So, I have seen:
Railgun S1+S2
Index S1, currently on s2 ep 9-10
And I recently read the first volume of the Index light novel.
Railgun is where I started

Mikoto's lore???
So, I am a huge Mikoto simp. But the way they describe her backstory (which I haven't actually seen much of yet) seems a little strange to me.
Various characters including Mikoto herself have said "You have no idea how hard she had to work and struggle to become as powerful as she is!"
But, from what I've seen, Mikoto is a relatively healthy girl with a strong self esteem, strong friendships, strong work ethic, wealthy kind parents who love her, etc etc.
Further thoughts appeared in my head once I started the light novel. I'm not sure if this was even said in the Index anime *at all*, but right out of the gate it says espers are made by basically giving kids a bunch of crack and drugs and experiments 😭 You're considered talented and special if your body responds well to it (if you still end up level 0 after all that, you just kinda suck).
Although I have no doubt that the students have to work hard to improve their abilities, it tells us loud and clear that they are not born with any powers, and they are largely given to them by somebody else
So what I'm saying is, how hard did she really have to struggle? And this whole idea of everyone cramming drugs down students' throats and worse (Mikoto describes getting electrodes stabbed into your ears??) is... a big deal! One that most people in the city oddly don't consider to be a big deal nor does it really reflect in the characters.
we've seen plenty of how academy city is kind of a terrible place and also excellent at covering things up like a dystopian society, but the curriculum isn't a secret whatsoever, and everyone's ok with it.
so do we kinda get more elaboration on this or mikoto's past

general things bugging me a little rn
I kind of have to imagine Railgun and Mikoto fans have a snobby reputation in the fanbase 😭 and so, this might end up sounding like something a billion others have said but.
this recent arc with kuroko vs the enemy teleporter who was trying to recreate the tree diagram bothered me. it was good but I'm really tired of Mikoto hiding stuff even though she has seemingly learned the lesson not to do that multiple times by now. and it flat out feels like in Index she hardly cares about her friends compared to Touma. She's instantly swooned when Touma shows up to help, but KUROKO GOING OFF AND ALMOST DYING ON HER OWN TRYING TO HELP HER??? She gets a "Thanks bro." and a fake "Everything's okay!" smile, STILL not being open or vulnerable with her. Her reactions to Touma makes her seem like a super lonely person who has never had a loving friend in her life, but she clearly does! All her friends would die for her, if they were given the opportunity to by actually knowing what is happening! The whole "Omg, someone is coming to save me!" thing, when it is clear other people are willing to sacrifice themselves for her, is just blah
Btw, I'm not a Kuroko x Mikoto shipper so it is not that that bothers me. Mikoto's crush on Touma has kind of become weirder with time, like with her purposefully giving him something she drank out of, or being ok with the thought of him tackling her onto the ground and kissing her. It seemed like a cute innocent crush tsundere trope, but it is skirting into territory that feels like stuff no normal girl would do. I've seen and loved stories where a character is practically throwing themselves at their unrequited love interests and pushing past their comfort zones for it, but those characters are always incredibly lonely, sad people, but Mikoto isn't that, so it just feels off.
I guess I am just a little disappointed I suppose. It's not like I am throwing this character in the trash or anything, but in railgun s1 and s2 I really felt like she was one of the most badass and strong female characters I've seen. here she feels kinda. dumbed down, and i kinda have to put away my copium at some point and accept this is just how the character is written.
(another disclaimer: I absolutely am the kind of degenerate anime fan that waifu shows appeal to, and I'm not going to act like all my favorite characters are entirely realistic and not written to appeal to people like me)
