Which tomatoes should we choose for next year?

Hi everybody,

we're kind of new to the planting tomatoes in the garden business and still amateurs.

I've read somewhere, there is a reddit for every topic you could imagine (i guess they were right xD)

So my question would be, which are your absolute favorites you plant every year bc you love them so much? (I live in Austria)

Kind regards :)

Beefsteak. What happened here? Fasciation?

Noticed this beefsteak had a very thick looking stalk with lots of flowers crammed together. Some of the flowers unfurled, the rest turned into... This. 😂

It's still early days for this one, I'm going to keep it on the plant for science. I have 3 other Beefsteaks so no worries on a smaller yield by keeping this monster.

Indoor Tomato Plants

Post image
12 Upvotes

The Scotia Tomato Plants I’m growing indoors are getting bigger. There are already several fruit forming and by November some of them will be ripe 🙂. For anyone interested in the lights pictured, I’m using a Barrina grow light rack that came with 6 - 30Watt - 3 foot long high efficiency full spectrum grow lights (the entire system is 180 watts). When I’m growing the tomatoes I’m only using the bottom set of lights so that is 2 - 30 watt lights (60 watts) for 2 plants The rack isn’t currently available on Amazon but the lights are. You would just need to find a rack or something else to attach them to. Here is the link to the lights: https://link.amazon/B068RjlAW

What variety to choose?

Over the last couple of years I have bought tomato seeds here and there. This has brought me in that situation, that now I have so many different varieties. I have a hard time choosing what i should plant next year. So I am looking for all the advice I can get. So give me all your critics, experiences, upsides and downsides, if you have any, with the varieties I have on hand.

I am in zone 7a or 8a.

I have taken some pics of the different varities and you should be able to zoom in on the pics to see the names.

Thank you for your attention on this matter!😁😉

My first time growing them and they’ve taken ages to get to full size and ripeness, which has been good in some ways because I‘m now eating tomatoes in October. They weren’t part of the summer salads of my dreams however. Anyone else had luck with this variety?

I picked the first and only fruit from my purple Cherokee plant and immediately dropped it after rinsing it, it bounced on the tile and now there’s a bunch of cracks in it 😭😭 it’s not fully ripe, will this last to be fully ripened or should I just figure out something to do with it now? I’m so sad, I’ve been looking forward to a BLT for weeks. First picture was taken before disaster

Question White spots in the inner skin?

Post image

This is pretty late season tomato (zone 5b), but I've been seeing this intermittently throughout the season, especially in my cherry tomatoes. Are these white spots just a fact of home grown tomatoes, disease related, or a nutrient issue?

Question Help picking varieties

Black Krim
Black Russian
Old German
Beefsteak
Cherokee Purple
Cherokee Green
Kellogg’s Breakfast
Mortgage Lifter
Heirloom Marriage Genuine
Green Zebra
Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye
Buffalosun
Indigo Rose

Or do I do them all 😂 I have a 15x50 ground garden so I could make it work. But I’d like to do two of each.. that makes it a little tight with everything else that I plant..

I did the first four this year: black krim and Russian did great, beefsteak was eh, and old German did terrible lol

Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks!

Zone 8B wa state.

ETA: what are your favorites?

Show and Tell Tomato sprouting?!

This tomato has been on my counter for probably three weeks and is still firm to the touch. Started getting weirdly lumpy early this week and this morning there was a sprout coming straight out of the skin lol I would have figured the tomato would need to be in a state of rot for the seeds to sprout. Anybody ever seen this happen on their kitchen counter??

Tomato powder so far

Took all day (with breaks-i need a bigger grinder) but I've ground all my dehydrated tomatoes. I have dehydrated all my extra tomatoes which is a lot and for the next few days I'll have more coming off the vine for the season so maybe a container or two more is in the works. I do this because it's easy and versatile and I needed more ways to keep tomatoes good besides the freezer and hardly have the time to can.

Show and Tell Holy tomatoes!

Picked the remaining mature tomatoes before the first frost, and holy cow is it a ton!!! After last year’s sad harvest I didn’t know what to expect this year but it was abundance, abundance, abundance! I need to find more sauce recipes and other recipes for them 🤣. My favourites are curry, shakshuka, pasta sauce, and pizza sauce. What are your favourite recipes to use for your tomatoes?

Also, I have yet to try fried green tomatoes or green tomato chutney because I’m apprehensive about the flavour, for those of you who have tried either, what does it taste like? How do they compare to ripe tomatoes, or other flavour profiles?

Question Looking for Tips on How to Grow Tomatoes In This Contraption

Thumbnail

I just put this indoor greenhouse together, and plan to try to grow tomatoes in it, starting tomorrow. I got some pots, and plan to try to grow three Tiny Tim micro-dwarf plants on each of the top two shelves (I figure the bottom two shelves I can reserve for seedlings). The instructions were pretty useless, so if anyone has used something like this successfully to grow tomatoes, I have a bunch of questions:

  1. What are the different colored lights for? There is pink, blue and white.

  2. How bright should the lights be when planting seeds? Should that change as they grow?

  3. The lights come with a timer. How many hours of light should I set it for initially, and later?

  4. Do I need to put a fan in there? On each shelf?

  5. Should I monitor the temperature, and if so, what should I be looking for?

Any other tips or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated!

Mail order plants.

I got a pair of purple Cherokee and a pair of yellow cherry tomatoes from Bonnie Plants. One of the yellow cherry tomato plants arrived in a very poor state. From the picture you can see that its main stem has been snapped. I'm thinking of maybe tying the other stem to the main stem with some gardening Velcro. Any other tips on how I can get this to survive?
