Stoicism Becoming an Object of Distress
For much of my life, I have run on impulse. Recently, I have been looking into Stoicism and have adhered to the principle of focusing on my actions and responses instead of external things, including the outcomes of my choices and how they are perceived or taken. This has worked for about two weeks.
Over the past months, as I have tried to become a stoic, I have had constant "seasons" every few weeks, wherein my mind is in distress and mentally overloaded to the point of impeding on my actions. I have tried to find stoic help concerning this, but it all appears to return to focusing on what you can control. The problem I have is that I cannot seem to focus or understand how to. When I attempt to focus on what I can control, I am brought to a state of distress in being confused how much I focus on, what constitutes a just choice, what it even means to focus, etc.
I simply have little to no mental clarity as focusing on what I can control has become an object of distress. In addition, my mind tried to remember the teachings, and yet also try not to remember them. Both things provide me with mental distress. I have tried to put it all aside and do the opposite. Both now seem to yield actions that I am not pleased with, and both yield distress.
I seek freedom and clarity, peace, not just in feeling, but in focus. I have tried to accept that distress and turmoil and proceed, moving on, but that, too, does not seem to work. Please help, as a loop similar to this has been unending for the past two and a half months.
I likewise feel like I am living on a ridge, trying to remember what is important to remember, and so on. It is burning me out.
