So I played Xenogears for the first time a couple months ago and because of that I looked up the music so I could listen to it myself. However, I’ll see on Apple Music that a song is called by a specific title, for example Village Pride, but then see elsewhere that apparently it’s called My Village is Number One. Or the song called Fangs Bared at God is also called One Who Bares Fangs at God.
Can someone please explain these title differences because it is very confusing to me
I’m working on the engine toolset, including the ability to edit and reimport assets. As a test of that workflow, I’ve put together a tool that pulls Weltall’s model, textures, and scene and battle reference animations straight from your own disc and builds an editable Blender rig.
The rig is probably a bit overkill for the model, but I wanted to push it: FK/IK blending, body and pelvis controls, foot and hand contacts, hand swaps, and the original pixel textures.
I considered a unified skeleton for all Gears, but decided it would restrict their unique designs. Instead, I’m preserving the original skeletons and handling extraction and rig mapping Gear by Gear.
Editing animations and baking them back onto the original hierarchy works. Reimport currently produces a local model package for testing the engine workflow.
I’m putting this out there for anyone who wants to animate Weltall, experiment with the controls, or explore the original motion. My own 3D modeling experience goes back to when 3D Studio Max was still a Discreet product, so I’m curious how it feels to people working in Blender today.
If you find it useful, make something with it, or have feedback on the rig, I’d love to see it. Suggestions for which Gear to map next are welcome too.
You’ll need Windows, Blender 5.0, and your own supported Disc 1 BIN image. The release includes step-by-step instructions; no programming experience is needed.
I really don't use reddit all that much, but I'm excited to see there's a sub for Xenogears. I've been a huge fan of the game since release, but it fell off my radar for a while somewhere in the subsequent 28 years. Totally missed out on the original release of the Bring Arts figure set, but just completed it with Weltall-Id last week.
Creid and another soundtrack are in storage that I wasn't able to locate, but I have them somewhere. I regret that the sleeve of the Elly version of the Square Millennium Collection has taken on a bit of wear over the years. There are some other items I was never aware of that came out immediately around release and shortly after that I'll have to try to get next.
I just recently started a replay using an emulator and a higher res texture pack which is nice albeit a few glitches, and it got me thinking - on the surface, I'd like to see a remastering/completion of the game and 2nd disc, but I don't know if I'd want to chance it getting a treatment or total overhaul like FFVII has. If it were to keep the story and dialogue largely unchanged and filled in the blanks, I'd be down. The PC remaster project seems promising but I need to learn more about it.
I'm not the creator of those pixel arts. They were made by Square Enix team for Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile game. I just made them infinite loops.
FFBE had a collab with Xenogears years ago and some characters had "vision cards", items with those cool animations you could equip for stat boosts. I figured people here would be interested in seeing them.
I finished the game a few months ago and since then, Citan has become my new obsession - I've had to take matters into my own hands... My first time doing embroidery like this so the face is a little wonky but I think he's still cute. I've not decided if I should make Yui and Midori next or some other party members?
i originally played this game when it was new as a kid and got stuck on the series of Gear fights in Nortune during the raid. never finished it and i guess i probably sold it stupidly at some point. many, many years later i bought it through PSN for this used PS3 i’d picked up. it ended up on my backlog but this year i decided i was finally going to finish it. ~65 hours later, i’m done and can say i will genuinely miss the game and its characters. still wild to me that they name dropped disassociative identity disorder lol.
Now that I can create events in-game, I wanted to test it out with a silly idea I had. Just a little experiment, but I might make more if I get some actually funny suggestions. I’m not much of a comedian.
Have any of you read TechGnosis by Erik Davis (1998)? Came out the same year as XenoGears, and from what I can tell it examines the exact cultural forces that gave rise to XenoGears and many other techno-spiritual works of the 90s.
What really strikes me is how works of the era often treated technology (such as the internet) as a vehicle for transcendence, not just improved utility. It seems that, since the internet became "mundane", much of our media lost that flavour.
This is possibly why it's been hard to find other games like XenoGears, even from the later Xeno series. Certainly why there is so much Y2K nostalgia going around!
