REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

My kid picked up a bag of rocks from a store in central Oregon. Are all these quartz? Or do we have something different here?

A friend left me her collection of crystal stones that have been drilled for jewelry making. Most I can make an educated guess at, but these 2 have me stumped.

I'd love any thoughts, thanks

Google said it's eclogite, but I doubt it. This stone is tiny, and so as the supposed garnet drops. But if it's not garnet, I'm not sure what it is. Bavaria, Germany

We were climbing some rocks along the beach, the big rock surface seemed to be granite (?) with some other kind of material running in straight lines across some parts. Some parts broke at this line, and you can more clearly see that it's a different type of rock. Really curious how this formed. What could be the type of rock at the "line"?

Purchased this a while ago from a rock shop in Northern California that (I believe) sources most of their stone from all along the west coast. I cannot for the life of me remember what it is, if it even said in the first place (a lot of their stuff is left unlabelled).

First picture is dry, second is wet. A penny can barely leave scratch marks on its surface, and my nail leaves none.

REQUEST What is this stone at centre parks?

I visited centre parks this year and noticed the paving around all the pools. It's pretty nice to look at, but best of all it seems like it doesn't seem to wear in busy areas where it's well trodden. On the flip side of it being hard and resilient like granite it's soft to touch. It looks like sandstone with silica, mica and maybe iron in small areas? Can someone please tell me what it is. Or is it different stone? Please help to identify?

I've lugged this around for 40 years. A neighbor told me they brought it from Montana, the Dakotas, I can't recall specifically, but that part of the U.S.. It has a greenish cast, and weighs around 10 lbs. I always liked the look of it.

Thanks for any guidance!

REQUEST Found this rock

Hey - Found this rock on a beach roughly a year or so ago, but need help identifying what it is, and whether it is actually a rock?

It is dark dark black inside, with silver metallic streaks throughout (as shown)
The outside is crusted and less black, more of a dark-grey as you can see - It's recently started to crumble for some reason

I'd also note that the dish it has been sat on has rusted, but ONLY where this particular stone is sat, why is that?

The beach it was found on is in East Sussex, UK

Any help is appreciated!
