In the event that you, a loved one, or pet is stung by a scorpion, DO NOT seek medical or veterinary consultation on this subreddit. Seek emergency attention immediately or consult with a medical professional. Hobbyists are not medical experts or veterinary professionals and our advice will never replace those authorities.
Please do not solicit or give veterinary or medical advice on this subreddit at any time. Doing so will result in immediate infraction and removal.

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.
In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.
We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.
These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.
If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.
If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail
EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Hi! Just a couple questions from a new momma of a baby AFS.
These are the newest pictures I've been able to get, 2 days ago they were out all day so I was able to some new ones (they hid up against their hygrometer / thermometer).
I got them a month ago, came with the tank and all, and they were the smallest little baby ever! But they have grown SO much in this little amount of time, and I think they need a new tank?
At the expo I purchased them from last month I asked some questions yesterday, as I went back to look around for possible new babies to get (nothing this month) and saw the people I got them from there again. They told me that they will need a new tank once the size of a half dollar, and I feel as though they look about that size?? Or am I just imagining? They are growing so fast!
But for some context about care:
They are fed 1x a week (what I was told is best) and given mini meals worms in a water bottle cap, which is placed in an hour before lights out (9pm is lights out for my babies, so 8pm). They said that my scorpion is most active on Wednesday's (?) so that's when I WAS feeding, but one wednesday they did not eat! I tried again on thursday after, and they did, so it's been every thursday for the last 3 weeks.
There are springtails in there that take care of poop + wormie bodies.
I refresh the water every day but do not fill all the way as I was told babies could drown, maybe a little less than half or about half of the little cap (shown in pic).
My 2nd main question is: when do I need to mist??
The hygro/thermometer in there is flush against the soil, so it always reads really high! And I have no accurate way to know what it is, but the last thing I want to do is have my baby with low humidity!
The humidity reads 99%, but I have nowhere else to put it since baby is in such a small tank.
Their behavior is normal, I think? When lights are on they stay in their burrow- which was premade by the people I got them from- and come out at 9, even if my frog requires an early lights out due to stress (this has only happen 2x). They wander around (I sometimes check and see if they have come out) and basically party all night long until it's 9am and the lights are back on. Sometimes they'll be out for very, very few minutes when lights are on (which is how I've gotten the small amount of pics I have).
But yeah, overall I'm just posting to make sure my little scorpo is OK. I genuinely really want to upgrade this baby because I feel as though they need it. I can post some pictures of the tank as a whole if required, but it's basically a small tupperware with a lock lid. And the humidity always stresses me- it doesn't LOOK dry but obviously I don't dig around and live in there, they do!
So please let me know! 🫶

My partner and I got our first scorpion, and I was finally able to get a photo of its belly. It's still small, so I'm not sure if it's too soon to be able to tell.
I'll try to get a clearer photo, the next time they're on the side of their tank. From this photo do you think male or female?

Hi everyone I’m looking to get into owning scorpions and want all the info I can get on how to properly care for them, everything from temps to keep them at and humidity or no humidity, to best food, no info is bad info and I’d love to hear from everyone in this community

I got a 4 instar Gigantometrus titanicus, so I'm wondering if it's possible to determine its sex at this stage.
(However, I'm not entirely sure if it's actually in the 4 instar, since it's a bit smaller than I expected. Its body length, excluding the pincers, is approximately 6–7 cm.)

Hey everyone. First post so be gentle lol. I got two Asian forest scorpions and I think I was a little overzealous in watering the substrate ( coconut husk). I’m attempting a bioactive set up. My dilemma is what to do about drying out the substrate. Should I add more dry substrate? Or add a small heating pad to speed up things drying out.

Hey guys, i have 5 Tarantulas, and i have a great interest in scorpions as well! I find them to be very unique and awesome just like tarantulas, so i definitely want one, but just havent gotten there yet. I do have an idea on what type of scorpion i would want though!
Im interested in the big boys which ive heard are emperors and asian forest scorpions (let me know if theres any more!) and live for awhileee (10+ years). I would also love a species that is terrestrial and out and about.
And i also ask how easy do you think it would be to transition into scorpion keeping as a tarantula keeper

Hello, could you please help me identify this juvenile scorpion? It should be in its fourth molt, and it was sold to me as Gigantometrus swammerdami. After closer inspection, I have some doubts, especially regarding the distance between its eyes. They seem to be too close to each other. It is approximately 6-7 cm long. I'd really appreciate your help!

It’s crazy how much more active this little guy is compared to my P. transvaalicus. As soon as I opened the lid, it started zooming around the enclosure, while my P. transvaalicus just casually wanders around.
Is it normal for A. bicolor to barely ever use its hide, though?

Located in West Central Texas, called poison hotline and they said I should be fine because it is likely not that dangerous. I would just like to have some piece of mind as I’m feeling some light symptoms like chills.

Hi,
Is there anyone who can tell me what this scorpion's gender is, and how you can see that?
These are the best pics I have, she/he doesn't show her/his belly much.
r/Scorpions • u/TragicOtter • 5d ago
I'm not getting one yet, just doing research for now. The tank would be in a room where a dim light is on until 2 am, bright enough to see where stuff is but not bright enough to read I would say. I thought about covering three sides of the tank with simple black background, which should block out most of the light, and there will be a black lid on top but it won't be a complete darkness.
Would that be alright or should I do something different?

My 30 × 30 × 45 cm Bioactive Emperor Scorpion Vivarium — A Little Prehistoric Jungle! 🦂🌿🦖
Hey everyone!
I wanted to share my latest bioactive vivarium project. It's a 30 × 30 × 45 cm (approximately 40.5 L / 12 × 12 × 18 inches) setup that I've been working on for one of my emperor scorpions, a large male sold in Korea as the “Forest Form.”
The scorpion hasn’t moved in yet, but the enclosure is nearly finished. I wanted to create a miniature prehistoric rainforest centered around a T. rex skull, with real moss, living plants, driftwood, and a rocky landscape.
Drainage layer
I built the drainage system using:
- porous drainage stones
- zeolite
- activated charcoal
- plastic mesh and a plastic grid to separate the drainage layer from the substrate
The goal was to let excess water drain down while keeping the upper substrate moist enough for moss and tropical plants.
Substrate and terrain
I used peat as the lower layer, and Animalium ABG Mix as the upper substrate.
The ABG Mix contains:
- peat moss
- bark
- sphagnum moss
- charcoal
- added beneficial microorganisms (EM)
I also used small volcanic rocks to build up the terrain and reinforce the surface.
One of my goals was to discourage excessive burrowing while still allowing natural exploration and hiding behavior.
The T. rex skull is the main visual centerpiece and is intended to serve as a sheltered hiding area.
Live moss and plants
Everything that looks like moss is real, living moss — no artificial moss was used.
The main mosses are Korean mosses commonly sold as Yun moss and Yangteol moss.
Planted species include:
- Marcgravia umbellata
- red Marcgravia umbellata
- Ficus pumila
- small creeping plants including a locally sold plant called Jeju aegimoram
- Selaginella uncinata, which I planted very recently
The moss is still establishing, and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything fills in over time.
Bioactive cleanup crew
Of course, the vivarium also has a cleanup crew:
- springtails
- dwarf white isopods
They help break down organic debris and support the bioactive ecosystem.
Environment
The room is usually maintained around 26–28°C (79–82°F). I mist the enclosure regularly, and the mesh top provides ventilation.
My main goal was to create a natural-looking, planted enclosure rather than a simple display box.
There’s still some growing-in to do, but I’m pretty happy with how it looks so far.
What do you guys think? 🦂🌿🦖

There is an emperor scorpion in a >1 gallon “enclosure” and barely any substrate at my petsmart, I want to buy/rescue/resell him but i fear that I may really really really want to handle him. If i try to give him to someone better, i csnnot ship him across the world. I’d need to find someone local.
Google said it was highly advised to not handle scorpions due to fall risk and venom. Is their venom really that bad? Do they sting regularly? I’m going to the petsmart tomorrow to see how long he has been there and if it has been too long, my mom will let me buy him. I have enough money to buy him/her all the things it needs. Please give tips and answer any questions, thank you!
