Posting in the sub

Sorting it out. UPDATED!

Due to our community being pretty damn great, we were temporarily locked down by admins for not moderating. I'd like to clarify, we moderate this sub daily. It's just we have great people posting great content, and very little garbage requiring very little moderation.

As a 10+ year nearly daily user with only 498 post karma and 1,139 comment karma I am not overly engaged by these metrics...but I'm watching out for folks.

So that being said, we should be able to post at will again. Additionally, in the spirit of the Wiki I made sure it is editable for anybody. PLEASE ADD TO AND EDIT the WIKI. I want folks to have a community curated source of inspiration.

This may be a message long time in coming, but I want to say thank you to everyone. We are a niche community in the big picture, but we are a cool niche. It takes a certain type of person to invest the time and resources to create a thriving, living piece of art. And again, I thank you for sharing.

So post those pics and ask those questions. Show off you success, and get advice on your failures.

Well, this is probably my longest post ever. Be well all...

Should I get a tree frog or a gecko? I’m ok with adjusting the water levels and adding more vines. I don’t have big plans for any fish, maybe I’ll get a few algae eaters.

This tank was an upgrade for my vampire crab colony. I made the classic mistake of adding a water feature with a pump that I thought would be removable/serviceable lol NO it failed and removing it was a huge PITA. hoping I can get away without a pump🤞

18 x 18 x 36 vivarium. Until recently held 2 dart frogs which have since passed and going to get a Crestie. Cleaning out all the plants and such to finally add a thicker drainage layer (previous is already out). Thoughts on if I should use cut out all the foam and redo or should I try and just do some spot fixes? Any hsrdwcapes people see missing? It was a lot of brown before

First Build Reccomendations

Post image
39 Upvotes

I’m building my first bioactive vivarium for my crested gecko! It’s a 24x18x36. I’ve almost finished the hardscape, but I want some recommendations if anything is missing.

I’ve got a a couple different species of pothos, pepperomias, a sygonium, a dracaena, a nerve plant, and a ficus benjamin. Any plant reccomendations?(hopefully I’ll pick up some bromeliads soon)

I like the look of moss, but I haven’t looked into the care yet, so I’ll work that out later. Thank you!

Vivarium keeps leaking (ikea fabrikor)

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’ve been busy with my first vivarium build, converting the ikea Fabrikor cabinet. I’m really trying to do everything right: lighting, fans, ventilation and a misting system. I want to add a waterfall in the corner including a small water section.

I put one glass shelve on the bottom covering the metal, and one in front to act as a barrier. I siliconed every seam and corner, but it was leaking. So I removed all of the silicone and did it again, but it’s still leaking. Now I put around 3 layers of liquid seal (environmental friendly) on all the seams, but it’s still dripping in the corners… I just don’t know what to do anymore.

I really want to do this right and make this a long-term vivarium for plants at least. But I just don’t know how to fix it and I don’t want to redo this over and over again. Maybe another option is a pond liner on the bottom? Please give some advice

[Research/Discussion] What is your biggest frustration with reptile decor & setups?

Hi all! I’m an independent maker based in Ireland working on some new modular background & décor concepts balancing reptile welfare and husbandry needs with creativity. Before finishing my prototypes, I want to make sure I’m building something that actually solves real daily headaches for keepers across Ireland & the UK.

If you have 60 seconds, I’d love your quick input on these 5 quick questions:

  1. Market Frustrations: What’s your biggest annoyance with standard decor? (Sanitation nightmare, rigid/fixed design, feeder insects hiding behind foam, or material flaking/degrading?)
  2. Layout Changes: How often do you actively rearrange or upgrade the inside of your setup? (Every 1–3 months, 4–6 months, or rarely?)
  3. Aesthetics: If you could buy safe, modular landscape tiles to instantly snap into place, which theme appeals most? (Classic Hyper-Realistic rock, Cyber/Sci-Fi Desert, Ancient Ruins/Aztec, or Sleek Minimalist?)
  4. Interior Budget: When setting up a vivarium, what do you typically spend just on the interior decor/background panels? (Under €50, €50–€100, €100–€250, or €250+?)
  5. Independent Makers: Would you try an independent local maker if the design solved these setup headaches?

Feel free to vote or drop your thoughts/nightmare stories with foam backgrounds in the comments below!

Alternatively you can fill out this anonymous survey by clicking this link below.

Thanks so much for helping out.

Plant die off in fresh viv

Post image
13 Upvotes

So around a week or so ago I planted my first viv with plants that had been doing well in quarantine for 3 weeks, and after a week of being in there these three (oak leaf creeping fig, rabbits foot fern, birds nest fern) have all dried out in some form, the creeping fig has like crumpled and dried, the rabbits foot fern is like flattening, and the birds nest fern felt really crispy. I do think I was too conservative in misting it but the last 4 days or so I've misted more and no improvement yet. They all had looked to being doing good in their first couple days too. I also have a bromeliad higher up thats had a lower leaf die. Its just pretty discouraging to keep having plant issues so really looking for some help/advice.

Tropical Tree of Life Vivarium

I've made several paludariums in the past using mostly native plants, but this is my first attempt at constructing a tropical jungle inspired vivarium. Tank is a 40 gallon breeder with a mostly closed lid made of PVC board (small holes for ventilation). Hardscape made of locally sourced wood from my backyard. Only planning to keep plants for now, though I did add some isopods and springtails.

Looking for general advice and suggestions to improve the scape!

DIY PVC Enclosure

I’m looking at building a 6x2x2 enclosure for my ball python, I want it to possibly be stackable by that isn’t a must. What kind of re-enforcment would be necessary? I’ve designed one for an OSB enclosure but would rather do PVC

I am converting a closet into a paludarium WITH a 15 gallon river. Is a 5 gallon bog filter with red mangrove sufficient to keep my water clean?

Some new plants for my crested

Post image

Side note, how is everyone's experience with snake plants? I've had 2 before that lasted for a while but eventually rotted. My crested loves using them so much though that I don't think I can get away without one in her enclosure

Advice please: Question about misting system and moss

So I have a new vivarium growing and I'm worried that not everything is going to get watered. As you can see from the pictures I have a shelf style enclosure (this is for dart frogs). Some of the top shelves do sort of block out the lower shelves from getting wet. The shelves are made from netting so water can drop through. My end goal is to have the whole thing covered in moss. How do I go about making sure all the moss gets the moisture it needs to thrive? I am using the FrogDaddy wet moss. The temp and humidity are stable. 70-75 temp and 90-95 humidity.
