Good man. Teach them to earn their way in life instead of giving them everything they want.

He's gonna have generational wealth at his disposal in few years, if I was this kid, I wouldn't fret over this
9
u/SuperLeverage 2h ago
If he doesn’t wise up, he’ll also be on the list of kids with generational wealth who blew it.
7
u/Darkheart001 2h ago
Even more important that he learns self discipline and the value of money now. If I was extremely wealthy I would delay my children having vast access to wealth until at least their mid 20s so they have an opportunity to achieve their own.

u/Educational-Seaweed5 2h ago
Still doesn’t work. At some point, they’re smart enough to know they’re set for life.
Even if then make them work a fast food job for a couple years, they know exactly what’s waiting for them down the road.
The only way a wealthy parent could hope to achieve a normal perspective for their kid is to basically never give them any money, kick them out at 13, and not ever allow them to benefit from the massively privileged social and economic standing.
5
u/edjumication 1h ago
Or just be a good parent and raise them to habe good values in spite of the wealth.

u/BigTruckTinyHome 2h ago
Not a given. Some rich people set up trusts, with minimum requirements to access funds. Some just straight up donate it or start a charity/ trust.
2
u/milk4all 2h ago
Ben Affleck seems kinda based as a real east coast working class boy but decades of being a super celebrity probably means that has just remained as his schtick, not necessarily or likely his current personality. Hes not actually from boston for the record, just to be clear
2
u/-Lionhart 1h ago
My Grandparents donated their $14M fortune.
It would be nice but none of the family needed it. We are all highly successful.
They wanted a plaque with their name on it at a charity. Apparently cost $10M. At the end of the day it was their money.
1
u/Educational-Seaweed5 2h ago
Which doesn’t change anything.
If you knew you had that, it changes everything. It’s not like you or me working our asses off with nothing but darkness at the end of the tunnel.
And these kids still exist in a whole different world of privilege from the get go, and have all the social connections to boot.
1
u/BigTruckTinyHome 1h ago
Just having a parents, home to go back to. When shit hits the fan can be considered privileged by perspective. Or being able to stay at home and save money, stay in school. Privilege doesn't exclude personal growth.

u/Count_de_Ville 1h ago edited 1h ago
You ever tried setting up a trust? You can make it so if your kid doesn't do a specific list of things, they don't get the money. The lawyers may try to talk you out of doing it, but you can do it.
Edit: grammar
1
u/Educational-Seaweed5 1h ago
Read what I wrote again and think about it more this time.
1
u/Count_de_Ville 1h ago edited 1h ago
You mistake disagreement for misunderstanding. Young people can be given crystal clear directions on how to make their lives happier and wealthier and they will ignore it wholesale until they're in their 50s. A trust that they cannot and may not ever be able to access isn't going to make their lives easier to live. It's not going to be a psychological safety net if the original trustees don't want it to be.
1
u/BigTruckTinyHome 1h ago
I know I did. But I never expected to make it to 40. Always struggled with the five year plan, because it was never an expectation, at least until I was in my 30s.

u/LostInMyADD 1h ago
But you arent him, and he is fretting over it and he doesnt comprehend having generational wealth "in a few years". He sees what he is given NOW and expects it because thats what he knows. His father is right to attempt to put him in his place, but it wont necessarily stick becaude of this one time he says "no".
1
u/Size---Queen 2h ago
Depends he could put the money in a trust and have rules attached to it or he could say fk it and donate it all.
1
u/Opteron170 1h ago
yes eventually the kingdom will be his. He just needs to shut out the noise which is hard at that age.

Shaq said the same to his kids. “I’m rich. You’re not. Work for it. “

Exactly on video also, they're just taking an old Shaq quote and slapping it on this fuck face

Similar to what I say to my kids.
I have no money and you're broke.
Works just as well I feel.

This was already posted as the not-AI version, which showed the kid is wearing $2k designer sweats. That ruined the feelies, so now it's been slopped to get rid of evidence.

No pair of shoes should be worth 2 months salary to anyone else.
$6k for Dior sneakers is robbery.
1
u/Krell356 1h ago
I approve of luxury brands if only because many of them actually pay their people properly and have no problem with the rich spending their money on workers. Its the same reason I dont mind watching casinos catering to rich people with way too much money. Sure most of it goes into some rich asshole's pocket, but when that casino is providing 500+ jobs that are actually paying well enough to not be borderline poverty... well its not a win, but at least its not a complete loss.

u/SpunNumeroUno 2h ago
Ya but who is the one that heard him say this line, just curious where it might have come from.
3
u/SourceMountain561 2h ago
6k dollars for snickers for a teen kid, who will probably leave them at school to get stolen, is ridiculous. Glad he said no. He would out grow them in a year anyway. Those shoes are worth more than the car I drive to work.

It’s a good point. Ben earned the money. A lot of wealthy people make their children earn their own money. Better to burst their bubble young than to allow them to fester as privileged, entitled people who have no drive.

Damn right, humble them early. Giving these kids everything they want is how we end up like pieces of shit like Elon Musk
5
u/DarkBladeMadriker 2h ago
Id probably work out a deal with my kid. If they REALLY want these shoes then they are gonna have to earn them. Couldnt even tell you how much firewood I had to chop and stack when I wanted a Playstation 2. Have him do community service or put in time with habitat for humanity. Theres ways. Course, he would have fire bombed any chance of any of that if he fired back with "we got the money".
5
u/Initial-Increase-601 1h ago
If my kid really wanted those shoes I'd consider it a great parenting opportunity to show them why spending $6000 on shoes is a moronically stupid idea. Doesn't matter if they love the shoes
2
u/VermicelliFederal976 2h ago
Uh what Dior pair of shoes costs six grand?
9
u/Size---Queen 2h ago
Because idiots buy it.
It's synthetic material and rubber it probably costs a few dollars to actually make.
Somethings value is what someone is willing to pay.
3
u/Educational-Seaweed5 2h ago
A lot of those “luxury” brands do.
You’ll see literal 100% cotton shirts for thousands of dollars. Like, literally T-shirts you can buy for $10 but “because Chanel” it’s $1,000.
It’s priced like that because vain morons actually buy it.
Rich people competitively spend. It’s a matter of status signaling to each other.
(People used to do this with iPhones.)
3
u/DSZDBA11 1h ago
People still do this with iPhones lol
1
u/Educational-Seaweed5 1h ago
They do, but it was significantly different earlier on in the lifecycle (before they were so widespread).
You can look up the research/surveys on how people used iPhones as a wealth indicator.
1
u/Scoopzyy 1h ago
Only people who can barely afford iphones think it’s some kind of flex lol
1
u/DSZDBA11 7m ago
I’m not disagreeing with you, but it’s funny how lots of iPhone users look at Android phones, you have to look at how a lot of younger people are with that shit, like having to have the newest iPhone immediately at launch. That’s what I’m referring to mostly, the empty flex of getting a new phone that is essentially identical to the one it replaced

u/EssayTraditional 2h ago
Scarcity and labeling; status minded fools overspend on simple designer clothes as a racket with the fashion industry.

If you’re wearing the away jersey over the black hoodie, you don’t need the CD sneakers.

Brutal, but hilariously fair, if true.
I don’t blame the kid for sounding spoiled, because that’s just in the nature of kids - some are better-raised, or more sensitive, sweet, and empathetic from the start, but( regardless, also many kids can just be pure Freudian-id for a while, and want what they want, including if they want it from their parents’ paycheck.
Although it may sound harsh, this is a great way by Affleck to bring his son back to the real-world & make sure he doesn’t become too spoiled. It’s really a good deed done for his son, as opposed to a bad one.
1
u/DurianDear6644 2h ago
That's valid I suppose. Have him earn his money. He's not entitled to it just bc he's dad's kid.

u/Educational-Seaweed5 2h ago
Yeah this is the part that some people in here are missing.
Even if he goes, “No, you can’t have that super expensive thing,” he still is the kid of a mega wealthy dude and living that exact lifestyle.
His whole perspective on life will be that way, with or without spending money.

Don’t shame the kid — f-ck off media. He’s a kid. This is likely all fake and just used to make the kid famous. Just stop. Leave the kid alone. No one cares.

He didn't asked to be born, its your decision in the first place and if you cant give him a life then shouldn't have reproduced
2
u/Impossible_Chain_822 1h ago
Give him a life? Denying your kiddo $6000 shoes isn’t depriving him of anything, it’s preventing your kid from growing up and being an entitled asshat.
1
u/Wild_Age_00 1h ago
No thats okay, but there are other ways you can teach them that. I was referring to the smartass line he thought he was giving to his son
