The following article was posted by SWTOR Executive Producer Keith Kanneg.

Hi folks!

Checking in again to let you all know what’s been happening with SWTOR the last few months as well as with DirectX 12!

Game Update 8.0 content

For those who may have missed previous updates with 8.0 content, we revealed that the next Era in SWTOR is called “Masters of the Force.” Keep an eye on that page as it will be updated over time as we release more details.

We also announced the core features that will be coming in 8.0:

  • The “Galaxy in Chaos” storyline
  • Ryloth, the Twi’lek homeworld (coming with Dynamic Encounters)
  • Ventures: Classic & Expert
  • Difficulty Modes
  • Children of Nul Operation
  • Level 85, New Abilities, and Balance
  • Quality of Life Improvements

We’ve also opened our Public Test Server so Subscribers can get their hands on:

  • The first and second bosses of the Operation
  • Ventures: Classic
  • Difficulty Modes
  • Combat Style Updates:
    • Sentinel/Marauder
    • Sage/Sorcerer
    • Vanguard/Powertech
    • Guardian/Juggernaut
    • Operative/Scoundrel
    • Shadow/Assassin

Iterations of the Public Test Server will continue so players can provide their feedback on these features before they go live.

We have not announced a release date yet for 8.0, but we are continuing development and will share more launch details in due time.

Developer Streams

I’m also happy to see the positive reception to the recent Developer Game Update and Let’s Play livestreams. We anticipate a few more Let’s Play streams and another Game Update livestream where we’ll go into the “Galaxy in Chaos” storyline (spoiler-free, of course!)

Our next Let's Play stream will be October 1st at 1pm CT / 6pm UTC on our streaming channel. Stay tuned for more details!

DirectX 12 Update

Since our Spring Update we’ve continued to receive enthusiastic questions about what’s coming next. I pulled in the Technical Team and they have provided the update below:

Hey SWTOR players!

Technical team here to get you up to speed on our most recent progress with DirectX 12. The last time we saw each other, we were explaining that the UI was the one feature that posed the largest obstacle for us.

We’re happy to report that the UI has been ported to DX12 and aside from minor visual differences being fixed, it is fully functional. Pulling back the curtain a bit, we had to upgrade our old version that only supported DX11 and re-architect it so it would work properly with our data. We then changed Scaleform’s DX12 rendering to use Frostbite RenderCore2 and work properly within our engine. For the more technical folks, we also had to port over hundreds of divergences to the new version and once we could verify that everything worked properly, we could move on to DX12.

With the UI in place, we are focused on adding features back into this “DX12 version” of the game to get it looking like the SWTOR you’re familiar with, and lay the groundwork for future additions. This means updating essential shaders, ensuring characters appear with proper customization (skin color, hair color, tattoos, cybernetics, scars, complexions, outfit colors), re-implementing our particle hueing systems, and much more. Lastly, general stability work and other feature additions are ongoing, so we are making fantastic progress.

The next time you hear from us we’ll share an update on when you can see the progress for yourself, and help us with a critical stage of testing for this new client! Thank you for your enthusiasm and support as we continue on the road to modernizing SWTOR!

Keith here again. And there you have it! All of us are pretty excited to get a technical test for our players in the near future.

Before I head out, I want to share some reminders to everyone!

Best Dressed Contest

Our newest community contest is underway! If you are a collector of armor and think you have all the pieces to make an outfit worthy to be displayed for all to see, you will want to enter our Best Dressed contest! Submissions are open now and being accepted until October 11, 2026. Read all of the details on how to enter here!

Gladiopodling Minipet

We have an active minipet code right now and it’s available until December 26, 2026. Redeem code “GETRDY4MOTF” on this page to get your very own Gladiopodling!

Finally, I want to encourage you again to check out the 8.0 content available on the Public Test Server, and get your hands on it if you can. We appreciate your feedback and the time you spend playing on PTS!

Thank you for playing SWTOR. We’ll see you in the next livestream!

Other For years I had been pronouncing SWTOR wrong

From the ages of 11 to 21, I had always pronounced SWTOR as Swi-TOR, or “Switter”.

I then started watching SWTORISTA. Who pronounces it as “SWO-Tor”.

Quick realisation I was mispronouncing.

Cry.

Discussion What can we reasonably expect from Broadsword's first fully numbered SWTOR expansion?

Should we be expecting it to be maybe an hour and a half of story total like all of Bioware's final 'expansions' for the game, or do we think they might give us something actually worthy of the term?

I'm kinda of two minds about it. I can't imagine the budget allocated to the game is particularly crazy, but at the same time I can't accuse them of being totally asleep at the wheel either, with the updates they have rolled out since acquiring the game. Then again, with it being confirmed to just be one new planet, I'm anticipating a pretty small thing.

What do you guys have your optimism (or pessimism) levels calibrated to?

Discussion SWTOR could have been a lot better if Bioware treat it well

Yeah it's not a WOW killer, but still it got good potential, a lot of the new content is good and I love the stronghold system. It's easy to see the dev got great idea but lack of funding and content to offer.

Had Bioware given it more care, it would have been great.

Discussion I love this Community! What other games have made you fall in love?

I’m about 2 weeks into SWTOR and I’m loving this game so damn much. The community has honestly been one of the best I’ve ever interacted with, so I just wanted to show some appreciation for how welcoming everyone has been. I’ll definitely be picking up a subscription soon!

I genuinely don’t even know how to describe how good this game feels. The worlds, music, characters, story, and atmosphere are incredible, and the graphics still look insanely beautiful in so many places for a game this old. It’s crazy how immersive it feels. I’m also a huge sci-fi fan, so that probably helps explain why I’m so hooked.

I tried getting into ESO because people said I’d love it if I enjoyed SWTOR, but even after 10+ hours, I just haven’t found that same connection yet.

So my question is, what other games have completely sucked you into their world the way SWTOR has? They don’t have to be MMOs, and I’m open to both older and newer games. I’m looking for amazing worlds, memorable stories, characters you get attached to, and satisfying progression that keeps you wanting to play more.

Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely on my radar, especially with the Steam sale going on, but I’d love to hear what games have really pulled you in and made you lose track of time.

Would love to hear your recommendations!

Discussion Ambitious New Species Option

Post image
817 Upvotes

What do you think the most ambitious character species option is that we could feasibly get in-game?

It has been stated by the developers that options must be restricted to humanoid species because of armor compatibility and animation being designed for the current humanoid models. However, armor clipping and glitches in cut scenes are common complaints in the community. Do you think it is possible that if the present animation problems are fixed, new ones might be created to expand character creation options?

Discussion My Personal Companion Rankings (Week 1)

Thumbnail

Welcome aboard this weekly series of posts that I wanted to do, where I rank all the story companions according to my personal preference! As this is an opinion piece, I'm absolutely expecting to get downvoted, but that's okay, it's just for fun :P

Once a week, I'm going to reveal five placements on my personal rankings list and go over what I think about each companion. This includes all the class story companions and five of the KOTFE companions.

That being said, let's get into it!

---

At the very bottom of my list, we have Tanno Vik at #45...

I cannot stand this character. He only works with one very specific version of a Trooper, one that I would almost never play as, and one that I'd reckon most people haven't either. For every other way that you can play your Trooper, he doesn't work at all.

A morally upstanding defender of justice? Doesn't work. A ruthless but practical soldier? Doesn't work. He doesn't even fully work with a more laid-back Trooper because he's still insubordinate and constantly pulling schemes.

People often say they can't justify having Kaliyo working with their Agent- but I consider that a skill issue. That makes sense to me. But Tanno on HAVOC SQUAD- no, that does not make sense to me at all. He'd be perfectly fine in almost any other class. But he's a terrible fit for the Trooper...in my opinion, at least.

---

At #44, we have Skadge.

The only reason I don't have Skadge at the very bottom is that at least he fits in with the Bounty Hunter class. He works within that storyline. But that doesn't mean I like him.

They kinda forgot to give Skadge any likeable qualities. If you're a light Hunter, you'd refuse to work with him. If you're a dark Hunter, you'd kill him. Neither of which is available. So he's forced into your crew, which makes him an insufferable presence.

Now, Skadge CAN work, depending on how you play your BH. I have had a BH with a good relationship with him before. But he's just so unlikeable, and so one-dimensional. A very disappointing companion.

---

At #43, we have Doc.

I wouldn't say that I HATE Doc. I can see what they were trying to do with his character. But they failed. He comes across as a massive creep and an absolute douchebag.

It'd be one thing if throughout the Knight storyline, we got to see him grow and learn from his mistakes. But we don't. He remains just as scummy the whole way through. He's better on Ossus, but it's too little too late.

He's a bad person with little redeeming qualities. I can't rank him above many other companions.

---

At #42, still within the Knight's crew, we have Rusk.

I don't dislike Rusk, necessarily. I don't...anything Rusk. He's just kinda there. And sometimes that's worse.

They give us so little to work with when it comes to him. I don't know if there's another companion with as little substance as him (except maybe one more, but we'll get to them.)

If anyone is a fan of Rusk, I would love to hear from you about why you like him. Genuinely. I want a reason to care about this guy.

---

Finishing this week's batch, we have Ashara at #41

This one might ruffle some feathers. I know Ashara has her fans. But I find her to be such a disappointing and underwhelming character.

She fails on two fronts- mechanically and narratively.

Mechanically, she's a victim of the change that was introduced in 4.0, where every companion unlocks dialogue as the story progresses. It used to be linked to their influence level, so you could only continue talking with her if she actually liked you. This makes her conversations with you, calling you a good person, more believable. But nowadays, if you're playing as a dark Inquisitor, you can still talk with her and she'll still call you a good person. It's so bizarre.

Narratively, she is a character that is PERFECTLY set up to be corruptible. Arguably more so than Jaesa. But she can't be corrupted. Now, I personally wouldn't do this very often anyway. Corruption plotlines make me a little uncomfortable. But the fact that it's not an option is ridiculous.

This girl does NOT have the fortitude to withstand corruption. Especially not from someone who's supposed to be a master manipulator. The fact that we can't turn her makes the Inquisitor look like a chump Sith.

And even ignoring all that, I find her story post-Taris to be incredibly boring, and the romance to have very little chemistry. So, I am not a fan of Ashara.

---

Thank you to those of you who have read my thoughts! I'll be sharing the next five next week. I'd love to hear what you think in the comments, whether about my opinions specifically or sharing your own picks for the worst companions.

Discussion If SWTOR were like Star Trek Online...

I've seen people talking about being able to buy our starships from the store and recruit and dismiss whichever companions we want, which kinda sounds like STO, don't you think?

One question, can the capitals be considered secondary hubs? Because if this is so, Nar Shaddaa could have been a cross faction hub similar to DS9 or Drozana Station. What other stuff from STO do you wish SWTOR has?

Question Any other similar/identical armors to these? (Intrepid Knight & Dark Interrogator)

Intrepid Knight (front)
Intrepid Knight (back)
Dark Interrogator (chest & bracers)

Hi, folks! I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether there are any other armors with the same shape/design as these two...

I love the whole Intrepid Knight set (aside from the boots), but it annoys me that the red is the part that can't be dyed lol. The shape and design of the chest piece in particular is just chef's kiss though, so I'm wondering if there are any others like it?

The Dark Interrogator I really only like the chest piece and the bracers, but I do really like the chest so basically same question -- any twins floating around out there, maybe in other colors?

Thank you! (From both me and my brain, because the Space Barbie is both so fun and also so overwhelming at times! 😅)

Discussion Swtor support so far has been … slow

I recently started playing Swtor again, I haven’t played I. At least 5 years probably closer to 10. When I logged into what I thought was my main, everything was gone. Characters legacy everything. After asking here on the question thread someone advised to double check I was in the correct account. Sure enough I tried another email that wa Amy main email back in the day and I remembered the password! Small problem it now request a OTP. I no longer have that email. It was a work email, and evean though I work for the company still we went though a rebranding a few years back and our domain changed. (Example: @bobrossconstruction.com changed to brconstruction.com) it can’t redirect the url to my inbox. And the old url is still owned by the company and the old url points to the new url, just no email forwarding. I emailed support and haven’t hear back, it’s been a week. Should I sub on my empty account and contact support that way? Will it be quicker?

Edit:called support and had my account back in less than 15 min. Never called phone support for a video game, but was pleasantly surprised!

Tech Support Very confused about where the game files are for this?

Okay so the other day I installed the game again to keep my names rolling for all my characters as some I haven't played since last year.

Normal steps, it gets installed, it does the updates and I run the game, jump in, log in on all the characters I wanted to keep and deleted some others I haven't used in years.

Then I leave the game, shut down my PC and got to work, It's now a couple days later and I remember I have it installed and don't really plan on playing it any time soon, and it's just taking up space on my laptop, so I go to uninstall is, but I can't find the files anywhere, they aren't in any of the program files , the are on steam or in the steam files as I don't used the steam launcher (direct site download version), it's not in %appdata% they aren't even showing up when I look it up in system search, hell, the launched should come up in installed apps, and it doesn't, it didn't exist anywhere, but I was still on 65gb of system space left, so it WAS still installed, but it is not ANYWHERE it should be, or could be, unless it set to hidden, but it shouldn't be as I didn't set it to that and I don't think it's set to that by default.

In the end I relaunched the SWTOR Setup Exe, and clicked uninstall, and it was done in a split second, I check my system, and It's now on 122gb so it DID do it.

But where the hell was it?

With the confirmed shut down of BioWare, where does that leave SWTOR?

I know Broadsword assumed direct development control from BioWare in 2023, but with the original studio being completely shuttered now will there be any sort of effect on SWTOR?
