Discussion Topic How do people start writing songs with a melody?

• Upvotes

I've been studying songwriting for a few months and a lot of people say "let the melody dictate the chords". But for me its kind of difficult to create a melody without chords. I get the appeal of starting with the melody because then its easier to choose chords that complement the melody, but its something I struggle with. To the people who do, How do you start with the melody when writing songs? Can you really think of cool melodic ideas regularly before a single chord is placed?

Feedback Request A song for Owen Hart called "Closed Eyes, Open Heart"

I've written emotional songs about my wife and daughter, but for whatever reason this is the song that makes me more emotional to sing than anything I've written. It's from Bret’s point of view, and I tried to write it with honesty and respect for the Hart family, and for Owen. Would love to know if you think I've found that balance.

It's part of an ongoing series of folk songs about the '90s Attitude Era, so let me know if there are other wrestlers from that time period you'd like to hear about.

Like the title says I’ve been a professional songwriter for 2 years now (working in the music industry and making a living from it) and I see lots of questions on here quite a bit about the ins and outs of that system. Would love to answer questions!

Feedback Request Double track vocals???

• Upvotes

I recorded this just using BandLab and the mic on my phone. It’s just an idea. I’m thinking about taking further. It is the first time I’ve double tracked vocals. I’m not sure if I like it.

Feedback Request One of my better efforts, any feedback is appreciated

Lyrics

Chewing ginger for the changing moods, peppermint and menthol lime

Nauseation taking hold again, bite my lip and see it through

Your emaciated and it’s showing, I can see your ribs from time to time

Try to throw up on an empty stomach, just cough up the hair you’re gonna lose

Least you got to taste a little beauty, holding out for waking with an appetite

Dirty hands distill the vinegar, pour it on your open sores

Sanitize your frayed and peeling skin, wipe away a practice smile

This is how it feels would you believe it, didn’t think it’s what we had in store

Living off of mold under the table, licking paint off freshly covered chairs

It’s a hell I crawled myself right into, flower sorrows giving way to withered thorns

Come so far and finally taking flight, nectar poison says goodbye

Discussion Topic How to use a topic that’s been done a lot feel less generic?

l’m fine with writing with a common topic as long as I keep it interesting and prevent it from feeling like a song that could’ve been something anyone else could’ve written. I know that to avoid this, it’s best to add my own specific details from my own experience but that’s a little hard for this song specifically.

For this song, it’s about the situation of being the dork who gets one-sided feelings for the popular kid; on an album where the greater theme is angsty loneliness. It’s hard to incorporate my own scenes or symbols into the lyrics since the experience had no clear start, climax, ending. There are specific moments I can write in mind, but I don’t know how to make them hold up into a full song since they’re mostly about being used to feed a delusion since that is also a popular way to handle writing the topic.

I’m okay with the use of platitudes (to an extent!) but I don’t want an entire song to be full of saying “It’ll never be ‘us.’” “I love you enough to let you go.” “The heart wants what it wants.” “You couldn’t remember what my name was.” “I wish I could quit thinking about you.” “You’re perfect.” “Everyone laughed at me.” “Snuck a glance at you.” “You’ll move on and forget I exist.” Cause I think it feels like kind of asking people to feel bad and relate instead of letting them do it genuinely and it won’t let me walk away from writing with the feeling that I’ve written an honest confession that I can put to rest and I personally wanna somehow put personality into it and kinda show how messy such a simple feeling is and also kind of get ugly; have there be a human realism and embarrassment to how the crush felt and how it dragged on even after people joking about it died down.

I have written a song about this before, but I didn’t walk away feeling that I still had something bigger to say. I don’t want to just quit on this topic since I think I wanna keep challenging myself to improve but I was feeling stuck. So maybe if you have rhetorical questions to get me thinking deeper and maybe get inspired by that or if you have other ways of advice to help the lyrics of the song feel like a vulnerable and human confession.

Discussion Topic How do you get into that songwriting “flow state”?

I struggle with finishing songs and ideas so much!

it occurs to me that I work a very creative (non musical) job where I get to create pretty much whatever I want, write my own scripts. When an idea really grabs me I get excited and get stuck straight in, I envision exactly what I want to do, and when that inspiration hits I can write my script start to finish like it’s nothing and then I create and finish the project. This is how I do my work and I never run out of ideas- but if I just sat down and tried to force an idea I’ll struggle.

How do you achieve that flow state when you’re making music?

Discussion Topic How do you come up with singing ideas for your lyrics?

This is my first post here, the title says all,but I'm going to explain this further on the post.

(I think that the discussion topic fits more to this, i couldn't choose between feedback and discussion,if im wrong, tell me so I can change this later.)

I have this question because I know how to write stuff, but i get confused on the singing part sometimes, because there are many ways of singing something, and I end up singing the same way someone else sang on a song I've heard before. 🤓

Say your opinion! Do you have a tip, suggestion or an idea to "overcome" or fix this? If so,feel free to tell on the comments, thanks! :D

Discussion Topic Are these lyrics too basic/simple

Writing this song with friend and needs a lot of work but do you think the lyrics and especially the rhymes are too obvious and simple/basic.

Lyrics:
Mischievous Smile
Whenever im with you im the clown
Always putting me putting me down
But I'd be lying if I wasn't in the clouds
Anytime i see you coming round

Now i gotta go and cut it on my own for a while
Rediscover what it takes to make me smile
Try fitting in with the ranking crowd
Seem so out of place when it gets so loud

Voice gets weak when i hear you call
Always finding ways just to keep me walled
Take it on the chin but i just cant square it
Hit me in the eyes with a bat

I’m talking sunshine im thinking no more blue or grey,
I know its all mine something I know that I could change
I felt back yesterday no need for new display,
Why can't you be so sure, it shouldn't be so tough

(Solo)

Left your car right at the station, asking too misgiving.
I’ll try my best to be here more, empathy can be quite a chore

Saw your face when I hit the station asking too misgiving.
I'll try my best to be here more, sympathy could get me back on shore,
Don’t know where and don't know when, won't show up with an empty plan

You turned my whole world upside down
Opened up and locked it down
Never pick up too quick when I call
Trying to drop the anchor but our ship wont fall
A flash of light, abandoned hope
A walk in the park, a silent smoke
MIschievous smile, stay for a while, only comes out for me in the aisle

I’m talking sunshine im thinking no more blue or grey,
I know its all mine something I know that I could change
I felt back yesterday no need for new

Let's Collaborate! Looking for a Producer

Hi! I'm an independent singer-songwriter. I'm looking for a producer who enjoys indie pop / bedroom pop inspired by beabadoobee and Clairo.

I already have original song ideas and written lyrics, and I'm looking for someone to help bring them to life through instrumentals, arrangement, and production.

My budget is very limited at the moment, so I'm looking for someone open to collaborating for credits and an agreed revenue split rather than an upfront fee. I'm happy to discuss fair terms depending on each person's contributions.

I'm hoping to find someone interested in building a long-term musical collaboration with us, not just a one-time project!

If you're interested, please DM me with some of your work. Thank you!

Discussion Topic Anyone else get way too many musical ideas?

Do you ever get so many (for me vocal, guitar, bass, synth) melodies in your head that you just can't keep up with them anymore?

I used to love it, but lately it's getting a bit annoying. There's always some new melody playing in my head, no matter what I'm doing. I've actually started trying to ignore and just let them go, because sometimes I can barely even focus on what someone is saying to me ( I hope I haven't gone crazy : D )

Anyone else have this problem?

Let's Collaborate! Looking for a writing/production partner – high-voltage indie rock (QOTSA/Arctic Monkeys vibe)

I’m an independent artist/multi-instrumentalist working on a project heavily inspired by that raw, dark, groove-heavy indie rock sound (think Humbug-era Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, and gritty guitar fuzz).

I write, record, and track my own guitars and vocals, but I often find myself deep in the tunnel vision of a solo bedroom producer. I’m looking to connect with a fellow songwriter/producer who loves this specific aesthetic to bounce ideas off, co-write, or help shape arrangements.

What I bring to the table: Solid rock guitar riffs, lead/harmony vocals, structural ideas, and raw multi-tracks ready to go. I can also lay down rhythm sections or lay into some heavy fuzz/wah textures for your tracks if you ever need a gritty guitar injection!

If you’re into dark grooves, weird tape echoes, and psych-rock vibes, drop a comment or shoot me a DM. I'd love to hear what you're working on too. Cheers!

So I'm in the process of writing a song and at first I want a simple song about anime/ an old crush and it evolved.😅 Now a 2 minute sound is almost 5. Should I cut out the end progression cuz it's too repetitive.

Discussion Topic Why isn't there a closer relationship between theory and songwriting? Especially in Pop and Rock Music?

Hey everyone,

I am asking in particular about Rock Music. I wonder why many musicians don't say, "We tried writing songs in the key of C." In interviews many rock music in rock and pop talk primarily about inspiration but less about the technical details. Even in Guitar specific interviews they will talk about strumming patterns but rarely about how they actually wrote the song, using music theory to explain their songwriting process.

In addition, in Pop Music the only composer I heard talking about music theory is Rick Nowels. He said that he would listen to Lana Del Rey sing a vocal melody and then he would try to see which chords might work with that melody. However, he didn't go into detail and explain which chords he chose and why.
