Buying Help Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread
Hi there fine folks of r/SUP, it's time for your monthly "What Board Should I Get?" discussion thread.
Start by reading the "Buying a SUP" section of the wiki!
There is a ton of information there! Once you've read through the wiki, create a top-level comment in this post to ask for help! Posts made on this subject outside of this discussion thread will be removed and asked to post here instead.
You can also check all of the previous "What Board Should I get?" threads.
For general information on choosing board size and shape, check out the wiki, or these two blog posts on the subject: Choosing the Right Size SUP and Understanding Paddle Board Shapes.
Please provide ALL of the following information so that we can help you as best as possible:
- Desired Board Type: Inflatable or Hard
- Your Height and Weight (please include if you will also bring kids/dogs/coolers/etc. and estimated weights)
- Desired use/uses (casual, fitness, racing, yoga, whitewater, surfing, etc.) and terrain (ocean, river, lake, etc)
- Experience level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
- Your budget (please provide an actual number) and country location (to help determine availability)
- What board(s) you current have or have used and what you liked/didn't like about them
The more of this information you can provide, the more accurately we can help you find a board that you'll love!
If you are responding to a comment with a suggestion - explain why! Don't just name a board and leave it there. Add to the discussion. If you are recommending against a specific board - explain why!

How To Question COLD WEATHER PADDLING SAFETY AND CLOTHING
Things are cooling down in the Northern Hemisphere and lots of folks are (rightfully) asking what to do to keep paddling safely when it's colder.
ColdWaterSafety.org for detailed information about paddling safety in cold water
This guide for stand up paddle boarding in the winter has information distilled from Cold Water Safety along with recommendations on types of clothing for different water temperatures.
Always Dress For Immersion!
No matter your skill level, we are all between swims. Immersion in cold water can be debilitating and even deadly within seconds. Always dress for the water temperature, even on warmer days. It's far easier to cool down while paddling than it is to warm back up.
Cold shock is a serious concern in water as "warm" as the low 50F range (10C) and can cause near-instant drowning.
Water transfers heat ~25x faster than air. Hypothermia is a serious concern even in these shoulder seasons before it gets really cold. Bring dry clothing, a towel, and warm beverages with you (on the beach or in a dry bag).
Wear Your PFD / Life Jacket!
While a PFD isn't technically thermally protective, it can help. But more importantly it will help keep you afloat in an emergency. "But I'm a good swimmer!" Are you better than a USCG Rescue Swimmer? It didn't take long (less than a minute) for this one to suffer from incapacitation in cold water (Jump to 6:15).
Follow Basic Paddling Safety Guidelines
Check the weather, use appropriate equipment, wear your PFD, paddle with a partner, carry effective communication, leave a float plan.
When in doubt, don't go out.

Gear/Repairs/DIY Electric pump to manual hose adapter?
Good afternoon!
I lucked out at the Goodwill Bins and picked up an electric pump for my paddleboard (also a Bins score!) for about $2. The only problem with it is that it did not come with the hose, and the ones that come with the manual pump are a completely different size and threading.
I found plenty of replacement hoses for about $20 online, but I already have this hose, very limited space, and quite frankly I am a cheap bastard. Does anybody make a simple adapter that can work to attach the manual hose up to my electric pump? All I'm finding are Schrader valve adapters, which I am intrigued by but do not need.
Thanks for any help you all can give me!

Customizing a iSup
Just a curious question,
Has anyone attempted to customize the look of a iSup? Im guessing decals won’t remain on and air brushing wont last or might adversely affect the material. What I have is not plain white but I’d like to give it some attitude maybe a little color to it. Any thoughts?

Paddle With Me Winter SUP in Austria/Germany: anyone up for paddling around Mondsee, Walchensee, Wolfgangsee?
Hi all,
I'll be doing quite a few winter SUP sessions over the coming months around Mondsee, Walchensee, Wolfgangsee and the surrounding lakes in Austria and Germany.
If you're from the area and would like to join, send me a DM. Always happy to paddle with company, especially in cold conditions, where going out in a group is safer anyway.

SUP whitewater PFD?
I have been doing some runs on my local river with a PFD that is technically rated for whitewater, although it’s a little sketchy according to my instructor. What are you guys using for whitewater?
Is a class 5 really necessary? Looking at the ninja and ninja pro, but if I’m going to drop $150+ on an off I want to make sure I’m getting the right one. The astral green jacket seems overkill.
Oh and what is the difference between a kayak and SUP pfd? Are there any brands or models that specifically cater towards sup?

Paddleboard Camping in Algonquin Park | Fall Colours on Glassy Lakes
Before this trip I'd been looking for paddleboard portaging videos and couldn't find much. There's tons of canoe tripping content, but almost nothing showing loading up a SUP and heading into the backcountry.
I honestly wasn't sure how feasible it was. Would portages be miserable? Would I tip everything into the lake?
So I tried it and filmed the whole thing to show what it actually looks like. 3 days / 2 nights in Algonquin Park: Rain Lake → Sawyer Lake → Jubilee Lake, where I camped, with a day paddle to Juan Lake.
Short answer: it's very doable. It's my first video, so feedback is welcome:
If you've been wondering whether you could do a trip like this on your SUP, happy to answer any questions!
