Salinas released a new Measure H FAQ. It’s worth reading before you vote.

There’s been a lot of conflicting information about Measure H, especially around rental assistance and the rental registry. The City’s new FAQ answers several of those questions directly.
A few things stood out:
Measure H repeals four rental ordinances. It doesn’t create replacement protections. That would require separate Council action. Page 4.
It doesn’t provide new rent or deposit assistance funding. Already approved rental assistance funding remains in place even if H doesn’t pass. Page 4.
It doesn’t require new homes to be built. Page 4.
Ordinary rental registration does not request tenant names, phone numbers, emails, Social Security numbers, or immigration status. A lease isn’t required for ordinary registration, although there are exceptions, including petitions. Page 1.
Passing H doesn’t require existing registry records to be deleted. Page 4.
The City says it is unaware of a study proving these ordinances caused rental homes to leave the market, slowed construction, or raised rents. That’s different from saying those effects have been established locally. Page 5.

I’m Andrew Sandoval, Salinas City Councilmember for District 5. I’ve been asking the City to clarify these issues because residents should be able to check campaign claims against an official source.
You don’t have to take my word for any of this. Here’s the document:
Read the City of Salinas FAQ
I encourage you to Vote No on Measure H.

“The City of Salinas recently conducted a community renaming process for City parks and library facilities currently bearing the name of Cesar Chavez. As part of this process, community members were invited to submit proposed names for consideration.

We received hundreds of submissions from members of the Salinas community. Each submission was reviewed to determine whether it met the established requirements for consideration.

Following this review, the City has identified the submissions that meet the requirements and are eligible for consideration. We are now asking the community to help us determine which name(s) should move forward.”

If you’re voting NO ON H, don’t vote for Donohue either

Just a reminder that he’s a closet Yes on H voter, and his donors are yes on H donors.

This is your chance to prove that campaign money can’t buy Salinas.

Searchable interactive map of Monterey-Salinas Transit (and more)

https://sfbapt.com/map

Public transit in Salinas is quite isolated from the transit network in the SF bay area so we have just Monterey-Salinas Transit for local trips, but there are lots of options after going north into Santa Cruz and San Jose. The routes that connect to the other agencies include:

Quick tips:

  • tap a stop or route to see details and highlight the stop/route
  • tap a highlighted stop or route to un-highlight it
  • collapse/expand info box by tapping |hide| at top left
  • quickly toggle all the agencies on/off using button at top right
  • search (case insensitive) and filter agencies that show up in checkbox list using search box at top right, e.g. type in monterey
  • search (cAsE sEnsITivE) and filter actual routes and stops that show up on map using search boxes at bottom right, e.g. type in 23, 5, 25, and in the bay you also have results for Rail, Tram, Subway
    • play around with this and see how results change when you type in the same thing in the upper box versus lower box
  • link back to homepage in case you can't figure something out or want more tips also at bottom right

To play with the map search and filter, try this:

  • zoom out all the way
  • select the Show Stops option (top right)
  • type -120 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -121 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -122 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -123 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)

Another interesting thing is you can link to specific spots by copying the url directly:

I arranged the agency checkbox list (top right) by area, so the geographic area of an agency determines the agency layer checkbox position. The list starts with agencies in the North Bay in Solano County then goes counterclockwise: North Bay -> San Francisco -> Peninsula -> South Bay -> Santa Cruz -> Monterey-Salinas -> Gilroy/Hollister -> East Bay.

There are smaller agencies in the bay that are completely free (no fare) and not as well known like Presidio Go, Golden Gate Park Shuttle, Mission Bay Shuttle, South City Shuttle, commute.org shuttles, MVgo, Mountain View Community Shuttle, San Leandro LINKS, Emery Express, and Emery Go Round. If you're traveling around those areas, these agencies could help fill in some transit gaps.

Let me know if anything doesn't work (corp network/vpn/firewalls might not work) or you have any questions/requests!

🤡 Referencing “Defund The Police” & getting an endorsement from a former police chief as scare tactics. 🤡

Dennis Donohue is a Yes on Measure H, but is too much of a coward to publicly state it so he doesn’t lose votes. Please don’t vote for him.

A bunch of non 93905ers and YT washed “Latinos” who want to be important so bad that they sell out for a sense of belonging. Amor Salinas they say.

Best WiFi for Prunedale?

Ok I know Prunedale isn’t part of Salinas (aside from sharing the 93907 zip code) but any recommendations out there for more reliable WiFi/internet that I can try to persuade my dad to switch to? He currently has AT&T U-verse and has had it for a while. When I come to visit and need to work remotely for my job the connection is shit. I don’t know if fiber optics would be available/affordable now (in the past it wasn’t) or if satellite internet would be better (their house is somewhat remote and hard to access from main roads/utilities). Thanks for any recs!

Did anyone else see a giant tyre fall on the road near Steinback center today?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I was driving and right after the overpass of "welcome to Oldtown Salinas" a giant tire fell from the sky and hit my car.

Google says the address is: North Main Street merges with north Monterey street

I am new to the state so I don't know the ways so well but I am sure this is where it happened. Did anybody else see this? My car sustained some damage as it directly hit my car. What do I do? If there is anyone else here who saw this, can you validate the address that Google gave or give me a more accurate location?

TIA

WHAT HAS ACTUALLY WORKED FOR DANGEROUS ILLEGAL PARKING?

I’m curious if anyone in Salinas has dealt with this and found something that actually worked.

In my area, cars regularly park in red zones, near fire hydrants, and in spots that block your view when you’re trying to pull out into traffic. It gets much worse in the evening.

I get that parking is tight in Salinas, but blocking hydrants or making it hard to safely enter traffic is a real safety issue.

I’ve reported it through Salinas Connect and contacted the city, but the same pattern keeps coming back.

Has anyone had success with evening enforcement, better signage, curb changes, getting a councilmember involved anything else that actually made a difference?

Which Neighborhoods Have the Most Halloween Decorations and Trick-or-Treaters?

Hey everyone! I’m looking for neighborhoods that go all out for Halloween. I want to take my kids trick-or-treating somewhere with lots of decorated houses and plenty of people handing out candy.

Are there any neighborhoods where most of the houses participate, so we can spend the evening in one area instead of driving around?

We’re open to Hollister, Gilroy, San Jose, or anywhere else worth checking out. I’d love to hear your recommendations! 👻

Steinbeck’s Salinas

I grew up in Salinas in the 60s. My memory is that many residents did not like Steinbeck because he wrote about them - yeah, he fictionalized the stories and characters, but not enough that folks didn’t know whom he was referring to. F’rinstance, Cathy Ames in East of Eden was based on a woman who was very much alive when Steinbeck wrote East of Eden, and allegedly married into the Tynan family, owners of Tynan Lumber on Front Street. Tynan was her fifth husband, as I heard.

The twins were based on the young Murphy boys whose grandfather was Dr. Murphy who delivered John Steinbeck.

When the librarian proposed renaming the public library to The John Steinbeck Library, there was a lot of negative reaction. Some who were opposed to the name change back in the mid-1960s, their family names now grace the plaque outside the Steinbeck Museum.

I was young when I heard these rumours - so maybe they are all nonsense. I can’t find anything online talking about basing his stories on real Salinas residents. Anybody out there remember these rumors?

Can I count on you to Vote No on Measure H?

Can I count on you to vote NO on Measure H in Salinas?

I'm asking my fellow Salinas residents to take a few minutes to understand what we're actually voting on November 3.

There's been a lot of advertising, political messaging, and promises about Measure H. But I think voters deserve to know exactly what a YES or NO vote means.

Here's the most important thing to understand:

  • YES on H repeals four existing Salinas ordinances covering rent stabilization, tenant protections, anti-harassment, and rental registration.
  • NO on H keeps all four ordinances in place.

That's it. Measure H does not create replacement protections, fund new rental assistance, or require new housing construction.

What are the four ordinances actually doing for Salinas?

1. Rent Stabilization — Limits excessive rent increases

For covered apartments built before 1995, annual rent increases are generally limited to 2.75% or 75% of inflation, whichever is lower.

For example, on a $2,000 monthly rent:

  • A 2.75% increase = $55 more per month.
  • A 10% increase = $200 more per month.

The ordinance also limits increases to once per year and provides a process for landlords to request adjustments when necessary to earn a fair return on their investment.

2. Tenant Protection and Just Cause Eviction — Protects families from unfair displacement

This ordinance establishes rules for when tenants can be evicted, provides protections including relocation assistance in qualifying circumstances, and gives eligible displaced tenants a right to return.

It also includes notice requirements, including Spanish-language notices.

3. Anti-Harassment Ordinance — Protects tenants from intimidation

Landlords cannot use prohibited harassment, threats, intimidation, or interference with housing services to pressure tenants out of their homes.

These protections matter especially for seniors, families, and residents who may be afraid to speak up.

4. Rental Registration — Creates accountability

Requires covered rental properties to be registered with the City, helping the City administer and enforce its rental housing programs.

It also gives the City information about rental housing covered by the program.

Now let's talk about what YES on H supporters are promising.

CLAIM: Measure H will provide rental deposit assistance and emergency rent relief.

REALITY: Measure H does not establish or fund either program. The City has confirmed that the measure does not guarantee additional rental assistance funding.

CLAIM: Measure H will create better eviction protections.

REALITY: Measure H repeals the existing Tenant Protection and Just Cause Eviction Ordinance. It does not replace it with another eviction protection ordinance.

CLAIM: Measure H will increase affordable housing and housing supply.

REALITY: Measure H does not require a single new housing unit to be built, establish affordability requirements, or fund affordable housing construction.

CLAIM: We can repeal these ordinances and replace them with something better.

REALITY: Measure H does not enact replacement policies. Any future replacement would require separate City Council action, with no guarantee of approval.

Why am I voting NO?

Because I believe Salinas can protect renters while respecting property owners' rights.

Our ordinances allow landlords to receive a fair return. They provide protections against harassment and unjust displacement. And they help prevent sudden, excessive rent increases for covered households.

My question to everyone supporting YES on H is simple: If these promises are real, where are they written in the measure?

I encourage everyone to read the actual ballot language and ask questions, even if you disagree with me.

I'm Andrew Sandoval, Salinas City Councilmember for District 5, and I'm voting NO on Measure H.

Can I count on your NO vote on November 3?
