Built a mushroom-hunting app for myself. Somehow got 2,500+ downloads in the first week

I have a problem. My family has been returning to the same mushroom spots for 20 years, but put me in a new forest and suddenly every tree looks the same.

This year I started exploring new forests in western Ukraine and realized that finding mushrooms is only half the adventure. The other half is remembering where the hell you found them and where you parked your car.

So, naturally, instead of using a notebook like a normal person, I built an entire iPhone app.

It's called Lisovychok (roughly "Little Forest Spirit"). You can save mushroom spots, record routes, mark your car, and keep a journal of your finds. Offline maps included, because forests aren't famous for their mobile coverage.

No accounts, no public maps. Your secret spots stay on your phone.

I launched it on October 6, shared it on Ukrainian Threads, and somehow got 2,500+ downloads in the first week.

Turns out I'm not the only person who can't find the same tree twice.

Now I'm curious whether mushroom hunters outside Ukraine would find it useful too.

It's free on iPhone. Would love your feedback!

Screencap 2.0 - native activity memory tracker for you and your agents

A few months ago I shared Screencap here, and now I'm super happy to announce that version 2.0 is a full rewrite in Swift:)

It runs in the background on under 1% of one CPU core and about 30 MB of memory, smartly takes a screenshot when your screen settles, reads it with on-device OCR, and categorizes it with ZDR System-One decision models to help you (and your agents via MCP!) to better understand past activities. And it's also very easy to play with:

Main window

Popup

Download & check sources: https://github.com/yahorbarkouski/screencap

Happy to listen to any feedback, especially from users who tried it before

I did it.

I never thought i'd actually get my first customer.

But i did, not one but 4 which is more than i ever thought, not because i didn't believe in myself but it was always a dream i chased ever since I was a kid, I made a product, I marketed it, and I got sales, all on my own with no help.

Grateful for everything.

And I'd like to say that you can do it too, just keep on pushing.

I built a free leaderboard where side projects are ranked by real clicks

Hi all. I built BuildShipper, a simple leaderboard for indie projects. You list your project for free and it gets ranked by how many people actually click through to it.

It is early and not public-wide yet, so I am looking for the first projects to list. If you have something shipped, I would love to have it on there: https://buildshipper.com

Honest feedback on the idea or the site is very welcome too.

Thank you 😄

I built WonderRoll, an iPhone camera app that brings back the wait for a roll of film

I'm the developer of WonderRoll, a film and instant camera app for iPhone.

The idea is to bring back a little of the anticipation of film: choosing a roll, being more deliberate with each frame, and seeing what you captured later. I wanted the process to matter as much as the final look.

There are two ways to use it:

- Film mode: finite rolls and delayed reveals, for a trip or a walk you want to remember as a collection.

- Instant mode: paper-style photos for small, everyday moments.

The thought behind it is simple: some memories take time. Shoot now. Discover later.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6788199897

I'd love feedback on the idea: would waiting to see your photos make you more thoughtful about what you shoot, or would it just get in the way?

I built a tool to check your website for AI readiness

Hello fellow side project builders! 👋

I'm a solo founder with a number of small side projects and I often wonder what I could do to improve my websites for better LLM visibility.

So naturally, I rolled up my sleeves and built yet another tool. 😂

I read everything I could find about what makes an LLM quote a website source, and combined all the different theories into one solid list of signals; domain age, content freshness, citations, etc.

Then I built a SaaS product that verifies them. CitableReport currently checks 40 different elements of websites, to ensure they are in the best readiness to be mentioned by AI.

You can run a free check now, which will give you some valuable insights and an overall score. If you'd like, you can pay to unlock to the whole report.

Would love any feedback from you all. What are your first impressions, etc? I'd be happy to return the favour with a product or website of yours, if you like. Thanks in advance!

i got tired of juggling five tools to run ai locally, so i built locally uncensored. it just passed 180k downloads

i’m a solo dev and locally uncensored is my app. about half a year ago i got annoyed that running ai on my own machine meant a pile of separate tools, a terminal and a whole evening of wiring nodes before i saw a single picture. so i started building one desktop app for all of it.

here’s where it is now:

-chat with local models. one installer, and it suggests a first model that fits your machine, so you never open a terminal. if you already use ollama or lm studio, it works with those too

-images and video on your own gpu. it installs and runs comfyui in the background, you pick a model and type a prompt instead of wiring nodes

-train a character on your own card and reuse it in your pictures

-voice mode, where you talk to the model and it answers out loud, all on your machine (english only, beta)

-runs on windows, linux and, since last week, macs with apple silicon (beta)

it’s free and open source (agpl), you don’t need an account for anything local, and it’s at 180,000 downloads now.

then i noticed how many of those people don’t have the hardware. an 8 gb card handles images and small video models but not the big ones, and a laptop without a gpu runs very little. so i built a hosted mode where the same kind of open, uncensored models run on our gpus, the ones the big chat apps won’t give you. in the desktop app it’s one switch between local and cloud, and the same account works in a browser on machines without the app. that part is paid with credit packs, no subscription, and it’s what keeps the project going. everything local stays free.

some things i learned along the way: most support questions were never bugs, they were people asking why their card is too small. so the app now tells you what fits your machine before you download 20 gb. people also care a lot more about it working on the first try than about having the newest model. and saying the limits plainly (“beta”, “tested on one mac”) earned me more trust than any new feature.

if you want to know anything about building it, the stack (tauri, rust, react) or running models on a weak card, ask away.

Wordio - A web based word game with 2 ways to play!

Long time programmer, web developer, whatever we want to call it these days. I've also always been a big Scrabble player.

Nearly 10 years ago I started building an infinite Scrabble-style board game. Built the engine on my laptop in the evenings, got it fully working and playable... and then just let it sit. For almost a decade.

With tools like Codex and Claude getting so good lately, I finally decided to dust it off and give it a proper overhaul.

The result is Wordio. In the process of rebuilding it, I ended up splitting it into two different games:

Wordio Classic - The original idea. A never-ending multiplayer board that just keeps growing as people play.

Wordio Rush - Head-to-head matches with 5 timed rounds to see who can come up with the highest scoring words.

So basically two ways to play. Take your time or play under pressure.

Anyway, pretty cool to finally have this thing out in the wild after all these years. Would love some constructive feedback from fellow developers (or word game fans).

I got my first paying customer yesterday. A week ago I celebrated a fake one.

I built Incipite, a small tool that stamps your files on the Bitcoin blockchain so you can prove you had them first. Photos, scripts, songs, whatever you make. It’s been live since May and about 20 people had tried the free version. Zero paid.

Last Friday my Discord pinged me “pay_per_use” on two new deposits. I was already writing this post in my head. Then I opened Stripe to look at the money. Nothing. My own notification was calling “has credits” a payment, and the credits were free ones I had given him myself. So I fixed the label and felt pretty dumb.

Yesterday the real one came. Same guy actually. He had signed up a week before, used his 3 free certifications and the 3 extra I sent him, then subscribed at $6.99 a month. And stamped 6 more files the same day.

What surprised me is that he’s the only one who came back. The 19 others stamped one or two files and left with credits unused. I spent months trying to find people, and the one who paid just had a lot of things to protect.

It’s $6.99, I know. But this time I checked it in Stripe three times aha

Did anyone else get a fake first customer before the real one?

I built a 10-second "am I overpaying on rent?" check for Canada

Rent in Canada is a guessing game. Listings tell you what landlords want, CMHC tells you what everyone pays including people who've been in the same place since 2009, and neither tells you if your rent is fair.

So I made amioverpaying.fyi. You pick your neighbourhood, unit size and the year you moved in, enter your rent, and it compares you with the right benchmark: recent asking rents if you moved in lately, CMHC averages if you've been there longer. You get a shareable card with your result. It also does mortgages, comparing your rate with today's best published rates.

It's anonymous, with no signup. It's give-to-get, so your entry makes the comparison better for the next person. It covers 40 cities and 300+ neighbourhoods right now.

I'd love feedback on two things: does the result feel fair, and would you actually share the card?

I built a keyword rank tracker for App Store & Google Play because I was tired of guessing my ASO

Thumbnail
storank.app
6 Upvotes

Hey all, indie dev from Türkiye here.

I kept shipping apps and had no idea which keywords they actually showed up for. Most ASO tools were built for big studios and priced like it, so I built my own: StoRank.

What it does:

  • Type your app’s name, it finds the keywords you rank for and your competitors
  • Measures your rank daily on both App Store and Google Play, in the countries you pick
  • Every Monday it writes a short list of what to change (title, subtitle, keyword field)

There’s a free rank checker, no signup: https://storank.app/en/keyword-rank-checker?ref=reddit-sideproject

Stack, for the curious: Python (FastAPI) + SQLite on a single Hetzner box, vanilla JS, Paddle for billing.

I’d really like feedback: what’s confusing, what’s missing, what would make you actually use it?

built a local-first Markdown editor for macOS where every note stays a plain .md file (open source, MIT)

I’m a product designer, and for a while now I’ve been building Tagdown, a notes editor for macOS. The core idea: every note is an ordinary Markdown file in a folder on your disk. No account, no proprietary database. Git, iCloud or Syncthing just work, because it’s just files.

On top of Markdown it adds:

  • callouts, tabs, KaTeX math and Mermaid diagrams, all as plain text
  • #tags, [[wikilinks]] with backlinks, and links to single blocks that you can embed in other notes
  • live queries like <query tag:project show:tasks /> that collect tasks from all your notes, or show notes as an editable table of their properties
  • a journal, version history, slides, HTML/PDF export, and publishing notes as a static website
  • a CLI and an MCP server, so Claude or other assistants can search and write your notes

It’s built with Tauri, Rust (Tantivy for search) and TypeScript, and it’s MIT licensed.

Honest state: it’s early. There’s no download yet, so you’ll have to build it from source (Node + Rust). There are rough edges, and I’d rather hear about them now than later.

Two things I’d really like your opinion on:

  1. Does the syntax feel natural, or is it too much on top of Markdown?
  2. What would stop you from switching from your current notes app?

I zone out in lectures constantly, so I built a tool that catches what I miss

I have dysgraphia and dyspraxia, and I zone out in lectures all the time.

Handwriting is slow and tiring for me, and typing fast enough to keep up isn't much better. By the time I've got one point down, I've missed the next two. Then my focus drifts, and I come back to a page of half-finished sentences.

I started building NoteMate while I was still a student, and I've carried on since graduating and becoming a software engineer.

It records the lecture and turns it into a summary you can go back to later, at your own pace. So zoning out doesn't mean losing the content.

How it started

Funnily enough, I first built it for meeting notes. Retention was bad, I had one paying user, and most people went back to Otter.

The people who stuck around were students. That clicked straight away, because I was one, and it was exactly what I needed in my own lectures. So I narrowed everything down to them.

Where it is now

- 400+ students using it
- About 40 new signups a week
- Won funding from the University of Sheffield!
- Still just me

What I'd love feedback on

  1. If you're neurodivergent, what makes study tools easy or hard for you to stick with?
  2. Does the landing page make sense in 5 seconds?
  3. Anything that feels off or untrustworthy?

Happy to answer anything about the build!

My ADHD brain gets lost in desktop clutter, so I built my own organizer

My brain is foggy from all the mess on the desktop :(
I'm developing multiple projects simultaneously, some documents also need my attention - everything just becomes a burden to which I don't want to look at.

I've tried Stardock Fences, iTop Easy Desktop and many others - in my experience it was either a subscription, a crashing process or a lack of minimalism and customization.

I solved it for myself and wanted to share it with you guys. Now my new hobbies have their own space on desktop and when I need it - I just focus on a dedicated fence.

I'm preparing for an Early Access release (a few weeks until I can release). Would this help you, or what would stop you from using it? And do you use anything now to organize your desktop/messy brain?

I spent the last few weeks building a free database app that lets AI agents look at your data without breaking anything. Just launched it!

Hey everyone! Today I launched my side project, Rowkery. It's a free, open-source database app for Mac that works with Postgres and SQLite.

Why I built it: I use AI assistants like Claude a lot while coding, and I kept wanting to ask them things about my real data, like "why is this order stuck?" But giving an AI full access to a production database is scary. One bad query and something's gone. So I built a tool where the AI can look but can't touch.

What it does:

  • The AI only sees the tables you choose to share, and only for as long as you allow.
  • It can only read data, with limits so it can't overload your database.
  • Sensitive columns like emails get hidden behind placeholders.
  • If the AI wants to change something, you see exactly what will change and nothing happens until you press Commit.

It's also a fast, keyboard-friendly database app even if you never use AI with it.

Where it's at: v0.1 alpha, released today. It's Mac only and supports Postgres and SQLite for now. It isn't signed by Apple yet, so the first launch needs "Open Anyway." It's free and open source under Apache-2.0, built with Rust and Tauri.

What I'd love from you: try it out, tell me what's confusing, and let me know which database I should support next. A GitHub star also helps a lot this early on. 🐧

Check it out here!

I built a car logbook app that keeps your 12-week tax logbook while you drive

I've built Just Drive, an app that keeps a car logbook for you while you drive. It's made for Australia's 12-week tax logbook, but the tracking works anywhere, so you don't need to be Australian to test it.
How it works: put your phone in your pocket and drive. Each trip is recorded on its own: start and end, distance, times and addresses. Once a day you swipe through your trips: right for work, left for private. That's it.
What I need: the hard part of an app like this is not missing trips, so I need people who drive most days to:
install it and drive as normal for at least 2 weeks
tell me if a trip was missed, split in two, or started in the wrong place
tell me anything that confused you
iPhone: the beta is open through TestFlight: https://cediim8.github.io/just-drive-site/#beta
Android: Google needs 12 testers for 14 days in a row before release. Leave the email you use on Google Play and I'll send the test link when it opens: https://forms.gle/9p6mm6yf4ZdyNA3R9
Privacy: no account and no analytics. Your trips stay on your phone and in your own backup. Nothing is sent to me.
Cost: free for testers.
Happy to answer any questions here.

We’re reviving a park map I built with my brother years ago

Thumbnail
travelermap.net
4 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m Oskar, and a few years ago my brother Kacper and I built TravelerMap.net, an interactive map for discovering parks. He later got busy with his other project, Veloplanner, and TravelerMap sat untouched for quite a while.

Now I’ve teamed up with Lukas, and we’re working on it every day. It’s 100% free to use and includes national parks worldwide, plus other parks in the US, Canada, the UK, and Poland.

We’re currently focusing on the US. We’ve added campground and parking locations and are rewriting park descriptions to make them more practical. Our next big feature is a trip planner for choosing parks, finding nearby stops, and saving itineraries.

It feels good to bring an old project back to life. I’d love your honest feedback on the map, especially what’s confusing or missing. Would you use something like this to plan a park trip?

I finger pointed AI until it did what was in my brain.

Now that the obvious is out of the way..

I made this for the people who's flow state gets interrupted by switching tabs.

People who work with others remotely that wish they could work together live.

People with followers who wish there was a way to give them all a 1-on-1 style experience/lesson.

Teams who hate each-other's communication skills. (Share a canvas, see each-others progress, no waiting on emails, texts, slacks..)

People learning how to manage teams of AI agents.

Marketing teams that are planning campaigns for the quarter.

Agentic Engineers, Vibecoders, and Developers with multiple projects and no way to manage them all visually in one place.

My vision is that people can take this and use the SDK to make their own integrations or enhance the ones that are in there already.

There's a marketplace for agents and modules, all free to use, all welcome community contributors.

There's draw your own racetrack games, asteroid, office suite, lead finder powered by tavily and claude, compatable with ollama, etc etc etc. I think I've made 50 so far.

There's literally too much for me to put in this post. If any of the above sounds cool, give it a pull, docker it up and let me hear your thoughts.

Please forgive the 14 minute video attached, I can assure you if i tried editing it, it would be 10x worse.

Skip to :43 to save 43 seconds of your life that would otherwise be spent watching me click a button that didn't work.

If someone does like it, and is better at videos, by all means be my guest.

TL;DR

oogalieboogalie/CensaiOS is the repo. Thanks for looking.

I built an open-source Gmail cleanup app that runs AI locally on a Mac

I wanted help sorting through Gmail without sending my email content to cloud AI services, so I built a local app for Apple Silicon Macs. It groups similar emails and uses local models to recommend Keep, Cleanup, or Needs Review. You can inspect the results before choosing what to move to Trash—nothing is automatically deleted. It uses Laya for classification, Qwen through Ollama for further review, and optionally Winnow as an alternative classifier. It’s free, open source, and still a public alpha. Setup is from source and requires local model downloads and your own Google Desktop OAuth client. You can start with a read-only test of up to 10 emails. The README walks through setup, and there’s an AGENTS.md guide if you want a coding agent to help. GitHub: https://github.com/karan19/LocalFirstGmailIntelligence Sharing it for anyone who wants to run it, experiment, or look through the code. The recommendations can be wrong, so it’s built around reviewing and confirming actions yourself.
