People got more sucked into social media. Young kid's brains rotted at an all time high. I think a lot of people developed mental health issues during the lockdown. And the rich got super rich while the middle class got more poor.

Too many people, young and old, aren’t cognitively developed enough to handle the advances in technology and social media. Too much information and sensationalized misinformation. Too much easily accessible confirmation bias. Too many institutions taking advantage of that for their own selfish benefits.

You know what's fucked up?
I 100% agree with you that loads of people developed mental health issues. Even if you don't go so far as to call the changes 'issues', it 100% changed people, virtually always in some negative fashion.
... And yet, bizarrely - I don't think I'd mind too badly if we had to do the staying at home thing all again. I'm not even sure I can explain why eloquently.

What happened is a bunch of us lost their careers and their jobs, and the rest of us were labeled disposable. We weren’t given enough support to get through it without hoops. We got to witness first hand how little America cares about us or how much of its bold words were empty.
That hollow feeling is wisdom friend. It is always a burden

u/MUCHO2000 1h ago
Totally agree.
With a lot of time on our hands we started to see how totally fucked we are as a society.
Propaganda works and social media algorithms turn it up to 11.
One thing that people don't talk about enough is a 2019 study showed 40% of Americans could not cover a $400 emergency expense using cash, savings, or a credit card paid off immediately. Then we had massive inflation and the vast majority did not get raises that kept up with inflation. By 2021 that figure had risen to 68% and now it's 63%.
That tension of not feeling secure as to your next rent or car payment combined with the social media algorithm feeding you propaganda is soul crushing.

They have stopped trying to sell us on the American dream. We are transitioning from late capitalism to technofeudalism.
The stock market is an AI bubble. If the AI fails it will wreck the economy. If it succeeds then they won’t need us anymore. Everyone sees this. No one is doing anything about it. We are careening into a dystopian nightmare.

there's something to the first half of your comment, cause it's how I've felt too. I think COVID, the George Floyd protests, Jan 6th, brief actual inflation and then permanent price gouging under the guise of inflation, everything percolating in the air of that time, it was a harsh lesson that the govt, or anyone for that matter, is not going to protect us. Not to sound dramatic, but imo a real feeling settled in that no one is coming to save us.

You know that feeling when you skipped class once, and you realize every classes now look skippable and there's no going back from it?
This is what happened. Everyone had all the time in the world, to fulfill themselves, to do their boddy, or even if it was boring, to realise how much time they were sacrifying at work. You can resume work now, but you know, now, how much you're giving up.
And there's no going back from it

u/NotDoneBeforeNow 2h ago
Excuse my ignorance, but how much time did people generally have off work in your country? I'm in NZ, and we had a couple of glorious lockdowns, one of 4 weeks and then another that varied based on location. But all in all things went on as per usual as we didn't have the presence of covid in the country. I don't have the same feeling as OP but I've seen it oft repeated. I do wonder if it's a measure of aging where a stage of life was kinda missed because of the isolation. As in, the feelings around life being busy and less exciting could be a normal measure of aging, but with the gap in between making it feel like a step and not a slope it triggers an odd feeling for people?

I think they meant remote work. No longer blowing several hours a day commuting and prepping for work. Being able to use the bathroom and make a sandwich without having managers attack you.
Then being shoved back into it because real estate sociopaths weren’t getting their dividends on overpriced office rentals anymore.
3
4
u/Vexed_Cactus41 2h ago
I haven’t noticed much difference since covid, but if there’s a collective explanation, it’s probably this. A lot of people got a year or so to work from home before getting clawed back the to the office. Perhaps that taste of the work-life balance made them realize how dissatisfied they are with commuting and being around annoying coworkers all day.

Nah. People are too much on devices these days. There are countless studies showing this even among Gen-Z/Gen-Alpha, that the usage of devices is impacting their ability to socialize, date, party, open up, relax etc. Everyone is addicted to their phone or their laptop or their tablet or their PC and nobody is socializing anymore. People don't just go out to dance or figure out ways not to be bored like they used to. It's hard for anyone really under 35 to understand this too, because they simply weren't alive and weren't doing things prior to this shift into permanent online living.

7
53
u/Fishbro-YouTube 5h ago
All these fools saying it's age. It's not.
It started in 2007/2008. During that time it was the best time to be alive, with the world going to shit, housing market crash, etc tons of bullshit in the real world pushing people to the internet that was uncensored, complete genuine no holds barr joy online. The internet was the escape from the bullshit. Shit like Halo, Gears, Call of Duty, Aqua barbie and J.B's baby and one time to annoy your friends even tho it always ends with y'all jammin to it in a unified cringe mocking it, and even the most depressing losers were happier with WoW on TBC and WOTLK. Spongebob movie still fresh in our minds. Love and joy everywhere.
Then it hits. The bail out of wallstreet. Too big to fail. Mad inflation part 1. Dreams start to shrink. Home ownership changing from a modest goal to a lifelong goal.
Then 2020, covid drops and the government commits to the largest inflation rate we've ever seen in history. Stock prices skyrocketed by 5 over the course of 2020 to 2024. Home ownership goes from a lifelong goal to multi-generational goal. GPUs reach 1k+. Even games go up from 60 to 70 and beyond. Consoles will hit 1k.
The people?
The people are clueless. They will demand for more butt fucking, spreading cheeks and lube alike, and then bitch, moan and complain about their incontinence later. They will blissfully demand more and more inflation through their desired government programs while ignoring the inevitable doom that is inflation.
Inflation is the tax that people don't see. It's the unseen blade which is the deadliest.

I was born in the age range you described and I also thought life was fine as the economy collapsed. It really speaks to folks inflated sense of self importance that they just can’t grasp they were young and dumb. It never gets talked about but occupy wall street sparked corporation’s paying psychologists and various other professionals to figure out how to break up unity and cohesion of people. One of the big studies was an Amazon study. I’m risking my account but it said pushing topics like lgbt and dei was key to stopping unions and unity among the working class. The next year nearly every major corporation celebrated pride and pushed that agenda.
To be clear, I’m not talking negatively about any group of people. I’m just explaining key events.

13
u/Xoorbie 2h ago
The Covid lockdowns ruined so many things. Many loved ones died alone in hospitals, unable to have visitors. Students who worked their way up to high school or college graduation didn’t get a graduation. Young kids could not be properly socialized. School kids missed out on a year of education. Weddings, birthdays, funerals, holidays, celebrations in general were suspended. Life-long family businesses were completely wiped out for good, often taking with them vibrant community hubs and places for gathering and connecting. Many things became virtual, contactless, and screen oriented. When things reopened, I think many people harbored a sense of profound grief and rage, both toward things outside of our control and toward things within the control of our governments (which were horrendously mismanaged to the point of ruining many people’s lives for good). So much was taken from us, and so much was lost, that it feels as though people are afraid to put their heart into things the way they did before Covid. Everything feels hollow, uncertain, impermanent, fake, and very difficult to trust. It also feels as though large companies have become nothing but unrelenting, shameless predators feeding on us in a way and on a scale that would have been unthinkable before 2020. The quality of almost everything has plummeted and prices have skyrocketed. I could go on and on… these are just some of my thoughts.

This. I remember the few months at the end of 2020 where it was basically an "employees market," with employees having more bargaining power for higher wages, work from home when possible, etc.
I work in a hospital as a physical therapist, and the therapy department along with other departments got a wage adjustment after pushing for it. I knew even then that there would be a catch... And there was, a month later the company increased productivity standards. As my mom had put it at the time, "The companies aren't going to let employees get away with having any power for long," and she was right. Especially since companies were allowed to price gouge even after the worst of COVID was over since, well, why bother bringing the prices back down? They rip off the consumers and rip off the employees. And here we are.
On a tangent, but I will add to the list of changes that... Well, the lockdowns were a lot and the response to the crisis was botched in many ways; however, the rapid rise in conspiracy theories that COVID wasn't real/wasn't as bad as people were saying honestly made me lose a lot of faith in humanity. And nothing that has happened since then has been enough to make me gain that faith back - quite the opposite, actually. (It's even worse being in America with our current federal administration...)

Let's be honest, we haven't had a moment to really deal with the raw horror of being afraid to breathe in public for a year before there was another horror, another war, another thing that feels like everything is falling apart, on top of basic day to day survival being so hard. The single most infuriating thing about American politics, is that when a Democrat is in charge, popular conversation talks about the mistakes that the Democratic Party is making and what they should be doing. But when a Republican is in charge, popular conversation blames the mistakes on "the Government", or talk about what all politicians should be doing, or act like the current problems were somehow inevitable. Its so endemic to American politics that even non-political people, when they talk about politics, repeat that style of language.
Back to this post. In 2008, the economy fell apart under the watch of George W Bush, after being strained by two unexpected and incredibly expensive wars in the middle east, which were financed by a federal reserve (that regularly announced that it was focused on lowering workers' average wages) and economic policies that inflated a bubble to hide the costs, which then popped in the housing market. Clearly, all politicians can't be trusted.
From 2009 to 2017, the Democratic Party attempted structural economic reform to fix the economy. They didn't do so fast enough, and though things did get better, people were understandably upset with Democrats for the slow rate of change.
In 2017, the Republican Party elected Donald Trump, who so grotesquely mishandled the Covid crisis, that we still haven't recovered nationally, as is evidenced by the plethora of posts in this post that claim that the world started falling apart under covid, and set off a chain of events that resulted in obscene inflation from which we still haven't recovered. The main discussion during this time period, was that the government cannot be trusted during a health crisis, and that individual people were acting irresponsibly.
Biden was elected in 2021, and the economy slowly improved for 4 years. He and all Democrats were rightfully criticized for being old, seeming feeble, and that his economic recovery felt similarly.
So in 2025 we elected Trump a second time. He spent his first year destabilizing the stock market for personal financial gain and directing government agencies to stop spending and fake their economic data, and surprised surprise by the end of the year we were in a quiet recession. He then spent 2026 starting another war in the middle east which has caused a major quality of life degradation resulting in posts like this.
But instead of saying, oh look, every time we elect a Republican, life gets fucking worse. People in this thread are blaming a dead gorilla, a virus, and vague psychological concepts.

I want to explain what happened.
Greed and profiteering at a global scale, out in the open, unregulated, unbound.
The stock market exploded, but the pricing doesn't align with any real metrics anymore.
A whole lot of wealth just drives the push because wealth has to be dumped somewhere. This is the market. This is asset purchases. This is company buy outs. This is institutionalizing everything, so everything around you and your life is built to take your money, all of it.
You have no one representing you. You have no one fighting for you.
Your very own government taxed you on a scale that exceeds anything in the history of anyone currently alive to the point that roughly HALF of the price increase today over the course of the last...oh...decade is very directly taxes. But these aren't good taxes. They're flat taxes massively burdening the poorest in the country.
We also went to war...again.
We also won't properly support victims of wars from others.
We don't protect people. We ARE the bad people.
AI took over everything, literally everything: software, hardware, information, filtering access, and curating what you experience.
We are failing our kids in school and their futures.
Wages have stagnated although inflation has skyrocketed meaning we are poorer than we ever have been, in some metrics poorer than during the great depression depending on which aspects of life you evaluate.
Fewer can afford a home.
Fewer can afford college.
Healthcare costs are skyrocketing.
Fewer have retirement savings.
Many people alive today will likely work until they die.
We are systematically defunding social programs which by design is cheaper on society than not having them at all.
We are pushing the national debt into the stratosphere with no single effort to stall or reverse it. This will be a debt all future people inheret.
The rich are getting VASTLY richer and buying everything.
What is bought is now rented, subscriptioned, or leased back to the masses at exorbitant rates, and often with interest.
We are protecting the corrupt, the criminals, the pedophiles.
There is a massive push for fascism and Christian nationalism as well as a strong return of racism and very public abuse and killings of innocent people.
Mmm, did I miss anything?
So yeah, it's going super.

During this time, the powerful have become more powerful and the powerless more powerless. I believe that humanity will only begin to understand in the coming generations where this phase has led us all. One factor that made everything considerably worse was that the feeling of unfairness and unequal treatment led to the stupid ones becoming so much louder - A situation created and promoted by those in power. Nationalists and conspiracy theorists have been on the rise ever since. None of this has stopped. It will only get worse.

The split came when SCOTUS gave the 2000 election to Bush. We lost the climate battle when Gore was defeated, then 9/11, then Fox news and the lies that led to the iraq war. Obama was a pushback, but the backlash to that gave us DJT and white supremacy out in the open. DJT and Fox are directly responsible for the unreality of the US response to Covid, which is what has led, in part, to what the OP is describing.

It's the reality that you realized half, if not more, of the planet doesn't give a fuck about you or anyone but themselves and can't wait for you to fuck off and die.

It's the hell window/surveillance device we carry around everywhere. God only knows what else it's doing. For everyone saying it's just people turnign into boomers, the big difference is that kids used to be able to read. Adults could expect each other to act civil outdoors. There's always assholes everywhere but the entitled way people act in the US is insane.

It's because you don't remember before 9/11, the Cold War, Vietnam, The Cuban Missile Crisis, WWII, WWI, and on and on....
It changed each time, you are just remembering this one because it was so recent and everyone with internet access remembers it.

Go live your life and get a hobby you’d be surprised how quickly you won’t feel this way.

You got older lmao.
This is the normal progression of age for most people. Time starts to slip once you are an adult with an adult life that's just the same thing day in and out.
Covid if anything temporarily slowed down time. So perhaps it's the contrast that is hitting you uncs so hard.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, people have become increasingly isolated and dependent on social media. Social behavior has changed drastically; our sense of humanity is fading, while egoism continues to rise. Although access to knowledge has become easier and more independent of location, the younger generation, in particular, no longer shows any interest in general education or similar pursuits—focusing instead solely on self-presentation online, chasing clicks, and engaging with social media. Humans were not made for the internet; in the past, fools remained largely confined to their local environments, unable to spread their stupidity very far. Today, however, such individuals connect online and reinforce one another’s distorted worldviews. It’s a pity...

The world is getting ready to hatch... Capitalism crossed a threshold, which means fascism soon crossed a threshold in its wake, class consciousness and the inevitable sickness that is ultra-wealthy people became harder to ignore, a decade worth of escalating transphobia advertising (news) started to pay real political dividends at the cost of blood, the genocide in Gaza became harder to call anything else while top Israeli officials like Ben Gavir say crazy Nazi type things on social media, one shot two kills t-shirts didn't even get anyone fired much less prosecuted, the war in the Ukraine dragged on, Republicans maintained majority in every branch of government, doing what conservatism does (maintaining and deepening hierarchy and roles), social media, AI, mass-surveillance, autonomous killing machines, autonomous hacker AI agents, masked men in unmarked cars killing people in the street legally or illegally doesn't much matter, and we kept putting more and more of lower and lower forms of cruelty-infused food into our bodies. When we've had enough of justifying unnecessary violence, we'll hatch as a species and spread joy across the planet where we spread suffering yesterday, or we'll keep finding ways to rationalize violence, wars, child abuse, eating animals, domestic violence, and the time for hatching will pass... so we rot in the egg, and life ends before it really began.

Curious if this is how everyone across the globe feels or if it’s just an American sentiment?

In addition to what others have said, we lost over a million people just in the USA. Almost everyone you meet has lot at least one (often more) people they care about. We haven’t experienced a mass death event like that in decades.

2017 to early 2020 were the greatest times of my life by a wide margin. 2020 was like a light switch.
I'm living a nice life now, but it will never be that fun and carefree.

I feel like we all realized we are actually sheep. Most people will go along with just about anything regardless of how ridiculous it is. That backbone that we all thought we had turned out to be a fantasy. Our government could start killing people in mass tomorrow and most of us would just go to work anyway.

It’s all by design. Listen to what we’re being told from social media to news networks to ads and more. We’re told to be divided, we’re told we’re tired, we’re told to be angry, we’re told we don’t feel good. Are we surprised by what we’re being told and who is behind all those ads and articles telling us this? We’re being worn down on purpose.

I literally didn’t stop during Covid, I’m jealous of people that did 😅 the only long term impact it has had on my life is that I still mask in busy places, public transport, etc and I don’t get sick all the time like I used to. 🤷🏻♂️ my social life did take a hit but it was petering out anyway when I look back on it.
Now I’m just doomed to supporting all the brain damaged idiots that keep getting sick all the time and dumber by the minute.

America has always had the reputation abroad as the selfish, self-gratifying country and the last decade has been all about individuals and corporations proving that right and the rest of us feeling too disappointed and too powerless to do anything about it

The short term research on long COVID and brain fog is shocking. The one I'm tracking hasn't published but I know one of the researcheers. It's possible the whole species dropped 12-20 iq points.
