What is your cleaning routine?

So, how does everyone approach regular cleaning and maintenance?

How often does your entire horn get a bath? What's your routine for cleaning and lubing your slide?

Got any favorite cleaners or lubes?

What are your go to tools?

Mouthpiece cleaning?

What do you use on your rotors?

Is there anything you think most people miss in taking care of their horn? Why is this important?

I'm sure younger members here would love the insight.

What is your most unhinged position for a note?

Mine is trigger 3rd for Bb on top of the bass clef staff. It’s pretty common for the octave below, but I really like it for the octave up.

Music Ed. Instrumental

My second question, I plan to take up music education with a concentration in instrumental performance. My
Primary instrument is going to be trombone, will I need to invest in an f trigger trombone (or even just a better one than what I have) ? I currently have a straight medium bore trombone. Specifically the BAC Elliot Mason artist trombone.

Trombone Improv.

I have recently really wanted to get good at leading in trombone and I was wondering how you all have trained to be able to improvise. And not just simply that but improvise with intention. How do you get your brain to think so quickly on passages?

Rest and Practice

What is your philosophy on rest or taking days off from practicing? Does your approach to rest change if you are targeting developing your high register during consecutive practice sessions/days? In exercise people always talk about routines that are often something like 2 on 1 off or 3 on 1 off. However, throughout my undergrad, it was always go go go play play play if you aren't practicing multiple hours every day you're wrong. Now I'm wondering how I should be incorporating rest to promote more development in my playing, muscles, upper register etc...

Uhm guys, do we think the SILVER plating is wearing off and exposing the bare brass...? If so, I should replace this mouthpiece right?

Breathing and embouchure

I have a question as a trombone beginner: how to breathe while not breaking my embouchure set up? My teacher told me to breathe through corners and it feels like I’m sipping air and adding tension to my face since I’m holding my embouchure all the time. But if I open my mouth and take a deep breath it’ll break my set up and I have to find the embouchure for that note again in milliseconds, which causes shakiness in my sound. Just wanted to hear about people’s experiences in this. Much appreciated!

How to play the second "lick" on Ghost Town by The Specials

Hello all, beginner here! im trying to figure out ghost town by the specials. In the second lick or fill that comes at 0:35 in the song I make out that the trombone is playing G#, C, D# and G#. (I didnt find sheet music so i might be wrong) And to my understanding all those notes would be played in third position?

So my question is: is that even correct? If you have time to listen, is that how you would play it? The high G# seems really hard but maybe its just because i suck right now.

When I watch the live performance their player seems to be playing something else, but he also has a different type of trombone so maybe thats why?

Is a 7c a good lead trombone mouthpiece?

Is the 7c a good reliable trombone mouthpiece for the high register and even the lower register? And is it good for lead playing in a big band?

Practicing questions

Hello, I’m a freshmen trombone player and I want to know how long I should play in a practice session since I just played for over 2 hours continuously. Is that a bad thing? Is there anything I should know when I practice in the future?

Trombone Case for a Bach 42A

Hello all, I was wondering what would be a good trombone for a Bach with a Hagmann valve, I noticed that the Bach case doesn't fit the Hagmann very well and puts pressure on the valve lever. Also the Bach cases are just really heavy and I don't like that the case is 3x the weight of the instrument.

(I also have issues with the compartment)

Any recommendations?

Is this trombone really the same?

I originally wanted a conn 88h from this seller but it got sold to someone else first. He then said this:

How would you feel about a stencil? It would be a lot cheaper. Just depends on if you care about brand recognition or not

The horn in question is an Accord B88 from 1999. Exact same thing as the Blessing B88 which is a clone of the 88H but with a yellow brass bell. Still made in Elkhart

Would there be a difference in sound/playing? Or just cosmetics.

Jazz Improvisation Critique

TLDR: I'm looking for advice/constructive criticism on my improvisation. Any advice is welcome. (Also the reason I'm posting here is because I realized I can't video post on r/jazz and figured there would be more trombone players with jazz experience than r/euphonium).

Song: There Will Never Be Another You

Hi all,

So short background, I'm a euphonium player (adult amateur, I didn't go to college for music) and I've been trying to get into learning how to improvise. I started taking private lessons with a jazz professor at the local university (usually once a month) and I've also been playing semi-regularly at jam sessions when my work schedule allows.

I'm not able to take lessons for the next few months since I'm saving up for the holidays, so I figured I'd take a solo I felt I sounded good on and see what advice people have for me. It's kind of hard for me to really evaluate my playing in terms of improvisation so I figured I'd crowd source this.

Thanks for any advice

Need to find a new case for a Olds Recording trombone

Post image
7 Upvotes

My father left me his old tenor trombone. It's an Olds Recording, serial #44929, probably from somewhere around 1948-1950 or so, because I'm guessing he got it in high school. I know it's not a particularly noteworthy horn, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me. The horn is in great shape because he maintained it carefully (and we used to play it when we'd gig together) but the case is starting to fall apart. From what I can tell from searching the web, these horns don't fit correctly in a standard-size case, and so they need a custom case, but I can't find any definitive information about where to find such a case.

Any Olds players here who have solved this problem already? Or have an old but well-preserved case they'd consider parting with? Any pointers appreciated.

Restoring an old trombone

Hey! I got an old trombone for free, and i was wondering if you guys have any tips on what I need to check before I use it. I know nothing about trombones, but since I got it for free I thought I would try. I have valve oil, and according to a trumpetist, it works and he got sound out of it. Is there anything I need to be aware of that could be broken? It has quite a bit of patina, but it sounded alright. My current plan was just to lubricate the slide since it is a tad slow.

Edit: anyone know how to lubricate the slide. What can I use?

I've been sitting on a Trigger trombone for quite a few years now always thinking I'm going to get back into playing, just for something else to happen and it sits....

I'd love the thought of it being used by somebody and am just not sure where to go to sell it! Any suggestions?

Response/articulation in the middle register

Hello hive mind. I'm brainstorming about a consistent issue I've been having in the partial from f in the staff to C, especially at loud dynamics, and especially if it's articulated. I have stuffy/thuddy articulation, and it's difficult to start exactly when I want to, especially after playing the upper register. For context, I've been playing for 16 years, I play for a living and have a degree in this so I'm familiar with the usual recommendations. It's wild how different playing in this register feels compared to Bb and above, I'm much more comfortable there. Then my low register isn't amazing, but it's solid. I'd say the majority of my playtime is in the meat and potato register of the instrument, so it's not lack of familiarity or anything.

I'm considering mouthpiece switch, I currently play on a shires and greg black 5g, love my sound, and generally like playing on my equipment except this issue is pretty bad.
