New RQ:G RQG better new character sheet

New-ish player and GM here, had the following complaints regarding the default character sheet I sought to address here for my own group by making this new one, Hope this not-so-subtly nudges Chaosium in the right direction when making the sheets for the Revised edition. Several of these wont matter to you if you play in person with printed sheets, but as someone who plays primarely online it was extremely annoying:

  • On the fillable sheet the text fields are so narrow that the text is basically unreadble unless super zoomed in.
  • the check boxes are too tiny and again, basically impossible to see unless really zoomed in (i'm 24 with no eyesight issues btw, my players are of the same age range and no glasses and they all agreed it was a pain in the ass)
  • The family history worksheet is redundant (and therefore confusing for newbies) as theres already another sheet to include ancestors, living fam, treassures, etc. bundled in
  • Reputation is a cool mechanic and its sheet was never bundled into the default
  • The whole of the weapons section... its inconsistently listing some as categories (2-handed axes) and some as hyperspecific individual weapons (longsword, shortsword, rapier, scratch-my-back-sword, kopesh), which also serves to make it overwhelming.
  • The hit locations over the man-rune tracker looks really cool, but are again a bit too small to see properly, and makes it impossible to add/remove limbs (say via chaotic corruption), or to use with certain elder races (no way to add wings, tails etc), ik theres a non-human sheet but I never found a fillable version for it. Also the font and color for it made it easy to miss that it tells you the dice rolls per location to the point me and a one of my players didnt notice it did include it until after i finished the new sheet.

As i was finishing the new sheet I discovered, after a year of play, that there was a 1.2v of the sheet in the forums, with slightly bigger text boxes but everything else the same, and the text boxes still too small. Idk why this 1.2v wasnt added to the chaosium free downloads page, or the drivethru rpg page, or the itch. io page but it wouldve been nice to see it in any of these as a new player so that it could be found.

Changes implemented:

  • Way bigger text boxes (text should match size of the pdf or bigger).
  • Way bigger check boxes (with Xs instead of checkmarks as the symbol appears bigger on pdf)
  • Removed redundant page
  • Added Reputation sheet
  • Added fillable Followers sheet (in case you wanna hire mercenaries, NPC companions, etc)
  • Hit Location tracker replaced with that of the non-human sheet, that is to say, a neat editable list.
  • Weapons replaced with Weapon Categories based the tables that list them on pg. 60 and onwards from the RQG Book of Weapons and Equipment. These still have fillables if you want to add extra specifics or if you want stuff like shields to still be segregated by size.
  • Added extra text boxxes to 'Other Skills' as well as to lengthen writing space all around a bit.

Hope this is helpfull to new players and GMs alike.

Has anyone actually played longer campaign in one of the less explored parts of Gorantha?

Has anyone actually played longer campaign set in lands mostly unexplored in official materials outside Guide to Glorantha ? What was your experience? Where it was set in ? Did you use homebrew version of "modern" character creation with stuff like character history? What materials have you worked with? Which starting date did you use? Did you use Hero Wars plot hooks from Guide to Glorantha?

Edit: Sorry for jarring typo in title.

I made a free, browser-based RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha character creator

Hi all! I've been building a free web tool that walks you through RQG adventurer creation step by step, and it's ready for other people to try:

https://desilatorrx.github.io/runequest-glorantha-character-creator/

It follows the core rulebook's eight steps. It does the math and checks the rules as you go:

  • Homeland: all six core homelands and the Praxian tribes, including tribal and regional modifiers.
  • Runes: elemental affinities, Power/Form runes and the 50 bonus points, with the characteristic bonuses (including the option to put them on CHA).
  • Characteristics: roll in the app or enter your own rolls, with the low-roll top-up.
  • Occupation and cult: all 20 occupations and 23 cults, with starting skills, favored passions, spirit magic (CHA limit, associated cults), special Rune spells, POW sacrifice for extra Rune points, and sorcery for Philosophers and Lhankor Mhy.
  • Equipment: your occupation's starting kit is added free, weapons and armor are tracked per hit location, and encumbrance is handled, including stowing spare gear on your mount.
  • Adventurer sheet: printable. Click any skill, characteristic, rune or spell to see how its number is built.

No account or install. Characters are saved in your browser, and you can export them as JSON. It works on phones too.

It doesn't reproduce rules text, so you'll still need the book. Spell and skill descriptions are short one-line summaries with page references. Family history is logged rather than rolled: you roll it from the book and enter the results.

It's an unofficial fan project, free, and open source:
https://github.com/DesilatorRx/runequest-glorantha-character-creator

I'd love feedback, especially corrections where I've got a rule or number wrong. Tell me the page and I'll fix it. I have only played the starter solo game so I'm really really new at this. Be kind.

What did you think of Lands of RuneQuest: Sartar?

Was the wait worth it? Does it provide details on the villages? Does it list the names of all the clan chiefs? Are there any reviews out there?

Fillable non-humanoid/monster sheets?

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a fillable pdf sheet for non-humanoids/monsters (for hit locations different than humanoids)? A fillable Squad sheet for non-humanoids would also be pretty useful.

Geas, Redress, Consequence + DragonNewtS

Post image
18 Upvotes

I also invented two new Runequest Glorantha mechanics I may publish after some testing. Paths and violations of Path and redress in gaming stats terms. I am decoupling this from a geas in my earlier edit. A path could also be given to a player as a curse.
What if one has a Path against killing and does things to detract from that path or reduce the odds of achieving the tasks of path or reaching the destination of PATH? Then some of their stats and % could be "off" i.e. minused because of being wracked with guilt and disharmony.
And they would have to take redress steps i.e. financially or otherwise helping the violent target's family, related charitable acts, etc. till the geas violation is corrected.
And in the case of a DragonNewt case the PATH is often a task to be completed to evolve. Things that go against PATH must be redressed in addition to task completion to evolve. The geas assign a negative score per geas violation and a positive score to redress actions.
If a DragonNewt dies with a negative on their PATH store they devolve into dinosaur form(s). If it is better than 0 they could evolve into next stage of DragonNewt.

New RQ:G Group Magic mechanics

My work in progress Runequest Glorantha mechanic is a way for players to attempt group magic. Glorantha has group magic like the syndics ban, closing of oceans, god creation, and moving Brithos (Island of Britain) to Glorantha. But no formal mechanics.
Group magic has an unknown cost the GM assigns in mortality attributes i.e. strength, intelligence, power that is unknown till act is attempted. For example If the STR cost was 20 and 3 STR 10 people attempt the spell, 2 of them may die. If the INT cost is 100 everyone attempting would became idiots unless their combined INT was over 100.
So convincing others to do the next attempt may be harder. Rituals and ingredients and sacrifices (in form of actual blood sacrifice, voluntary item of value destruction, voluntary attribute or skill reduction, or taking a few geases may reduce the cost, and/or increase the chances of success.
It fits literature and folklore on the subject. Group magic rituals are dangerous AF and change the caster forever may destroy their health, abilites or kill them whether sucessful or unsucessful.

To whoever ends up being the new mod team (open letter, sorta?)

I think itd be for the best if the sub was also modernized somewhat, as in adding flairs so its easier to find and engage with specific types of content (Art, memes, JC releases, group searching, etc). And maybe add something artsy to the icon and banner, ya know just so that its more appealing as a forum, even as a relatively new player (last year or so) I do fear for the longevity of the setting if some updates arent taken to make it easier for newbies to find and engage with.

Hope none of that comes off as dismissing the previous mod that left nor the current staff at all.

If D&D is the McDonald's or roleplaying, then what would RQ be?

I had a discussion earlied this year with someone, in which I described D&D as the McDonald's of roleplaying (and just reminded myself of it by using the term elsewhere today).

The guy asked me what restaurant Runequest would be, then? TBH I struggled to answer. How would you?

Notice: Open mod-position at r/runequest.

Hi, everyone. I'm bowing out of this sub. One of you might want to send the remaining mod-team a note if you want a completely non-paying position. Since I was the only semi-active mod here and I don't even know if the the other mods are still around, maybe r/redditrequest is worth keeping in mind too.
So..bye. May all your skill-dice roll low and your damage-dice high.

A Fire in the Darkness wyter fight questions

I'm preparing to run the final confrontation with the wyter Arimaxilus for my players, but I have questions that aren't answered in either the starter set or the core rulebook, at least that I can find.

How do you handle the wyter's attacks? Can a spirit envelop more than one character at a time? Is there any kind of an attack roll? (The magic drain says it takes place on the SR the victim is touched, so I wondered if there was a roll or if it's automatic.)

If engulfing more than one character, it uses its Madness attack against one, but magic drain would affect all of them?

Do spirit magic spells affect it, like Befuddle and Disruption? I would think so, since the magical damage from Bladesharp or Fireblade affect it.

The rules indicate that corporeal beings can't initiate spirit combat, so how do the characters deal with the wyter other than physical attacks augmented by magic? Do the wyter's Madness and magic drain attacks count as spirit combat?

Sorry for all the questions but I wasn't clear on how things should work. Thanks!

LoR: Sartar - Page Count

The pre-order price for Lands of Runequest: Sartar at my FLGS (and online in the UK) is quite a bit higher than the Dragon Pass or cults books. Is it just inflation or has there been any hint that it's going to be a bigger book than the others? I mean, I'll buy it regardless but just wondered.

New RQ:G (LFP)(Online)(Paid) RuneQuest

(LFP)(Online)(Paid) RuneQuest

I am looking for players to start an online RuneQuest campaign. I’m interested in running either the published adventures from Chaosium or Six Seasons in Sartar - whichever the players are more interested in.

This is a paid campaign through StartPlaying. The format would be theater of the mind through voice chat and dicebot on Discord.

Sessions would be biweekly on Wednesday nights, 6-9 PM CST.

Please see the attached link and checkout the link to my YouTube channel there for more info about me as a GM and my player expectations.

RQG at SaltCon

I was pretty new to RQG last spring and was hoping to play a session or two at SaltCon to get a better feel for the game, but there weren't any RQ events. I did play a lot of other games I wasn't familiar with - it was disappointing how many were DnD 5e reskins or AD&D throwbacks. Honestly, RQG has more mechanical modifications and improvements than several of the systems I sampled.

Anyway, I recently decided that if I wanted to ensure RQG has a presence at SaltCon next spring, I'd have to step up and run a couple sessions. They'll be taking event sign ups starting in a couple days, and I'm trying to decide if I should run existing scenarios or create them.

I like A Rough Landing, but it can't really be completed in 4 hours, especially for new players. Also, it doesn't showcase the bronze age element of RQ as heavily as I'd like. Is there another existing scenario or two that can reliably be completed in less than 4 hours and include a visible bronze age feel?

Thanks for your help!

Tell us about the RQG campaign you GMd or played

I hope we can give potential GMs some good examples in case they decide to follow our steps (preferrably campaigns with at least five 4h sessions). We can use this template:

  1. What was your previous knowledge/experience of Glorantha/RuneQuest? ✍️
  2. What books/resources did you use and why? 📚
  3. How did it go? 😀
  4. What would you do differently now? 🤔

I’ve been bouncing off Glorantha for nearly fifteen years, and I think I’ve finally realised why.

I was first introduced to it in the early 2010s through King of Dragon Pass. I loved that game, so naturally I started looking into the setting behind it. What I found was an incredibly opaque wiki and a very insular community of people who had already been discussing Glorantha with one another for decades.

Fair enough, I thought. This is obviously one of those settings where you have to make an investment. Buy some sourcebooks, sit down, read them properly, and eventually it will click.

Then the 2019 edition of RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha arrived. This was supposed to be RuneQuest and Glorantha properly returning to the foreground, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally get into it. So I bought the book.

And... nothing. Glorantha was somehow still completely impenetrable.

I read the Guide to Glorantha, and although it contains an enormous amount of information, much of it felt like reading a particularly dry Wikipedia article. Here is a nation. Here are some gods. Here is a historical event. Here is another culture. Lots of facts, very little sense of how I was actually supposed to inhabit this world.

For years I assumed this was basically my fault. Maybe I hadn’t read enough. Maybe I needed another sourcebook. Maybe there was some crucial text everyone else had read that would finally make everything fall into place.

Recently, though, it occurred to me that this isn’t incidental to the game. This is what Glorantha really is about.

RuneQuest: Glorantha sells itself on its most spectacular ideas: you can travel into the realm of myth, interact with gods, reenact ancient stories, alter reality through Heroquesting, and participate in this enormous mythological world.

But the game as actually presented is much more interested in something else: you are a member of a highly particular society, embedded in a clan, tribe, cult, kinship network and system of obligations. Your character is not primarily an unattached fantasy adventurer wandering around looking for trouble. They exist inside an intensely contextualised world, and much of the setting is supposed to be understood through that social position.

That's all well and good, but the problem is that the game then seems reluctant to give you the information you would need to understand that context.

What does ordinary domestic life look like? What are the actual customs governing marriage, property, inheritance, feuds, hospitality, cattle ownership, compensation, kinship and law? What are the everyday expectations placed upon you by your clan? What does being a member of a cult actually mean socially, beyond having particular Rune affinities and spells? How does a normal person understand the myths which supposedly structure their entire existence? On the opposite end of the scale, how does Heroquesting actually work?

These seem to me like the two things you most need explained if Glorantha is supposed to function as intended: the extremely mundane social world your character inhabits, and the extremely mythological world which gives that society meaning. Yet the source material is bizarrely elusive.

I know the designers are aware that RuneQuest has an accessibility problem. The revised/streamlined version, apparently cutting back things like shamanism and sorcery, suggests they recognise that the game can overwhelm new players. But that's not the real problem.

You could remove half the magic systems, and I would still have the same difficulty if the game continues to tell me that my character's clan, cult, ancestors, customs and myths are enormously important while giving me surprisingly little practical help understanding how those things shape ordinary play.

In fact, I think the sheer amount of lore can disguise the problem. Glorantha has reams and reams of information, but having lots of information is not the same thing as providing the information a player actually needs.

After all these years, I’ve started wondering whether there is also a basic mismatch between what attracted me to Glorantha and what Glorantha actually wants to be. I was attracted by the promise of this enormous mythological Bronze Age fantasy world: strange gods, Heroquests, ancient empires, weird cosmology, journeys into myth.

But perhaps what the game really expects you to be excited about is playing a bunch of strange cattle-bothering Bronze Age people whose individualism is subordinate to their immediate community, arguing about livestock, clan obligations, marriages, feuds and ritual propriety.

I'm sure that appeals to some people, but I wonder how they get on, because the books don't sure don't seem to help.

First time Runequester

Hello all,

I just bought the Starter Set and wow - I'm impressed. For the price Chaosium is calling, I exptected 1-2 booklets and some pregens, but the box is PACKED. It's a shame, the system isn't more popular.

I know a Revised rulebook will be released Q1 2027, but before I buy it - are there any rulebooks/supplements I should definetly consider having before starting a "serious" campaign?

What is your favorite or most Glorantha-specific rule?

For me it's augmentation. I feel it's absolutely perfect flavor for the setting, drawing on a Rune or Passion at a moment the character deems important. It's also just a great mechanic to allow players a way to bump up their chances of success with a below average skill.

When introducing RuneQuest to new players, it's one of the things they've always been excited about.

Glorantha An idea for a twist on the mostali

Many people hate the Mostali for being stone-hearted automatons . But what they forget is stone used to be alive in the God Time and the death of Stone when the spike was destroyed. The dwarves believe Mostal is dead, but other tribes say he lives. And no other deity was closer to his people than Mostal. They bear his name and worked directly for him. The dwarves believe Mostal to be dead for he would not leave them otherwise. Many even came to doubt Mostal was even a singular entity and i stead said he was the world machine himself. As the Mostali are made in Mostal’s image his depression and coldness came to them as well. How can stone hearts beat when Stone is dead?

How's this RuneQuest edition by Mongoose?

Hi folks, I'd love to know in how far Mongoose's RuneQuest version ist different from, let's say, RuneQuest third edition by Avalon Hill or even the current RuneQuest in Gloranta edition? Can you bring me up to speed? Thx.
