Yesterday noon (Saturday), I saw 150–200 skateboarders, most on electric boards, riding down Broadway during what appears to have been the annual Broadway Bomb.
In just five minutes at one intersection, I counted 100 traffic violations. Riders blew through red lights, refused to yield to pedestrians with strollers, nearly hit a senior citizen, got into confrontations with drivers, and shouted insults at people trying to cross.
This was an organized group disregarding laws.
I couldn’t find a listed permit for this year’s ride. Interestingly, NYC actually obtained a court order to stop this same event back in 2012. Why isn’t NYPD investigating the organizers, reviewing intersection-camera footage, issuing citations, and pursuing criminal charges where warranted?
This is an annual, publicly advertised event. Council Member Shaun Abreu chairs the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Gale Brewer also represents the UWS. Both should be pressing NYPD for answers.
I encourage neighbors to email:
Shaun Abreu: district7@council.nyc.gov
Gale Brewer: district6@council.nyc.gov
We deserve to know whether the ride was permitted, what enforcement occurred, and what will prevent this from happening again.
Why do we tolerate this year after year? Why do we tolerate the other gangs of bikers and ATVs?
