Seeking Advice GLP-1s and insurance

My insurance is refusing to cover my ozempic prescription. My blood sugars feel so unmanageable, no matter what I eat. I got put on Omnipods earlier this year and they’re great, but they run out of insulin faster and faster. I started my first office job this year and sitting down all day has wrecked my insulin sensitivity. It’s never been good, but now the only time I’m below 100 is when I’m asleep. I put all my hope on this ozempic prescription and now it seems like I won’t be able to get it.

Is there anything I can do? I’ve asked my doctor to talk to them again. Is it worth trying to contact my insurance? I’m so afraid that they’re going to take my pumps away if they keep lasting less and less time.

Ironically, the ozempic was intended to help me keep my pump covered by insurance.

Any advice is welcome. Any commiserating about this fuckass disease or evil insurance companies is also welcome.

Edit: I just remembered I have some old tresiba (long-lasting) insulin in the fridge that is only a little expired. Is it worth taking a small amount daily so I can keep my pump covered by insurance?

Not sure if this is the right flair, but I’ve just had blood tests done, something I am absolutely PETRIFIED of having done but I find it so interesting that you can literally see the time that I got into the Drs and my fight or flight kicked in 😂 now waiting for the silly thing to come down (or crash) now that I’ve calmed down

Question Seeking advice as middle aged t1d living with elderly hover-parent

I need advice. I with my partner made the decision about a year ago to allow my elderly mother to live with us so we could take care of her.

Since day 1, she has offered me food. Her idea of nutrition is and always has been entirely non-existent, other than “eat your vegetables.” So she will take things like pasta and stick a few bits of vegetables in it and think it’s healthy.

Her understanding of type 1 diabetes is even more non-existent: “It says low sugar!”

On day 1, I respectfully asked her to not do that as I prepare all of my foods so I can calculate the carbs and dose insulin accordingly.

This has progressed for nearly a year. I have tried explaining that I cannot eat what I want when I want and that I eat what I must when I must.

I have explained that insulin can kill me, so taking large doses to cover huge amounts of carbs is dangerous and could be fatal.

I explained that my mental health suffers from large constant glucose swings.

I’ve tried just saying no repeatedly thinking after a few months of saying no she might get it.

I have snapped a few times and yelled and felt terrible for having done so.

We are now a year in. Every day, 5 or more times a day, she offers me something that I am not going to eat and acts pouty if I say no.

As an extension of this, when I am preparing my food, she repeatedly offers suggestions, tells me I should add x, try y. Asks if she can help me cook. Etc.

I have spent 20 years working out a system where I can prepare my own food and eat it and with the cgm/insulin pump I can just barely not die sometimes and have brief moments of thriving.

Cooking is math intensive to me: carb counting, understanding the other macros, etc. Deciding how much and when to bolus based on what I’ve built. It has to be my free space to cook and think about what I’m doing. Her unhelpful suggestions and offers while I’m cooking send me into a state where I can’t think clearly.

I have tried everything to get her to stop this, too, but nothing works.

I have found myself eating at restaurants or fast food just because it is easier to predict the carb counts there and not undergo the pain it brings me to try to cook at home.

Other things she doesn’t understand that irritate me and generally make care difficult include comments like “you should get the saw and cut these branches down” when my glucose is 110 and and I have 1U of onboard insulin when I know that will 100% end up with a hypo.

90% of the time she tells me to do something like that, I look at my watch, say “well, my glucose is 110 and if I do that right now I’ll definitely end up with a hypo, but I’ll try to work it in.” The other 10% I give in and I spend the rest of the day chasing numbers.

She notices when I have hypos as well and comments on them. I told her since day 1 that we don’t JUDGE highs and lows; we steer. If we judge constantly, we burn out.

A year inX I am burnt out as fuck. I can’t cook. I can’t think. I can’t find relaxation. I can’t be anything but frustrated 100% of my time.

My partner says it’s selfish. I don’t think anyone who isn’t a type 1 diabetic could ever understand, so I don’t blame her for thinking that. I have asked for my partner’s help and have not received it. I have given up on that.

My mother is definitely in age related cognitive decline but we don’t have a diagnosis of anything beyond that. Getting her to just go to a doctor is a fight.

Short of moving her out to a senior care facility or me moving out and leaving my partner and her and my life as I know it behind to focus on my own care, what the hell can I do?

I am open to any and all ideas and curious if anyone else has had to take on the burden of caring for their own type 1 diabetes and an elderly parent who seems to be trying to kill them and made it through it with their sanity intact and if so how.

TIA

Seeking Support Feel so deflated

In my 30s, had T1D since 12. Why is working so stressful, every company I work for just don't understand. Been told multiple times that I cannot have a hypo in the morning and be late and other stupid comments like, the company just wants you to be better.

I want to work and have my own income but am constantly having my job threatened when I have issues with my health.

Anyone else been in this situation and could give some advice, it would be much appreciated 👏

Seeking Advice I’m so burnt out and lonely.

I’m so so so tired. I’m just curious how you guys manage these sleep deprived days where you feel like you could cry over spilled milk and it feels like nothing is okay? I know they’re just symptoms of a shitty diabetes day because I have my period but it feels too real sometimes. Any advice on how to make these days more bearable is so so welcome.

Seeking Advice Struggling to find answers

Hello! I am 26M exercise regularly and am overall very healthy and take good care of myself. I have good time in range and my A1C has been under 7 for years.

About 6 months ago I was working on my car and had severe chest pain and symptoms of a heart attack to the point I called 911. In the ambulance my BP was well over 200/100 for the entire ride and at the hospital with a HR of 150+. They ran a ton of tests which I’m thankful for that all came back clear excluding my potassium which they believe was the culprit it was 2.8. They sent me home and told me to eat some bananas.

Since then I have had an unreal amount of heart and other random symptoms including Chest pain, left arm and neck pain, chest tightness, extreme shortness of breath, tingling in hand and head, headaches, neck pain, irregular bowel movements, palpitations, EXTREME dizziness, abdomen pain, about everything I can think of so far but it’s been more. The neck, chest, left arm pain, and dizziness are daily since the potassium incident.

Tests that I have done so far: numerous EKGs, stress test, echocardiogram, holter monitor, t tropin numerous times, d-dimer numerous times, head and neck MRI, 3 chest X-Rays, 2 abdomen CTs, 2 head CTs, EMG, and so much bloodwork I’m not even sure I could list it all here.

After all of this testing I have 0 answers, not a single test showed anything out of place, including potassium has been perfect since, I feel horrible every single day dizzy to the point I think I’m going to pass out, weird eye movements, stabbing pain in my chest left arm and neck along with squeezing pain every single day. I normally wouldn’t consult Reddit but after 3 ER visits and meeting with 12+ doctors and getting no answers I’m getting desperate, I have never had a panic attack in my life or have really ever had anxiety but I feel like I’m starting to get brushed off as that which makes absolutely no sense to me as the being worried about the symptoms does not happen till I have chest pain to the point I’m dizzy.

I know this is a long shot asking here but if anyone has any advise or experience with this I would kill for some insight or answers. TIA.

Health Insurance Turning 26 and not sure what to expect of insurance change

I’m getting kicked off of my parents insurance the end of November due to aging off the plan. Going from Kaiser to Cigna likely with my current job. I am waiting to hear back on a different job interview, but with that one I’d be without insurance for a month during the 30 day period (not sure what their health insurance is through). I’ve just been afraid of this day my whole life and not sure what to expect at all so generally nervous when I don’t have a clear plan, but when it’s surrounding my health and survival it’s definitely worse. Is there things I need to collect/prepare from Kaiser? How do I even get in contact with a specialist asap to get everything set up again once I am insured? I know I should stock up on supplies now at least but that’s about it.

Question First DKA 10 days ago, feeling pretty horrific. Normal?

Hey,

So I'm a poorly controlled type 1 due to mental health issues, tummy issues and ADHD. I've suffered an extensive amount of grief in the last 12 months and completely neglected my diabetes. I would never forget my basal but I just would get high on THC and kinda ate whatever and was bolusing whatever and often ran my sugars 18-27mmol. Ironically when I had DKA I did not have super high sugars, i just wasn't eating much and didn't need much bolus. I was still taking Lantus as normal (about 20-25u). My birthday week was horrific, and the stress/emotional stuff pushed me too far and I ended up in DKA after 2 friends betrayed me, and my estranged mother was trying to reach out after a year of ghosting me for a man that abused me.

I also had some rebound ketones 3 days ago where it went up to 1.7 (again, from struggling with food) but I was able to flush it out with water and insulin.

I'm dealing with the following problems post DKA and just wondering if it's normal.

I feel weak, like I have a hangover or something.

I keep waking up early morning with hypo symptoms and palpitations, this eases with drinking water.

I feel shaky and like I have no energy. It comes and goes but I almost passed out walking to the dentist on Monday morning which was only 5 minutes around the corner.

My muscles feel heavy and my stomach hurts after I eat. (I have chronic gastritis and it appears to be flaring up)

My appetite is not good but I'm eating more and more each day.

I have insulin resistance too, but my period is also a few weeks overdue.

I've been drinking a lot of electrolytes and keep bolusing for my sugars being a bit on the high side but overall I've managed to lower my average glucose from 20mmol to 14mmol in 7 days and I'm getting confident with my regime again.

Is it normal to feel like absolute dog shit for a while after DKA? I'm so bloated and gassy, like my stomach has shrunk or something and I'm losing weight. Eating is not enjoyable and I just feel so heavy and like my muscles have nothing. I'm able to do some household chores but I get out of breath easily.

Some of this could be hormonal related as I have PMDD and get flu like body aches and upset stomach before my period.

I'm back to work now but just doing a few hours a day. I work from home.

The senior doctor at the hospital educated me that ketones aren't always high sugars - it's lack of insulin and I never knew that. So I'm slowly increasing my basal each day to keep the ketones away.

What I also don't understand is how in the past, I've had stomach bugs/depression where I didn't eat for days and didn't bolus at all, only basal... Yet I did not go into DKA.

Rant confession

sometimes, i get so sick and tired of waking up in the middle of the night from a low. i admit, usually i wake up in the middle of the night for no reason, which i pretty much always have done (my doctor is not concerned about it). unfortunately, the major difference is i can roll over and go back to sleep.

at some point, when i was 19, i got really upset at the “waking up in the middle of the night for a low blood sugar” thing, so i decided to do something kind of stupid: sleeping about 3 hours with my insulin delivery suspended. it was 3 hours because i typically sleep in 2-3.5 hour intervals, and it actually worked out pretty well for me. i know it’s stupid, but every once in a while, i really just wanted to sleep without getting woken up and having to be awake for at least 15 minutes. i worked 60-70 hours a week on top of being a full time college student so it really pissed me off having to spend what usually wound up being 30 minutes dealing with a low and then trying to go back to sleep because i had to get up so i couldn’t really roll back over. yes, i tried keeping my snacks by the bed, but then the anxiety of having a low would keep me up for another few minutes so i was screwed either way. at least when i woke up randomly, i didn’t have to do anything. the low blood sugars always seemed to interrupt when i finally hit good sleep.

i think i only did this once that led to me waking up above 250 or something like that. usually i woke up kind of high but not unbearably high (like, 180-200), but i’d resume my insulin my next wake up. to this day, i’m a “small snack before bed with no bolus” guy, so to me i reasoned it because it would go up to about what my blood sugar was when i went to bed from my snack. i managed to sleep through that damn delivery suspended alarm (the low blood sugar one is another beast, i promise).

i know it’s stupid. i needed to confess that this is something i used to do. i was, unfortunately, desperate to wake up at night less than i already was. in my defense, i went from waking up 2-3 times in a night to 4-5 times. with the amount of work on my plate that just was too much. i wasn’t honeymooning when i did this either and i think it’s a miracle that i didn’t wake up at 300 regularly because i absolutely would now. i had an early morning low and it crossed my mind that i used to do this and god, i wish i could just pause my blood sugar and sleep through the night instead.

once again: don’t do this. i am aware this is dumb and i was aware it was dumb then. i was literally just desperate for a less interrupted sleep. i did this after waking up low a few nights in a row, too. at the end of the day, i knew the risks, and i got less interrupted sleep which is what i wanted more than anything. i genuinely think i would’ve killed to have a “normal” (for me) night’s sleep.

edit for clarity: when i was nineteen, a few years ago, i am in my 20s now, i was extremely overwhelmed with my workload and frustrated and i just kinda did the first thing i thought of to fix the problem of me waking up more times in a night than i was. my settings are fine now. we got them fixed. i wouldn’t do this now and i didn’t do it all too often then. i had issues waking up in the middle of the night repeatedly before my diagnosis and my doctor is not concerned. i’m sharing this because it’s kinda funny to me that i thought this was the move. i was also extremely burnt out then. i’m fine. i wake up at like 80-100 now.

Newly Diagonosed Newly diagnosed baby

Hi all, I just joined this group and was looking for a little advice. I'm a mom of a 2.5 year old daughter that's just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We're currently in the hospital and will probably be released later today. I woke up with her 3am check and can't sleep so I figured I'd do some research. We have no family or friends with type 1 so everything is new to us. We've had a crash course the past few days at the hospital and we're lucky that she's going to have a great care team moving forward. I just wanted to hear from anyone that has the time, any important details or advice. Things that are good to know, ways to help her cope, things to look out for, anything you wish you knew earlier. Procedural to emotional. I want to have a much information as I can to best understand and support her. Thank you so much in advance!

Question what is happening

last night i forgot to take lantus (not a usual occurrence, i was really tired and had a crappy day) and now i keep going low. i don't know what's happening because i know i should be going high instead of low but i eat and then come down 20 minutes later and it's really weird. even if i don't take insulin to eat i go up and come straight down. i'm not having any high sugar foods either so it's not like a spike that crashes down in other scenarios it's just weird. also this morning i woke up a little lower than usual and didn't rise when i got out of bed and walked around.

Glucose Monitors Libre 3+ Issues, anyone else?

Many things I do not like about Libre 3+, but as of late I am particularly struggling with it recalibrating and changing what it claimed my blood sugar to be in the past. For instance, it said I was 240 and headed double arrow up, so I corrected, then I check (about 20 minutes later) and it says I actually only hit 180 before beginning to descend (before I even corrected). T1d is difficult enough without feeling like my sensor is trying to gaslight me. Anyone else struggling with this issue? Is there a fix? Maybe a better sensor? Or is this just another frustration to accept? I’ve looked into the eversense but my insurance won’t cover it.

Seeking Support Diabetes/ADHD

I've been a T1 diabetic since the summer or 1985. I was not diagnosed as ADHD until 20 years after that and to say it's been a struggle to deal with trying to control my blood sugar while having untreated ADHD and then trying to control it while being treated for it had been a bitch.

I'm dealing with anxiety and depression as well as the usual complication suspects; I have had peripheral neuropathy since the 90's, lost a small toe on my "good" leg in 2000 and then lost my left leg (LBKA) 3 years ago. I also have retinopathy and get eye shots with the old people every couple of months. Because of chronic highs my mood fluctuates pretty badly.

My wife left me me in February, I was evicted because I couldn't keep my house (as an amputee it's tough), and my car got totalled in February. I moved from Lexington KY to the small town in Southern Illinois where my biological Dad brother and sister live in. I'm in a town of 500 people, but only paying $500 a month rent all-utilities included, but miss my kids. It was supposed to be a temporary move but now with the eviction on my record I can't f ind a place and am MISERABLE.

My sister quit talking to me after I got mad because she backed out on letting me use her car for my eye shot Doctor. She is a T2, keeps saying she's a T1 when she's not, is judgemental and apparently the only thing they do in this small town is gossip. So I keep to myself. No fake friends or family. My brother takes me to Walmart once a week and we are cool.

The ONLY thing keeping me alive is my great dane/pitbull Luna and my kids. She is my emotional support animal and is with me almost 24/7. I'm on disability, so I have my rent and enough to eat, but my teen boys need their Dad and I can't do shit about it, am stuck here missing all their band performances and it crushes me.

Luna has saved me a few times with lows. I have a Dexcom but honestly hearing it beep when it's high depresses me and I have literally turned it off before. I'm just tired.

Thankfully my Illinois insurance has kicked in now... my KY therapist wouldn't see me anymore on video visit because insurance says you have to be physcally in the state your therapist is in. Believe me I tried and their software knows if T you're not. But I am going to find a therapist tomorrow. I tried to get on ketamine but I didnt qualify. Guess I am not depressed enough lol.

Sorry to be a Debbie downer. Im alone, feel hopeless, don't feel attractive with my missing leg and my diseases, and just trying not to give up. I wouldn't do that to my kids or my dog but this is HARD.

Thanks for letting me vent I feel very alone right now.

Glucose Monitors Sensor Failures

Has anyone else noticed recently that Dexcom G7 sensors are failing with increasing regularity? My son has been using Dexcoms for almost 10 years, and he currently uses Omnipods. Today we had 2 failures. TWO! I will say, they are always fantastic about sending replacements, but I’d rather just have the stupid product work. I had to drive to school to change it for him (we don’t keep extra sensors in his kit because insurance only covers a 30 day supply at a time), and then as I was pulling back into the driveway, he called to tell me the replacement failed. Certainly we can survive with finger sticks, but it sure would be super duper if the technology worked consistently. I don’t think we’ve had more than 2 sensors make it the full 10 days in the last 3 months.

Ugh.
