Major advice - Chemistry, Biology, or Climate and Environmental Change?

Can any current UAF students weigh in on these majors? Is it easy to get in-person classes and labs? I want to go to med school, and many of those schools apparently don't like online classes. How are the professors and research opportunities in these majors? Is it hard to get good grades if you do the work and study? I will be in the honors program, in case that matters. Thanks!

Alaska History books/textbooks

Howdy, I am hoping to read about the history of the ghost towns in the interior and western parts of Alaska (including places that aren't really a "town" like the one-shack-left-standing type situations that serve as some of the Iditarod race checkpoints). Does anyone have recommendations? What are your teachers assigning in the Northern Studies and Alaska history classes? TIA

Taking Income Tax class online and need help

Hi, so I'm taking Income Tax online through UAF with Dr. Ken. I am STRUGGLING. I know there's the accounting lab, but they're only available during regular business hours, and I also work full time, so I'd have to take time off work to get help. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get some help?(not from the professor. He doesn't explain things well IMO.) This class is required for graduation and Ken is the only one who teaches it, so I'm stuck.

Thanks!

Does anyone have a metal card bottle opener from the museum of the north?

I bought the bear bottle card opener that was engraved with UAF museum of the north but lost it. If anyone has another one and is willing to part with it I would love to buy it off you as it had immense sentimental value to me.

Thinking about doing the B.S. in Fisheries and Marine Sciences (Oceanography) 100% online. Is it worth it?

Hey everyone!

I’m thinking about doing the B.S. in Fisheries and Marine Sciences (Oceanography) completely online through eCampus, taking a steady pace of 3 classes per semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer).

Before I jump in, I’d love some honest feedback from current students or alumni:

- Is the online format good for this major? Do you actually learn, or does it just feel like reading PDFs?

- How do labs work from home? Is it true that UAF sends physical lab kits to your house for chemistry/biology?

- Is it worth it? Does UAF's great prestige in marine science actually translate well to the online version?

I want to make sure I’ll come out of this knowing how to be a proper oceanographer. Thanks for any tips or honest reviews!

Potential Exchange

Hello, I am thinking of doing a semester abroad at UAF for 1st semester of 2027. and was wondering what the campus life is like. What is the accommodation cost. the cost of living (Groceries, meal plan, etc). What would be the average cost of books for 1 semester. And is there any tips that you would reccommend for me. (Zoology Student). Also if anyone has taken classes in the field/area of study (mostly biology/Wildlife, ecology, evolution, etc). How are the classes stuctured? What did you like and or not like about the campus/campus life?

Trying to get real Alaskan opinions on PFD, cost of living, etc.

Hey everyone, I’m James. I’m working with Alaska Neighbor Network trying to get a better sense of what regular Alaskans actually think about the stuff that affects us like PFD, property taxes, cost of living, resource management, all of it. Not just what politicians in Juneau are saying.

We’re looking for a few people to share their thoughts and talk about these issues with friends and family. We’re paying up to $250+ for your time. No experience needed. Just a phone, your own thoughts and a willingness to talk to your people.

If you’re interested, you can sign up here: https://www.akneighbor.org/sign-up.

Happy to answer any questions.

Free aerospace fellowship opportunity for UAF undergrads!

UAF students interested in aerospace should consider applying for the Brooke Owens Fellowship, a nonprofit fellowship open to undergraduate women and gender minorities pursuing careers in aerospace. The entire program (including the application) is completely free, and applications are due October 4.

Selected Fellows receive:

  • Executive mentorship from aerospace leaders (think CEOs and astronauts!)
  • Career-development resources
  • A supportive community of aerospace students and professionals
  • A three-day all-expenses-paid summit in July in an aerospace hub city

Review the FAQs and application early so you have time to request recommendation letters and prepare your application.

We’re also holding virtual information sessions (EDT)

  • Sunday, September 13 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Monday, September 28 at 10:00 p.m.

Register for an information session here.

Questions are welcome, we hope to see applications from UAF!

Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program?

I'm graduating high school this year and just got accepted into UAF (yay!) for the major mentioned above and was wondering if anyone has taken it and what their thoughts on it are. Side note - I was born and raised in California so I'm definitely unprepared for Alaskan weather-any advice on that would be awesome too! I'm also going to apply to anchorage and southeast when they open (as well as a few Cal States), just need some help deciding on where to go :>

Where should I get my hair done?

does anybody know a good hair salon that isn’t too expensive? I know there is the barbershop on campus but from the website it looks like he only does men’s hair and the guy I know who went there said he wasn’t a big fan.

MS EE?

Hey everyone, I'm a soon to be graduate BS Computer Science / BS Computer Sys Eng at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Anyways I'm heavily considering a career switch to EE. I heavily enjoy the EE courses over here.

However, I do not want to go through another BS in EE but don't feel confident enough to try and compete for EE jobs off of my CSE degree. So I'm considering a MS in EE, and the only option is UAF.

I'm a little concerned about cost since I'm based in Anchorage and moving to Fairbanks means I'd have to find a place to stay. I've talked with my financial aid office and some of my scholarships will roll over so I'm set for tuition first year. I'm pretty fast too, so I don't think it'll take me that many years. Most concerned about housing.

Anyways, I'd appreciate insight on whether switching to EE is even a good idea? Whether it'll be worth doing so at UAF and if there's any way to get funding for the program?

And how difficult is it to be admitted?

TIA.

Does the eCampus diploma specify online?

Hi, I'm considering applying to UA Fairbanks to finish my degree through the eCampus. Has anyone else done this, and does the diploma say online on it?
