Red dot or ghost ring?

I have an optic-ready 590a1. it seems that, sadly, i can't cowitness with red dot+ghost ring because of the way the receiver is cut and how low the front sight is. So it's gotta be one or the other. Ghost rings have been fun, red dots are awesome but i've only used them on handguns. i want my tact shotgun to be a worthy battle axe. i shoot a lot of slugs at the range with it at various distances. what do you guys think ?

How Far Do We Trust the Maverick 88?

Working on rebuilding my shotgun collection and started by replacing my 20 inch Maverick. My question is, is it durable enough to pit more money into (Light,Shell carrier, red dot) as a HD/SHTF gun? I will also be doing another Shockwave SBS build with light, dot, etc but I'm not sure if it would be better to spend money on the Maverick or Shockwave first. I did purchase GG&G sling mounts and a fiber bead for the Maverick.

MRO HD on A300?

Hello, I’m building/consolidating into a minimalist collection.

One of my guns I’m getting rid of has a MRO HD on it. I do love the optic, I also have a Romeo 4T Pro and a EoTech for comparison on me saying I love it. I know it gets hate.

I am looking for peoples experience using it on their shotguns?

Note: as I type this, I forgot I also have a gun with a RMR I am getting rid of too, I could just use that.

optics available for the A300:
EoTech EXPS2
Sig Romeo 4T Pro
Trijicon MRO HD
Trijicon RMR Type 2

Advice for A300UP setup

I wanted to get y'alls opinions on a setup I've been thinking about for my A300up. Right now it's stock as it comes from the factory. So far I'm planning on getting the following:

  • Holosun 509T x2
  • GG&G low profile mount (I know they rip off other companies but the price is too good)
  • Streamlight Protac 2.0 Rail Mount Kit
  • Arisaka Inline Mount
  • BFG Vickers Padded Sling with push button QDs
  • Esstac 6rd shotgun card

The main thing I'm iffy about is the light and light mount. I've been debating between going with the Streamlight Protac 2.0 or the Protac HL-X Pro, the Arisaka offset mount or the inline mount.

What are y'all's thoughts? Also, any other recommendations/parts that I might be missing?

TIA

Some fine Italian tactical shotguns

I'm jealous of the STF/12 owners in other countries who actually get the short barrel, folding stock, etc. versions. Chopping the barrel is an option, but I'm hesitating due to the $$$ and not having a spare (and Fabarm showing that throwing a Kahles on top makes it a "long range precision" platform lol). No, I'm not keeping the LPVO on it permanently.

Installing a QD mount into a factory/stock Mossberg Shockwave ravens head grip.

Ok. I did not like my sling on my shockwave attached to that factory installed sling mount on the end of the Ravens head grip. I didn't trust it. And didnt like its position. I bought a Grove Tech QD cup. And a GrovevTec limited direction black nitride sling swivel. After a few emails and you tubes. It was time to try installing it. I chose my sling position. Got the 1/2 fostner bit. And a 9/6-18 thread tap and me n my cousin drilled it out and installed it. JB weld was used on QD cup. Anyway heres a few pics of doing the job. I like the position. I like how it turned out. The factory grip has plenty of meat on it for the QD cup install. My next job is to stipple the grip with a soldering gun for added grip. How's it look guys? I think it turned out nice.

Noobie with a shotgun, looking for a red/green dot

hi, im new to the shotgun world. Just got a mossberg 590 tactical. Im wearing glasses, that makes it hard to aim, so i thinking to add a red dot sight. I looked at amazon, but hard to choose not knowing if it will survive the recoil of a 12Ga.

Can you recommend a red dot sight that will not break the bank, i don't go hunting (yet), just some target shooting at the range for now with this gun.

What Should my Grail Pumpgun be?

Post image
5 Upvotes

**Putting this TL;DR at the top because I will be rambling on for quite a bit:** Between a Mossberg 500/90 series, Remington 870 series, or Winchester 12/1300 series, which would serve as the most flexible platform for barrels for different use cases?

\^ Picture above is Kevin, he's unrelated to the post but I wanted to catch your eye. Hope he got it, he always loves attention.

Now for the rambling. Unfortunately, as seems to be common, I have caught the Shotguntism. I've been deep diving into information on many models and actions, and I've settled on wanting some type of pump action which I can rely on for the rest of my life, and I never had an ol peepaw who could pass his onto me, so I'm starting mostly fresh. I've gotten a Maverick 88 20" as my first, and while I'm mostly happy with it, I know it isn't the most optimal or flexible.

What I'd really like is the ability to have a single receiver with (ideally) a singular magazine tube which I can swap several barrels onto for different uses, long barrels for clays and hunting, shorter (perhaps even SBS) barrels for "tactical" uses or trailer defense.

I've settled on the typical trifecta of American shotguns that I believe will give me what I'm hoping for, but they're all a compromise, and I'd like for folks with more experience to chime in if they'd like. I'm listing my perceived Pros and Cons below for each platform.

***The Mossberg 500/590 Series-***

This is the platform I have the most familiarity with, via range trips with a buddy's Shockwave and my own Maverick 88.

**500/90 PROS-**

\- Best ergonomics imo: the safety and slide release positions are easily the best of any slide action shotgun I've handled in left or right handed shooting with a traditional stock.

\- Best Aftermarket support and production number: as far as I can tell, among all shotguns, and even firearms as a whole, the 500 series has the most accessories designed around it, and quality parts can be easily found, both OEM and third party for cheap.

\- Barrel variety: Oh my lord why did Mossberg make so many different barrels for this thing? I have a strong urge to collect literally every model that's existed just for the hell of it. I'm not even into muzzleloaders aside from the historical novelty but I still kinda want the barrel made for the 500 for it.

**500/90 CONS-**

\- Magazine tube oddities: Unfortunately the multitude of barrels for the 500 requires at least three magazine tubes as far as I can tell; a 5 shot tube which extends roughly 15" out, a 7 shot tube that which extends 20" outwards, as well as additional magazine tubes for the different varieties of 590 barrels, which includes the heavy walled 590A1 with a bayonet lug or the extremely short Shockwave tubes. All of these tubes are essentially incompatible with most other barrels, leading to requiring more parts, more springs, and more wear on the threads due to changing between them.

\- (Please don't crucify me, but) Lack of Historical Character: While the 870 and 1200 were used to great extent in Vietnam onwards, the Mossberg really only seemed to come into its own during the GWOT and afterwards, where it was relegated to second-line duties as the Benelli M4 seems to have been preferred. I would really like to have a nice set of wooden furniture on it, similar to the retrograde stylings that are now available, but it just feels less historically authentic, like dressing up an SKS with aftermarket parts to make it look like an AK. Really this isn't as important as the previous Con, but I felt it worth mentioning.

***The Remington 870 Series-***

I've not as much experience with these, only dry handling at most unfortunately.

**870 Pros-**

\- Action smoothness (alleged): According to most sources I've found who seem to prefer the 870 to the 500, one of their main praises is the smoothness of the action, which is supposedly better than that of most other pumpguns.

\- Magazine tube flexibility: The singular fixed tube of an 870 seems to be compatible with all 870 barrels to a point, excluding police magnums with the factory extended tubes. If more shells are desired, there's many usable extensions available.

\-Chamber length: If I go for a "Super Magnum" model 870, I can chamber up to 3.5 inch shells, something neither a Mossberg 500 nor a Winchester 1200 can do. Although mostly unnecessary, I appreciate having the option open.

\-Vibes: I doubt I really need to explain this, but an 870 just oozes Americana like a 1911 or Garand rifle, I feel somewhat obliged to own one as a citizen of this country, especially if I can acquire or manufacture my own removable duckbill choke, that'd be the dream.

**870 CONS-**

\-Freedom Group: in order to get a legitimate quality shotgun of my liking, I'm forced to bet on the chance that an 870 of my specifications is available or affordable for me, and 1. I don't have any contacts in gun shops currently and 2. I'm a picky bitch who wants a Super Magnum, which were only produced directly by Remington from 2000 to 2007. (though a 2002 one would be poetic to own, as I was also made in that year. haven't been acquired by Freedom Group yet though).

\-Issues when running shells shorter than 2": Like the previous Con for the 500, this is a more minimal con, however again, I like keeping my options open, especially considering I'd also like to reload my own shells as well, and not having to worry about split ends of shells would be neat.

***The Winchester 12/1300 Series:***

**12/1300 Pros-**

\-Historicity: The 1300 and its predecessors can be all traced back to the designs of John Moses Browning, and all seem to be regarded as masterpieces of design for the last century and a quarter. Very little effort would be needed to fashion one to look like a trench gun, assuming it isn't one of these models to begin with.

\-Action: the 1300 action has a rotating bolt, allowing it to theoretically be cycled quicker than other pumpguns, excluding some exceptions (yes, I'll get to the SXP and Nova when I do some honorable mentions), however this takes a little more training to get used to, as it obviously interferes with the now standard Haught-taught "Push-Pull" method.

\-Magazine flexibility: Similar to the 870, it has a hollow tube magazine, which can be affixed with an extension if needed, save the defender models with equal length tubes matching the barrels.

**12/1300 CONS-**

\-Parts availability and durability: No new spare parts are being made for the 1200 or 1300 since Winchester stopped making the shotguns in the US, and with the purported fragility of certain parts like the slide assembly ring and older plastic pieces, I'd be concerned it wouldn't be able to be repaired or modified to a standard I'd deem acceptable.

\-Relative rarity: Significantly less 1300s and 1200s were made than the standard Remington or Mossberg, and due to this they're more sought after by collectors.

Now, there were some other considerations I had for this list, mainly the Benelli Nova series and Winchester SXP series, however my issues with these mostly come down to aesthetics or place of manufacture, as the SXP is essentially a Turkish-made 1300.

All in all, these shotguns are all good guns, but if anyone else has suggestions regarding any pros, cons, or intricacies of using any of these weapons, I'd very much appreciate the advice. Thank you!

870 Wingmaster modification

Asking for insight. I have an Remington 870 Wingmaster. I want to swap the 30" barrel for an 18.5 or a 20. Which barrel do I need? Or, should I trade the 870 in for a purpose built home defense piece?

Had anyone put a Kynshot buffer on a ported pump action?

Post image
14 Upvotes

My grandpa just passed away and I inherited a BNIB Remington 870 Tactical. I'm planning on sending it to Vang Comp for the full barrel upgrade and I'm also thinking of putting in a Kynshot buffer to make it extra nice to shoot.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this before to either a Vang Comp ported gun or any other ported shotgun. I'm specifically trying to make sure there aren't any potential conflicts thar may arise from combining the two systems.

TIA fellas šŸ¤™
