Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q
Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.
Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.
Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).
To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.
Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:
- Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
- Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
- Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
- Questions that are not specific
Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:
Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.
First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.
You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.
Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.
Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Sticky Hướng dẫn sử dụng r/Vietnam - How to r/Vietnam
(please find English below)
Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.
- r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
- Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
- Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
- r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.
About the changelog.
I've made some changes to the sub:
- Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
- Remove some unnecessary flairs.
- Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
- Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Daily life/Đời thường What is a fair tip when for your grab delivery when your driver had to go through heavy rain?
Last week I placed an order via the app, and just after confirming the skies opened up. I felt really bad but the app does not allow for cancelling. When my driver arrived, he deliver my food (still dry) and I pulled out a 20k bill to hand him (~20% of the order).
The driver stared at me confused for a while before i pointed at the sky, to which he jumped off his bike and gave me a handshake and bow. I honestly could have done without the handshake, but i was going to wash my hands before eating anyway, however i was blown away by his reaction.
Was my tip out of the ordinary? It seemed like common courtesy but i know locals are divided on the topic and are worried of becoming the next America with school sh**tings and everything.
How much do you tip a driver when they travel through the heavy rain?

Daily life/Đời thường I want to find original console of these games
Hi! My fiancé has those old video games from Vietnam that originally belonged to his father, but they lost the console a long time ago. I’d love to surprise him by finding and buying the console as a gift. Does anyone happen to know what it’s called or where I might be able to find one? I’d really appreciate any help! 😊

News/Tin tức Do you enjoy shopping in Ho Chi Minh City?
Excerpt: Ho Chi Minh City is quickly becoming a shopping hotspot, thanks to a booming fashion scene that has been promoted widely on TikTok and Instagram as both affordable and accessible.
Chloe, a 22-year-old traveler from Australia, arrived on Tran Quang Dieu Street at the end of September with an empty suitcase and spent nearly US$800 in a single afternoon on clothes.
She planned to stay in Vietnam for a few weeks before returning home, saying: “I was inspired by a TikToker who came here with an empty suitcase just to fill it by shopping here.”
“The clothing quality is incredible, and everything is so cheap it feels surreal. It is like paradise for me.”
Recently, Ho Chi Minh City earned a spot among the 50 most attractive shopping destinations globally in a ranking by Travel and Tour World, a leading Indian travel publication.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Da Nang Resort Recomendations
Hello!
I’m travelling from Australia to VN. I am Vietnamese and can speak the language, after some recommendations for resorts/ hotels to stay in Da nang? We are travelling in August.
Also open to other location recommendations, unsure what the weather is doing during this time.
We have 2 young kids, 5 and 4yo, somewhere with a breakfast, pool, kids acitvies etc but we also love to go markets and where the locals eat.
With family coming we would need 3BR, or a hotel with adjoining rooms or something like that.
Any recommendations?!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Traveling by plane domestically with a cat
Hi! I posted about this a few days ago, but have some more questions regarding paperwork. I’m relocating from Hanoi to HCMC via VietJet - all my cats paperwork is European. She has an EU pet passport and proof of rabies and ISO microchip from Ireland. But when I originally entered Vietnam, I wasn’t given any import paperwork for her - they just let me through. Now that I’m trying to go with her on an airplane to HCMC, I’m worried they’ll be confused as to why there’s no paperwork from Vietnam.
I called VietJet and they said her current paperwork is fine, but I’m nervous bc you never know who will be at the checkin desk. I made an appointment to get a travel health certificate at the regional health office one day before I travel, but then my vet told me I need to go to the Hanoi fisheries department for a domestic travel cert?
Well I went there today, and it was a guy with dogs in a private house yelling at me to leave, lol. I asked some nearby businesses where this address was, and they all said it was that guys house, so I just left.
Basically, do you think I’ll be fine with her EU paperwork and a travel cert from the regional vet? Has anyone travelled domestically with pets from Europe? Thanks!

Discussion/Thảo luận Parents in Vietnam: what do you wish you'd known when choosing an international school?
I'm a parent here and got fed up with digging through PDFs and Facebook threads to compare school fees, so I built a free directory: Vietnam School Scout. It covers 89 international and bilingual schools in HCMC, Hanoi, Da Nang and more, with published fees by stage, curriculum, language of instruction and district, plus a few practical guides on things like transfers, EAL and school buses.
It's early and I'd love honest feedback from people who've been through this:
- What info did you struggle to find when choosing a school?
- Is anything missing or wrong for a school you know?
No ads and no sign-up. I'm just trying to make it useful. Thanks!
