Discussion The app doesn't feel like an app anymore it feels like a website put in the app
I wanted to share some thoughts on the recent homepage/UI update and see if others are feeling the same way. I attached the old UI image for reference to show the difference. The second images the old UI isn't my screenshot.
To put it simply: the new layout feels like Untappd took a desktop website and just shrunk it down to fit a phone screen.
Instead of feeling like a clean, touch-friendly native app designed for quick check-ins, the new UI uses desktop-first design patterns that make the mobile experience feel cluttered and frustrating:
Horizontal Carousels Everywhere: Instead of clean, vertical lists that are natural to scroll through with a thumb, almost every section (Nearby Places, Trending Places, Badges, Shop items) is packed into horizontal side-scrolling carousels.
Desktop-Style Navigation Header: Placing a long horizontal text menu (Places | Events | Shop | Badges | Drinks | Producers) right at the top mimics a desktop web banner rather than a streamlined mobile menu.
Truncated Text & Cramped Cards: Because multi-column web-style cards are squeezed onto a mobile display, place names, addresses, and details get cut off mid-sentence with heavy text truncation.
Burying Core Mobile Features: The old UI had a prominent search bar and quick-action buttons right front and center for fast logging. The new update buries these features in favor of trying to show previews of everything (shop merch, badges, places) all on one wall of content.
It feels like a unified codebase/web-wrapper update designed for desktop efficiency rather than a mobile-first user experience.
Has anyone else noticed this shift, or do you prefer the new dense layout over the old vertical list design? The app doesn't feel like an app anymore. The new app UI doesn't give the UI time to breathe. Before the old UI let the text breathe and I felt like it was fine having to scroll down to reach certain features. I just feel like the new UI just feels like a website shrunk down to fit the app. Apps are supposed to look different from their desktop website counterpart they're supposed to look like an app not a copy and paste of a website. For example Deviantart when Deviantart had an app it's app UI looked totally different from their website every page within Deviantart's app was different their website.
