Announcement | Mod Post r/Therian Community Welcome, Information, and Updates

Hi everyone! I’m BanishedOcean, one of the moderators here, and currently the moderator you’ll see around here the most.
A quick intro before we get into the updates: some of my theriotypes are a deep-sea chimaera, gulper eel, hairy anglerfish, and I’m also a shark cladotherian. I enjoy seeing the incredible variety of experiences and perspectives people bring to this community, and I’m always happy to help keep the subreddit welcoming and organized.

Whether you’re brand new or have been here for years, I’m glad to have you here and welcome to [r/therian](r/therian)!

A few quick reminders

Before posting, please take a moment to review the subreddit rules. They’re there to help keep the community safe, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the most commonly overlooked rules are:
-No community links or advertising.
-No self-promotion.
-No personal location information.
-Individual “looking for…”, gear, craft, or similar posts belong in the appropriate megathreads rather than as standalone posts.

If you’re unsure whether your post belongs somewhere else, checking the rules or messaging the mod team first is always appreciated.

Also a gentle reminder that posts and comments from those with low subreddit karma are manually approved before going live. Please be patient with us it can take a couple days if it’s been more than a week please reach out to mods.

Subreddit updates

A few things have changed recently:
-The Introductions Megathread is moving from weekly to monthly.
-The Crafts Megathread is also moving from weekly to monthly.
These changes should make those threads easier to use and give conversations a bit more time to grow before they’re replaced and prevent the posts from getting archived.

New posting guideline

You’ll also notice a new rule regarding posts like:

“Are there any ___ therians?”
“Am I the only ___?”
“Why do I never see ___ therians?”

These questions have been asked many, many times over the years, and we now receive numerous nearly identical submissions every week. Most don’t lead to much discussion beyond people commenting “yes” or listing their theriotypes.
Instead, please use Reddit’s search function first. Chances are you’ll find previous discussions about aquatic therians, bird therians, paleo therians, insects, reptiles, invertebrates, obscure species, and many other groups.

This doesn’t mean species discussions aren’t welcome because they absolutely are. We’d love to see conversations about experiences, instincts, shifts, artwork, behaviors, research, symbolism, or anything else that encourages meaningful discussion. The goal is simply to move away from repetitive “Does anyone else exist?” posts and encourage more engaging conversations.

Thanks for being here!!!!

This community continues to grow because of the people who participate in it. Thank you to everyone who reports rule-breaking content, helps answer questions, shares thoughtful discussions, and makes new members feel welcome.
If you have questions, suggestions, or notice something that needs moderator attention, don’t hesitate to reach out through Modmail.
Happy posting! 🐾

Megathread Introduction Megathread

Share all of your introductions here in the comments of this recurring megathread.

Remember to follow these before you post as these will be moderated!

* If you are under the age of 18 do not list your full age, “under 18” is just fine!
* Don’t give out personal information! We don’t need to know where you live and strangers should not be privy to things that would identify you in real life!
* Please remember to add plenty of detail.

We have a template to follow below that is going to include what to talk about, but there’s no need to stick to one-word answers. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as your theriotype, as well.

Please remember to follow the rest of the rules when posting. This includes self promotion of your other socials which is not allowed.

This is the standard we expect from everyone here!

**Name/Nicknames:**

**Age: Under 18/Whatever if you’re an adult**

**Theriotype/Kintype:**

**Interests:**

**Hobbies:**

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like:**

***Hypothetical introduction:***

**Name/Nicknames**: Hi, my name is Robert but I also go by Bob.

**Age**: I’m currently 32, will be 33 in December.

**Theriotype/Kintype**: I have several kintypes, I'm a wolf, a rabbit and a dragon. I have a past life as a rabbit but the other two are psychological identities.

**Interests**: My main interests for now are animated shows, animation history in general and the history of therianthropy.

**Hobbies**: I’m a massive gamer, but I’m also trying to get back into reading as that’s been difficult for me! I enjoy talking to people.

**What do you enjoy talking about/what would an average conversation with you look like**: Typically I most enjoy talking about the creative side of things, art, crafts, gear, but I also like to talk about my experiences as a dragon and artist.

Media comments are enabled but please keep it high effort! We do not allow draw-overs.

*NOTE: Introduction posts are not allowed on this subreddit outside of these megathreads. This rule is in place to reduce feed clutter, allowing for more core therianthropy-related posts to be seen. This is a support subreddit for a marginalised community, so we feel as though this is a necessary method of clutter reduction to have in place so that those who need help have a better chance of receiving it.*

Question Age Poll

Hi all, I am doing a bit of research for my autobiography.

Previous polls posted by others have shown that spiritual therians such as myself make up only about 20-25% of the responding online community.

It was also obvious as soon as I came here that most of the community is at least half my age.

I am trying to determine just how much of a minority I am here...help me out? TIA 😽

I didn't particularly like many of the ones I found, so I decided to make one! I'll probably add onto it when I find more songs, but this is a decent start so I wanted to share! If you've got any recommendations feel free to let me know and I might add them! I'll probably make more eventually too! I hope you have a great day/night everyone! 🐾

Question I simply need to know a term for my experience

I’m sure this is more otherlink than otherkin. But I feel as if I am every creature that has ever existed. I’m already pansexual, and pangender, but now I suppose I am every being that has ever existed! Is there a term for this I can use?

General / Other Is it possible to be both therian and otherkin ?

My theriotype(s) is (are) still very blurry, but I'm pretty sure I'm some form of cat, but at the same time, mostly at night, I feel like a big creature/cryptid/thing that's definitely more fucked-up than a cat.

So I was wondering if that could be a weird kintype, which led me to more confusion because that would make me therian and otherkin at the same time.

So if any of you have similar experiences, ways to figure out / test a therio/kintype, or just ideas on what is possible and what is not, that would be appreciated

Vent I miss flying sm

I miss very specific things abt flying. Idk if it's weird to say "miss"... but I miss it, I feel like it's something I know and understand the sensation of and all that's left is for me to experience it, it's the only thing missing. I think of it so much. My wings, how it looks, how it feels, how it moves, their warmth and the way the sun looks when it shines through them. It's like an obsession, a lifelong obsession. Sometimes it hurts how much I want it to be real, to really have them and really be able to use them.

(I'm a bat by the way)

I would be very happy if other winged creatures could talk about themselves and their wings and flying, what you love about it, what you miss about it, how it feels on your body.

Question Winter Tips? :< SAD mentioned. Spoiler to be safe. Spoiler

Hey yall! I have an ask... I suffer from seasonal affective. If you know you know. Winter is coming in the northern hemisphere (gulp). How are we acclimating ourselves to the cold up here? Sensory issues make bitter cold temps hurt my skin, but the husband says I have to get outside more to combat the seasonal depression. He's not wrong, but I'm shaking in my paws a bit at the thought of being cold, on purpose, to go sledding and jump in snow piles. I feel like the silliest fox alive for even having this issue :/ Anyone had a similar experience? How did you combat those sensory struggles? ^_^

General / Other Omnitherian AMA

For those who don't know, an omnitherian is one who identifies as all earthly animals simultaneously.

It is such a strange yet interesting experience! I can look at literally any earthly animal (including ones that are now extinct) and feel some level of identity towards it. I genuinely identify as every single animal.

I feel like omnitherianthropy is something not discussed very often or is well known, so I'd like to inform people (within my personal experiences) of this strange and beautiful identity!

Anyway, Ask Me Anything! I'll try answer any questions as honestly as possible : )

(Any fellow omnitherians, feel free to share your experiences in the comments or answer any questions that others may ask!)

General / Other Permanent archives vs. ephemeral spaces: Does our history get lost too easily?

Do you think the community lacks a permanent, un-censorable registry for our history, or do you prefer the ephemeral nature of private forums?

hello creatures, im wondering if anyone has recommendations for calming nature documentaries : ) a lot of the ones ive seen are very focused on killings and epic music, which is fine.. but id like ones that are bit more playful or focused on habitats. i want to see animals building dens, playing, hiding from the rain, whatever else. any kind of animal is okay but i would be excited to watch things about less beloved animals

Discussion Are there too many therian terms now?

I’ve been a member of the therian community (not Reddit, but sites like werelist, etc) for quite sometime now. I recently came across a few terms I didn’t know and that which seem unnecessary to me. So I’m wondering, do we have too many terms and definitions now? Are we really benefiting ourselves by having so many categories of therians?

General / Other Wearing a collar for the first time in about 8 years

TL;DR : Wore my collar for the first time in about 8 years for a "costume" at an event, it's now a theriotype comfort item of mine.

In my teens when experimenting as a furry, I'd gotten myself a dog collar to wear as well as a tag for it. Found it again recently for a craft show event I was going to with my mom, we were allowed to wear costumes so thought I'd give it a shot along with my (albeit shoddy) ears I'd made also in my teens.

It was the first time I've worn that collar in about 8 years, it took a little adjusting when I initially put it on again but eventually felt very comfortable in it to the point I was wearing it up until I was about to sleep.

I think the wording would be that it's a comfort item now, or at least species euphoric. I wear it daily, though mostly when my parents aren't around (they're very supportive, but I just think it might seem weird to them I suddenly start wearing it a lot even when not going out) I guess I'm just trying to get comfortable with myself wearing it before I start going out with it regularly.

I've only told a few people that my theriotype has changed to that of a german shepherd and timber wolf mixed breed, as well as sharing a drawing I made earlier this week on the adulttherian sub; so I'm still adjusting to accepting that much more accurate wording on top of comfort of my collar.

I'm considering making myself a new tag with my new chosen name for the collar, but mainly going to try gradually wearing the collar more often first before doing that. I'm pretty happy to have found another theriotype comfort accessory and wanted to share, thank you for reading this far ^-^

Experience Mouse to Mouse-Deer

Post image
61 Upvotes

Adult therian here, I thought I was a mouse for a longest time and simply got comfortable with the idea. Specifically the fancy mouse. I am not a spiritual therian or one with past lives or shifts or anything like that. My logic is that due to being left alone for long periods of time during my childhood developmental years I grew up with the behaviors of the pets around me rather than other humans.

Recently I discovered Mouse-deer, or Chevrotains, and decided to do some research on them. They share a lot of non-human traits I believe I exhibit.

One thing that always made me question myself when it came to mice being my theriotype is their need to be social and the fact that they often have babies. I always saw my personal lack of motherly traits as non-human. Along with my need to be alone as often as possible.

Mouse-deer are mainly solitary animals and will have small litters of one baby, sometimes two if twins. I always saw myself as a little mouse scurrying around the forest floor by myself, but a mouse-deer seems much more plausible now.

Maybe I am a polytherian, I'm still thinking about it. Especially since I have identified with specifically the domesticated mice species, but I am still on the family of "mouse-deer" I haven't narrowed down the genus nor species.
