Discussion I think Wednesday Addams has become my new obsession

I don’t even know how to explain this new obsession of mine but Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams has me in a chokehold 🖤 Like, I genuinely don’t understand what it is about her but something about this character has me SO invested.
First of all, her introverted personality. The way she enjoys her own company, doesn’t feel the need to talk just for the sake of talking and genuinely seems unbothered by what other people think of her. She has her own little world her own rules, and absolutely no interest in pretending to be someone she’s not. As an introvert myself there’s something so satisfying about watching a character who doesn’t feel pressured to be loud bubbly or constantly social just to fit in.

AND HER SASSY LITTLE COMMENTS? The way she says the most out-of-pocket things with the straightest face ever. “My cold, black heart” LIKE GIRL??😋 Her sarcasm, her dark humor, her brutally honest responses, and the way she can insult someone without even changing her facial expression.

And can we PLEASE talk about the black outfits? THE BLACK OUTFITS. The gothic aesthetic the braids the pale face, the dark eyes the entire mysterious vibe. She makes wearing black look like a whole personality, and honestly I get it. There’s something so iconic about a character.

But I think what really gets me is how hard she tries to make it seem like she has absolutely NO feelings. Like she acts as if emotions are some embarrassing weakness she wants nothing to do with, and she would rather die than admit she cares about someone. She keeps her face straight, makes sarcastic remarks pushes people away and pretends that nothing gets to her. BUT GIRL WE CAN SEE YOU

She doesn’t need everyone to like her. She doesn’t change her opinions just to make people comfortable and she has this quiet confidence that makes her so interesting to watch.

She can walk into a room full of people and still be completely herself. She doesn’t change her personality just because someone finds her weird, and honestly, I LOVE THAT. As an introvert there’s something so refreshing about a character who doesn’t feel the need to explain her quietness or prove that she’s interesting.
swear

Her expressions are EVERYTHING The side-eyes the blank stares the tiny changes in her face
And Jenna Ortega brings so much personality to Wednesday. The expressions, the tiny changes in her face, the deadpan delivery, the way she communicates an entire paragraph of emotions without actually saying anything. The character wouldn’t feel the same without that performance.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT THIS IS BUT I HAVE A NEW CHARACTER TYPE NOW. Give me the introverted sarcastic emotionally guarded black-wearing brutally honest characters who act like they hate everyone but secretly have a heart. I fear it’s too late for me.
Anyway, Wednesday Addams, you and your cold black heart have officially become my problem 🕷️

Theory Aztec Mythology and Wednesday: A Few Interesting Connections

We've already talked quite a bit about mythology in Wednesday, but I was thinking back to the very first episode, and strangely enough, Morticia herself gives us a little hint. When she gives Wednesday the obsidian necklace, she explains that Aztec priests used obsidian to conjure visions. And just as a reminder, the Aztecs lived in what is now Mexico, which also happens to be where Gomez Addams' family has its roots. 😉

So I looked into a few things about Aztec mythology and found some interesting possible connections with the show. Of course, as always, these are just theories. Nothing too serious here.

First, there's their conception of time. In Aztec culture, time was cyclical, with different calendar cycles intertwined. The 260 day ritual calendar and the 365 day solar calendar, for example, came back into alignment every 52 years... For a show where stories repeat themselves across generations and events from the past keep influencing the present, I find that rather fitting.

BUT that's not all. The cosmos and the stars also played an important role in Aztec traditions. The stars of Orion's Belt and Sword have been associated with the Mamalhuaztli, a celestial fire drill. And every 52 years, during the New Fire Ceremony, priests watched the night sky, particularly the Pleiades, for the sign that a new cycle could begin. In a way, the stars acted like a cosmic clock, marking a moment when the world might renew itself... or descend into chaos.... And we know that Wednesday loves chaos 😉

And there's also their conception of the universe, divided into different realms, including the underworld, the earthly world and the heavens, all connected through a central world axis. I find that pretty interesting when thinking about Wednesday capacities and the possible connections between different worlds.

And finally, one last little anecdote. Transformation is obviously a major theme in the show, and I couldn't help thinking about the Hydes. In Aztec mythology, there's a god called Xolotl who, while trying to escape being sacrificed, transforms himself into an axolotl to hide in the water. And axolotls are genuinely incredible little salamanders! They normally retain their larval characteristics throughout their live and they have extraordinary regenerative abilities.

BUT here's the interesting part: although they rarely undergo metamorphosis naturally, it can be induced chemically, particularly through thyroid hormones, and rare cases have also been associated with major environmental stress. When they do transform, they lose their aquatic characteristics and become more adapted to life on land. But there's a price to pay: their regenerative abilities decrease, and their lifespan can be considerably shorter. Does that remind you of anything? 😉👀

Anyway, that was my little mythology related thought of the day! What do you think? Could we see more Aztec mythology in future seasons? Could the Hydes have been partly inspired by axolotls?

And most importantly... aren't these little salamanders just ridiculously adorable? 🥹
