Obscure SsangYong Rodius: Uniquely Spacious MPV That Shocked With Its Controversial Design

SsangYong Rodius, launched in 2004, expanded the brand’s lineup with a large MPV technically based on the Chairman sedan. Its powertrains included Mercedes-Benz-linked engines, including a licensed five-cylinder diesel and a gasoline inline-six; a SsangYong-developed 2.0-liter diesel arrived later. Four-wheel drive with low range was available, and independent suspension provided a comfortable ride. In corners, however, the vehicle’s weight and substantial body roll became apparent.

Ken Greenley designed the controversial exterior with luxury yachts as his inspiration. The bulky body, sloping rear pillar, and unusual triangular window created an appearance that failed to attract many European buyers. The cabin was one of the model’s main strengths, offering generous space, several seating layouts, and up to 11 seats. Better-equipped versions featured leather upholstery, rotating second-row seats, and other comfort-enhancing equipment.

The Rodius struggled in Europe, where its best annual sales result only slightly exceeded 4,000 units. In its home market of South Korea, it appealed to families with its spaciousness and benefited from tax advantages for vehicles with greater seating capacity. First-generation sales exceeded 100,000 units by 2013. The successor retained the practical cabin but adopted a substantially more conventional exterior.

Could the Rodius have succeeded in the European market with a less polarizing design, or were market conditions simply too different from those in South Korea at the time?

Special Use JTCH-680 (1976): a Chinese bus company that couldn’t get enough buses built its own 13.5 m, 4-axle coach on a Jiefang CA10 truck chassis

In 1975 the Changchun Highway Passenger Transport Company in northeast China had 53 buses to cover 14 cities and counties. Since it couldn’t get more, it built its own. The first one was finished in about 40 days (Dec 1975 – Jan 1976) and entered service in March 1976.

  • Chassis: Jiefang CA10 (China’s first truck, a ZIL-150 derivative), stretched and fitted with two steering axles and two rear axles
  • Engine: CHJT140, a modified CA10 engine making 142 hp
  • Body: reinforced JT661 intercity-bus frame
  • 13.5 m long, 2.57 m wide, 61 seats, 80 passengers, rear luggage hold
  • Top speed: 60 km/h
  • 13 built in 1976–77, about ¥60,000 each

They tested it on gravel and oil-surfaced roads out to Yitong and Nong’an, then took it apart to check wear. The company claimed it steered easily and rode smoothly.

Cover photo: Automotive Technology magazine, No. 3, 1976 (marked “domestic circulation only”).

The last images are lowpoly renders I modeled of it in C4D.

Saw one of these today. Thought it was just a tundra with a cheap aftermarket grille until I saw the bed decal that looked way too OEM. Didn’t get a picture, unfortunately.

Coachbuilt 1954 Fiat 8V Coupé Vignale. Vignale produced only eight bodies for the Fiat 8V, all designed by Giovanni Michelotti. The conventional version and the 1952 "Démon Rouge" show car with the same front-end treatment, but without the controversial roofline are both shown.

Saw this a few days ago, thought it belongs here.

The Vanclee Mungo, a vehicle equivalent to the Citroën Méhari. A polyester body mounted on a Citroën 2CV chassis. The car is equipped with a 602cc, 29hp two-cylinder engine and draws on the PSA parts bin to complete the model: door latches from the Citroën Visa , headlights from the Citroën Dyane , taillights from the Peugeot 205. The car weighs 595kg, 80kg more than the Citroën Méhari. The number of units produced between 1980 and 1989 is unknown, but it was only a few hundred at most.

Custom Sweden's Glenn Billqvist found an unused hand-built Bugatti body and fitted it to a bog-standard Ford Model A chassis and then fitted that with Buick drums. The engine is a mostly stock Model A lump with an Ardun head topped with dual Stromberg 81s. Total power output? A plentiful 120 bhp.
