Sandy Hook was when I knew 100% that we were a country of piles of shit.
219
u/MitaJoey20 4h ago
That was it for me as well. Any school shooting is horrible, but there is something about elementary school kids, practically babies, being victims that should have been the final straw. And yet, here we are…again. Wondering which school is next. I can’t imagine being a parent today, sending your kids to school every day. Schools are banning phones on campus. What happens if they need to call for help, or send a message to their parents in the event something like this happens?

we'll have our little moment of pretend sadness with thoughts and prayers and how could this happen and we'll go right on with the same shit. nothing is too far because life is not valued in this country

Uvalde happened on my birthday and I think about way more than I want to. The story of the little girl who had to be identified by her shoes because her body was torn apart by the bullets absolutely destroyed me.

Serbs love their guns as much as Americans, but when a school shooting happened in an elementary school, they gave up a ton of them en masse. The whole country was shaken, still is, and not just the country but the whole region.
Not to mention, mass shootings are not a regular occurrence in the region, this school shooting was the first in living memory.
As always it's not guns that are the real problem, although having a lot of them readily available does not help.
Mental health needs to be priority number one, and people need to be educated in it from elementary upwards and see signs and help people with signs. There are always signs. But they get ignored or swept under the carpet, and tragic things happen.→ More replies (4)30

I worked night shift with a real preachy right wing libertarian who would spend the whole 12 hour night shift just rambling on with the arrogance of someone who had never a reason to doubt his own opinion
This was back when the Sandy Hook shooting had just happened and I must have mumbled something along the lines of how the government should do something.
I ended up with a one-sided hour long speech from him just regurgitating all the hot right wing bullshit talking points, most of which I spent wishing i had a gun so I could shoot myself with and end my torment.
After he finally stopped talking he had his usual shit eating grin he always had when he thought he won his imaginary arguments.
I just looked at him and said “that is the absolute dumbest shit I’ve ever heard.” I just turned around at my desk and went back to work.
I didn’t make any arguments, I didn’t have any sort of clever speech.
I didn’t need too. But that smirk dropping off his face made my fucking day.As a bonus, he never brought politics up again.

Our kids are grown, but every adult in the family works in a school. We never get to outgrow it.
30
u/carolineecouture 4h ago
Right, I come from a family of teachers. I know if something like this ever happened to them they would fight like lions to protect "their" kids.
When I was younger I would be so jealous because of all the things my Mom did for her students. She and the rest of the family would knit and crochet winter hats for her class because some kids didn't have hats. She made them for everyone so no child would feel singled out in a bad way. My sister and I would make the pom-poms.
She used to say that some of them didn't have nice parents and what they had at school might be the only things they got.

As a parent, the way I deal with that worry is to remind myself that while this happens way too often in this country and that is absolutely horrible, the chances of my kid dying in a shooting are still way lower than the chances of them dying in some other manner, and that I am so grateful how much lower the child mortality rate is today than it was in the past
I am in no way minimizing or trying to diminish the tragedy of school shootings, and I support any effort to do all we can to make it never happen. I am only talking about how I handle the fear of this happening to my child.
My cousin’s daughter was killed in a car accident while my wife was pregnant with our first child. 10 years later, I still regularly think about her and my cousin and what it would feel like if one of my children died. It is the absolute worst fear I can imagine, and I get a pit in my stomach just typing this out.
So what do I do with that fear? There is nothing I can do to reduce the risk to zero. We all have to live our lives with that sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.
What I decide to do is to use the fear as a reminder to always do what I can to make sure my kids are safe, and that this means more than just the big, showy fears that fill our nightmares. The mundane, everyday ways of keeping my kids safe are even more important than the headline grabbing things like school shootings or kidnappings. I increase my child’s odds of living a long and healthy life more by making sure my carbon monoxide alarm is up to date and working than by trying to avoid a mass shooter. I need to make sure I take them to the doctor regularly, and that they brush their teeth and eat healthy food. I need to always be a safe and careful driver, and make sure I practice good food safety. All of these things don’t run through your mind over and over in the same way something horrible happening to a kid does, but that is why it even more important to remember to always focus on those things. I use the visceral fear of a tragedy to remind me to pay attention to the mundane dangers.
Once I do those things, I have to just accept that what happens happens, and to enjoy all the moments I have with my kids, because even if everything goes right those moments will someday end.

They don't mind soldiers murdering pregnant women, and injuring them to cause fetal death either. They don't care about children per se, but they do want control over their own children They don't want women to have abortions because those kids belong to them to decide what to do with, and they will decide what happens to them. Once they are born, abuse right up to murder by denying medical care, absolutely fine, because again, that's their choice to do what they want with their own children. It's not about children as a class. It's about control. And yes controlling women, because they want to control everything, and because controlling women is a necessary part of controlling children.

“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.
Methodist Pastor David Barnhart28
u/E-2theRescue 3h ago edited 3h ago
They don't even care about that. A fetus is nothing but a tool to punish women and nothing more.
If they actually cared about the fetus, they would be promoting public services that feed pregnant women and get them the medical care that they need. But that would be "socialism", and they'll gladly watch a pregnant woman die of starvation and lack of healthcare before they hand over a single penny.
Guns are another piece of evidence. Just like kids under 17, guns are the #1 killer of pregnant women in America. Still won't change their minds on gun laws.
Instead, the fetus exists to punish women for having sex. Nothing more. Nothing less. If she has sex and can't afford the child, it's her fault. If she can't afford to feed herself or get healthcare, it's her fault. If she can't afford to raise a child, it's her fault. If she is the victim of rape or a shooting, it's her fault. Nothing is ever the fault of capitalism or the fault of gun laws. The blame is always passed onto the victim, and the fetus is used against women to protect anti-women hate.
6
u/gordohimself 5h ago

According to Charlie Kirk, this is an "acceptable casualty". Were there real justice in the world, Charlie would have lived and seen this happen to one of his own children, and then be forced to answer whether that casualty was also ”acceptable”.
Stuff like this makes me glad that I live in a nation where the right to bear arms means that I can wear short sleeves in public. (Homophone, I know, but the point stands.)
That child should have had a chance to grow and give to this world.

Texas Governor Abbott was upset that Texas was number 2 in the country for fire arms purchased. He tweeted that everyone should buy more guns. Kids were slaughtered in Uvalde and he didn't care. Republicans are fine with the slaughter.

They disappear after the baby is no longer attached to the mother they want to control and they don't reappear until that child hits puberty, if she's a girl.

Shot by another kid, who clearly had untreated mental health issues, and was fired up by social media and current political leaders, and who's parents bought him a goddamned rifle.
Rhoam should be alive. Lots of kids should be alive but they also aren't for these very same reasons.

Not a mental illness. A homegrown white terrorist who believed the bullshit on Fox News and other hate media. His mother should be in the ground not all these kids.

Also access to free therapy for kids is probably a good idea (and every other form of healthcare but I digress)

So many of us desperately want gun control. Especially parents. This sort of thing happens way too often and is absolutely horrific
The way our country normalizes violence is so shameful
13
u/Mazasaurus 4h ago
They should all still be alive. This is stupid and we’re all stupid for continuing to act like it’s normal or “worth the price.” It’s not.
13
u/Gingerrevamp 4h ago
I was in middle school when columbine happened, junior in high school on 9/11, starting college when Virginia Tech and my baby started kindergarten the same Christmas break that Sandy Hook parents should’ve been taking their kids on. Ulvade is a few miles away, it’s all so horrific
I make sure to tell my daughters every morning I love them and make sure I know what they are wearing just in case. And it makes me so sad

Add them to the rest of the dead children. A monument to our continued failures.
11
u/MrVeazey 5h ago
When reasonable people have control over the government again, after some common sense gun control and universal health care that includes mental health, we should build a monument to all the innocent children killed in pursuit of bigger profits for gun manufacturers. Just a mountain of kids shoes, bronzed.

All these deaths are completely avoidable but America seems to not care about its people in any way.
Heartbreaking and terrifyingly cruel.
Poor kids and their poor loved ones left with gaping holes of pain and sorrow.💔

u/PinkBismuth 4h ago
It's really telling how fucked up the US is. There is so much bullshit discourse that goes on that no one knows if this a MAGA rhetoric, a religious one, an anti abortion one. and so on.
This child was murdered in a school shooting in Bend, Oregon, its been 2 days and the news has come and gone. The US is so used to it that the fuckin idiot secretary who got fired is being blasted everywhere on the news, that no one is talking about the shooting anymore.
I have daughter this age, I cannot fathom the pain these parents have to go through. They will never be the same.

u/spicystar4u 5h ago
Let’s be real.
Republicans don’t care about anyone’s life.
They love the death penalty.
They want public executions.
They hate POC and the LGBTQ.
They hate immigrants.
They hate free healthcare for all.
They deny children lunch at school.
They allow mass shootings by blocking gun reform.
They do not have your back.

This child looks exactly like my eldest child did at that age.
We have leaned NOTHING in the 27 years since Columbine. Or 13 years since Sandy Hook, or 8 years since Parkland, or 4 years since Uvalde.
We need to vote these death cults out of Washington DC, and stop sacrificing the nation’s children. America hasn’t gained anything worth the price we’ve paid.

u/awolfsvalentine 5h ago

The irony of owning guns, and not using them to stand up to a tyrannical government of fascists, while simultaneously choosing them over your own children.
6
u/Green-Edge706 3h ago
The amount of times I bring up these fears to people, and they respond with the fact that they’re scared too, and they mitigate the risk by sending their children to small private schools.
It’s about the guns, yes. But there’s also a sinister secondary underbelly about dismantling public education and provoking the public’s innate distrust of it.
Do shootings still happen at private schools? Yes. But (without checking stats) it does feel like the majority of them occur at public schools. It fans the flames.
6
u/Annilus_USB 2h ago
America died after Sandy Hook.
When innocent children were shot to pieces and over half the country was still shrieking about how the government couldn’t take their guns, that was it.
9
u/Formal-Try-2779 5h ago
Yeah the usual thoughts and prayers combined with literally zero action. Your kids are expendable in the supposed “greatest country in the world” that clearly doesn't care what happens to your citizens or even your children. From the healthcare system to this.
