Lystrosaurus was a small pig-like herbivore. It survives and literally dominates the early Triassic. At one point it makes up 95% of all land vertebrates on Earth.
Why? What made Lystrosaurus so special? Small body means less food needed? Burrowing behavior that protected from temperature swings? Or just dumb luck?
And here's what really gets me. The Gorgonopsids were more mammal-like than most animals alive today. They had differentiated teeth, likely warm blood, possibly fur. By any measure they should have been the survivors.
But they weren't.
Does anyone have a good explanation for why the "winners" of mass extinctions so rarely seem to be the most advanced or dominant animals of their era?

Right, so I’ve thought of a scenario, what if a pack of 10-20 hyenas attacked a male bison? I’m sure the bison would win almost every time. Bison can match up in stamina with zebras and sprint the same. They’re also the only bovines that actively use powerful kicks, as strong as a horse’s, to kill or injure wolves and bears. Yes, wolves and bears have had broken bones caused by bison kicks . Other bovines like yaks and African buffalo also kick, but the hyena is no pushover either. They have one of the strongest bite forces in the world and hunt prey as big as buffalo. To some extent, they even target injured or young rhinos or, if you don’t believe me, adult male hippos that have been injured by another male and exiled from the herd, close to death. However, my favor is the bison. Bison have thicker skin than Cape buffalo and fur for protection. What do you think?

the bee has venom so it could deal poison damage to the whale as an advantage

Everyone knows the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. But 252 million years ago, something far worse happened — and almost nobody discusses it.
The Great Dying. In geological terms, it was instantaneous. Siberian volcanoes erupted for thousands of years straight, pumping enough CO2 to raise global temperatures by 10°C. The oceans acidified. Oxygen levels collapsed. 96% of all marine species. 70% of all land vertebrates. Gone.
Gorgonopsids had been the kings of the world for 50 million years before this happened. Saber-toothed, fast, warm-blooded — they were closer to you and me than to any reptile. Every mammal alive today traces back to the same lineage. They were us, 252 million years ago.
And they didn’t survive a single day of the extinction.
No gradual decline. No adaptation. The fossil record just... stops.
What gets me is that we treat the Cretaceous extinction as the great tragedy of prehistoric life. But the Permian was incomparably worse — it nearly ended complex life on Earth entirely. The dinosaurs only existed because the Great Dying cleared the board first.
Gorgonopsids deserved better than being a footnote.
If this is new to you, my profile has more on the animals that ruled before the dinosaurs.

Pro tip: Even if you only got them to consume food, remember that the game has weapon stats for all dental configurations.
