Memorandum on breeder posts and potential bans
I've deleted several posts recently and below, I'm posting what I wrote in another thread. As I mentioned, certain discussions can lead to legal ramifications and now it seems there's an active lawsuit involving these reddit posts.
Because reddit encourages a level of anonymity, it's very difficult for users to fact check claims (on either side) so its value to the community becomes very difficult to justify. Several members of the community have asked mods to remove these discussions entirely.
That's not to such information shouldn't be out there nor is it a decision about which side of the discussion is "right", the problem is reddit isn't the right place for it because of its limitations. Users are free to direct others to other resources discussing experiences and the other information about concerns from a previous post still apply.
Please note that future discussions of this nature may now result in a ban. We don't have to have a rule that says don't do things that draw other people into lawsuits.
In general, random internet people aren't able to verify either side of this argument without a lot of digging that I'm not able to do, and I suspect the same of other mods and fellow reddit users.
If the thread goes down another path, it can lead to serious legal issues so the only real way to get anywhere is to record people's names in the event of a lawsuit but disclosing such personal information directly violates reddit's terms, so we can't really go down that road. Therefore, there's a limit how much reddit dialogue can do in these situations.
Appropriate bodies of oversight to investigate these matters include associations/registries for particular breeders. If a breeder is not able to retain certification by a major registry, that is usually a reason for pause. If a breeder is a member, use the registry to make a formal complaint. If the breeder is in your region, you may be able to also lodge a complaint with a governing local animal welfare body. In both cases (and not on reddit) you'll be expected to disclose your name to the appropriate authorities in case the other party is wronged and wishes to sue.
Although it's nice to have a repository of information that gives candid information about breeders to be weary of, I don't know if we don't have the infrastructure for the consequences of that or how much we're allowed to push reddit into that sort of legal area.

Meet Sasha!
We were finally able to bring our Sasha home last week, and he is just the most wonderful thing! Vocal, affectionate…and insane! He has adjusted quickly to our home and befriended his three K9 brothers! This is my husbands first time owning a cat and he is in total awe of him!

One of my favourite pics of Torsten and Rolf
Torsten was quite new to the family and didn't really care about the rules (1. no cats on the dining table - later revised and deleted, and 2) do NOT play with the chandelier). Rolf knew what was going on.

Reputable catteries in WA
Hi hi! I’m looking into bringing a Siberian baby into our home! My fiancée grew up with a Siberian as he is allergic to most animals but wasn’t to him (rip cooper) I’m not planning on bringing one home any time soon but want to get ahead on my research. Any recommendations on reputable catteries in Washington? Thank you for any suggestions! 💕

We bring our kitten, Gojo, home in 10 days
Legal name: With The Sole Exception of Satoru Gojo Of Course
I seriously can't wait! I have never taken a decision lightly in my LIFE (I'm cursed this way), and after months of preparation and research (and finding a breeder that we liked working with), my boyfriend and I can not be more excited that we will finally have our baby Siberian!

Kitten at Night
My husband and I just got our first ever cat. We have always had dogs so I'm new to everything cat. We got a handsome baby boy at 12 weeks and he's such a sweet, loving boy. He's now 4 months old and has free reign of the house mostly. We started with him sleeping in our bed and he was very good and stayed put, but recently hes been wondering and trying to play with us and our dog Honey. Honey is a 7 year old pit mix and is very sweet and patient but does not like Milo batting his paws at 2am to play. Honey has always slept in our room.
My question is do I shut my bedroom at night? He has slept elsewhere several times (we think on our couch on a blanket) and will come to say good morning at 7am. Recently he's been trying to come back to the room but he's disrupting everyones sleep. When I shut him out, he will meow a lot and I feel so bad! What should I do? He has two cat towers downstairs for him to sleep in and his food and water and litter is downstairs.

Mischa new obsession: The Gabbeh rug I was gifted last weekend
It’s so funny to see how she really has these obsessions. And her latest one if the Gabbeh rug my dad gifted me last weekend. She will spend all day sleeping on it 😂🥹. It’s in the entryway and before that she would never go there.

Meet my new Siberian kittens!
These are my new Sib kittens, Casper and Coral. They’re littermates and are now about 4 1/2 months old. I’ve had them for a month and a half and I love them so much (even if they are professional mischief makers).
So glad I decided to get two. They settled in so fast and seeing them playing and cuddling together is adorable.

New kitten!
Bringing home a new kitten when I move out here soon. I dont know much about him or the breed since he was a split second decision since a friend's dad was trying to ship the litter off.
Ive been wanting a cat of my own for 12+ years now and now that im finally in a good spot to move out here we are.
He appears to be struggling to exist properly in the photo but he is my son.
I welcome any advice or name suggestions(though I may have one in mind).

My 2-year-old neutered cat has been meowing constantly since we moved 4 months ago. How can I help him?
About 4 months ago, I moved to another city. Before the move, we lived in a two-bedroom apartment, and now we live in a one-bedroom apartment. Since the move, he has been meowing constantly throughout the day and sometimes at night, especially when he sees that I'm awake. I'm sure the apartment has his smell because I have collected fur everywhere.
He has food and fresh water, and I change his water every morning. I've taken him to the vet, and they said he's healthy. He is neutered and vaccinated.
The confusing part is that he seems to want my attention, but I don't understand what kind of attention he wants because he isn't very interested when I try to play with him. He mostly prefers to watch rather than play and after 10-15 minutes when I'm done with his passive behaviour and walking away he starting to meowing again. Before moving he was very playful
At night, he usually becomes much more interested in toys and starts to play and make noise. Usually I'm hiding toys into drawers but he can find something like a hair tie and play with it.
I can't spend all day playing with him, I need to work. I have tried spraying water when he meows but for him it's like a funny game to run away.
He is driving me crazy and I don't know what to do. Help

desperately need help
sorry in advance because this is LONG
my Siberian is almost 3 (her birthday is in 2 weeks) and she has been a complete menace for nearly the entire time I’ve had her, and I got her as a kitten. I literally do not know what to do anymore, I have been dealing with her issues for years and I have considered rehoming her twice now. I’m hoping other Siberian owners can help.
more background and timeline:
- I grew up with a Siberian (kitten to age 16, he is still alive!) and this is my first time owning one as an adult, so I am a little familiar with the breed.
- I got her as a kitten. She is from Ukraine, the breeder still shows cats and gave me extensive documentation of her breeding lineage. She was also spayed there.
- She has been, as I would describe, anxious and unable to self soothe, since I got her. She has also been “diagnosed” twice with chronic vocalization. she is extremely energetic and difficult--she has escaped my apartment 4 times and climbed onto the roof of a neighbor, and I've had to climbed into the roof to rescue her each time. She meows maybe up to 2000 times per day, whether or not I ignore her.
- She has been medicated for anxiety (prozac
5mg
- ) for over a year. It helped A LOT in the beginning but I think its effects have plateaued. At its peak efficacy, she was able to sleep through the night in bed with me and it was perfect. The first vet I asked about medication said I wanted to “drug my cat” but I’m glad I found a different vet because she was so much better on it.
- Prozac can be constipating, so I put her on a prescription dry food. She often struggles to poop and I have to “help her” (bring her to the litter box to remind her she needs to poop). Once she’s there she poops no problem.
- I went to a cat behaviorist (Mikel Maria Delgado, she had a book that I read and she was much cheaper than the local SPCA that the vet recommended, which is $600 for just the intake appointment). She recommended some basic things like ignoring her meowing to stop reinforcing the feedback loop, letting her knock all my things over or moving them so she can’t get to them, keeping her awake during the day so she sleeps at night, and clicker training. Ignoring the meowing only occasionally works—she will meow for 3+ hours (I simply won’t stick around long enough to endure more). I live in a junior 1 bedroom attic apartment, I do not have enough room to stuff all my belongings out of sight for her, and because the ceilings are short, she can reach things on the short shelves. Clicker training sort of worked, but it was hard to keep up for every single behavior all throughout the day when I was working from home. I did try really hard to keep her awake during the day and tire her out so she would sleep at night, and using the most activity packed days as a gauge (a walk in the park, climbing trees--always leashed), that didn't make any difference.
as it stands right now, this is how a usual day goes:
I am unemployed and have been for a while since I was laid off. I am at home a lot. She is either begging for attention all day or asleep. I put her on a leash and let her sit on the deck while I work (she is always within my eyesight and tethered to the door). When she asks for attention, she often is annoyed by being held and doesn’t want to play, or gets bored after a couple of minutes. Often when I put her out on the deck because she meows to go out, she then meows and comes right back in. It seems like she just needs me to be involved in every activity in a very direct and engaged way.
night time: Some time several months ago she decided she doesn’t want her wet food (1x daily) at 10am, but at 7am, then 5am, then 4am, and now around 2-3am. Now she just wakes up at this time, sometimes eats the wet food, sometimes doesn’t, but just wanders around meowing incessantly, pacing around the apartment, walking on top of my head, and knocking things over. It’s not really “zoomies” and she doesn’t want to play with toys. This usually goes on for 1-3 hours every night. My vet recommended putting her in another room, and the only “room” I have is the bathroom. I tried putting her in the bathroom last night after she knocked numerous things over at 4am and she meowed until 7am. I ended up leaving and sleeping at my partner’s apartment. I have been sleeping there most nights because I can only sleep for about 5 hours a night now if I stay at my apartment.
other observations: she does better when my partner is around and when friends come. I think she needs more stimulation than 1 individual can provide and I just simply can’t do it. I try to do playtime with toys for at least 30 minutes every day and/or a walk on the leash around my building. She is just the neediest animal I have ever encountered and I have owned dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, grew up with another cat, and both my siblings have cats. I know Siberians are slow to mature but this is ruining my life and I love her to death but I also can’t stand this. I need help and the vets are just not being helpful.

Introduce me to your Siberian(s)?
Photo introductions very, very welcome!
Otherwise I’d love to hear the name you chose and the story behind, if you’re feeling open to sharing!
So excited to hear about (and see) your floofs! 🩷
Bonus points for anyone who has a single dog and no other cats when they adopted their Siberian and wants to share. That’s the situation I’m in right now and am trying to make up my mind on if it’s a good idea.

Hello!
I’m so glad I found this page, I’ve been looking at Siberian cats for over 6 months now and I have a few questions! Firstly, my husband suffers from allergies and I’ve read that even allergy sufferers do well with Siberians, can anyone attest to that in here?? Lastly, are there differences in the males personalities versus female personalities? I have a three year old son who is very gentle with animals, he loves cats so naturally he’s going to want to be near the cat as much as possible! Not sure if males are more tolerant or if females are! I know once raised with my son the cat will adapt, but if a specific gender would be more beneficial for our family, I’d like to get whichever would be best!!
Thank you •ᴗ•
