Mod Discussion: We are going to write a Beginner's Guide to Shopify SEO, what should we include in it?

My team, fellow mods, and I are almost done producing a Beginner's Guide to Dropshipping over in /r/Dropshipping. Our goal was to give newcomers the tools to avoid scammers, help us fight spam, eliminate the flood of basic questions we get, and help more dropshippers find success quickly. So far, it has been a resounding success.

Other subs on Reddit are constantly getting bombarded with both basic SEO questions about Shopify and SEO spam targeting Shopify merchants. The few posts we see here also fall largely into these categories. I have heard fellow mods groan about this issue as it gets monotonous for them to manage.

Our goal with a Beginner's Guide in this sub would be to provide something of real value to Redditors that helps them get a good start on SEO with Shopify, eliminates specific vectors abused by scammers (including link spam sellers and course malware scammers), provides links to further reading, and is something Mods of other subs and Redditors feel they trust enough to share and recommend.

The question to you, the extremely silent but growing Shopify SEO community, what subjects should this Beginner's Guide include. What resources should we ensure are added?

I estimate starting on this by end of April or early May. So take your time to post thoughts below, no rush.

[Mod Question]: Verifying SEO Consultants and Agencies?

We received a question via modmail (i.e. "message the moderators") asking if we would provide a way for SEO consultants and agencies to become verified in this sub. This is not the first time the question has been posed and I assume it is being requested by my colleagues who want to try and standout in here while giving advice.

I see no problems with building out a flair for "Verified SEO" but the path to doing so is a little murky. How would we verify they are an SEO? Since anyone can start and claim to be one with no certificate or degree and because results are often kept private/secret or outright faked, how would we even validate such a thing?

If this is something the community here would find useful please help me understand how you to provide such verification for you.

Questions to answer in the comments:

  • Should we have a flair for verified SEO?

  • If yes, how should that verification be done? Should I just use my best judgement or is there some marker you believe would be applicable to most if not all SEOs?

How do you store your Google Search Console data long term?

Since GSC only keeps 16 months of data, I’m looking for a way to build up a historical archive so I can compare year over year and spot long-term trends.

How do you handle this? Do you export manually to Google Sheets or Excel on a schedule, use the BigQuery bulk export, connect it to Looker Studio?

I’d love to hear what’s worked for you, how much effort it takes to maintain, and whether there’s anything you wish you’d started tracking earlier.

Thanks!

do product variants deserve their own urls, or is one page enough?

say a t-shirt in 6 colors - one product page or a page per color? shopify defaults to one url with variant parameters, but people do search for the specific color. curious if anyone has actually split variants out and seen it matter, or if it just creates duplicate-page problems for nothing

Blog posts competing with my collection pages. How would you fix this?

Hi!

I run a small fashion brand on Shopify in a competitive niche. Early on I wrote lots of blog posts for traffic and topical authority, and it worked. But now some posts compete with my collection pages for the same keywords (e.g. a guide about a style vs. the collection for that style).

My internal linking right now:

  • Homepage links to 3 top main collections, a few best selling products and the about and contact pages.
  • Menu links to all collections and the blog, no individual posts
  • Blog posts link heavily to products and matching collections
  • Collections have an SEO text block linking back to the matching posts
  • Product pages link to related collections, similar products and sometimes a post

Do you have any feedback on this? Or could you share what worked for you?

Thanks a lot!

what's the smallest seo fix that actually made a difference for you?

not the big stuff like migrations or a full content plan. the small things - fixing one title tag, cleaning up a redirect chain, adding alt text that was missing. what's the one small fix that surprised you with how much it moved?

How do you handle SEO for a multi vendor Shopify store?

I’m curious how people manage SEO when a store has products from lots of different sellers. Do you let each seller write their own product descriptions, or keep everything consistent yourself?

I’d imagine duplicate content and messy product listings could become a problem as the catalog grows. Anyone here running a marketplace like this? What’s worked best for you?

I just launched my first Shopify app (an SEO fixer with review-first AI drafts). Looking for feedback and tips on getting early reviews

Hi all, I’m Devendra, a small developer in India. I run an online jewellery store and built this app to fix my own SEO problems. It went live on the Shopify App Store today.

Winking Toad SEO Fixer audits a store, lists what to fix, and drafts SEO titles, meta descriptions, image alt text and product descriptions with AI. The merchant reads and edits every draft. Nothing is saved until they press Apply, and each change can be undone. It asks for products-only permissions, doesn’t touch the theme, and it also works while a store is still password-protected.

I’d really like your help with two things:

How did you get your first 5 real reviews without breaking Shopify’s rules?

How do you handle SEO for products that sell out and come back every season?

stuff like christmas ornaments or swimwear - the page ranks decently by the time the season ends, then it sits out of stock for 8 months. do you leave it live, noindex it, or redirect it? leaving it live feels right for the rankings but half the year it's a dead end for anyone who lands on it

Collections vs product pages - which ones actually bring your organic traffic?

for stores that have both, curious where the organic clicks actually land. collection pages look built for the broader terms and product pages for the long tail, but advice goes both ways on which deserves the attention first. what does your search console say?

Is it worth writing blog posts around your best Shopify products in 2026?

I’ve been thinking about whether it’s worth creating blog content around the products you care most about selling.

I used to assume that if a product page was detailed enough, most of the SEO work should happen there. But while working on the Blog Builder in my Shopify SEO app, I kept seeing something different in Search Console.

A skincare store might sell a vegan moisturizer, while people are finding the site through searches like “best vegan moisturizer for dry skin” or questions about ingredients, routines, or skin types. Trying to squeeze all of that into the product description starts to feel forced. Some of those searches probably deserve their own article, with the product linked naturally where it makes sense.

That pushed me to build a workflow that looks for existing search demand, turns one of those opportunities into a brief, and creates a Shopify blog draft with the title, keywords, outline, FAQs and internal links already considered.

I still wouldn’t publish generated content without reviewing it first, and the feature is still in Preview. But I’m starting to see the blog less as a separate content channel and more as a way to support products that already have related search demand.

For Shopify store owners, do you intentionally create articles around your important products, or do you keep your blog strategy separate from the catalog?

Getting blog traffic to your Shopify store but not converting? Try These 2 Proven Strategies

If your Shopify store is getting organic traffic from Google through blog posts, but those visitors aren't exploring your products, you might be missing an important step.

You're attracting visitors, but you're not guiding them toward your products.

Here are two things I'd focus on:

1. Add internal links to relevant collection pages

If you're writing a blog about how to style joggers, link relevant keywords like “men's joggers” to your joggers collection page.

Make sure the link fits naturally into the content. Don't force keywords or add links where they don't make sense.

2. Add product CTAs between blog sections

Don't wait until the end of the article to show your products.

Add relevant product cards or CTAs between sections where readers are likely to be interested in what you're selling.

For example, someone reading about jogger styling ideas could see a relevant jogger collection with product images and a clear “Shop Now” CTA.

This gives readers an easy way to explore your products without having to search for them separately.

One important thing: These changes won't automatically increase sales. Some visitors are only researching, and others may not be ready to buy. But relevant internal links and in-content product CTAs can help move interested readers closer to a purchase.

For those running Shopify stores, have you tried adding product cards inside blog posts? Did you notice any improvement in product page visits or conversions?

If your blog gets traffic but barely drives sales, the problem may not be the content.

Check where your blog links are sending readers.

Instead of linking only to more blog posts, build clear paths to relevant collections and products based on search intent.

Traffic is useful. Traffic with a next step is better.

How do you keep a consistent blog schedule on a small team?

A pattern you see over and over with small stores and their blogs: three posts go out in one motivated week, then nothing for a month or two while day to day work takes over. The posting itself isn't the hard part - the rhythm is.

For those of you running organic content for a small store: what actually fixed this for you? Batching a month of posts in one sitting? Cutting frequency down to something you can sustain? Handing it off to a freelancer?

And what frequency did you land on - is one solid post a month enough to matter, or is the consistency itself the point?

AI references as Direct

I know that ChatGPT adds ref=ChatGPT.com but the store traffic still treated as Direct. Any recommendation to fix it?
