Just bought my 1st machine for $100. Not sure if I got a good deal or not.

It’s a concept 2 but looks older. Maybe it’s been taken care of. Not sure of the parts are still universal. Did I get a fair price or ripped off? Paid $105

I love the sport but hate the team

I’ve been in a really difficult spot recently where I really like the sport: enjoying both the process of getting faster, rowing on the water, and when my program does well in the spring.

Recently I’ve just felt so discouraged by my team and my coach. For the team, I think of myself as pretty outgoing, but I’ve been on the team for two seasons at this point and I just find it so hard to connect with anyone, or feel my presence wanted by any of my team mates. I also delt with active bullying by some of these guys when I was a first-year. Edit: no one really treats me poorly, it just feels like no one even attempts to go out of their way to talk to me or include me in group dinners or nights out, etc). I feel like a ghost on the team.

As for the coach, he used to be super nice to me and pushed me towards huge gains. Recently, it feels like he’s been fairly hostile to me, lacking any sympathy or understanding for any external factors (for the whole team, not just me), constantly saying we’re never good enough, and tearing into us when a practice doesn’t meet his standards. He’s beginning to feel super Toxic.

TLDR: I don’t feel like the team wants me around, and the coach is getting more toxic by the day

Edit: college athlete with some options but they would require transferring

Brown unyielding at HOCR?

What is going on with the brown women? Only one of their crews (2V8) got a penalty but there are videos of both of their fours unyielding and getting in the way of faster crews at various parts of the Charles… Do their coaches teach their coxswains to aggressively steer or is that just the kind of people they have in their team? It seemed like a little bit of shitshow this weekend

Favorite head races

I would like to do some masters racing in the single next year. I absolutely do not want to go to Head of the Charles - sitting out in a congested Charles River basin, in a single, in Boston, when it's <45 degrees with 20+ mph wind gusts is quite literally how I imagine hell on earth.

So please tell me - what are some of your favorite non-HOCR races on the eastern half of the US?

Specifically, I am looking for sheltered courses with a reasonable probability of pleasant conditions. Bonus points if it's somewhere fun to visit for a weekend.

I don't need lectures about rowing being an outdoor sport, or advice to learn to deal with rough conditions, etc. I am doing this for fun, and I am looking to choose some races which maximize the probability of having a relatively fun experience.

Why did so many boats crash yesterday? Was it poor coxing or just all random? Some boats were totaled.

Erg Post Trying to consistently incorporate rowing into my health training!

Hello all, first-timer.
We bought our C2 a few years ago in an effort to get in better shape and like many folks (I assume) used it sparingly...but not enough where it was collecting dust. After a weight loss journey composed of a lot of daily walking, some running and rowing, and a doctor prescribed glp-1 at the lowest dose (overweight and type 1 diabetic, always good A1Cs though) I lost 60 lbs (25% body weight) in a year.

Over the last (almost) 2 years now I've maintained that but what had originally started out as a plan to lose weight by walking, rowing, a better diet, and maintaining muscle mainly became me focused only on cardio and diet. Being heavy for so many years embedded a desire in me to lose/keep off weight as my primary focus. I put in a lot of work and a weekly shot (2.5mg tirzepatide) obviously helped for the weight and T1D management but I knew I needed to start lifting again and incorporate more variety in my cardio.

In the last month or so I've been consistently lifting weights again and trying to become a better (and more frequent) rower. I've tried to really work on form and figuring out having strokes that balanced pace and more distance in my sessions. All my random workouts I'd usually cap out at 20' or 4.5k so I decided to slow down a little, go for longer, and did 30' non-stop getting to 6k. After watching and reading a lot more I found that I needed to improve the beg. of my stroke, using my legs more, and went almost 6k while significantly upping my pace.

Today, after my weight training I was gonna do a 15-20' row to cool down but I had somewhere to be so I decided instead to do a short session and try out doing a 2k. I've never done a specific row like that before (mainly been "just row") but I wanted to see where I was at, even if it was after 60' of heavy lifting.

I had no clue what my time would be or what pace I could maintain but I knew I shouldn't go too hard in the first 500m because then the final 75% would suck. From the 1.4-1.8k I was starting to really feel it but (SPM and pace creeping up to 2:07) so I tried to get back to 2:00 and finish strong.
It would've been nice to be under 8:00 but seeing as I didn't have a clue what time I could get and it was at the end of my total workout instead of the beginning I was pleasantly surprised.

Here's to more good rows in the future and gaining strength to live a healthy, long life!

3 yrs later, we’re bring our rowing game back, sequel to WeRow: PowerTen

Three years ago, Jason and I made a rowing game and shared it here. The feedback from this community made that period one of the most exciting and fulfilling parts of the project for us.

We later released a 2.0 update that expanded the graphics and gameplay, but life got busy before we could build some of the ideas we were most excited about—eights, a Venice course, Concept2 integration, and more.

Now we’ve decided to return to it and build the sequel.

Development is no longer the limiting factor. Our focus now is making the game genuinely feel like rowing: the rhythm of the boat, the decisions during a race, and especially the personality and energy a coxswain brings to a crew, as well as adopting those feedbacks.

Here are a few early in-game screenshots. There’s still plenty to refine, but it feels good to see the project moving again.

We may eventually invite a few coxswains from the community to contribute authentic calls and voices on a voluntary, fully credited basis. If that sounds fun to you, feel free to reach out!

Off the Water Newbie

Hi. I'm a complete Newbie to the ' Rowing machine scene' (is there one?).

Just seeking some advice, please.

I've just bought a Merach machine, for home use, (as it's now Autumnal here in the UK) and want to develop a good workout pattern, which fits around my life.

Currently I run, swim, cycle and boulder, so have a good level of fitness (for a 52 yr old male).

So far I've been rowing every other day, for the last week, and my pace is 3.8 km in 20 mins. I thought this was ok, but upon googling it I found it's quite low.

How do I improve? Row harder, but slower or crank the resistance up?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Need Your Input for My SPM Monitor Project

Hey guys, still working on my SPM monitor project. As I’m finalizing the first build of the software, I would like some inputs from the community for some of the functions/features on the device:

1.     Sensitivity VS. Stability for Split Data:

I’m using a 10hz GPS chip to handle location data. In full refresh rate mode, the resolution of speed data is very high such that it can show the speed changes during recovery and drive phases (and yield a rather continuous speed curve with valleys and peaks).

Simply showing the sensitive speed changes is very intrusive as it is less readable in competitive environment and that’s why in default setting Split is tuned to behave the same as it would’ve been on an SC.

However, I’m still thinking how I should incorporate this more accurate speed data into the real time dashboard without being too interruptive. The current plan is to have a secondary indicator that shows the overall gain of speed for each stoke while maintaining the overall stability of Split data. Let me know if you have other thoughts.

2.     Heading Stability:

In my test runs, unstable headings resulted from unbalanced power output between left and right will yield huge power lost and longer overall distance in a standard 2km course (e.g. highest I measure is around 14m out of 2000m from a pro rower). That’s why I created a widget specifically to monitor heading drift and power loss of each drive.

The current widget features an arrow that points towards the direction of drift and shows the effective power (reduced by the drift) of each stoke. I would like to know if you think the visualization is good enough and if you don’t, what is preferred by you.

3.     LED sync:

The LED bar is synced to target SPM for a specific section for now (i.e. pre-programmed before section). It is also customizable to sync with heart rate/ heading drift or power output etc. Still thinking other ways of using the LED light.

4.     Impeller compatibility

The device has a modular connector on the top and it can take either GPIO or USB standard signal from peripheral devices such as impeller (with a tiny convertor board that I’m also working on). However, I do think there is chance to change the whole setup to wireless connection. Do you think that’s worth the effort? Or would you rather stay with the wire connection.

Post grad year

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m currently a high school senior hoping to get recruited for lightweight rowing at an Ivy League school or another highly selective university like MIT or Georgetown.

My academic stats are:
- 1540 SAT (790 Math)
- 4.04 weighted GPA / approximately 3.55 unweighted through junior year
- Mostly As, A-s, and B+s in high school
- B+ in AP Calculus AB junior year
- Enrolled in a community college Early College Program, where I earned approximately a 3.0 GPA junior year

I’ll include a picture of my transcript through junior year

I recently went through an academic pre-read at Tufts and was told that my academics were not within the range they could support for recruitment. They only received my high school transcript and SAT, not my separate community college grades.

For senior year, I’m taking U.S. History 2 Honors, Pottery, and Gym at my high school, along with four community college courses. I could potentially add AP Calculus BC to my high school schedule.

I’m considering taking a postgraduate year at Salisbury School after graduation to improve my rowing and academics, then applying to colleges the following fall.

My questions are:
If I earn straight As in both my high school and community college classes senior year, could that realistically make up for my previous grades enough to pass an Ivy League or MIT athletic pre-read?

Would adding AP Calculus BC significantly strengthen my application, or should I prioritize getting straight As in my existing classes?

If I attend Salisbury for a PG year, will admissions primarily evaluate my completed high school transcript, or could my PG grades help even though I’d be applying early in the school year?

Has anyone been in a similar situation where a strong senior year or PG year changed their academic eligibility for recruitment?

I’m trying to figure out whether spending an additional year at a boarding school could realistically improve my chances at a top university, or whether my earlier grades would still hold me back.

I’d appreciate any insight, especially from recruited athletes, former admissions officers, or anyone familiar with Ivy League athletic pre-reads.

Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - October 19, 2026

Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!

What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!

Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!

Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.

Also, please check our wiki pages:

This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Updated with HOCR, connected a lot of previously unconnected teams. Updated based on all race results from various boats with a recency bias.

Fours are hard to rank because line ups are often variable at different regattas due to some teams double racing and other teams not.
