What to do ?

In all cases, regardless of the country, unionize with other people who support Youth Rights in your country, make a national union for Youth Rights (and you have my full support and help, freely DM me).

In other words do activism to reverse the governments plans or existing laws against teens.

Additionally, always do activism with decency, cooperate with the “establishment” do not try to fight it or abolish it, do not be “Taliban like”have cooperation, peace, legal ways and logical arguments as the way to go, try to convince those in power and not attack them.

Also avoid radical ideologies, especially if they have nothing directly to do with Youth Rights.

This is how they will take us seriously, or else we will just be stigmatized and lose every truth and dignity we have to the eyes of people and also those in power will never change nor listen to us.

Children’s outcries will change things

During the Civil Rights Movement, some of the downtrodden citizens chose, ( as a last ditch effort), to demonstrate their rights through their children! With the help of National news cameras, ( and troops), they showed the world what they were fighting for and against. The children who sit, like sitting ducks’, need their safety provided, and their fear alleviated! Their activism, and their voices need to be listened and acted on immediately. Maybe a national school wide contest, to come up with designs and strategies to keep students and buildings with occupants safe

Rant Why do we have children representitives

Speaking as a teenager in highschool, why do we have grown ups speaking for us. In my very honest opinion I don't even think we even need them

I get it adults think we aren't "developed" enough or "don't understand" but we very much do and adults would be very surprised at how much we actually know life wise.

we don't need adults speaking for us. If I could I would protest about this too. We don't need lawyers for "lawsuits" for kids, for some apps yes I agree, but some are kinda utterly stupid and parents lying to lawyers just to get the money from the lawsuit. Can we kids and teens get a chance to have a voice instead of an adult who will only spill lies just to get what they want And silence us teenagers and kids?.

I honestly think the government should put up a system where the judge asks the kids what the app does or how it affects them in life instead of a lawyer because please we do not need one we have our own voice for a reason it's called freedom of flipping speech and adults are not allowing us kids to have that.

If someone could protest or even kids themselves and like me could protest about this please do, we all have a voice we just never use it and we are ALLOWED to use our voice as well no matter how young we are.

Rant Children also qualify as young people/youth, for children are both young and people. Children's rights are a subset of youth rights.

It's always bothers me whenever I see "child(ren)" and "youth(s)" or "young person(s)/people" used opposite to each other in a sentence. It goes against the set-in-stone definitions of what it means to be both young and a person. Youth is simply the time in life in which one is young. I would assign this as the period between birth and middle age. I consider youth to be an umbrella term for all the age groups considered young- babies, toddlers, preschoolers, children, preadolescents, adolescents, and young adults (twenty-early fortysomethings). Youth is not a distinct phase of biological or sociological development a la adolescence nor is it interchangeable with adolescence/young adulthood.

As for what it means to be a person, it's merely just a more fundamental and sociological term for human, the latter is mainly for biological purposes. Humanity doesn't start at puberty, so neither does personhood. Humans are people from birth until death.

Children are both young and people. Therefore they are both youth and young people. I'd say the latter two terms are interchangeable, although only the former works as an adjective. For example many organizations target youth, although the services may be limited to youth of certain age groups for a variety of reasons.

The real distinction should be made between children and adolescents or young adults, not youth or young people. Children is more in regards to prepubescents well under the age of majority, while adolescents is pubescents or post-pubescents nearing the age of the majority. The former generally have less rights justifiably due to lacking the sexual, psychological, mental and emotional maturity that teens and adults have, though perhaps there are some rights they're just as worthy of as their adolescent successors that we as a society haven't progressed toward unfortunately. Children's rights generally focus more on the welfare and protection of children rather than their autonomy and independence, though they are definitely a subset of youth rights and I think the latter should update its definition to include children if there are rights related to agency and self-sufficiency they too are entitled to.

Discussion Uk social media restrictions

I’ve been looking into the new Snapchat terms and conditions, an app I’ve used for a very very long time, and I’m so baffled by the new government restrictions.

Apparently, everyone under the age of 16 will have their account removed, and 16 and 17 year olds will still receive sanctions! Are you joking me!

Bear in mind, in the uk, 16 year olds are legally allowed to consent, they are able to join the military, get married, have a child, go to work, and live alone. But texting friends on snapchat before 6am and after a yet to be disclosed time? Absolutely not. This is next level control. It’s up to parents to set screen time, that’s why it exists on phones.

I am in partial agreement for the ban, because yes, social media isn’t great. But people are also taking away a big part of kids lives. Teenagers for example: they’re told they’re all addicted to their phones. And what does the government do to compromise? They claim all teenagers hanging around town centres just looking for something to do are all anti social. The ridiculousness of it is, I recently saw a Facebook post on teenagers who built a fort in the forest, some sofas, a roof of wood. And the poster had the nerve to request footage of them doing this for “illegal activity” and anti social behaviour!

People forget that the government that want to ban social media for under 16 year olds, the adults that complain were addicted, THEY’RE THE ONES MAKING IT ADDICTIVE! They make the algorithms, not us. Their job is to capitalise off of teenagers. So instead of taking responsibility, they enforce a ban that will attempt to limit teens connection with each other. It’s like the government don’t realise it’s not as safe as it was back in the 80s when people didn’t have phones. You didn’t need phones back then because it was so much safer. Nowadays, you walk out without your phone you’re instantly vulnerable. Kids need to communicate, and a lot of them do it for fun through social media.

Honestly, to me it’s ridiculous, just another excuse from the government to control youths of this generation. But I’m open to opinions of anyone else who disagrees, as long as I hear a compelling argument!

Discussion Are parents raising their children or is social media doing it for them? (Teens and young adults)

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Parents teach their children certain values, but social media exposes them to different opinions, trends, beliefs, and ways of behaving, whether they’re considered “right” or “wrong.” Do you think family teachings have the strongest influence, or is social media becoming more influential among children and teens?

Personally, I think it depends on how much time children and teens spend on social media and how openly they communicate with their families. What happens when they’re exposed to opinions online that contradict what they’re taught at home? Can social media sway their beliefs?

I’m open to hearing your opinions on this!

Also, I’m doing a survey for my psychology class about how social media and family teachings shape children’s and teens’ values and behaviours. Teens and young adults can share their experiences, and parents are welcome to pass it along to their teens! Participation is voluntary, and I’d appreciate your help.

Rant I f*cking hate the term "iPad kid" with a massive passion

It is just again, another (possible?) Haidtist dogwhistle used to dehumanize and discriminate entire generations of youth, from Gen Z to Alpha, to make them look bad and like so-called "victims" of the anti-tech moral panic like if they were the one being damaged by technology, when it's literally a moral panic. It's also a "one-size-fits-all" thing given that it assumes all people in the range were raised by iPads, which simply isn't true. Some kids were raised with Android tablets or other brands, while others were raised by iPhone or any other smartphone brands. It's really annoying how a lot of people younger than me seem to be using this term and equally being as ageist against Gen Alpha as the people older than them are to them. Please stop using this term. It's not 2023/2024 anymore.

First thing I see in this morning, and this scumbag still thinks she is the one to tell you not to have children if you don't want to assault them And worse, SHE is the one being upvoted. The world is sick.

This kind of shit shouldn't even have a space on the internet, it only spreads and glorifies harm against children. Hopefully this individual will never have or adopt children or even pets.

Rant The amount of dumb bullshit you need ID for

I got ID’d buying COUGH MEDICINE for my little brother. Why on earth would fucking cough medicine be adults only? I don’t care if someone buys it to get high off of, it’s none of my business and either way a teen OR adult could do that, so what’s the point of checking ID? Is it a liability thing? The same for glue and spray paint and stuff like that. If some idiot wants to sniff glue that’s their business. I’ve even gotten ID’d buying markers once. (I guess people use it for graffiti???) There’s no reason for a normal item to be age restricted. And I don’t want to have my ID scanned and give every store I buy from all my information either. I’m sure they don’t mind the data collection aspect of it either..

News [Interview] France school protests go deeper than rioting or reactionism, says Sciences Po lecturer

Thumbnail euobserver.com
4 Upvotes

Students in France are protesting for better schools. But there's something bigger behind it.

Hey everyone! 👋 We're EUobserver, a small independent European newsroom, and we wanted to share a story about what's happening in French schools right now.

Students have been taking to the streets over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and poor learning conditions. Things that, frankly, no young person should have to fight for just to get a decent education.

But what's particularly interesting is that students from more privileged schools are joining those from underfunded ones. It's becoming a conversation about inequality, solidarity and whether young people feel their voices are actually being heard.

We spoke with Sciences Po political scientist Jan Rovný, who explains why these protests go much deeper than the headlines about unrest.

And we'd really love to hear your thoughts: Why does it sometimes take students protesting in the streets for problems in education to get serious attention?

And have you seen or been a part of similar student movements where you live?
