Any recs on what to do in the rain?
Just landed here in Taipei a few hours ago and have about 5 days in Taipei…wasn’t expecting this Typhoon when booking this trip so now kind of wondering what to even do for the next 5 days.
Any recs? Here w my mom - we both enjoy food/drinks, art, history, and are super open to trying new things. Let me knowwww.
Side note: Would nightlife essentially be a no due to the rain? I’m keen on getting out to a few bars but don’t know what to expect w the rain lol

Caught a fishing boat slipping past this sea stack last weekend. (Oct 18, 2026) Anyone know what locals call this rock?

Champi and food
Any way to know what places are open? We're at the end of our trip and leaving tomorrow (hopefully). Would like to eat some good food before we go. Perhaps tomorrow? We leave for the airport at 9pm tomorrow.

Is the day trip to Jiufen + Shifen worth it?
I’ve heard it can be super touristy and crowded. I was thinking of doing the day trip next Thursday

Lost a single AirPod Prob3 around the New Taipei City modern art museum! If anyone is there/planning on going there, please keep an eye out 😭
I already told the museum staff to call me if they find it. Last seen yesterday Wednesday 10/21 at around 4 PM. I suspect I lost it around the second floor area where the lockers are. I went back to look for it today but no luck. As of last night, my Find My app was still pinging the AirPod as in that museum area.
Please let me know if by any chance one of you spots a left earbud! Thanks so much (AirPod pro 3, with a silicone tip)

Low FODMAP Options - Taipei
Hello,
I am traveling to Taipei with a friend who can't eat very much allium (garlic, onion) and gluten. We are trying to come up with a few options for her that should be safe.
I've been trying to find any information about ready to eat items at Family Mart / 7-11, but it's been hard to find information. Any ideas or ingredient lists that anybody might be able to provide would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks!

Water heater for rental place
Hi All
Anyone know how I can solve the lack of water heater in the rental room I am looking at?
Landlord refused to fork out money to install. Other than helping the landlord to install one out of my own pockets, what other ways I can solve this?
Thanks in advance!

Is it possible to find the Brighter Summer Day tree?
American filmmaker recently inspired by Edward Yang. I’m visiting Taipei for the first time in 3 weeks. I was just wondering if residents actually know where this tree is and if people take pictures there. I’m not seeing anything about it being a landmark.

Looking for thrift stores that have Roots
Love Roots and all my shirts I bought years ago no longer fit, but let’s be honest, the prices for simple shirts are ridiculous. So I thought maybe thrifting is the way. Any recommendations on where to find stores (Taipei or Taichung) that have Roots stuff or similar or are they hard to find second hand? Thanks in advance.

Hotel N vs Hotel Relax III
Hi there — Looking for some feedback / recommendations / opinions based on these two hotels.
We have both hotels booked in November and are having a hard time deciding which one we should choose. Curious if anyone has any experience with either.
Our goal was a budget friendly hotel near Taipei Main Station for our three nights stay in both are about $60 USD a night.
Any suggestion or insight would be appreciated! Thank you!
Champi and Arrival in TPE on Sunday
I’m planning to arrive in Taipei this coming Sunday, but I’m a little worried with all the news about the typhoon. Is there expected to be widespread damage/power outages/etc. that would make a trip to Taipei unadvisable? No word from my airline yet, but I know it’s early. Thanks!

NCHU Taiwan PhD
Hi! I’ve applied for the PhD program in Taiwan and Transcultural Studies at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU). Are there any current students or alumni who could share information about scholarships and funding for international PhD students? Is a monthly stipend provided, and does it cover tuition fees as well? Is funding guaranteed or competitive? I’d really appreciate any insights. Thank you!

Commuting to Taoyuan Airport T2
Hello I will be visiting Taiwan soon! I would like to ask what’s the best way to commute from Taipei Main Station to Taoyuan T2 when my flight is at 8:15 am. I’m nervous waiting for the Airport Express to open might be too late. Would the Kuo-Kuang 1819 bus be a better option? If so, is the traffic particularly terrible going to the airport?

How are friendships in Taipei/Taiwan like?
Hi all, I’m looking to make a move to Taipei/Taiwan in the near term. In search of some new life experiences and also maybe a slightly slower pace of life.
I’m curious about how friendships are like here. I’ve had meals with locals several times over the past year, where the conversations somehow went into dating/relationships, but I’m just as curious about friendships!
Is it going to be hard for a “foreigner”? Are friendships very surface level? Etc.
For context:
I’m ~40, Singaporean Chinese (acceptable Mandarin), recently came out of semi retirement to build some new ventures I’m pretty excited about. I’m in full hustle mode, and would ideally like to balance that out by living in a place that hopefully has a more relaxed pace of life, a strong sense of 人情味, with more nature, art, music in my life.
Friendship/community matters a lot in my current and next phase in life, I feel, so it’s a consideration for where I’d like to move to. I’m also looking for a partner in life to build a family with, though also ready to be a single parent if I have to.
Might do the gold card for a longer term stay in Taiwan.
