Hey yall. This will be a bit disorganized, since I decided to write this in my notes before deciding to post this... keep in mind. This was not written with the intent to argue. This was just me writing my thoughts down after a lot of research.
I've been deep diving astrology for a couple of years now. And while every sign has a meme/caricature version, I noticed some signs are more often reduced to their meme versions than others, among those I'd say some of those are:
Libra, often seen superficially, and as a sign with no inner identity rather than external approval and aesthetics.
Cancer, often directly tied to neediness, extreme sensitivity, and using their "shell" to defend their fragile emotions.
Gemini, often seen as chameleons with no real backbone or motive other than adapting to everything around them while forming zero attachment to them.
But the #1 sign I've noticed is most often seen through their caricature version, is easily Leo.
Now yes, everyone that follows real astrology. Knows that the true core of Leo involves: Heart, Identity, Courage, Bravery, Generosity, Loyalty, Leadership, Honor/Dignity, and Creative Will. And that it is a sign that embodies very admirable traits, since its often symbolized by kingship, nobility and knights/champions. So it might sound surprising or even contradicting to some, to hear me or anyone say that Leo gets the most caricatured treatment in modern astrology...
But Leo has one particular thing that is constantly and excessively linked to them in modern astrology. And it is one concept that actively tarnishes the actual core of that sign in its more modern descriptions... and that is: Ego.
EGO
Realistically, every single human has an ego. It is literally part of our consciousness, it is what tells us "This is who I am. This is what I like. This is what I'm not" etc. Our ego, is essentially, our sense of self. And by nature, every human enjoys things like acknowledgement, recognition, love, trust, and validation to some extent
THE DISCONNECT:
The problem is that in everyday usage, when you hear the word "Ego" it is likely being used to describe Arrogance, self-centeredness, narcissism, delusions of grandeur, and well... egotism.
You dont think Identity, Vitality, Sense of Self, and Inner core. You likely think of all the negative aspects that might come from having a delusional and inflated self worth.
LEO'S TIES WITH EGO, AND THEY'RE COMMON DESCRIPTIONS:
And this is exactly what I've noticed with Leo.
Leo isnt the sign of "ego." It has an immense list of core traits and values that make them highly admirable individuals. However, when you see any horoscope/astrology page, article, or person talking about Leo. What do you likely hear them describe them as?
Expressive
Dramatic
Charismatic
Proud
Theatrical
And lovers of the spotlight.
ACTUALLY DIGGING INTO THESE COMMON DESCRIPTORS:
All of those traits, whether astrologers intend to or not, emphasize more negative than positive behavior. Think about it well...think of the terms: Dramatic, Proud, Theatrical, and spotlight-loving.
Do you hear those traits and you think of a great person? No. You probably think of someone loud, exhausting, entitled or with a bit of a diva complex. And I wouldnt blame you for it. Because look at the definitions of those traits, anywhere that isnt an astrology post.
When someone is called "Dramatic", they are essentially being called someone who makes a big deal out of things, exaggerates, and is exhausting.
When someone is called "Proud" or "Prideful", they are essentially being called self-righteous, arrogant, and defensive against criticism.
The literal definition of a "Theatrical person" (according to the Merriam-Webster Thesaurus) is - someone who behaves in a exaggerated, dramatic, or attention-seeking way, often perceived as insincere or melodramatic.
And a "lover of the spotlight" well, its pretty self-explanatory. Someone who loves all the attention and focus being on them. It often implies a vain or self-centered person who craves being the focal point of conversation and struggles to let others shine.
Hell, even "Charismatic" which can lean towards a positive descriptor, is not guaranteed. Because charisma can also be deceptive and manipulative. And is often used as a word to describe malicious people who possessed an ability to influence and manipulate people.
The only consistent Leo positive you see, is Generosity. Other than that, 90% of Leo descriptors have to come with a caveat or a qualifier. Because in everyday usage, those descriptors lean towards negative behavior.
So tying all these pop-descriptors, with the association that Leo has with ego. And the common descriptor is someone who is loud, expressive, charismatic, dramatic, and proud + with an "ego"?
You basically get a high-maintenance diva with little to no redeeming qualities.
THEIR INNER CORE BECOMING SECONDARY TO THE MODERN DEPICTION OF THE SIGN:
This is what I mean. Concepts and traits that historically been 100% tied to Leo and its historical archetype (like courage, heart, loyalty, generosity, bravery, and honor/dignity) are now treated as secondary things that may or may not be mentioned, in favor of the "loud" and superficial traits that are ALWAYS mentioned now. And it essentially turned into a sign whose courage, identity, heart and loyalty were at the front and center of their core.
To now being a sign whose "core" is just a bunch of traits that implies that they are good at getting attention (expressiveness, charisma, theatrics)
EXTERNAL VALIDATION:
Now, the worst part about all of this is that Leo is now a sign that is often seen as a sign that is completely reliant on external validation. Which is awful and reductive to the sign. As in psychology, people who crave external validation or tie their sense of worth to external validation, tend to suffer from low self-esteem. This constant association with Leos thriving under external validation, harmfully implies that Leos are insecure by nature. That their "sense of self" is completely reliant on external validation. On people admiring them, or praising them.
And thats probably the worst part. That the sign that naturally represents the strongest tie to self-possession, self-authorship, identity, and vitality... is now seen as the sign that doesnt know who they are if people dont applaud them. It has essentially completely reduced them and stripped them off their core strength, their strong sense of self and identity. Not to mention, it has turned a sign known for their boldness and courage to be openly themselves, into a sign thats "performative" and doing things for validation now.
ASTROLOGY WEBSITES/ARTICLES AND THE WAY THEY WORD IT:
I've even seen this in astrology websites. I once calculated the birth chart of someone who had a Leo Moon, and the first sentence talking about their Leo moon said "You crave other people's approval and attention." The literal first sentence. And AFTER that sentence, it mentioned how Leo moons are generous, warm, loyal etc. But it first emphasized, how Leo moons CRAVE approval and attention, like if that was their deeper motive... I dont understand how astrologers think thats okay, when it is blatantly implying that a sign makes you insecure and desperate for approval until you "evolve." That is objectively incorrect, no sign makes you more prone to insecurity or neediness.
No matter how astrology wants to frame it, whether they use reasons like:
"Leos need to shine. So naturally they need an audience" or "Leos are like the sun. They give warmth, but without the other planets, their warmth has nowhere to go" etc
The truth is that Leo has been reduced from a self-possessed sign with admirable values like loyalty, generosity, and courage. To a flashy performer who can entertain a crowd but needs their applause to function. This also creates a biased mindset in which it can describe some signs' arrogance (which is a bad trait, regardless of the sign) through a different light. For example, an arrogant Capricorn gets described as someone who earned their arrogance through their worth ethic. While Leo's arrogance is often described as just hollow narcissism, rooted in insecurity and a fragile ego, rather than extreme confidence. I've seen this bias myself.
THE ORIGINAL LEO SHADOW, COMPARED TO THE MODERN ONE:
Leo has always been a sign with a big heart (which gave them strong loyalty and generosity) and big self-confidence (which gave them bravery, leadership, and dignity). Leo's shadow side was when their self-confidence became so strong that it would completely overshadow their heart and make them become controlling, self-focused, arrogant, domineering, aggressive, and tyrannical. It was the Sovereign turning into a Tyrant. Leo is a sign represented by the Lion. Look at what the Lion represents. Leadership, Heart, Pride, Loyalty, and Courage. The lion's weakness? Becoming too proud, too domineering, too territorial, too aggressive.
Leo's shadow side was never fragile insecurity ovecompensating as an inflated ego.
CONTRASTING TO OTHER AVERAGE DESCRIPTORS:
I know that every sign has those key-words that are often associated with them, like Aries being temperamental, Scorpio being intense, Capricorn being rigid/cold, Pisces being sensitive. But I still feel like they get genuine inner strengths. Astrology never forgets to point out Aries' boldness and bravery, Scorpio's emotional depth and resilience, Capricorn's work-ethic and ambition, Pisces boundless empathy and artistry.
Leo just seems like a bunch of surface-level things, theyre described more externally than anything (charismatic, dramatic, expressive, proud) it all implies how they come off or how they carry themselves, not the sign's deep inner strengths or values.
5TH HOUSE:
A lot of these changes in Leo's core happened when modern astrology decided to tie Leo with the 5th house. This is when Leo, the sign of the Lion, became the sign of the performer instead. And now everything became a show for an audience and their "flash" became more common than their substance. This is when the heart, the courage, the loyalty, and the self-possession became 2nd place to the drama, the charisma, and the expressiveness. Hollowing out the sign and turning the Regal Lion, into a Circus Lion.
PRIDE
Another thing is: Pride. Leo is often described as a sign known for their pride. The classic "Leo pride."
Which honestly? Its fair. But the issue is that when you see how Leo's pride is often described, it doesnt sound like self-respect, confidence, self-possession or self-assurance. Instead, its described more like vanity, as many sources will straight up say "Leo's pride is tied to recognition, admiration and how they are seen by others. They thrive in the spotlight." It is also often mentioned that Leo's pride is sensitive to disrespect. That is literally vanity... not pride. That is hubristic pride, which is essentially pride that is used as a shield, rather than deeply rooted. It once again, takes the core of the sign and turns it into something shallow, a costume, rather than something they deeply embody. And that goes against the true core of Leos. embodying genuine authentic pride. The type that the Lion represents, pride that represents Courage, Heart, Dignity, Honor, Magnanimity, and Leadership.
CONCLUSION AND MY TAKE:
Thats why I believe Leo is the most butchered sign in modern astrology. Its the one sign whose "average" descriptors essentially just describe someone loud, exhausting, flashy and needy for praise. Completely hollowed from any depth unless you purposely search deeply for their real core.
I believe this bias also happens because we live in a time in which introversion and quiet behavior is more celebrated than expressive behavior. In this day and age, we praise the quiet hard-worker, and tend to look down on the openly confident person. We view quiet results as strength, while viewing open confidence and expressiveness as insecurity or overcompensation. A lot of people often root for the quiet one, rather than the one who openly believes in themselves. This causes signs like Capricorn, Taurus, and Scorpio to be naturally revered for their "unshakable" strength and "quiet" power. While signs like Leo get treated like they need to be "evolved" to be actually strong and contain actual substance. Which is obviously wrong. Fiction also tends to praise the quiet badass, and they love to make phony characters egotistical and loud with a need to be humbled, which creeps into these zodiac stereotypes and modern descriptions too, since they love to describe Leos as egotistical and flashy. Since I've seen sources describe Leo as a sign that needs to learn humility, which isnt necessarily true.
ON ANOTHER NOTE:
Its important to remember that suffering from things like insecurity, overcompensation, attention-seeking, narcissism, approval-seeking, people-pleasing, etc are products of mental health, low self-esteem, and trauma. Not your zodiac sign. Every sign can struggle with mental health issues, but we shouldnt give some signs the "pathetic" and "needy" behavior. While others become "hardened" and "cold."
