New Rule: No Photos or Personal Details Without Consent

Hi everyone,

We recently added a new rule: No photos or personal details without consent.

Please do not post photos, videos, names, addresses, workplaces, license plates, or other identifying details of private individuals without their consent. If someone is already part of a public news story, their publicly reported name or image may be allowed, but private or sensitive identifying information still cannot be shared.

We know posts like this are usually well-intentioned and meant as warnings, PSAs, or attempts to help the community. The issue is that we generally cannot verify consent, intent, or accuracy. Even well-intentioned posts can lead, and have led, to harassment, doxxing, retaliation, mistaken identification, or other real-world harm, including to people completely unrelated to the post.

We are open to discussion and feedback, but we are putting this rule in place based on past and very recent incidents that could have been prevented had this rule been in place and enforced.

If you see a post breaking this rule, please report it.

Any Calhoun Parents?

Hi all,

My husband and I (gay couple) went to tour Calhoun school today for our son to potentially enjoy next fall for kindergarten and was curious if there were any parents here who’s children have or are currently attending. Thanks in advance!

Cheap dry cleaning?

Need to dry clean 10 wool coats and blazers. Nothing delicate. What’s the cheapest option in the West 60s-80s? Thank you!

Mapped every free, no-ticket Open House New York site this weekend — all 155, with hours in every pin

Missed the Open House NY reservations? So did I. But 155 sites this weekend are drop-in: free, no ticket, just show up. OHNY's site makes them hard to browse, so I mapped all of them, because apparently this is who I am now. Tap the map's name to filter by Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Things I learned so you don't have to learn them while standing in line:

— Grant's Tomb architecture tours (Sat & Sun, 1pm) take the first 25 people. Go early.

— Synod Hall at St. John the Divine is usually locked. This weekend it isn't. Painted ceiling, free.

— The American Folk Art Museum's guided tours normally require a paid group booking. Saturday at 1 and 3 they're free, first come.

— The rooftop garden at 610 Fifth (overlooking St. Patrick's) is Sunday only, noon–4. There will be a line.

— Grant's Tomb and Synod Hall aren't wheelchair accessible.

Closest to us: Grant's Tomb, Synod Hall, Folk Art Museum, Swedish Cottage, Second Presbyterian (W 96th, Sat), Lotus Garden (W 97th, Sun) and Andy Kessler Skatepark (W 108th, Sun).

Lease Swap/Takeover: anyone want to trade for a 1-bed in 80s x Amsterdam $3000/mo

Here goes nothing! I love my current apartment, but am planning to start trying for a baby and seeing if there is anyone on the west side who would prefer to move to the 80s and give up their elevator?

This unit is top floor on a fifth floor walk-up. High ceilings, great natural light in the bedroom (+large), a lot of overhead storage, management company sends maintenance within 1 day, pets allowed. We pay $2825/mo, have lived here 3 years, and have only had rent raised <$125 per renewal (I put 3000 in title as I expect management will raise the rent for the next tenant; this is a guesstimate)

If you are interested and currently in an apartment that meets the below criteria, please reach out! I can send a video of this place privately as well.

  • Elevator building (will also consider 2nd fl on walk-up)
  • <$3.2k
  • Between 70th-116th streets, ideally
  • 1-2 bed (studio also OK if massive)
  • Rent-stabilized

I know we're looking for a non-existent gem, but I think ours is a non-existent gem too, so seeing if there might be anyone who wants to swap!

Affordable grocery stores?

Helloooo! I just moved here from CA, and ofc moving here I knew I would miss the ease of grocery shopping in CA.

With that being said, are there any grocery stores that yall would recommend? And by affordable, I mean something cheaper than Key Food. I live slightly below 90th street.

Also, is the Trader Joe’s on 91st street always out of stock of most things? Or did I just go on a bad day?

Fire in Building on West 104th st bet. Broadway & Amsterdam. Manhattan *ALL HANDS* FIRE REPORTED IN THE BASEMENT

Post image
186 Upvotes

October 8th at around 3 am, a fire started in the basement of my building on West 104th st. Not a single smoke alarm went off in the building. The only way we and the neighboring building realized there was a fire was that someone was screaming outside and called 911. It was about 3:41am when I went to my window to see what the screaming was about and I saw people from my building running across the street in a panic. I picked up my cat and went to get her carrier and all the lights went out so I could not see to gather my phone or money or anything else. But thank goodness I quickly stuffed my cat into the carrier and went to my door. When I opened my apt door all I saw was masses of smoke. It immediately started burning my eyes and my throat and I could not see through it but I found my way down 5 flights of stairs and got outside with nothing but myself and my cat. On my way down the stairs I also did not hear a single smoke alarm and my fellow tenants also said no alarm went off. We all found out the building was on fire from outside screaming. We waited across the street while the fire dept put out the fire. By around 5:30am the fire dept left and we still had no instructions on what to do. Tenants who managed to escape with a phone called the super during all this but he lives in The Bronx and could not come right away. He showed up closer to the end of the fire.

Some of us went back into the building even though it was smoky but some others who lived close to the fire on the ground floor could not go back inside and had to find another place to stay. I saw downstairs dwelling tenants sitting outside the building among all the broken window glass until daylight afraid to leave because their windows and doors were broken as was the front door of the building so they were afraid someone from the street would enter the building and their apt. The situation was chaotic and I don't know where the super was at this point. But the tenants each tried to find a way to cope until daylight and some kind of help came. But help did not come. I was overcome with exhaustion and fell asleep in my apt upstairs with the windows open.

I woke up only 3 hours later in a panic. The following days have been a struggle. We had no electricity, hot water, gas or heat for several days. Tenants were coming and going each day. As I write this it is October 15th and 6 days of this have passed with inspectors coming and going. We finally got electricity but still have no hot water, heat or gas. Con Ed has been drilling for 2 days and there's two huge holes in the ground in front of the building. People in protective white garments have been going through the building cleaning wallls and ceilings and there are air filtration units on each floor but if you leave the building, when you return, you smell smoke as soon as you approach the door.

I have nowhere else to go and am trying to survive this. I am not sure what my next move will be.

Popular coffee/pastries place un UWS (or NYC)?

I have a friend visiting from the West coast for a day who wants to try out NYC food. I have it covered for things like pizza, bagels, Reuben, etc., but I don’t know much about coffee, pastries or breads which they also mentioned specifically.

Are there some recommendations? UWS is slightly preferred but anywhere in the city is also fine. I know the original Levain location is in UWS but not sure if it would be worth it, being a chain and all.

Hi! Does anybody have a pair of tall or short pink, white or purple boots, size 8.5, that they would be willing to let me borrow for Halloween? I'd pay to rent them or be willing to exchange some clothes!

Constant Spectrum Outages

Anyone else deal with near daily Spectrum internet issues? It seems to have gotten worse in the last few weeks. I even went and bought a new modem because they said mine was old and it's still down.

My building doesn't have any other options unfortunately.
