First Time Competitor - Questions

• Upvotes

I’ve shot on and off for a few years and just over the past couple months have been taking it more seriously. Friend of mine is looking to compete in her first USPSA match and I figured it’d be fun to look into.

I carry a VP9CC with the Vortex optic and also have the original VP9 that has the finger grooves but already came optics ready.

Questions are the following:
- Should I try shooting the VP9 first? Bigger gun likely makes it easier, but I have enjoyed using my optic and it helps when dry firing to see what I’m doing wrong.

- In the same vein, any particular recommendations for an optic on my VP9? I don’t want to cheap out since I’d likely use it as a carry gun as well as I slim down and have the ability to carry a bigger gun. But I’ve heard good things about some of the Holosuns.

- Any specific recommendations currently for a belt for beginners? I would need to buy an OWB holster likely and some extra mag carriers. I only have my IWB setup as of now.

- I see some magazines for both of these guns on sale - for my VP9, would y’all recommend the 20rd mags or stick with 17?

Thank you!

Cz shadow 2 SA dry fire and compatibility with mantis x3

Hi everyone, was wondering how you guys running the S2 are practicing single action dry fire. As this is a fundamental i need more practice with. I'm doing the O-ring trick but are you guys cocking the hammer for every rep of dry fire?

Also I have a mantis x3 and it keeps picking up the click on the double action and giving me false readings, ive played with the sensitivity and haven't found a good setting yet. Any tips on what setting work good for you would be appreciated!

Best entry level pistol for USPSA?

I'm looking to do LO and my budget is around 2600ish. I know shadow 2s are really popular, just looking at other options. Ive looked at Bul, DWX, Kimber as well as the staccato P

Practicing double taps today, any tips?

Practicing double taps today, there’s a lot of outliers because of my grip towards the end of the session but how’d I do? This is from 10 yards. I’m finding my red dot a lot quicker now on resets so I tried going fast today. EDIT: My issue is more with speed at longer distances, I left a picture of my groupings at 7 yards with a more controlled speed in the comments.

Trying out my brand new CGW Shadow 2 in comp

Got to test out my new Shadow 2 in competition this weekend. I'm definitely not the greatest shooter but I'm working on it. The gun is brand new, barely 100 rounds through it, so the mags aren't dropping free yet. The mag brake and mag catch are still tight and just need break-in, which is pretty normal on a new CZ.

I'll take any feedback anyone's willing to give. And yes, I know I reload weird. I'm breaking the habit from a giant 2011 I couldn't reload with my dominant hand, so I had to use my support hand.

First Match Tonight

I’m hooked! First couple stages were a little nerve-racking and forgot about a target in both stages but after that, things calmed down.

Gonna mess around with my red dot sizing. Had a little trouble picking up the dot at the start of the stages. Used a 2 MOA setting. May try a 6 MOA setting or use the multi-reticle option if 2 MOA w/ 32 MOA circle (which is really like and have on my HD).

Either way, had a blast and most importantly, was safe.

USPSA- How to start?

Hello everyone,

I live in Florida, near Orlando, and I'm thinking about starting to shoot in the Production and Production Optics divisions.

I already have some gear (a belt, holster, and pouches) along with two guns: a CZ Shadow 2 and a Glock 17 Gen 6.

My biggest questions are how to find a trainer and how to become a USPSA member so I can attend competitions.

I'd also appreciate any other advice you could give a newbie in practical shooting.

Another boring B class run competing exclusively from AIWB

9A, 3C 6.93 time 7.8 HF B class run
Fast draw but hesitated on sight picture for first shot time
My feet could’ve been spaced out better to get a faster stride for the second transition spot
Should’ve been a sub 4-5 second run imo

Magazine Questions - .45 ACP

I just purchased a Rock Island Armory .45 ACP full sized 1911 and I need magazines.

What mags are the best for USPSA single stack division (8 round capacity)? I have Wilson Combat, Cobramag (with Dawson Precision base plate) and Mec-Gar mags for my 9mm 1911, but what works best for .45?

I've found a good deal on some Chip McCormick mags, for instance, but are they as reliable as Wilson Combat, etc.? I'm especially interested in mags that work with Wilson Combat magwell.

Thanks,

Lee

Instructors in Connecticut/New England area?

Instructors in Connecticut/New England area?

Hey guys. I’ve recently started competing in local matches here in CT.

I’ve taken quite a few pistol classes from various instructors, but they’ve all been tactical/defense oriented and I want to shift my focus to purely competition shooting for the time being.

Can anyone recommend a reputable instructor in the CT or New England area that offers classes or 1 on 1 training?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

24-09 B Class Run

24-09 Tres Cajas: B Class run. 10.75 seconds. 15A 3C. 7.8140 HF, 74.6779%

Competed in my 12th USPSA match this weekend, posted my best results and classifier to date. 26/80 overall, 12/34 in CO.

Missed my first A Class run by .0067 HF. I know it’s a slippery slope to judge progress and success solely off classifier scores, however for a relatively new shooter trying to secure A Class before EOY it stung to come that close and come up short. Valuable and painful example as to how the small deficiencies have such a significant impact. Thankfully I filmed it and have some tape to study.

Movement and transitions can certainly be improved. Splits felt ok, I think .20 was my best, but probably not as big of an issue as the movement and poorly executed wide transitions were. This was a ~27% improvement from when I shot this back in April with more than a 2.5 second improvement in raw time which does feel good seeing I’ve made some amount of measurable progress since then.

I won the Game (Just kidding)

I shot my first GM classifier today in Carry Optics, however I know I still have so much work to do. I honestly think one of the best parts about this sport is there is essentially no skill ceiling as of yet. If you focus on putting in good work you will get the results you want. Going to spend the offseason on my consistency with a goal of mid summer to make GM. Good luck to you all in your shooting journeys 🤙

Why is everyone shooting 16” pccs?

I’m from Europe so bear with me if I don’t understand your gun laws and whatnot. I also don’t shoot pcc (yet)

I see a lot of top shooters using very long PCCs, I figured these were 16” because of SBR rules. What I don’t quite understand is why top shooters don’t invest the time and money to get something a little bit shorter. I don’t think there’s any merit to having a 5” barrel. But I could definitely see something like 10-11” be a bit more maneuverable while not losing any speed.

Is the difference just that miniscule that people that min max everything else don’t bother with the SBR thing?

Local match with a 330 round count... How much ammo to bring?

I'm shooting a local match next weekend, and every stage except for a classifier is at least 38 rounds. I'm still fairly new and have taken 250-300 rounds to every match I've gone to. I only have 400 on hand. Do I need to order another box or two?

Practiscore Video Overlay question

How are people changing the location and size of this overlay on their videos? When I use the functionality on the Practiscore app, I don't have options to change it at all - it's one size at the top of the video, and nothing else.

Looking to get into some USPSA competitions, first time competing and have questions.

Going in with a few years of casual shooting experience, been ramping it up recently and hitting the range around 2 times a week and am getting interested in competitive shooting. Probably open division. Any tips or suggestions? Also I’m practicing with and planning on using my Kimber 2k11, is this setup viable?
