I'm not a rocket scientist, but this seems illegal.

1.9k

u/NetworkEcstatic 1d ago

Its illegal because its not clearly labeled.

Slap a fat label saying g fire extinguisher is right here its fine.

But just a random silver door with no discernible reason. Yea, thats illegal.

652

u/GreenGhoblin 1d ago

But labels eww that would make the place look untidy. Who needs safety when you have style?

309

u/NicholasWildeRails 1d ago

Apple stores have the style of a dental office

69

u/Ill_Technician3936 1d ago

I got a great dentist office then lmao there's artwork made by people in the city all over it.

Yes the labels would have to be silver in a subtly different shade from the column, and the text color subtly different from the label so it's unobtrusive, the way some web designers put light gray text on white background.

5

u/Headpuncher 21h ago

Apple inspired web devs never put light grey on white, they put light grey on a slightly darker grey.

Also make the font size 8px.

What is more likely ...

The flagship NYC retail store of one of the most valuable companies of the world is doing blatantly illegal shit that only Redditors are smart enough to see

Or

This image is fake engagement bait for Redditors who cannot resist a good "Apple bad" circlejerk

10

u/erizzluh 23h ago

i just assumed there are other publicly placed fire extinguishers and this one is like an extra one for managers or something.

3

u/peelen 16h ago

Yeah, I assumed the same: there are enough legally halal, visible fire extinguishers, and those are just bonus ones that all staff know about.

No idea how New York operates, but over here in barely functioning Texas we get inspections by the fire marshal. They specifically check to make sure your fire extinguishers are stored in a code compliant way. My workplace got dinged on our last inspection because one of our fire extinguishers was in the right place, but the hook it was hanging off of wasn't up to code. We had to get a work order in to replace our fire extinguisher hook with one that met the regulations.

This is Texas, not exactly known for its focus on public services and willingness to enact regulation. I doubt New York is more lax.

2

u/beast_c_a_t 12h ago

fire codes are usually enforced by the local fire authorities who have a pretty good reason to enforce it as every fire that have to fight is a major risk to their lives

What sucks is you calling this out is also engagement, just like me responding to you. So win-win for the poster. But I do it to when I see them with a slimmer of hope people will notice and move on without engaging. It's everywhere when you pay attention. Video streamers similarly commonly say something unusual, maybe out of context, or simply something controversial. It's all to hook people in a manipulative way.

4

u/CitizenofBarnum 1d ago

i Extinguisher

1

u/MiniMaelk04 23h ago

Everybody knows about the special iExtinguisher compartment in every Apple device. Most easily reached by piercing directly through your device battery with a sharp object, and you will become extinguished.

(for legal reasons the above is sarcasm)

7

u/Eternal663 21h ago

It's not illegal to own/hide a fire extinguisher.

It's illegal for there to not be a labled/marked/visible one in public areas (depending on the code of where you live, the exact spec's and regulations may differ so i won't give concrete numbers).

Nobody is gonna fine you just because you have one there. They will fine you if you don't have one avalible and visible.

2

u/Horrific_Necktie 17h ago

Not true. If it is intended to be used, it must be conspicuous. (Local code apotions may vary, but below are NFPA standards)

13.6.3.1.1.4.1 Individual signage or placards shall be provided for each extinguisher in the grouping and shall be placed immediately above or adjacent to each installed extinguisher. [10:6.1.1.4.1]

13.6.3.1.1.4.2 Where extinguishers are installed in cabinets, the required signage or placard shall be permitted to be placed on the face of the cabinet door provided it does not interfere with cabinet visibility, conspicuity, or fire resistance rating. [10:6.1.1.4.2]

13.6.3.1.3 Placement. 13.6.3.1.3.1 Fire extinguishers shall be conspicuously located where they are readily accessible and immediately available in the event of fire. [10:6.1.3.1]

13.6.3.1.3.2 Fire extinguishers shall be located along normal paths of travel, including exits from areas. [10:6.1.3.2]

I don't think a label would fly in Canada. We can't just keep fire extinguishers stored away in little closets around the building. The entire point is having quick access to temporary fire suppression.

2

u/Fluffcake 22h ago edited 22h ago

Doesn't have to be. There is nothing stopping you from hiding additional fire extinguishers everywhere like a squirrel. Building can already have sufficient fire suppression measures to be code compliant without it.

73

u/thecactusman17 1d ago

This is almost certainly against multiple state and federal building codes.

1

u/Throwawaysquared4 23h ago

Does every single store you’ve been to have a visible fire extinguisher?

20

u/hates_stupid_people 23h ago

Of course they haven't, but per the law in most places they must have clearly visisble signage if enclosed or hidden.

In the US it would be OSHA, NFPA and ADA requirements. Which likely are not being followed in this case.

→ More replies (11)

15

u/thecactusman17 23h ago

Yes. It's a mandatory OSHA requirement.

They might have the extinguisher in the back rooms out of the public area, but even there it's fully visible for inspection and retrieval by anyone who needs it. Or if it's covered (such as if it's in an area where it might be exposed to corrosive elements or debris that could damage it), there's a big sticker or other indicator that clearly states that there is a fire extinguisher present at that location.

3

u/Good-Roll427 21h ago

Opening the emergency exit requires signing into Apple ID

42

u/Nero_2001 1d ago

Is this even legal. Doesn't a fire extinguisher need to be clearly visable incase something happens?

33

u/EmotionalDeadZone 22h ago

OSHA CFR 1910.157(c)(1): employers must mount, locate, and identify portable fire extinguishers so they are “readily accessible to employees without subjecting the employees to possible injury.”

The Fire Marshall applies a simple test, could someone who is not familiar with your facility find the fire extinguisher(s) easily and in a stressful situation?

If the answer is no, then it is not a legal placement.

Otherwise, it’s fine.

There are also distance requirements for signage, how many extinguishers you need and what type depending on types of liquids and types of hazard, etc… but that’s not the question here.

9

u/Tokenvoice 19h ago

Why would a employee not be familiar with the facility? The law is that employees need to know where the extinguishers are but the marshall tests for randos?

13

u/Alladas 19h ago

Because not every employee works at every store. When you work retail which this is.... Especially if there is more of the same stores owned by the same company.... If one is short staffed where do you think they get the staffing..... There is also teams at big stores like Walmarts that go store to store for refreshes and inventory. There's also district managers and corporate workers who very likely don't go to that store more than once a year.

Lots of employees that aren't there every day or are in multiple stores a day.

5

u/Datboy000 19h ago

The signs on an extinguisher are very reflective and slightly glow. This is because when there is a lot of smoke it is hard to see. When an extinguisher is useful is in clear air, to just before you cant see your hands extended.

Simple test for this that we had to do on the boat is go to your bedroom. Blindfold yourself and have someone position you in the room then spin you around 3 times. See how long it takes for you to get outside safely. You are familiar eith your home, but in a safe and controlled environment you can change that familiarity to be against you

4

u/MisterXnumberidk 18h ago

Because it does not matter who grabs the fire extinguisher.

If one is needed, you want the closest person, whoever they are, to be able to find one asap.

Fire does not wait in line for customer service and employees aren't firefighters.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ExoticMangoz 21h ago

That regulation is contradicted by the test.

→ More replies (5)

9

u/Fine-Froyo6219 16h ago

Illegal per NFPA 10 unless there is clear identification of the extinguisher cabinet out of the photo. Even still, almost assuredly illegal and the fire marshal wouldn't like this. They're required to be conspicious not INconspicuous.

5

u/omnimodofuckedup 14h ago

My best guess is this is not a mandatory extinguisher and they already got the mandatory ones covered.

10

u/admfrmhll 23h ago

Not really, there is a reason that they are all painted in camouflage patterns to match locations paint, instead of red or something for more visibility.

3

u/Occidentally20 22h ago

Where I live there are almost no regulations for health and safety at all - you can cook some food in your kitchen right now, put a table on the side of the motorway and sell it. No health inspections, no ingredients labels, nothing. You'll see people changing gas canisters while smoking, 5 people and a baby all one one motorcycle with no helmets and people building skyscrapers with no harnesses, helmets or shoes.

Even here fire extinguishers are mandated to be visible, sensibly placed, labeled in multiple languages and inspected by the fire department regularly.

We yearn for such a camouflage design!

u/WHATYEAHOK 22h ago

11

u/Coal_Morgan 1d ago

It's not showing the entire pillar. Possibly there is a flag above pointing down at it.

I can't see an inspector not checking that the extinguishers weren't up to code.

Fire exits, fire alarms and fire suppression are usually priority 1 for most inspectors and most places stay closed if it's not up to fire code.

So I'm betting that it's a cropped photo for a reason.

26

u/Size---Queen 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think they are legally required to have one as well as not blocked exists.

Not labeling that it's there feels illegal.

12

u/Kyvoh 1d ago

Or hear me out, they have the legal minimum correctly displayed and labeled, it just happens the legal requirement doesn't cover per room coverage. So that storage, break rooms, bathrooms, etc. all have it, but not the public side. The the display room could legally have this in effect(though I'm not a fir Marshall)

5

u/TheRealSmolt 1d ago

I thought that too, but in my extremely cursory research it seemed like all extinguishers, public facing or not, need signage.

4

u/MurderSeal 1d ago

You dont NEED signage if its in an open visible area, but if its around a wall, or inside something like this absolutely signage is needed.

In an emergency the closest fire extinguishers should be deployed, even by non-trained people even if just to bring it over and ask for a trained individual to take control.

Not having signage will also confuse shoppers if they are told by the scene command to fetch one, and given directions. "Look for a panel on one of those poles" is not anywhere good enough compared to "go to that area and look for one" when it will be very visible.

And this

13

u/Horizontalgewerbe 23h ago

I remember that saga. The fanboys where vehemently defending it was a great design, where it clearly was form over function gone bad.

I'm still not fully convinced it wasn't a dare mocking the users that could see no downside to anything Apple did. "I bet you Jim, we could make a mouse with a charging port on the freaking bottom and they'd still buy it!"

3

u/GenerallySalty 23h ago

Yep. Right up there with "I bet we could sell a computer where the monitor doesn't come with its own stand, and the stand is an aluminum triangle that's an additional $700 and they'd still buy it!". And that was like 10+ years ago - you could build a good computer at the time for less than the aluminum stand for a Mac's monitor.

3

u/Horizontalgewerbe 23h ago

It also turned me off to the few Apple fanboys I know in real life. As in, nice people and all, but I no longer talk tech with them since the mouse thing. Of course you can find its silly design 'no problem' or like in their case even 'nice', but acting like it's a design that's above all forms of criticism because of 'Apple' rubbed me the wrong way.

2

u/spookynutz 19h ago

Is this level of criticism actually warranted, though? This is the second time I've seen this fire extinguisher at the top of /r/all. It's a fire extinguisher.

Logitech has been making variations on this design for almost 20 years. I've never heard anyone complain you couldn't use it while docked, or even cared enough about mice to criticize one. The same with power tools, handheld vacuums, phone headsets, etc. The obsessive outrage culture fixated on that mouse's charging port (and now this fire extinguisher) is just weird. There are products that have resulted in actual death that have gotten less flack.

Yeah that store would be shut down in Australia until they fixed it.
The Fire department are more powerful than the Tax Office.
They can prevent any cafe, restaurant, hotel, bar or office from opening their doors if it's not up to code.
I've had experience with a boutique hotel with a rooftop bar that were prevented from opening our doors. A simple thing like a pot plant in front of an exit door or insufficient exit signs are just some examples.

We wound up almost a week behind schedule because he was nitpicking absolutely EVERYTHING he could possibly find before OKing the systems and signing off on the permits.

There's only two rules you need to follow when dealing with inspectors:

  1. Have your ducks in a row so everything goes smoothly.

"FUN" STORY: I just went to the Apple Park store to pick up a water bottle for someone. He's an Apple nerd and really wanted two as collectibles....I live close and am a nice guy.

Wtf, Apple. They had water bottles on display, but had to ask to get them from the back. They didn't come in a box or anything; just naked. Then I wander around for a few minutes figuring out there's no where to checkout, so I have to ask again how the fuck to pay for these things. She points me to another dude who has a portable payment device. He is actively helping people with products so I have to wait awkwardly for him to finish so I can finally leave that hellscape. Instead of a quick 2 minute in and out, it was 10+ minutes of frustration.

They don't want the aesthetic of registers and what not, so they fuck the whole customer experience. Hate that company.

2

u/isonotlikethat 1d ago

I use a lot of apple products. This is actually one of my biggest complaints with Apple. Their stores prioritize helping customers choose what iphone they (might) want to purchase than people like me who just want to walk in, buy something, and leave. I'm just imagining a couple of firefighters surveying the charred ruins of an Apple store and one of them says, "Yeah, but the place looked REALLY cool.  You shoulda seen it, man.  SOOOS cool."

u/Relevant-Bit-7394 1d ago

Putting the it in a metal cover is smart

u/FisherDwarf 1d ago

Next we'll hide the emergency exists

5

u/Boffleslop 15h ago

Wait till they get rid of the fire extinguisher port.

3

u/copperblood 1d ago

Shhhhh think different, OP! 🤣

3

u/achisling 1d ago

Imagine trying to unlock that door with face id while the accessory wall is engulfed in flames.

3

u/Ristar87 1d ago

I'm pretty sure it's also illegal. the fire code states your extinguishers must be in clear sight and every so many feet in the case of a stripmall or something

3

u/Starwood3 1d ago

Imagine panicking during a fire and playing hide and seek with the extinguisher

3

u/anonumus_idiot 1d ago

Not to mention its a metal door.

3

u/MancDude1979 22h ago

Yeah but its Apple so that metal will have absolutely no structural integrity

3

u/lewisiarediviva 1d ago

I assume you can only open the door by sticking a wire in a tiny pinhole

3

u/spawndoorsupervisor 23h ago

Why are like 99% of the comments just the same thing over and over?

3

u/hazzwright 21h ago

Bots or morons. Take your pick. I'm only this far down because I'm looking for a single comment asking where this picture is from and if it's even real.

Zero critical thinking skills going on.

u/locoattack1 8h ago

"Clearly the largest company in the world's flagship store in the largest city in the country is breaking the law and nobody noticed except for me when I saw this poorly cropped reposted photo that is absolutely not missing any context."

3

u/tedecristal 23h ago

Like Tesla hiding the door opening handles... https://youtube.com/shorts/yrI2S9Unw1o?si=779X5DVmugXpdzOM

3

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 23h ago

What, they're not locked behind a paywall? Amazing.

3

u/Kaasbek69 21h ago

Apple is always form over function, so this fits.

3

u/zeb_linux 20h ago

As stupid as hiding car door handles.

3

u/catchasingcars 19h ago

What do you expect from a company that put charging port at the bottom of the mouse?

6

u/Oops_All_Bans 1d ago

Apple is all flash, no substance.

2

u/New_Function_6407 1d ago

Hopefully it lights up or pops open when the fire alarm is pulled.

2

u/AMonitorDarkly 1d ago

I guess on the one hand, an extinguisher isn’t going to do shit against the type of fire that’s most likely to occur there.

2

u/bawnchie 1d ago

If you have an android you can't see it

2

u/Brad23212 1d ago

It’s fine as long as you have a sign that’s shows where it is

2

u/Wyremills 1d ago

You're supposed to use Siri to find out where the nearest fire extinguisher is

2

u/mushymunchkin3230 1d ago

They probably hid the fire extinguisher cos it’s red and clashes with the rest of the store’s drab metal color scheme by being too lively

2

u/characterfan123 23h ago

I have seen video of Walmart employees trying to evacuate customers when a display catches on fire. They yell at a customer who simply takes a fire extinguisher from where it hangs on a ceiling post and puts the fire out.

You know, the posts with a big yellow FIRE EXTINGUISHER sign on them

16

u/Conscious-Loss-2709 23h ago

If I worked at wallmart I'd yell at people too if they prevented it burning down

3

u/praterboi 23h ago

If I worked at Wallmart I'd yell at people.

2

u/Happy-Telephone9483 22h ago

If I worked at people I'd yell at Walmart.

2

u/JetNeoArmstrongCanon 22h ago

If I was Walmart I would yell at people and spontaneously combust

I'd think Osha would say something.

2

u/RileyGainesHorseBaby 23h ago

Perfect metaphor for apple design.

2

u/1Harvey2Trent3Temple 22h ago

They won't be able to do this over the pond, as safety legalisation requires fire extinguishers to be easily available and visible.

Any fire extinguishers weighing 4kg or less must be mounted in such a way that the handle is 1.5m from the ground.

Fire extinguishers weighing more than 4kg must be mounted where the handle is 1m from the ground surface.

The extinguisher must be easy to reach in an emergency.

If the extinguisher is loose in any way, it poses a safety risk. Make sure it is securely fixed wherever it is mounted.

According to fire extinguisher regulations, your fire extinguisher should be close to the fire escape route.

It must also be clearly visible from most vantage points, especially from fire escape routes.

If a building has multiple floors, then the various extinguishers much be placed in the same locations on every floor in order to maintain consistency.

1 of many bad ideas from Apple

2

u/nopunchespulled 18h ago

If there is not a clearly labeled sign that the extinguisher is in there, it's against code

2

u/mahlernameless 10h ago

Took me longer than it should have but I did find pictures with this panel on their google maps listing. I expected to see a red fire-extinguisher placard higher up the pole but didn't see anything. Interestingly there is similar panel above this closer to the ceiling.

2

u/RedditUsername_Mine 6h ago

Most of Apple’s ideas are hilariously bad ideas

4

u/civil_beast 1d ago

iRetard

4

u/smoothie_criminals 1d ago

You cannot hide them. That is against fire code.

And when there is a fire with smoke filling the room, try finding that. If Apple wants to be innovative, have a cool firefighting robot always at the ready

2

u/AoiSekai01 1d ago

Pretty sure that's illegal unless there's a label indicating a fire extinguisher is kept inside

Sounds like typical apple.

Used ipod. Coming from windows and nokia their itunes interface was annoying without simple drag and drop. Never again. Heard they implemented drag and drop after a while. But still scared of buying iphone and finding some ridiculous design or aesthetic choice that will be infuriating every time I interact with it.

1

u/herefornothing2 1d ago

Something tells me the employees know where it is.

1

u/Ok_Transition_4003 1d ago

It's not like there is anything in the store that can spontaneously combust

1

u/pinecity21 1d ago

ITRAGEDY

1

u/Vulpes_99 1d ago

Hiding a fire extinguisher is a hilariously bad idea

Not only that, but calling it an "incredible detail" as if it were a good idea is a hilariously example of "Brand's Brainless Cult", too 😂

1

u/HowlingWhiskey 1d ago

Why does a fire extinguisher need a capsule?

1

u/plumsofcheeze 1d ago

Thats just an optional extra that you have to pay to unlock for fire

1

u/bl00by 1d ago

There's no way that this is legal, right?

1

u/DogEmbarrassed8888 1d ago

Ouhh this item ment to ensure my safety in case of emergency is unsightly.. put it in a wall compartment like a video game secret, surely everyone and their mother can see the cut out on the gray piller in the gray smoke that the fire causes.

1

u/JoshyRB 1d ago

Well imagine how annoying a fire alarm would be when your products are always just that fire 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/bpluribusunum 1d ago

...then we'll all burn to death in a sexy, sexy fire

  • Steve Jobs, probably

1

u/Striking_Rest_8849 23h ago

And also in a building with no windows

1

u/North-Fun7648 23h ago

AI will take care of the fire. Don't worry
