(Warning: Very long text, broke down based on story patch content)
While I had two characters I had kept up to date with the story content as released (Smuggler and Bounty Hunter, both Saboteurs), I decided to wait for a while to truly take other characters through LOTS.
As someone who was not personally fond of KOTFE at launch (to the point I left midway through KOTFE) and came back years later during Onslaught and decided it wasn't so bad as I recalled (although I still do not like the expansion, especially in multiple playthroughs) and seeing the reaction of some of the playerbase shift to a more favorable one over the recent years, I decided I would try the same for the current one so I could evaluate best for its content (gameplay and story) than through the terrible release schedule and see how I felt about it afterwards.
Since I was already familiar with how the Saboteur route unfortunately went, I brushed up my Agent and Trooper Loyalists and decided to see how it would go. With all that said, let us start then with:
- 7.0 - Legacy of the Sith (Launch)
Honestly, it was surprisingly decent. We start somewhat strong with Manaan as a focus of the Faction War and then we address the remaining thread left at the end of Onslaught with Malgus on the Ruins of Nul. It still gives a good impression with interesting dialogue choices, and a nice pace between story and gameplay.
Really liked the fact that we still got a few moments of being addressed by our new role instead of Commander (Anri calls the Agent Keeper, while Admiral Rava the Trooper Colonel). Left me with somewhat of a good impression then and I still feel the same about it.
It feels lika a natural continuation of launch. Manaan is a decent Daily Area, comparable to Oricon in my opinion, not better, but not worse. It goes completely unoticeable as an individual patch unless you are already aware how it was released. We see a bit of Malgus, we see a bit of Sa'har but everything is fine so far.
We finally got to deal with the Hidden Chain and oh boy I still wish this was were it ended instead of dragging further into the following patches. While most parts of the story are fine, we start having to deal with what I consider the assassination of the character of Shae Vizla. Sure, she was always hotheaded but here she starts to get really annoying really fast. The fact that Heta survives/escapes just makes a lot of the patch feels really bad at the end. Compared to the previous patches, it feels definitely a downgrade on the story quality even though the presentation was better.
Ruhnuk as a daily area was mostly fine. The new mandalorian armor from the reputation vendor was definitely a highlight of the rewards, but I feel is a bit larger so I put in a category similar to Ossus.
We also got the start of the Prototype Venture Quest, which even if you already completed will still show up on your alts quest log which was very annoying. I love my Basilisk though.
Oh boy, what can I say about the most useless patch of the whole expansion! We get pulled to Voss, to assist Voss and Gormak on their stupid activities towards a community center, with some nebulous prophecy by the three and after doing a bunch of minor tasks completely unfit to our character role, we get said meeting that simply says Malgus plan will pass whether he lives or dies and it was all just for nothing. Only redeeming parts of this patch are the Arcaan dialogue (if you saved him and let him assist with the Darth Nul quest) and Sana-Rae revealing that she chose the Alliance instead her own people. Not worth it a full patch of story. Shrine of Silence is an okay Flashpoint with the major drawback of having a puzzle that I still see people nowadays struggle.
Unfortunately, we are followed up by another mediocre patch... Chains in the Dark put the Hidden Chain on the focus and makes us fight them on Ord Mantell. In general the story is "alright" and playing as a Loyalist you butt less heads with Krovos and Arn, so it didn't felt as bed as it did on my Saboteur. But most of the story was annoying.... Why they decided to put two annoying NPCs in the same patch? Petra and Sa'har were competing to see who I disliked the most, but it is Petra that wins by a mile. We fight some Hidden Chain top member and it feels completely stupid, but at least it had more interesting gameplay than the previous patch and served for something.
Kessan's Landing is an alright Daily Area. Rewards are definitely a downgrade from Ruhnuk even for Republic players but again feels very comparable to something like Oricon or Yavin. We also have a few more quests from the Prototype Basilisk to clear in order to empty the Mission Log.
Funny enough it doesn't feel as bad as the last two patches, and just by that comparison it is somewhat more enjoyable to play. I was then hit for the first time with the change on the Voice Actor for the Male Agent, and although it was a bit weird at the start, I think the new VA grew on me that I kinda like his performance. He is not trying to imitate the origina VA and has his own suave style which is still fitting for the character.
Story wise, we once again follow Sa'har on her stupid plan of sabotaging the Hidden Chain from inside by finding a shuttle on Hutta. The Minboosa District zone is fine as it is, but feels kinda of a waste as there is nothing besides the main story to do there. It didn't needed to be a dedicated zone for that. The arc dealing with the fugitives was fine, and I liked that there were different outcomes based on who you supported during their escape.
With the shuttle we then get to the Hidden Chain base were we can save Petra sister or let her to die (I'm not that petty but it was tempting). We also deal with the very boring fight against the most boring of the newly added NPCs Ri'kan which gets voiced by Matt Mercer of all people (such a waste). It is also the start of a big issue I have with these next patches, the removal of the player agency while still behind a fake player choice. Save or let Ri'kan die, run without looking back or at least try to help afterwards. Nothing matters, it plays exactly the same.
We then end with Shae making everything worse by freeing Malgus and climbing on the "I can't wait to be able to dispatch you" ladder, which is sad because I used to like her character.
- 7.6 to 7.8 - Galactic Threads
On one hand this is a funny patch to talk about because its content was pushed to 7.8 which now doesn't feel as bad as it gives much more story content than most of the previous patches. We got three separate storylines and then a final 4th storyline converging at the end.
Hoth was mostly fine, long spaces to travel but the story is mostly okay, even if doesn't feel as important. Nar Shadaa with Telos and then Elom was better, even if the Darth Nul puzzles were kinda silly. I find funny that they simply decided to overlook/retcon the fact that Telos sends a message to Republic players after Onslaught and he is just treated still as a member of the Alliance. Another detail as a loyalist is that again it didn't felt as if there was any bigger conflict with the Alliance and our factions, just some animosity at best. I wish they didn't had that stupid romantic plot on Tatooine which also felt pointless, had terrible voice acting and it really felt unnecessary (I don't have anything against being a queer romance, it was just a bad boring arc).
The final arc on Ilum was okay, is a good day when we get an excuse to go on adventure with Lana Beniko, and there was some cute dialogue with my Agent (who is married with her). Nul fight was alright and the final reveal with Darth Jadus still felt good, as I was already a big fan of the character (hate the new pants though).
So we pick it up were we left, but we are then interrupted by our faction deciding that it was enough. Playing as a Loyalist it does feel quite jarring to simply go from a neutral stance to a completely hostile one just because of Malgus and Shae. Seems like everyone forgot that it was our character that capture Malgus in the first place and even if you pick the lines that agree with your faction, we see our lack of agency continue on. Let them pick the Holocron, it still goes badly. Tell Tau/Rivix to not steal the Holocron, they do it anyway. Tell them or don't about Jadus, nothing changes. It was quite frustrating imo.
On board of the Enigma, we then meet Jadus and as some may have seen in a separate post I'm a bit frustrated that there is very little dialogue that seems to address the fact that this agent of mine had sided with him during Erradication Day. I understand that they want him as the bad guy, but some of us have been waiting for years for this and it didn't had a satisfactory payoff. Doing the puzzles on the Enigma were fine but doing it twice felt really annoying and I'm sorry for anyone who decides to do it on more alts than I did.
The Rivix betrayal was fine, but man, I really wish they didn't had made Tau also be stupid. it was unnecessary, they could had made her fight to rescue us, gets captured to them show on Khar Shian. Complete betrayal of her character to side with a Sith considering all her past trauma.
So we escape the Enigma, Arn/Anri rescue our character and we follow for the conclusion of the expansion. Overall, I still think it was a great patch in comparison to most of the other story patches of this expansion but now that I played from start to finish, I still rank it below LOTS launch in enjoyability.
So we finally get to the conclusion. Khar Shian, Malgus, Hetta, Shae and our faction problem. Once more, forced by the lack of agency, you can pick the most agreeable lines, nothing changes, Supreme Chancellor/Empress treat you exactly the same, except for the whole revealing you are not an ally, although Lana do have a few lines that makes me think we are going to a KOTFE situation in the upcoming expansions.
The novelty of playing as NPCs ran out fairly quickly on this patch if you run with more than a single character. The terrible space mission (which thank god is completely skippable), the slow walk and fight with the Basilisk, playing as Lana, Theron, Malgus... I was missing my character most of the time. Also hey, another lack of agency when we arrive! Shoot the Twins or don't, doesn't matter, they still escape, nothing changes.
Shae finally get her fight against Hetta, but not before having a very bad dialogue but at least Rass is there to tell her some truths, even though at the end didn't matter. Shae gets to die as a "hero" and everyone has to pretend to be sad about it because the Mandalorians are. But that is done at least. I like Jekiah and Rass but man I hope they go back to have minimal relevance in the future.
Then the final showdown against Jadus, which was mostly fine. Still feels a bit silly how he just goes Saturday Morning Cartoon away on his Space Pod and Malgus once again takes the player agency and decides he is gonna boot up the force throught the whole galaxy and you can try to stop him or not and it doesn't matter, the message goes through.
Supreme Chancellor/Empress decides to bombard the temple even though Lana tells them not to, and threatens them even. Doesn't matter, story ends on a climax instead of a proper resolution as all previous expansions and I end on mixed feelings.
I'm glad that overall still felt better than some of the lull patches like Old Wounds, Chains in the Dark and Desperate Defiance but man the lack of agency felt hard. Also not knowing where they are taking this story just left me again with a bad taste on my mouth at the end where I keep questioning the majority of the choices made on this expansion.
SO ANSWERING THE QUESTION: LEGACY OF THE SITH, WAS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
I still rank as the worst expansion we had so far, but honestly, playing without the long wait between patches it felt mostly fine. A very mid story with a lot of lows and some lukewarm highs but not offensive enough for me to completely give up on where we going next, even if I'm not exactly hopeful on what the next story beat will be.
The fact that even Loyalists are pretty much treated the same at the end did sting, and makes me believe we are once again probably breaking from the faction war again to deal with Jadus, but I could be surprised.
Thank you for anyone who takes their time to read this long-ass essay/retrospective, I've been wanting to put into text some of my feelings about the expansion in order to help myself process better my own opinions as well.
