What "arts, crafts, and sciences" have the High Elves actually contributed?

There's a dialogue line in Morrowind: "The Empire is built on the arts, crafts, and sciences of the High Elves. "

What are said developments?

And while it makes sense on a basic level that Altmer (alongside Imperials) would be the innovators of Tamriel, I'm curious to see examples of what the Altmer pride themseleves on so much.

For example, the Direnni are commonly known as the ones who laid the foundation for modern alchemy, conjuration, and enchanting.
Can we attribute certain architecture or art trends, judicial practices or technological development to the Altmer?

I'm open to more exaggarated sources or even dubious claims, I'm just trying to conceptualize a further response to that first quote I've left.

Is the Daedric Crescent in Morrowind the Sword of the Moon Reiver?

So for context in Battlespire the weapon carried by Si'ess (who is the dark seducer who has the crescent on the cover and opening cutscene) is a specific artifact called the Broadsword of the Moon Reiver (being called broadsword and looking like a generic sword is most likely just due to Battlespire artifacts being random generic items with unique enchantments like the Spear of Bitter Mercy, and is shortened to just Sword in dialogue and notes) and since outside gameplay she is always shown to be wielding a daedric crescent it is pretty clear that the daedric crescent in Battlespire is the Sword of the Moon Reiver and therefore the weapon made of Dagon's essence, just with no unique art for it.

All the evidence for this was discovered by a UESP user named Hagrin Frost-Eye, and his more detailed explanation is here: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore_talk:Daedric_Crescent

While the Daedric Crescent's name and lore in Morrowind is most likely the result of it's writer (understandably) misunderstanding/being unaware of the previously established lore of the weapon on Battlespire's cover when wanting to add it, it doesn't exactly go against Battlespire's lore as:

  1. There are several daedric structures in Battlespire with similar crescent shapes
  2. It is established in Battlespire that daedra often fashion weapons to mimic the shape of their patron prince's artifacts, with Hernes crafting replicas of the spear of bitter mercy and thinking the real one is simply a very well made replica (though not as good as their own) when you obtain it
  3. No weapon has a unique appearance in battlespire so retroactively there could be many swords used by daedra that are actually crescents (this is part is just speculation on my part)

With all this in mind, I wonder whether or not (from a lore standpoint) the Crescent wielded by Volar in Morrowind is actually just a regular crescent that happened to be undestroyed or if it survived because it is the Sword of the Moon Reiver, it's name and significance lost to mortals, and surviving because it is unable to truly be destroyed since it's a daedric artifact.

EDIT: Clarified that the sword has no unique art and that the part about crescents being in battlespire would be retroactive

Should Divine-Worshipping Mages despise Conjuration magic?

sorry, weird question but i’ve always been a bit confused by this

i have this Breton character, Emilie Dusant, and she’s some talented mage and daughter of some Breton lord yadda yadda

when i’ve been playing and writing her, she’s a devout worshipper of Julianos and abhors the Daedra, but she’s also incredibly fascinated with the Dwemer and studies them.

a lot of the Conjuration spells i’ve found in this modlist i’m playing (Nordic Souls) have been to summon Dwemer machines, which is cool! but i always thought Conjuration magic was straight up about doing Daedra shit, like bringing them from their respective planes and whatnot. would the Dawnguard and the Vigilants of Stendarr also be using Conjuration magic? i figured they won’t because that goes completely against their whole thing

same for this Altmer Priestess of Auriel character i’m playing right now, Nimarie, i feel like due to the nature of her being an Altmer and worshipping the Aedra that she’d abhor anyone who uses Conjuration magic because that associates with the Daedra

i guess my real question is, would a mage put aside all that worshipping shit just to use Conjuration magic to be more powerful? or would they view Conjuration magic as evil Daedra-related actions and avoid using it?

thanks y’all!

Question about Dwemer Automatons

• Upvotes

How were the Dwemer able to make their Automatons cognitive. They clearly posses some degree of cognition since they can respond and adapt to their environment, but I can’t find anything mention any sort of brain. At first I thought it might be the soul gem or dynamo core but most sources suggest the soul gem is a powerful source and the dynamo core essentially uses the soul gems energy to produce heat to power the constructs steam engine.

Does Trinimac/Malacath have any animals associated with him?

I need to know because I'm looking to put in an art commission of the Nordic Gods as furry characters, each God's species corresponding to their associated animal totem, so Shor = fox furry, Kyne = hawk furry etc

The tricky thing is that 2 of the Testing Gods, Herma Mora and Mauloch, don't really have their own animal totem. Luckily Mora already has plenty of animalistic elements to his character so he was simple enough, he can be depicted as a rabbit-squid hybrid tentacle crab thing

Mauloch on the other hand doesn't really have much to go off of, at least not to my admittedly apprentice-level lore knowledge. Does anyone smarter than me know of any prominent animals associated with Malacath or even Trinimac because I need to know

Some lore questions for fanfiction

Hello, I'm writing a little fanfiction about my Argonian in Skyrim and I want to make it lore friendly. The idea is that she is born under a sick hist which makes her weird and frail and lost.

Is there anything else that could happen if the hist is sick?

Is Galathil, the face sculptors service illegal?

I also have a Khajiit who was very badly injured and is now disfigured.

Is there some kind of magic or ritual that can fix him?

I imagine that normal restoration only heals wounds but leaves scars.

Maybe something sinister or some kind of illusion? I dont know.

If the Khajiit touches a Peryite artifact and get sick, can he be healed?

How long is the journey from Winterhold to Markarth?

Do bound weapons, armor, & animals have to be weapons, armor, & normal animals? Can I bound anything?

Like a toothbrush or straight razor? Could I make ear plugs? A valve? Maybe a prosthesis? A bottle? Luggage?

What are the limits?

Can you summon an ethereal version of a dremora? Not an actual dremora, but a fake one that looks like a dremora with the blue ethereal glow you see in Skyrim.

Could House Ravenwatch have thralls they keep and suck blood from, just like the Volkihar Clan does?

If so, then I bet the Ravenwatch Vampires treat their cattle far better than the Volkihar Vampires treat theirs. I wish the Volkihar Dragonborn could make their Vampire brethren treat their thralls better, though at least they seem to treat the Moth Priest thrall well.

Apocrypha Regarding The Black Atlas of Lyg

Regarding the Black Atlas of Lyg

By Callax Dorminus Haeccides, Librarium-Curate of the Imperial Mages Guild.

To his Eminence Chancellor Ocato

19th of Second Seed, 3E 389

In the past, The Mages’ Guild had a task of surveying the cosmos for esoteric realms over which the Emperor may eventually exert his primacy.

Having already brokered treaties with the 16 Princes of Oblivion by default of being Emperor of the White Gold Tower;

Most planes of Oblivion proved trivial for occupation given the proper ritual engagements and so aren't an overall concern.

But as you might have gathered, given our frequent reports over the past few years; The Realm of Hermaeus Mora has proven a matter of intrigue with rumors of a new sort of “Black Book” passing into his realm of Apocrypha.

One that might give the Emperor more resources and influence in the Mundex Plane.

The existence of the Black Books of Hermaeus Mora are well documented but are not of themselves well understood. Those who read the Black Books scarcely return unchanged.

I will leave it to your imagination as to what those horrid changes might be as the topic of this report is of a peculiar Instance of Black Book known to be in the possession of the Scholarchs of Apocrypha as “The Black Atlas of Lyg.”

In short, it is reported that it is a book of charts and maps detailing a series of strange incongruous geographic locations all supposedly connected in the same space, a sort of “Mismatched Continent”

The book is said to be divided into twelve chapters that all contain geographic and ecological and historical reports claiming Fully Accurate description of “The Continent of Lyg.”

Although the author of the book appears to vary page by page, rather even paragraph by paragraph, sometimes purporting the existence of lands created or destroyed by various famous or obscure divine figures of the past, present or even the future.

It is said all of the Histories of Each Chapter converge into a singular historic motif of a divine creator or destroyer being, having a bleeding hole gouged in their chest, before the chapter ends by describing a torrential flood of black liquid, and the next chapter starting as if the previous did not exist.

But you may begin to ask why this artifact may be of any interest to his Exalted Excellency's rightful reign over the Mundus.

You see, “The Black Atlas” purportedly contains a kind of tenuous fabric to its pages.

It is reported that under certain conditions, the chart-work ripples like water, and one can travel right into the various landscapes that the documents depict.

These are not mere trespass into dimensions of Oblivion; these are traversals into elsewise unrecorded realms within the very fabric of Mundus itself dubbed “Adjacent Places”

Inhabitants of these dimensions appear to be always long extinct or displaced into the outlying oceans surrounding their aching maroon landscapes. Colonial efforts regarding these places should prove trivial.

It is by this reason that these spaces are of immense interest to the Mages Guild in regards to providing the Empire access to an untapped array of mineral resources, farmland and other provisions, as well as having an effective military advantage in that transport between these adjacent places and the regular mundus simply requires the presence of the Black Atlas itself and the requisite portal rituals.

We merely request the Emperor's aid in Gold and Steel in acquiring the book itself from The Wizards of Hermaeus Mora's realm, who doubtlessly use such an artifact to defile The Emperor's Sacred Land and Harass his people in secret.

Enclosed alongside this letter is a writ detailing the resources the Mages’ Guild believes is required to acquire this artifact.

Signed, Haeccides,

Glory Be To Emperor, Country, and Red Diamond

Were the ancient Nordic trio right to send Alduin into the future?

What were they thinking when they did this? It's true that this move brought thousands of years of peace (from dragons) to Tamriel/Skyrim but they're literally just screwing over the future. They didn't know when he'd arrive in the future, or what kind of warriors would be there to combat Alduin. There are no Thu'um users in 4E Skyrim apart from Ulfric, The Greybeards and us as the Dragonborn. Thank God a Dragonborn happened to be incarnated in this time period.

Did Akatosh actually steal ownership of the Sun off of Magnus after it was created?

“The Blood of a Daughter of Coldharbour will blind the eye of the dragon”?
As far as I’m aware, Magnus isn’t depicted as a Dragon in appearance.

Akatosh(AuRiEl) be like: that’s a nice thing you’ve created. It would be a shame if it wasn’t yours anymore:). Or did Magnus nope out of dodge so hard he wasn’t even aware of the turd he left in the sky.

On a Serious note, I really don’t like Bethesda screwing the Lore up with Dawnguard I feel like the DLC writers wanted to do their own thing instead of following expanded Lore material.
The Eye of the dragon line in the prophecy was written by Vyrthur supposedly, a Snow Elf. Who believe Auriel, supposed the same entity as Akatosh. looks like an Elf, not a Dragon.
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDD!!!!!!!

Elder Scrolls Lore has given me a stroke three times trying to comprehend it all.
Apparently Akatosh’s true form is a planet that appears in the sky. But is a realm that is actually infinite in size. However whenever he chooses to appear in Mundus, he takes the form of a dragon. 😭

(Fan lorebook) The Shadow-trappers.

[Been thinking about this idea for a while. Basically wondered how a cameras or photographers could look in universe. Hope it fits here.]

The practice of shadow-trapping is quite obscure and exotic indeed.
In the end the price for a session is too expensive to be worth-while for mere commoners and most nobles prefer to be immortalized in much more detailed form by the way of painting instead.

There however were quite few curious servants the kings and eccentric nobles taking interest in the practice.
And also some purely not willing to wait in one single position several hours before their portrait is finalized.

How does it work do I hear you ask?
Traditionally, the process is as simple as the namesake implies not. No trapping of shadows, freezing of their form, or forcing them to become an art project is happening.

Instead all shadow-trapper needs is knowledge to cast pure Meridian light, or have scroll or staff (client's favorite for the thud summoner makes while casting) imbued with such spell as well as pair or more of blindfolds. Pure Meridian light is known for turning people into physical equals of the Moth priests.
Such intense light makes the very walls pale on contact and by the end of the session an outline of the client is formed by parts of the light being obstructed by their very body.

There however is another process.
Instead of the "trapping" of the "shadows" some shadow-trappers simply brew a concoction of bleeding crown, juniper berries, and just a slight bit of moon sugar, which they brew until it is burn charred, apply this thin layer of salve on the desired wall, let the dark slimy liquid be absorbed by the wall, and cast simple Mageflare letting all unobstructed solution be burnt away by the spell.

Although more traditional shadow-trappers call practitioner of this sessions "charlatans", they are the ones to become much more desirable for clients for this practice doesn't carry a risk of blindness with itself as well as not carrying temporary, yet quite undesirable skin darkening.

One Auridon noble by the name of Laryss raised a complaint that for 2 weeks after the session her skin condition gave her too much of a bosmeri appearance.

The Lusty Argonian Maid: A Mechanical Analysis

Archivist's Note:
Alavani Arano, Clockwork Apostle and Archivox scholar of Tamrielic literary curiosities, encountered the following adaptation while reviewing the work of the Factotum designated the Clockwork Archivist, whose assignment to catalogue significant examples of Tamrielic dramatic literature resulted in an unexpected encounter with Crassius Curio's celebrated play, The Lusty Argonian Maid.

The machine had classified the scene as a domestic sanitation scenario involving an employer, an employee, and an improperly maintained weapon. It had further concluded that the dialogue contained an unusual quantity of redundant phrasing for what appeared to be a straightforward exchange concerning household duties.

I confess to some irritation that the Clockwork Archivist's considerable analytical faculties appear to have deserted it at precisely the point where a mortal audience might find the scene most entertaining. Its report proceeds with admirable mechanical precision, yet somehow arrives at conclusions that would astonish even the most decorous of readers. I have refrained from correcting its findings. There is, after all, a certain scholarly value in observing how a mind entirely untroubled by innuendo might attempt to catalogue the works of Crassius Curio.

ACT IV, SCENE III, CONTINUED

Lifts-Her-Tail: Negative, respected male individual. My present objective is limited to the removal of dust and other unwanted particulate matter from your private chambers.

Crantius Colto: Is the removal of dust your sole intended purpose, diminutive employee? From my chambers specifically?

Lifts-Her-Tail: I cannot determine the implied secondary meaning of your inquiry, master. My biological classification is Argonian, and my occupational designation is maid.

Crantius Colto: Affirmative, my small spherical confection. Your lower limbs exhibit considerable structural strength, and your posterior appendage possesses pleasing curvature.

Lifts-Her-Tail: Your unsolicited assessment of my anatomical characteristics is producing an elevated level of social discomfort, sir.

Crantius Colto: You may disregard this discomfort. Current environmental conditions indicate that you are in no immediate danger in my presence.

Lifts-Her-Tail: I must resume my assigned sanitation duties, sir. Failure to complete them may result in severe disciplinary consequences administered by the female proprietor of this residence.

Crantius Colto: Sanitation duties, you say? I have identified an implement requiring immediate attention. Please undertake the necessary procedures to improve its surface finish.

Lifts-Her-Tail: An objection: the implement in question exceeds my initial expectations regarding its dimensions. Completion of the requested maintenance procedure may require an entire nocturnal cycle.

Crantius Colto: Time availability is sufficient, my agreeable associate. Time availability is exceptionally sufficient.

How large are the larger nordic ruins in lore?

Something that's commonly discussed in the Elder Scrolls series is how the games downscale the size of the world spaces for gameplay purposes. A common example of this is both modern cities as well as Dwemer ruins, for example.

In lore Whiterun alone would probably be larger than all hold capitals in game combined, and blackreach should be the size of a small country in itself.

Now, I have wondered what the actual size of larger Nordic ruins would be. Some examples might be Labyrinthian, Saarthal, Forelhost, and Skuldafn.

Many nordic ruins are just tombs, so it stands to reason that they are a practical size, relatively speaking. But a few of them are former cities. Now I wonder what the lore accurate size of these cities would be, given the time they were constructed. If we want to draw real-life parallels, I would like to point out the Roman settlement of Carnuntum, near nowadays Vienna, Austria, and If I remember correctly, that settlement used to be much much larger and densly populated compared to how the area is populated today. By that measure, I would argue that ancient times isn't a direct link to population size or urbanization.

I imagine Saarthal or Labyrinthian ought to be vast megacities relative to their time period. Probably close to the larger cities in modern-day Skyrim. Smaller fortified settlements like Forelhost were probably the size cities like Markath, as they are depicted in game.

The only thing I can't wrap my head around is Skuldafn.

It's a Necropolis with an immense size, even in game, and it's built for dragons, with a portal to Sovngarde. I feel like it should be the pinnacle of development, architecture and craftsmanship for ancient nords. Something like the great pyramids are in our time.

What are your thoughts on this?

The Immortality of Dragons

To start this off, I understand that dov can't be killed except by other dov or dovahkiin. If dov were consuming their brethren's souls right and left since the dawn age, how would a dovah be able to be resurrected if another dovah already came and absorbed their power? Given how many dragon burial mounds in game and expanding by 10-20x since Skyrim is a scaled down version of the actual size, there had to have been a hell of a lot of dov if there are so few left and there were dovahkiin throughout recorded history consuming their souls.

If the dovahkiin dies after consuming hundreds of dragon souls, is he functionally immortal like a dovah is, or would the souls be released back into the world to be rejoined with the bones of the dov since the dovahkiin is a man and therefore not immortal as a dovah is?

How did people deal with tongues?

The thu'um used to be relatively common farther back in nordic history before jurgen did his thing and made it all about worship but before that nord armies would enlist tongues in their armies rather than siege weapons since they could just shout down enemies walls which leads me to the question of how did opposing armies deal with this? were nords smaller in number or were mages just much more commonplace in armies back then for the same reason

Are actual effects of decay, corruption, cruelty, injustice, destruction etc. connected to daedric influence? Or disfavour from gods

Let's say ther are those things that are not directly caused by daedric lords' meddling, but bad things could happen when something goes bad. Who do you blamed? Are they ultimately part of the daily struggles of aedra vs daedra (light vs dark)? Perhaps disfavour from gods due to unpious acts or that their instutes are defiled or tenets disobeyed? Would theologians claim that human shortcomings, environment, historical background or flaw in a system equally can be blamed (but then what causes these)?

What is evil and how it works in a metaphysical and magickal sense?

New Dwemeris development in ESO?

In ESO’s new high seas event we use the Xirkn-Zel mechanism to dive down to the Abecean sea floor, which is translated in the book on the ship as “city under dark water”.

We already know the root word “irkn” to generally refer to darkness from the words “irkng” (to darken) and “irkng” (to cloud), and “Zel” to mean city (assumingely referring to an under(ground) city, with distinction from the word “Fell” which also means city).

So would this new development be a new word entirely “Xirkn” to mean in some form “dark water”, or a new prefix “X-“ to alter a word to pertaining to water in some way?

I am not a linguist in any way so I may be missing the mark entirely

Edit: fixed spoiler for those who haven’t played through the new event

Apocrypha Letter concerning recent Telvanni discoveries.

Enclosed, I have included the original paper, as well as the initial research note produced by one of our apprentice wizards, by the name of Sarvyn Drathis. The initial paper is nonsensical. It posits explanations for unseen phenomena, yet it seems to explain them in a unified manner.

The discovery of this so called treatise has been by pure chance. Two centuries prior, my apprentice uncovered the writing among other research notes and papers. It was the only such note which failed to attribute any author. He translated the portions he was able to and sent the paper and his notes through the proper channels to arrive at my personal desk.

The notes by apprentice Drathis have been included, errors and all, so that you might reduce this confounding puzzle into some answers. Of note, in Drathis commentary, is the lack of mention of the shifting runes located on the initial paper itself. Translation of the body of the text was simple enough, yet the runes located at the bottom of this single page have evaded even my understanding.

The runes appear slanted. The reading of which makes them seem to shift. New runes appear, before disappearing again, never to return. And no logical translation can be offered to explain their presence in the work. It is the singular reason for consideration of the ideas contained within.

I have applied the claims made within the paper to our understanding of the Dwemer. And the results have been shocking, to say the least. The implications of this theory are far reaching and potentially world ending. The enclosed package should appear ordinary, so as to not draw suspicion. My hope is that the scribes in Vivec city will be able to compile the necessary sources and return the contents of the delivery, post haste.

Apocrypha The Evils of Daedra, and their Defenders

(Note: This text, written in 4E 2, became very popular among the people of the Empire despite its deeply anti intellectual and unfair arguments and biases. The Mages Guild rereleases this text in 4E 5 with notes from a trusted member, Magician Andrean Silvanus, which will expose the faulty arguments of the author. While this text is foolish, it is of great historical importance as an example of the rhetoric that has led to the (no doubt soon to be a thing of the past) distrust towards mages and conjurors after the tragic events of the Oblivion Crisis.)

Curse the demons (Note: demons is a foolish and unprofessional term for Daedra, showing the lack of academic knowledge the author possesses) who ransacked our homes, killed our families, broke our Empire! Despise the hated cultists who trafficked with these beings, who were the authors of our suffering, who summoned them into our realm to wreak havoc! (Note: The Mythic Dawn is not thought to have summoned Daedra in the traditional sense, rather having opened portals to the Deadlands directly through rituals unknown to the Guild.) These things are the cries of every man, woman and child who lost family, friends, land in the Oblivion Crisis! These things are the truth our souls scream to us in our grief. Now, we yearn to crusade against the enemy, tear down their shrines, make their worshippers taste the pain we have tasted.

And yet there are those among us that disagree. They defend the monstrous Daedra (Note: Daedra are not typically classified as monsters) and their summoners, and continue to practice this devilish magic even in the very walls of the Imperial City!

They say that the Daedra are not evil, that they are forces of nature that cannot be blamed for their actions. (Note: Do you blame Kynareth when a ship sinks in a storm? Do you blame Akatosh when food expires and you are starving? Then do not blame Dagon for BEING Destruction, or Molag Bal for BEING Domination. You may find that you would miss these things more than you guess were they to disappear.) Worthless words! The Daedra have minds and free will, they may choose to kill or spare a man as any mortal does. Indeed, their immortality means they have much less to risk from mercy than us children of Stendarr! And yet, they choose to kill and burn, for no purpose but amusement! (Note: Logical fallacy) The Daedra despise us feeble ones, and take pleasure in our despair. Is that not evil? If it is not, what use in the morality granted to us by the Divines at all?

Even now, as you read this, listen closely. Can you hear them? In your local guild halls, worshippers (Note: Mages Guild members who interact with Daedra under safe and controlled conditions with the Daedra bound by Conjuration magic are not Daedra worshippers) of these foul creatures are making deals with them, using their weapons and magics, even summoning them to this plane!

They say they have them under their control. They say that it is safe. (Note: Despite what ridiculous accounts such as A Tragedy In Black may have you believe, incidents of daedric summoning going wrong are exceedingly rare, unless the summoner deliberately provokes their summon. We trust in the competence of our guild mages not to do something so reckless.)

But the ruins of Kvatch, the City, and our honoured clans tell otherwise.

The mages laugh, in their arrogance. Protected by their demonic masters, they think themselves safe from our justice.

But one day soon, their dark service will be exposed. And our crusade shall find a new enemy. (Note: Call to violence exposes the barbaric and bigoted mentality of the author.)

4E 201 Note written by Urag gro-Shub of the College of Winterhold: This text is one of the few remaining examples of the ill fated (and hilarious) attempts of the Mages Guild to save their reputation prior to the demise of the organisation in 4E 26. The Guild distributed this version of the text themselves, hoping to expose it as foolish. They did not. In fact, this only worsened matters for the Guild and made the text all the more popular among the common people. The Guild hastily recalled all copies of the noted version, demoted Andrean Silvanus to Evoker, and attempted to pretend the whole embarassing affair had never happened. Despite this, several other texts were noted in the same way in the coming years.

The Mages Guild truly did not realise the desperate position they were in after the magical disaster of the Oblivion Crisis until it was far too late. It is lamentable, as the Guild, for all its arrogance and unfair restrictions, was a great force for magickal learning across the Empire, and the institution had a long and respectable history prior to its inglorious and unceremonious closure.

The anonymous author of the original text is thought to be a Nord, who had lost several family members in the Oblivion Crisis and wanted vengeance. There are theories among academics that he was even a founding member of the Vigilants of Stendarr later in life. I attempted to confirm this with the Vigilants in their hall in Skyrim, but unlike Silvanus predicted, the distrust magic and magic users face has not disappeared, especially in Skyrim, and so I was sadly unable to confirm anything.

For all its farcical nature, this text’s history does demonstrate the long running and heated story of one of the most common debates among citizens, priests, mages and mortals of all stripes in Tamriel: Are the Daedra evil? Even on the morning I began to write this note, I heard two apprentices locked in argument on the subject.

As for my own thoughts on the matter? The Daedra are perhaps not evil. They may kill and burn for no reason but their own natures. They may also be evil. They may ransack and murder for their amusement.
