Story with Vacant Storefront?

Does anyone know the story with this vacant storefront? From posters in the windows, it looks like it was still open in mid-2020.

I voted early! You can, too

• Upvotes
Pretty tree photo for algorithm tax!

Early voting starts today in Mass -- if you're registered in Somerville, you can pop up to the City Hall and vote today until 5. (I'll paste the whole schedule below.) It was my first time voting early and I didn't know what to expect. If you're the same way, I'll tell you!

Voting early -- how to!

Follow the signs to the front door. Up the stairs and inside, you'll more signs that say "VOTING DOWNSTAIRS". Or you can ask the very nice, only slightly beleaguered person at the desk! Downstairs, a nice person will hand you an envelope. You fill out the top three lines, then take that to the window. A different nice person will type a bunch of things into the computer and then hand you the two pieces of your ballot.

Take the ballot over to the booths and fill out all the bubbles, as usual. There are bunch of initiatives, and the one about keeping cannabis legal is on the front side of the second page, if that's important to you.

You tuck both pages into the envelope, seal it, and drop it in. The first nice person will give you your sticker! I love the sticker. I was ruined by childhood gold stars.

Registration deadline is Oct 24

If you're not registered -- you've got a week! You must register by 5 (in person) or by midnight (online) next Saturday.

Suspicious person on Highland

I just walked into my living room to grab something and saw a suspicious person peering into my windows. The windows are a good 10 feet from the sidewalk, so there is no chance of it being a passerby. All I saw was the silhouette and it appeared to be a tall person with a hood on...they saw me and it seems headed down Putnam, but I am unsettled. Just wanted to put it out there for anyone who may be in the area.

• Upvotes

hi hi !! i am on the hunt for a new hair stylist, particularly for a cut!

i have curly hair that’s currently to my shoulders, grown out from a shaggy mullet, and desperately want to get it back to that. my former stylist unfortunately stopped practicing and i’ve been putting off finding a new one bc i loved her so much lol

i’d love a queer / queer friendly salon/stylist who does fun queer cuts, and who knows how to handle curly hair !! if anyone has recs PLEASE let me know!! willing to travel outside somerville, i have a car :)

thanks so much!!

Zola is up for adoption!

Hi everyone!

I recently started fostering this beautiful girl named Zola. She is half chocolate lab and half red nose pit, 2 years old, and such a loving sweet girl.

I started fostering her about 2 months ago and I’ve taught her some pretty great house skills. I am making this ad for her because her last potential adoption family application fell through and it really broke my heart. I just really want her to be loved as much as possible!

She is a fantastic guard dog and has really great recall. She is extremely playful and a fast learner. Some cons is that she is a bit WARY around men but she warms up eventually.she also loves shoes and just needs something to chew on/do during the day.
She still has vibrant puppy energy and her mind is like a sponge, easily trainable!

Here is the link to adopt her: https://www.adoptapet.com/pet/49684694-somerville-massachusetts-labrador-retriever-mix

Hey Ma! New noodle place dropped. Xian Cool Noodles - Porter Square Exchange

The sandwich boards drew me in....the Xian cold noodles were delicious! They opened Thursday. They also have Chinese-style burgers (pork or beef), dumplings and steamed buns. The owner quite loquacious. All the way at the back.

There are also signs for a bibimbap place coming soon to the Sapporo space.

Yippee!

We found Google Pixel Buds in their charging case in Nunziato Park this weekend. Got rained on, but seem to still be working.

DM if you lost them. Please include the exact model, and bring the device (phone?) you normally pair with them to identify.

The 7th Annual Camberville Zombie Pub Crawl

Post image
• Upvotes

On the 24th of October, the undead of Cambridge, Somerville, and beyond, will rise and swarm the streets in search of brains, booze, or both.....

The Camberville Zombie Pub Crawl is back from the dead for its seventh year! Throw on your best zombie attire and join the horde for an event that should not be missed.

The schedule is as follows:

-Portico Brewing: 5-6pm

-Remnant Satellite: 6-7pm

-The New Republik: 7-8:30pm

-An Sibin: 8:30-10pm

-The Druid/Trina's Starlite Lounge/Parlor Sports/Tall Order: 10-2am

Zombie Dance Party at Tall Order from 11-2 featuring DJ L’Duke

At the end of each time slot, we as a group will crawl, moan, amble, and groan our way to the next spot. Patron and Superlyte are our gracious sponsor this year, so keep an eye socket out for specials featuring them along the way, as well as some spooky food specials provided by our participating stops.

Helpful hints for new and seasoned zombies alike:

- Eat snacks! All participating bars serve food (even our newest addition Tall Order until 1:30) and eating food is a great way to survive all our stops and remember them the next day

-Bring valid ID! Checking ID's for people with a face full of makeup is hard enough already, so make sure your ID is valid and up to date

-Bring cash! We want to be as nice to our bartenders as possible, and not making them open and close 50 zombie tabs for one drink is a great start

-Be respectful! Having a large number of people flood your bar all at once can be stressful, so let's all try to make this as easy as possible for the establishments that have graciously accepted to be included in our crawl

Our first stop at Portico is family friendly, so bring the kiddos down to see some fun costumes and get your face painted; stops after there will be 21+. Spread the word, invite your friends, share this event, and let's kick off Halloween season right!

Follow our IG account as well @cambervillezombiepubcrawl

(Big shout out to our amazing flyer artist Joe; check out his other work at donotreadcomics.com)

Frost watch this weekend

Gardeners, beware! Saturday night could see a frost in some areas. Most of the city is fine -- the urban heat island effect is real! But if you live on the north facing slope of one of our many hills and have tender plants you want to continue for a few more weeks, take action.

What is that action? Well, more conscientious gardeners than I say even moderate insulation like a cloth will do wonders. Cover with a lightweight tarp or pile some leaves around or something similar.

Myself? I have a handful of pots in a sunbeaten, gods-forsaken corner with concrete and asphalt on three sides, so, by the time frost gets to my pots, I have abandoned them to the winter.

Enjoy the glorious weekend.

Be smart, be safe, be curious, be kind.

Sewist for clothing repair/re-creation

I have some damaged articles of clothing that I'd love to have cut up/reassembled/repurposed in some way - beyond the scope of standard tailoring. Any ideas of who in Somerville or beyond might do this kind of work?

This bakery is planned for the corner of Elm St and Cedar St near Porter Square. Looking through the windows, the interior and kitchen look pretty finished, and there’s a register on the counter. Things look promising for an opening soon!

Sarma was very disappointing

So I have been trying to go Sarma for a while and had a chance to take my girlfriend for her birthday and honestly it was quite disappointing. The veggie dishes being $22 for eggplant and for Sugar snap peas was not justified as they were loaded with over the top seasoning. The pork was a real meh being a specialty and one pasta dish tasted like canned tomatoes with no salt. My drink was $19 and tasted like thick prune juice.
The desert was supposed to be a homemade yogurt chocolate ice cream but it tasted like friendlies chocolate ice cream. Overall I spent $200 and it was the most meh experience.

My cat escaped out the window today while I was at work. Has a red collar with "GND" and my cell on it.

Please text/call if found!

He's super friendly and doesn't mind getting picked up

Should be around Lincoln park / Clark st Somerville

Update, found his collar near my house... So he's just an orange cat now :(

Update 2, realized I could look back on my security camera. Someone opened my window and took him 9pm the 14th 😢

What is your favorite restaurant deal in Somerville?

Post image

I’ll start with my current fav: Wednesdays only at the Mount Vernon in East Somerville. A packed lobster roll with fries for $16.99. This thing was so filled with lobster that you need to eat some lobster before you even pick it up. Hot tip: can ask for buttered.

Interested to hear what other neighbors have to share!

I made a website to find things to do in Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston!

I go to lots of events, but many of them are at Aeronaut, Trident Bookstore, Somerville Theater, Crystal Ballroom, The Rockwell, City Winery and other venues that primarily advertise through their own websites.

A few months ago I made this website that aggregates events from all of those places and more into a single spot so you can easily go out and find something fun to do:

https://www.wickedbostonevents.com/

Let me know what you think, I'm not making any money off of this and there are no ads on it, it just felt useful to share :)

Also - I posted this in a different forum and got ideas for features including the map and I'm going to work on a way to submit new events and locations to add, if you feel like anything is missing or could be better leave a comment - thanks!

Hey Team, comedy musician Matt Shore here. I’m very excited to do songs at you at The Middle East Upstairs to celebrate the release of my debut studio album.

You can grab tickets here: https://www.ticketweb.com/event/matt-shore-does-songs-at-middle-east-upstairs-tickets/14988423?pl=mideastclub&REFID=clientsitewp

IF YOU WANT TO AVOID THE FEE, get your ticket at the Middle East box office

A ticket also gets you into the karaoke after party when the show is over. Great place to make friends with other cool nerds.

See you there!
