Yeah, I was going to say it’s ironic the symbol of plastic surgery in the 90s is the symbol of “natural” in the 2020s.
254
u/Bebebaubles 21h ago
Not really. Some of us get older and wiser and know that stuff no longer matters. It’s more sad to see someone in old age chasing youth so desperately like Demi Moore. She was even in a horror movie about chasing youth and is still like this.

Honestly, watching The Substance had the exact opposite effect it was supposed to have on me... Like, I understood the message it was trying to say and it made me self-reflect on some things I do that aren't great for my body just because I want to chase the youthful feeling, but it also made me SOOO much more self conscious about my appearance for such a long time after watching it because I really have noticed negative affects of aging on how people treat me and I think the movie highlighting those things impacted me the most.

u/cannellinibeeans 18h ago
I like to think about what a privilege it is to get to witness myself age. I don’t want to take that away from myself out of vanity.
20
u/New_Complaint8722 15h ago
I had a NDE at 30 that totally shifted my perspective on aging. Every wrinkle and gray hair is like a victory lap once you understand that aging is a privilege, not a given
7
u/b-stardust 14h ago
Agree. Almost died a few years ago myself, and I welcome the wrinkles and gray hairs.

In a future full of people with body mods, aging naturally will be rare. I very much prefer to age naturally. Maybe I'll get better knees so I can move and do things but I'll never change my face.

u/No_Implement_6927 19h ago
With age you should move forward, not stay in the same place. You should realise doing the same thing you were doing when you were decades younger isn’t good for you anymore. People mistreating her in the movie were clearly depicted in a negative light. You should accept times change, we change and mature and we should be able to accept the changes. Chasing something you don’t anymore have and that there’s 0 chance of you possessing is very destructive to your body and mind. I think you and Demi should both watch the movie again.
8
u/s0ulether 19h ago
Yeah you should move forward as you age but the rhetoric that you can’t do stuff at an old age is tiring.
If you don’t stop being active at a certain age then you’ll still be able to do a lot. Of course you should accept that you’re growing older but you shouldn’t have to accept that you’re gonna be helpless by 70 unless you have a really bad injury.TL;DR: you can grow old physically(your face and stuff) but you don’t have to mentally and physically(your mobility and agility)
Stop making older people think they’re supposed to be frail.→ More replies (1)39

This! I find it hilarious that people are glazing her for being all natural when she was part of the very Hollywood culture that normalised cosmetic surgery. Mind you, people were getting work done long before her, but it was largely kept hush hush. Hollywood made cosmetic enhancements increasingly mainstream, and now people are celebrating her as the face of natural beauty. The irony is hard to miss.

Anyone with eyebrows like a fucking Romulan has had a facelift. I'm not going to judge. If they're happy, its no one's business but theirs. But I need them to just accept that when their eyebrows are on their forehead, no one is going to believe that they're just trying a new skin cream.

Yeah almost like a woman "aging gracefully'" is a woman who was lucky enought that her procedures look good and natural and she was not botched, cause god forbid a woman nearing 60 has some wrinkles! While a guy is allowed to have a face etched with deep lines and still is considered attractive. If anything it shows a double standard for "aging gracefully"
30
u/TheSpanxxx 18h ago
I've been (finally) watching Severance and it dawned on me last night that i really really really like Patricia Arquette in this show. And in a close up shot the other night it dawned on me that the fact I could see her forehead and eye wrinkles as she expressed herself as a 50+ year old woman made her feel so much more real.
I'm sure there's a high chance she had some work done at some point but she still looks like an aged version of herself. She doesn't look like someone who said "give me the new Hollywood special"
11
u/Puzzleheaded-Sky3141 15h ago
Iirc when she signed on for Boyhood it was a 12 year shooting schedule and Richard Linklater insisted she avoid any procedures during the process. He felt strongly that her character wouldn't have work done. He said it was a big ask. It paid off.
In some pictures, I think she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen

Once upon a time, I worked as a writer for a very small publication, and I spoke to a plastic surgeon as part of my reporting, and he was mentioning the difference between plastic surgery in the Middle East and in the West. Having now lived in both, I don't think he was 100% right, but he did tell me about the distinction between the attitude of "I want no lines and that nose" and "I want to look good for my age, like still recognizably my age but good for 50/60/70 etc". Pamela Anderson might be in the second category.

There are plenty of us that feel that way. You keep your fillers and nerve freezing agents to yourself, thank you very much.
Since you used “Betty,” recall how fond everyone was of Betty White, and though she did have cosmetic surgery, it was notoriously minimal in comparison to most aged celebrities.
There’s no money in pushing a lack of cosmetic procedure on social media, so we lurk in the background, but we appreciate a natural look.

Did you ever hear about that device they created in Germany, where you can turn a screw to give yourself an instant facelift? It was very popular, but people were abusing it, turning it every other day. One day, a patient went to see her plastic surgeon about it because she had developed huge bags under her eyes.
“Doctor!” She cried, “Why do I have these massive bags under my eyes?”
The doctor examined her carefully, sighed and explained “Ma’am, those aren’t bags; they’re your breasts, and if you don’t stop turning that damn screw, pretty soon you are going to have a beard.”

Helen Mirren her self said she thought her movie days was over when she got old, but because UK didnt have the same beauty standards as Hollywood, suddenly there was demand for people looking old and well most of those actors and actresses was British. Not just celebs. What about real people? What about politicians? When I see a 60+ y.o. politician with perfectly brown hair I automatically think that they're dishonest or disingenuous regardless of who's team they're on. I think more highly of anyone who embraces their gray hair or baldness.

That said, aging is heavily dependent on genes and as well as life style (so let’s say someone struggled with hardship and anxiety, the effects of aging might be more pronounced). So we don’t need to appreciate the celebrities who age nicely only, but also everyone. If we want to encourage people to reduce plastic surgery, we need to lower our standards for what is considered beautiful while aging.
4
4
u/tippytoesmcjee 15h ago edited 11h ago
They are just aging. Not really like fine wine. And that's ok. It is graceful, however, to accept that age has changed your body and not go the surgical route to fight against that; unlike a lot of people.
