Question How in the world do I find a husband as a non-Punjabi Sikh girl?

I’m 27F from New York City and I’d love more than anything to finally find someone who shares the same faith, get married and build a life together. The issue is in not Punjabi or even Indian. Most Sikhs are Punjabi and like 99% of Punjabis only want to marry another Punjabi or at the very least another Indian. I feel like it’s impossible for me to find someone. I’ve tried meeting people through Hinge and Tinder. I set the filter to only Sikhs and made it clear what I’m looking for. The matches I did get were just Punjabi Sikh guys my age only looking for quick sex, or they’re trying to get a green card.

I thought that the ones with full kesh who tie dastar would be more respectful and serious but they are the worst ones!! I’ve received unsolicited nude pics, asked for nude pics, pressured to go to their homes and have sex. I am not looking for that. I feel like Sikh guys my age won’t take me seriously because I’m not Punjabi. My family is not Sikh nor do they even have knowledge of Sikhi. I’m not even close with them and they don’t believe in arranged marriages so I can’t have them set me up with anyone.

It genuinely feels like accepting Sikhi means I will never get married.

Question Could the way we treat the guru granth sahib be considered idoltary??

This question has been on my mind for a long time . with people killing each other due to beadbi, treating it like a real person , carrying it on cushions and many more. These things just make me question if we remember what guru nanak ji taught which was to question arbitration rutiuals and tradition. I know Sikhi condemns idoltary. i am just a teen and asking this just to know more. Pls enlighten me.

Discussion Inspiration for Kaurs. Highlighting a star Sikh female boxer

This post is to share information and a highlight video of a young Sikh female pro boxer named Simranjit Kaur who has promoted boxing to young Sikhs and all of Punjab. She is still not too well known to Sikhs despite her contribution and she deserves to be recognized.

Simranjit has already put together a great career in boxing and has now turned pro in America. She has won 6 gold medals in international boxing tournaments, defeated many star boxers, and recently became the first Sikh and Punjabi woman to make it to the Olympics in boxing.

Her success has inspired many Kaurs to join boxing in Punjab and now she is working to do the same in America.

The video features some highlights from her career. What do you think about this and what are your expectations for her pro career?

Discussion Why is death so hard to accept when we all know it’s coming?

We all know that death is part of life, but accepting it can still be difficult. Maybe accepting that death is inevitable doesn’t mean caring less about life, it can remind us to value and protect the life we have while we’re here.

Those Sikhs of the Guru, who serve the Guru, are the most blessed beings.

Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to them; He is forever and ever a sacrifice. ||10||

The Lord Himself is pleased with the Gurmukhs, the fellowship of the companions.

I wash their feet, and drink in the dust of their feet, dissolved in the wash water. ||12||

Those who eat betel nuts and betel leaf and smoke intoxicants,

but do not contemplate the Lord, Har, Har - the Messenger of Death will seize them and take them away. ||13||

The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who contemplate the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,

And keep Him enshrined in their hearts. The Guru's Sikhs are the Guru's Beloveds. ||14||

The Name of the Lord is a treasure, known only to the few Gurmukhs.

O Nanak, those who meet with the True Guru, enjoy peace and pleasure. ||15||

The True Guru is called the Giver; in His Mercy, He grants His Grace.

The Guru's tongue recites Words of Ambrosial Nectar; He is adorned with the Lord's Name.

Those Sikhs who hear and obey the Guru - all their desires depart. ||18||

Some speak of the Lord's Path; tell me, how can I walk on it?

O Lord, Har, Har, Your Name is my supplies; I will take it with me and set out. ||19||

Those Gurmukhs who worship and adore the Lord, are wealthy and very wise.

I am forever a sacrifice to the True Guru; I am absorbed in the Words of the Guru's Teachings. ||20||

You are the Master, my Lord and Master; You are my Ruler and King.

If it is pleasing to Your Will, then I worship and serve You; You are the treasure of virtue. ||21||

The Lord Himself is absolute; He is The One and Only; but He Himself is also manifested in many forms.

Whatever pleases Him, O Nanak, that alone is good. ||22||2||

Question Why is Sikhism true?

So im not very knowledgeable on all the religions and just started college right now and have been thinking about what is the point of life and coming from a Sikh background I want to understand why Sikhism is true and why you follow it. And also why I’m here, what’s the point of everything, purpose, where did we come from and where are we going when we die, etc all those types of questions. I also have been looking into other religions as well and its a lot to take in. There’s so much knowledge and it’s hard to understand what the truth is and what I should follow. I have people of all faiths in my life pulling me in their direction and they all have some things that are appealing and some which are less appealing but my concern is what’s actually true not what looks and feels nice.

When I was younger I was very practicing like family was into and still is I to Sikhism heavy and took me to Sikh camps and made me learn a lot and they took Amrit. I spent lots of nights at gurdwaras or at sangat. But as I got older I started seeing friends of other faiths and started talking to them and questioning what the truth is and I realize I don’t know and there are so many religions and I only follow mine because my parents. now that I’m older i want to explore and learn about all faiths and see which makes the most sense and is from god. I know they all contain some truth but that means some also contains falsehood as well so I want to find the one that is without error basically like fully true.

I also cut my hair and started living differently because I don’t have a reason to keep hair. Because I don’t believe in the Guru Granth Sahib. I started doing other stuff like eating meat etc but not things that I think are bad. Like I don’t party club or drink smoke etc. And it’s not that I don’t believe in it (Sikhism) either. It’s just that I have no reason to believe it or not believe it. Maybe everyone goes through a time in their life where they questions everything like this or maybe it’s just me.

There’s a lot I want to say but in the end, I’m just confused. Like what’s the truth? Is there even a truth? I believe in god and think god must have sent us some sort of guidance but I don’t know what that is. I feel young and dumb. I look around and everyone says they have an answer and I feel like nothing makes sense. All I’m at right now is that there has to be a creator as it’s the most logical explanation to reality. And that’s after studying atheism for a long time.

Question Getting married to sikh family

I’m 32F, Hindu from Kerala marrying to 32M,Sikh guy from Punjab. We are getting married in both kerala and Punjab style.
The more I get to know about the sikh style wedding I’m feeling excited as well as overwhelmed. Especially with the gifting part.
I see they buy lots of clothes and jewellery for me. I wasn’t aware that guy’s family gift this much gold to bride in any culture.
I am curious is this something common in Punjabi sikh culture ? If yes, can somebody how actually the bride family compensate back for all these gifts?

My boyfriend says that since I’m not from this culture I dont have to gift back like their way. I feel a bit of shame to accept gifts without giving back. So please help me how do you guys do?

Discussion Non practicing sikh

Hi, I’m 23M, I grew up in Europe and my parents aren’t very practicing but they go to the gurdwara, and I go too for the festivals. It’s been years since I last went, even though the gurdwara is a 10-minute walk from my place.

There were periods where, on my own without anyone asking me to, I recited Sri Japji Sahib every morning before going to class, and even though I haven’t done it in years, I still have lots of pauris memorized.

The problem is that I can’t go all-in, and I’m stuck between two chairs. I have rigid rules that make no sense to a non-Sikh, I don’t drink even though I could, my dad and my brother do, even my cousins, or going to parties, etc. But on the other hand, I don’t pray, I don’t do anything at all.

Deep down I believe in God, there are things that happened to me that I don’t think were coincidences. For example, one time I was looking for a company, I couldn’t find anything and I was very sad because it was supposed to fund my studies, then an Amritdhari guy stops me, he asks me why I’m sad, he tells me don’t worry, two pieces of good news are going to come. Maybe a week later, I had exactly two interviews, and both accepted me. Unfortunately, I thought he was a scammer at first, because he said he would pray for me but in exchange he asked me to give him money to buy food.

Has anyone been through this ? I constantly feel guilty. I thought it would go away with time, but it’s getting worse. Is it worthless to pray even when sinning ?

Thank you for your guidance.

Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl, Second House, Ashtpadheeyaa:

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

They read scriptures, and contemplate the Vedas; they practice the inner cleansing techniques of Yoga, and control of the breath.

But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. ||1||

O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord; I have performed these rituals so many times.

I have collapsed, exhausted, at the Door of my Lord Master; I pray that He may grant me a discerning intellect. ||Pause||

One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest.

He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. ||2||

His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off;

but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. ||3||

He may give gifts of all sorts - gold, women, horses and elephants.

He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord's Door. ||4||

He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals.

He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord by these devices. ||5||

He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these.

He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord. ||6||

He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands.

He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. ||7||

Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions.

Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. ||8||

Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours.

The Destroyer of the pains of the poor has become merciful to me, and this mind is imbued with the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||Second Pause||1||3||

Kirtan Tips to stay on taal while playing kirtan

I’ve mostly been playing harmonium solo and learning shabads through YouTube videos, but I’ve recently started learning to play with tabla. I’m struggling to stay in taal and internalize the rhythm.

I’ve tried clapping along and closing my eyes to focus on the beats, but I sometimes confuse beat 1 with beat 5. I currently use a tabla app with a counter to help me keep track, but I want to learn how to recognize the sam (first beat) naturally, especially when playing with someone in person.

How do you develop an internal sense of taal, and how can you distinguish beat 1 from beat 5 when listening to or playing alongside a tabla player?

Discussion If the Divine is beyond gender, why were the primary messengers of sikhism throughout history male?

If God is all powerful and beyond gender, why did He only pick men as messengers? Either He couldn’t override the patriarchy, or He just preferred dudes. Looks a lot more like humans writing their own stories than some genderless divine plan.
