed it by restarting the system using the restart button on my thermostat. Surprisingly, about an hour later, it seemed to start working again! It cooled for a few hours before apparently having the same problem.
Now the indoor temperature is back around 76°F, even though it’s set to 73°F. Recently, the lowest I’ve seen it reach is about 74°F.
I’ve also noticed some strange electrical things happening:
My bathroom light started randomly flickering today.
My kitchen light sometimes turns on by itself, although I’m not sure whether that’s a sensor issue.
The AC seems to work intermittently, and sometimes the airflow feels pretty weak.
I have no idea whether these issues are connected or if it’s just a coincidence because the building is older.
I’m planning to contact maintenance tomorrow, but I’m curious whether anyone has experienced something similar.
Could this be a thermostat issue, something electrical, or a problem with the AC itself?
I also have two cats at home, so I’m worried about leaving them alone if the AC isn’t cooling properly. I’ve turned the AC off for now because I’m unsure whether it’s safe to keep running.
I’m trying to enjoy my weekend and go about my day, but I can’t stop thinking about it!
Has anyone dealt with something like this? Any advice or ideas about what might be happening would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!!

Mini Split Pioneer Diamante Pro WYT-20 — Questions About Inverter Operation and No Visible Condensate Drainage

Hi everyone!

I recently had a Pioneer Diamante Pro WYT-20, 9,000 BTU, 115V inverter mini-split installed in my upstairs bedroom, which is approximately 121 square feet.

This is my first mini-split in my bedroom in 14 years! My room tends to get hotter than the rest of the house especially with Southern California heat, so I'm excited to finally have independent cooling again. However, I'm new to inverter technology and have a couple of questions.

  1. Inverter operation and outdoor fan

I've noticed that sometimes the indoor fan continues running while the outdoor unit's fan stops. Other times, the outdoor fan operates normally.

I initially assumed the compressor was simply slowing down to maintain the temperature, but could it actually be shutting off when cooling isn't needed?

My Govee thermometer sometimes reads as low as 65°F with the AC set to 71°F, before gradually rising to around 70.8°F and cooling again. At a 73°F setpoint, it sometimes reaches 68°F, while other times it stays around 73.4–73.5°F for a while before cooling resumes perhaps due to recent moderate weather.

Is this typical inverter behavior, especially in a small bedroom?

  1. No visible condensate drainage

This is my main concern. Despite using COOL mode, I've never noticed water dripping from the outdoor condensate drain hose. Fortunately, there have been no indoor water leaks.

My room's relative humidity previously reached around 65% when the compressor wasn't actively cooling and the indoor fan continued running, sometimes dropping to around 55% once cooling resumed. I wondered whether the recent cloudy and rainy weather contributed to this. With the drier weather lately, humidity has generally remained between 43% and 50%.

Because my Pioneer cools a relatively small, 121-square-foot bedroom, I'm wondering whether the cooling demand and indoor humidity might result in relatively little moisture condensing on the evaporator coil.

Could the inverter's reduced cooling output or periods when the compressor is off also explain why I haven't observed any drainage? Or should I have my installer verify the drain with a water-flow test?

One request: I'd really appreciate civil, respectful, and constructive responses focused on helping me understand and maintain my existing Pioneer. I'm happy with my purchase and am not looking to replace it with another brand. Technical criticism and practical suggestions are welcome, but please avoid simply dismissing the AC as junk or telling me to buy something else.

Thanks in advance! I'm genuinely interested in learning more about inverter mini-splits and would especially appreciate experiences from other Pioneer owners.

Portable AC Portable Ac unit for cool air in the winter?

Tried searching if this has been asked before, but couldn’t find anything.

Basically my landlord recently turned on the heat for my ac unit and it’s been extremely hot in my apartment at night. Having the window open helps a little but I was wondering if a portable ac unit would help? I was thinking about a window fan except I live in a city and it gets loud and also rains and snows.

Would a portable ac unit work to keep my bedroom cold in the winter? Are there any concerns? What brands or types are the best?

Thanks!

Edit - my utilities are electricity are included in my rent, so I don’t “pay” it.

Window AC Samsung window type inverter ac freezing up

Hi! I had my AC cleaned on June 24, 2026, because it wasn’t cooling properly and was showing an error code. During that service, the technicians added refrigerant (Freon), performed some welding, and sealed the identified leaks.

On October 2, 2026, I had it cleaned again because it had stopped cooling properly. They added refrigerant once more and noticed ice forming inside the unit and on the coils. On October 12, I decided to check the AC myself and noticed that ice was forming again.

The technicians who inspected and cleaned my AC mentioned that there might be microleaks and that the coils may need to be replaced. I’d like to get a second opinion on whether this is really the case, as my AC is only three years old.

I also live in an apartment, and the small laundry area where the back of the AC unit is located tends to get stuffy. The window is positioned quite high, so there is very little airflow or ventilation in the area. Could this possibly be contributing to the problem?

I would appreciate your professional assessment and advice on what might be causing the recurring issue and whether replacing the coils is really necessary.

Hoping to hear your thoughts soon. Thank you

Is this correct for the furnace?

Post image

Recently had an evaporator coil replaced on my ac unit. Well today the cold weather set in and it was really cold in the house and I realized the vent was blowing out cold air. So I went into the attic and noticed the gas valve was in a T position. I’m assuming they turned it off just in case and just forgot. Furnace lit up so guess my hunch was correct. Anyways, I should keep this in the full on position permanently correct?? Thanks in advance!

Water in air handler (rheem)

Yesterday my water sensor in my attic air handler went off

I went to check it out and saw a tiny bit of residual water in my drain pan that looked like it was dripping out of the service door....I popped the door open and found a pool of water inside my air handler sitting on the bottom of the unit

It was right next to the coil and it looked like it was getting passed the built in drain somehow

The drain lines are completely clear, and I'm having zero issues with my unit otherwise

The unit is 4 years old and the filters get changed regularly

If you watch the video at the end you'll see water coming through a factory screw in the coil.... Not sure if that's the issue just thought it was odd

Any input would be appreciated

C4 22 Samsung AC

so about a month ago my AC displayed C4 22 in the middle of the night, i thought it was just cause i needed to clean it but turns out i have to get it checked by a technician. so i did, had some go and check my AC and they said the freon was low so they added more and also cleaned it. but it still didn't work so they concluded that it might be a board problem. i had another technician check if that was true and they said it's most likely the board.

though 2 days after that check up my AC started working fine again, it didn't display C4 22 and the air was actually cold. it stayed like that for a week and a half until it displayed the error code again, up until now it's stil the same.

what should i do? my first technician said they had requested to buy the board from Samsung and it might take awhile since my AC is an old model.

Window AC Window Type or Split Type (Both Inverter)

Hello po. What is your recommendation po, I have a 5.76 sqm room and I am planning to buy 0.75 hp Kolin Quad Full DC Inverter na window type. Ano po ang recommendation niyo, window type or split type?

My room has an existing TCL aircon na non-inverter (0.6hp). Balak ko na palitan kasi malakas sa konsumo ng kuryente.

Considering po yung size ng room ko, okay lang po ba yung plano kong bilin na unit? Or change na ako sa split type?

Thank you po. :)

Question Something isn't right, right?

So I'm looking after my coworker's dog while she's on vacation and while I was walking her this evening I heard an unusual noise. It turned out to be her ac unit. I don't know Jack about em but I know that one hasn't been sounding like that so I found her thermostat and turned it up so it would shut off. She was about to take off heading back home so I couldn't call and ask what she wanted me to do. I don't usually mess with people's stuff like that but I sure would've hated to leave it running and it tear completely up. Did I do the right thing by adjusting the thermostat? I would've cut it off completely but i didn't know how to.
