Ask r/Tahiti Tour Operators - Whales & Snorkeling

Looking for recommendations for reputable small-group whale swim operators in Moorea. Is it also worth doing a whale tour from Tahiti, or are the experiences fairly similar?

Also interested in other pelagic/snorkeling tours - humpbacks, pilot whales, dolphins, sharks, rays, or other offshore marine life. I’m a huge fan of deep-water wildlife encounters, so would love tour recommendations! Thank you!

Whales this weekend

Hi!
I’ve been noticing concern regarding the weather lately in French Polynesia. We have a private whale tour and photographer booked for Sunday in Moorea. It’s rather expensive and I know it’s a bit of a gamble already, but has anyone done or heard about how the whale swims have been going? Anything helps. Thank you!

Lost DJI action pro 5 - Fakarava 18 Oct, hoping for a miracle

Hey guys,

I’m pretty heartbroken at the moment. Just at Tahiti airport and have realised that I don’t have my action camera with me, and haven’t downloaded any of my diving videos from our 3 week Honeymoon in FP. It is a DJI action 5 pro in the waterproof diving case (pictured).

We last had it yesterday (18 October) in Fakarava.
Places it could be are O2 Coco snack, PK9 beach, Havaiki lodge and outside Topdive area.

I would be so grateful if anyone in these areas would be able to have a check with the owners.

I have highlighted on google maps where we were located.
PK9 beach: after the coconut tree leaning into the water that’s lost its head. When you enter PK9 beach and immediately turn left and walk down a couple hundred meters. If anyone is able, could you also check the bushes around the back here? We had a friendly dog hanging around us and maybe he got the camera somehow. Pin location here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/B5mFrVc1um3qs6oe9

O2 coco snack: we sat at the table on the leftmost side nearest the beach under the tree.

Outside Topdive: if it fell out of my bike as I cycled to my lodge.

Havaiki lodge: we were siting under the tree to the right of the pier, right in front of where you park your bikes.

Thank you so much to anyone that is able to check. Hoping for a miracle that someone can save my photos. 🙏

Wind situation

Is that from El Niño or is this how it always is at this time or just the weather right now ? Seems like the wind is intense. I thought the El Niño brought less wind and more rain. Just trying to see how enjoyable or not it’s going to be- we’re going in a couple of weeks

J'ai vu cette question sur r/vexillology et je me suis demandé avec quel drapeau les Polynésiens s'identifient le plus. Et que pensez-vous de ces drapeaux ?

Nature: ‘Incredible’: bleached corals thrive within days when touching healthy neighbour

Scientists have rapidly restored bleached coral in a laboratory by placing it in contact with a healthy fragment, giving hope for reversing widespread coral decline.

Rising sea temperatures are stressing corals, causing the animals to expel the symbiotic algae that live in their tissues and give them their colour — a process known as bleaching. Because the photosynthetic algae (Symbiodiniaceae) provide corals with most of their nutrients, without them, the marine organisms are likely to starve and die.

A team of researchers has now shown that it is possible to fully reverse this bleaching process, in just days. It reported the findings in Science Advances on 14 October1.

“This incredible new result — that fast and full recovery is possible in bleached coral — can inspire solutions that eventually may be scalable,” says Fiorenza Micheli, a marine ecologist at Stanford University’s Center for Ocean Solutions in California and a co-author on the study.

Ask r/Tahiti Mo’orea Whales - LDW?

Hi everyone! We’re considering a trip to Moorea over Labor Day week, with swimming/whale watching being one of the main reasons for the trip.

For anyone who has visited around that time in early September, how was your experience? Were there plenty of humpbacks around, and did you have good opportunities to see or swim with them?

I know wildlife and conditions can vary, but I’d especially love to hear firsthand experiences from people who went during Labor Day week or early September. Would you consider it a great time to go, or would you recommend waiting until later in September? Thank you!

Air Tahiti Multi-Pass Booking Not Working

Air Tahiti's multi-island pass booking isn't working right now and hasn't been for at least a week (banner at the top of the website says they're working on fixing it). Do Tuomuto flights fill up early and should I book as soon as I can even if I have to do it individually and likely pay more?

Anyone have any idea how long it hasn't been working? I'm not sure if it's been down for a week or years. Also not sure if it saves me enough money to be worth the wait anyways.

Hurricanes, cyclones ?

Just wondering how frequent extreme weather incidents like hurricanes and cyclones are in the South Pacific. Do they occur regularly ? And how severe are they when they happen ? I was in Moorea and the Cook Islands recently, both stunningly beautiful, but I couldn't help but notice that a hurricane would likely devastate the inhabited area severely.

Hertz car rental driver's licence issue PSA and workaround for Aussies

Hi everyone, as posted by someone else a little while ago, Hertz is very strict about the rule of showing an official document that proves you have had a licence for at least 3 years.

Australian licences don't show the issue date and mine was issued 9 years ago so I didn't have any pictures of my old licence.

After sweating for 30 minutes while trying to find something on my phone or online storage I finally got to the state government (NSW) app that allows you to request a driving history.

At a bargain of AUD $28 I was instantly emailed a pdf showing a document with the issue date and that was accepted!

So either avoid Hertz or come prepared as I was told that without the proof I would not have been able to pick up the car. This was on Mo'orea, but I have another booking in Papeete and that would have been the same.

Disaster avoided, so bring a picture of an old licence or the driving history if renting with Hertz.

By the way, it's still raining, yesterday supposedly 60+ mm in Mo'orea.

Late Dec / early Jan in Tahiti — what are they saying about El Niño season on the ground?

Hi! My wife and I planning a trip to Moorea/Tahiti around Dec 20 – Jan 2. I know it’s the wet season, and I’ve seen the regional cyclone outlook calling for elevated activity east of the Date Line this year... but that otherwise El Nino is dry.

Do people there know:

  1. How are folks there talking about this season differently than usual? What should we expect?
  2. For anyone who’s been through past strong El Niño years: how did late December actually play out? Mostly normal, or real disruption? We can tolerate some rainy days, but not sure what to expect

Thank you for your help!

The first tropical storm of this dreaded season has formed overnight east of Pukapuka, Northern Cook islands, with 15 days in advance to the official storm season date. It's projected to move southeast, to Southern Cooks and Australes archipelago, French Polynesia. Let's keep an eye on that. Faaitoito.

Inter Island flight booking and transfer time.

Hello everyone!

I’m currently planning a trip to French Polynesia in September 2027. I’ve already booked my international flights and accommodation based on my planned itinerary, but I still have two questions and would really appreciate some advice.

1. Inter-island flights: Does anyone know how far in advance Air Tahiti usually opens bookings for domestic flights? Is it important to book as soon as flights become available, or is availability generally good enough to wait a little?

2. Transfer from Moorea to Rangiroa: I’ve allocated one full day to travel from Moorea to Rangiroa. Do you think it’s realistic to take the ferry from Moorea to Tahiti and then catch a flight to Rangiroa on the same day? Or would you recommend returning to Tahiti the evening before and spending a night there to avoid any potential connection issues?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has done a similar trip or has experience with inter-island connections.
Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendations!

Ask r/Tahiti Is this song really Tahitian?

Thumbnail

I was told this was a Tahitian song, but from what I managed to understand (which isn't a lot) it's Maori Kuki Airani...

Google was absolutely no help at all, telling me in turn it's Fakaterere or Taku Manu Pekepeke, which-yeah. Absurd. I managed to transcribe the intro, but again was told it's more of a general phrase, so it did nothing to identify either the performers or the title.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
