Finished Watching Season 4 Spoiler

Spoilers ahead!

So I finished watching Season 4 this morning and the resolution to this huge mystery, with paranormal overtones and references to the haunting Dyatlov Pass Incident was... a gang of disgruntled cleaning ladies forced guys to strip off and stand in the cold? Come on.

First of all, a bunch of full grown men would have torn those women to shreds. They knew that it was a life and death situation, and at least a couple would have wrestled the guns from some and then shot them, and/or beaten the shit out of them. True they would have likely shot one or two of the scientists, but they wouldn't have gotten them all. The writing in this show depicted all the men in this town as being a bunch of frightened rabbits. I know this idea that small women can overpower full sized men is a common trope right now, but come on.

Also, in terms of the disposition of the bodies- what happened to the vet who said that people who died in the cold basically looked like they had fallen asleep? After they had been herded by the disgruntled cleaning ladies out into the cold, naked, they would have just gotten cold and sleepy, gradually dying. The dramatically posed remains had proven that the dead men hadn't died of hypothermia in one episode, and then that point was completely forgotten at the end. Did the writer have memory problems?

This was a really cool concept for a season that was really, miserably underutilized. With all the cool paranormal stuff in it, I fully expected there to be some far deeper realization of the cause of death. Maybe something like a crazy reaction to the microorganisms they had found, unleashing an evil force that reanimated the dead. But no. All the paranormal stuff was probably mental illness and subconscious realization that led up to a group of angry women terrifying 8 full grown men into submission. Sorry- not buying it.

キュア (Kyua)Cure (1997) A Japanese Film Felt Similar to True Detective Season 1

Post image
130 Upvotes

I finally got around to checking out the movie キュア (Kyua) or in English Cure. Obviously since is from Japan and not set in America some elements that made me compare it to TD Season 1.
There’s mystery in the cases they’re investigating, some hints of a cult, and we explore some very derelict and unsettling locations. There’s bit of “buddy cop” aspect as well. I know
True Detective (at least what we know of) wasn’t inspired off this film but but I just wanted to point out how it felt like True Detective in a way but set in 🇯🇵 and is a movie not a tv/mini-series. Would love to see more foreign films or tv shows that have more* True Detectiv*e feel and am an American that doesn’t mind reading subtitles as dubbing for me feel too distracting.

season 2 is really good

i dropped the show after s1 because it felt like i was moving on too fast. i watched like 3 other detective tv shows and finally got onto s2 this week.

i wouldn't compare it to s1 or claim that it should be just as good. i appreciate things for what they're made to be, not what they were expected to be, hence many may disagree and call s1 the only masterpiece in cinema, but in my perspective that's not true.

s2 is also well made. i wasn't aware rachel would play in it, so that was an amazing surprise, she did really great and as a girl it was nice to finally see a woman admit her disadvantage in her specific field of work. people just create reckless female detectives and make them look unbeatable, but bezzerides owned her shit. i also loved frank's relationship with his wife. jordan is very mature, patient and smart, unlike typical hysterical wives on TV.

i think paul woodrugh is a complex character and probably my favourite. he tried his best to do what's right for himself in his environment, he had no space for expression, which shows that freedom of expression is a privilege. the season itself is extremely miserable and depressing, especially the paternity test and the fact that chad never truly showed any valuable affection towards his dad. i felt so bad for velcoro, he loved him so dearly and chad was just...there. this season was like proof of what marty said to rust in the last scene:

rust: "we didn't get them all."

marty: "and we ain't gonna get 'em all, that ain't what kind of world it is. but we got ours."

it simply proves how fucked up our world will be for eternity.

Is there anything else like true detective season 1 and is 2 3 and 4 worth the watch

a Nic Cage season of TD with Pizzolato writing would, at the very least, be something I could not miss

it’s a tragedy that this dream will only be half fulfilled and likely be immediately forgotten after it airs just like s4. Cage deserves projects that will elevate his madness to its deserved heights and in a slightly different world this could have been perfect

Has anyone seen the movie Nefarious? Please watch.

Jordan Belfi would be an amazing true detective candidate. Dont let nic cage ruin the next season please!

I adored season 1 and its story. I’ve noticed the IMDb scores aren’t as high for season 2. Is it still worth a watch?

I’ll probably watch the first episode and if it’s as cringe as Night Country I’ll hate-watch the rest of the season, if I can. But skipping it completely is not off the table.

What do we think? :/

My personal headcanon on the possible supernatural dimension within S1

The show deliberately leaves the lore and theology of the Tuttle Cult open to interpretation.

I like imagining that True Detective’s first season literally takes place within the canon of the Cthulhu Mythos, and that someone involved in founding the cult had a brief, partial encounter with Hastur (a.k.a the Yellow King) and the dream-realm of Carcosa, with the writers keeping it tasteful by avoiding open supernatural events and having the detectives deal with the material, non-supernatural mess the cult’s worship left behind, and the cult itself being one of possibly many ramifications and of how the existence of the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods reverberates into human society.

My idea is that the cult’s founders encountered something, possibly through psychedelic drugs or another altered state, that they barely understood, and then they built their beliefs around it, and later generations inherited a mixture of that experience, distorted explanations, rituals, and abuse. They encountered one small part of a much larger reality and made it the basis of everything they believed. In Call of Cthulhu, people receive impressions through dreams without understanding their source. Hypnos explores altered states and access to things beyond ordinary perception. A person can experience enough to become obsessed while still having almost no understanding of what happened. Of course, Chambers and Bierce created Hastur and Carcosa, and Lovecraft only name-dropped them in another book, so the link to the Mythos mostly comes through later writers like Derleth, but the point stands that Hastur exists as a lovecraftian entity within the mythos, which is what my theory is based on.

There's also a lot of philosophical and thematic ressonance between the show and cosmic horror, which is something a lot of people point out. Rust’s pessimism and some of the things LeDoux and Childress say fit comfortably into that existencial horror that the works of Lovecraft and other cosmic horror writers lean upon. The existence of the Old Ones and Outer Gods are powerful because it summons within the reader this melancholic thalassophobic feeling of powerlessness and nihilism in the face of uncaring entities within a dark amoral reality, not unlike the vibe I get when I watch the show. The antagonists in the show commit evils so intense and so hard to comprehend that their methods and values come across as almost alien, which echoes the way that the existence of the Old Ones and Outer Gods often are so unknowingly complex and evil that it breaks the human minds of those who glimpse it.

Finally, and this is kind of a minor point, but usually when a story is based on another medium, its world usually leaves that medium out of the world that story takes place. The MCU has no Marvel Comics company, no Stan Lee, no comic books about its heroes, etc. The characters in The Walking Dead never say the word “zombie” because zombie movies do not exist in their world, etc. Rust and Marty are capable, well-read investigators, and they never come across a copy of The King in Yellow or any Lovecraft story. If those books existed in their world, the detectives would at least have found a mention of them. Instead the show treats these ideas as completely unknown. Rust becomes obsessed with understanding them, and the detectives go to absurd lengths to piece them together from scratch. That only makes sense if the books do not exist in the show’s reality. I personally like to fill in that gap with the possibility that the events are happening in the same reality as those stories.

This is just my own headcanon, based on my personal taste in horror and what makes the story even more interesting to me, as a fan. I’m sharing it for the fun of discussing that possibility but obviously I'm making no claim about the writers’ actual intentions or the objective truth of the show.

Season 3 has one of the most impactful endings i've ever watched

That final sequence is devastating in a way that's sweet and tender and hopeful, and it tells you that it all works out in the end. Then it cuts to the memory flashback and it makes you think "oh god they're gonna zag to something sad." But that last scene in the bar just doubles down on the happy ending. Real rollercoaster.

Green-eared spaghetti monster question

I have a cold so I sat down alone to watch True Detective Season 1 for the first time.

I loved the show. The one thing that I got confused by was the link to a house being recently painted green and a green eared spaghetti monster.

All I could think was that maybe a painter carries a mop for some reason, maybe to clean walls of dust before painting. Maybe he puts a mop on his head and had green paint on his hands and put his palms up by his ears to scare the girl. It was the only part of the show where I just felt like the link was that tenuous. Was there a stronger link that I missed? Just not sure why anyone would investigate who painted a house decades ago.
