Stop buying sh*t and go to the dermatologist

I am a 30 year-old female. I have always had rosacea but never had a problem with acne or bumps. About a year and a half ago I developed “acne”. After so much research and going through 1 million products. I got a proper diagnosis of papulopustular rosacea. The dermatologist first prescribed just metronidazole, which did not work for me. Saw another dermatologist and they gave me the holy Grail triple cream. Has ivermectin metronidazole and Azael acid (prescription grade). Been using it for two months now and I have my old skin back. Never going to get rid of the redness, but the bumps and texture have significantly gotten better.

Hope this helps!

Weekly 'Do I have rosacea?' advice request thread. Please post here instead of making a new thread! Oct 12

If you think you might have something like rosacea and are looking for advice about whether you should seek professional care, please post your inquiry in this thread instead of creating a new post. To keep requests from crowding out other discussion in r/Rosacea, separate posts will be automatically removed and the posters directed here instead.

Rules:

  1. Please limit answers to things like, "Yup, that looks like it could be rosacea to me, maybe you should to see a doc" or "No, it looks like it could be something else."
  2. Refrain from amateur diagnoses, speculation, and armchair medical advice, especially non-rosacea related.

REMINDER: THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF. Although redditors try to be helpful, only doctors can diagnose rosacea and it often takes a specialist like a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. Rosacea looks like a lot of things, and a lot of things look like rosacea; some of these things are potentially serious. It is impossible for amateurs to diagnose rosacea reliably from pictures or descriptions of symptoms, and this thread is not intended as a substitute for professional care.

No matter what response you get here, if your symptoms have been persistent and you're concerned that you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor to get a real answer.

Hi guys you all helped me with my skin when I had type 2 rosacea and I’ve since used ivermectin and it’s cleared. This is my sister’s skin, she has tried almost everything. Now trying azealic acid and it just keeps getting worse. She uses a simple skin care routine and has stopped using actives as she was using a retinol and her skin didn’t like it but since stopping it’s got worse for her. Doctors are crap just want some advice/ if anyone’s skin looks or has looked similar and they can help? Thank you

Is that even rosacea? Crazy flushing for hours, incl neck Spoiler

My dermatologist diagnosed me with rosacea in 30seconds by looking at some photos two weeks ago, but sometimes I wonder if it’s really „just“ Rosacea. I have daily flushing (can’t really avoid stuff like stressful work, sports, cleaning, cooking, pure existing haha) and if it’s really bad it stays for hours and hours without calming down.

Today, I just had a coffee and did a DIY project and first one cheek was turning bright red, then the other, then the whole face and even down my neck - only had a white ring around my mouth.

Do you guys really get such severe flushing almost daily?

Got prescribed metronidazole gel two weeks ago (though I think I rather have type 1) and so far no improvement

Light/Laser Help deciding on pursuing IPL treatment Spoiler

Post image
• Upvotes

Ive been considering pursuing IPL treatment for my mild type 1 rosacea. I flush when I exercise or in warm environments like a crowded bar. My flushing has been getting better overtime, but it bothers me greatly. For the first time I am ordering a Oxymetazoline and niacinimide combo cream as I have heard good things, but I know it only lasts a few hours and can lead to rebound redness. I’m not sure if pursuing IPL is worthwhile and wanted to ask if anyone else with a similar situation has had any luck. Thanks!

What exactly does azaleic acid do for rosacea?

And do you need to have a healthy skin barrier to tolerate it? Or is it ok to use even if you have barrier damage?

Has anyone experienced blisters/burns from Vbeam. Began with intense bruising, swelling then blistering. If so, how long did it take to heal and did it scar?

Skincare Give me your holy grail skincare

• Upvotes

As the tin says!

I’ve been on ivermectin for just over 12 weeks and the acne does not seem to be improving. I’m considering stopping this. The remainder of my skincare consists of the following:

Cerave hydrating cleanser morning and night.

Night: ivermectin cream (prescribed)
Morning: Avene thermal water spray, azelaic acid (Inkey list), beauty of joseon suncream.

Have you got any recommendations for things that may work better? I’m fed up of looking like a red and spotty teenager at 37!!!

P.S I HATE feeling sticky/greasy, that also seems to break me out even more.

How does someone develop rosacea? I heard it's genetic but how does it appear?

Probably a very stupid question as Im very uniformed. Rosacea is apparently very common in my family as a number of cousins, mother and her sisters all have it to a degree.
I was 14 (16 now) and I remember flushing a ton randomly when I did stuff I could do without flushing bad a few years before. I had a slight baseline and was diagnosed but I dont know what I did to develop it? Very confused on this type of stuff so apologies for that.

Routine Azelaic acid shortage is so frustrating

I don’t want to begrudge anyone the benefits of azelaic acid, but as someone with rosacea, I literally need it at prescription strength to keep my skin stable. It’s so frustrating for every pharmacy to be in shortage because of a TikTok craze. 😭 Apparently the whole “use tretinoin with AA for glowy skin” trend has depleted prescription stock.

Anyway, I know this will pass. Wishing everyone good luck getting your prescriptions filled in the meantime!

(And yes, I know OTC options exist. My rosacea really needs the strong stuff, as I’m sure many of you have found, too!)

I’ve been experiencing red cheeks since middle school and it’s so embarrassing. I constantly look like I’m blushing, my face always feels hot and it’s so hard to explain away. No matter what I do or say someone thinks I’m blushing about someone else and starts something. I just want to not always have to explain this when I’m talking to people.

Skincare Azelaic acid itching?

Just added some azelaic acid 10% into my routine about 3 days ago: Cetaphil face wash, apply layer of metro gel, apply thin layer of AA, apply cerave moisturizer.

I must say my forehead is really itchy.

I tried using AA a few years back and I never had the itching problem. Is it because I’m using it with metro gel? Or itching just a common side effect with some brands?

Doxycycline worsening gut

Hey guys, my derm prescribed me 12 weeks of Doryx 50mg doxycycline once a day for type 2 rosacea and I finished 5 weeks of it, however in the last week (week 5) I experienced increased bowel movements and mild diarrhea (loose stools, not completely watery but a bit) which was odd because I didn’t experience this in the first 4 weeks (also note 50mg is comparatively low when considering other doses like 100mg and 200mg).

I don’t know if this is because of the accumulated effect of Doxy up to now and my gut finally couldn’t take it or something. Should I take a break from taking doxy and should I resume taking it after this break? Will there be any negative impacts of stopping the medication 5 weeks in (eg being immune to the antibiotics).

I also want to note that I don’t seem to have any noticeable difference in my rosacea during these 5 weeks compared to before I started… starting to think nothing works for me now (thought doxy was going to work….)

Has anyone gone through a similar experience and what did you do? Thanks I’m so worried

Stubborn Type 2 rosacea

*The following is not medical advice* (it’s just what worked for me)

I don’t know who needs to hear this but if I can help someone battling super stubborn type 2 rosacea (the pustular kind) then it’s worth a shot!

Basically I was diagnosed with type 2 pustular rosacea in 2022 by a dermatologist. I was getting persistent tiny white red pustules that would itch but then go away after a few days typically. If I popped them (which I know we’re not supposed to do) they’d clear up even faster lol

Anyways I figured out that dairy was a huge trigger for me - specifically milk or cheese because either of those two things would cause my to have a flare up the same day or next with tons of tiny itchy red bumps with white pustules all over my t zone and jawline. So I started avoiding that.

Stress is also a big trigger for me causing flare ups (which was evident months leading up to my wedding 🤡)

I tried it ALL. Ivermectin, azelaic acid, metronidazole, red light therapy, tretinoin even low does doxycycline (40mg slow release)— everything consistently for 6+ months and nothing made the flare ups stop or better.

One thing that would randomly help calm a flare up down was protopic ointment (which I was initially prescribed for an episode of perioral dermatitis but then started using on flares)

Anyways THEN I was so desperate leading up to my wedding that my derm prescribed me higher dose doxycycline 100mg BID X 3 weeks then QD ongoing and that worked like MAGIC. Cleared me RIGHT UP and my skin was glowing. Once I stopped it after the wedding I flared right back up and the derm told me the only solution was to stay on the 100mg once a day.

But I KNEW I did not want to be on an antibiotic like that long term knowing the risks with it and gut disruption etc.

I also did 3 microneedling treatments when I wasn’t flaring to try and “thicken” my skin a bit more because I felt like all my flare ups had thinned out and damaged my skin so much.

I did a ton of research on the causes of rosacea and what mine seemed to be - I knew because the protopic worked on it that it must be immune/ maybe histamine related.

Anyways after my deep dive with Claude on “natural replacements” for doxycycline, it suggested trying zinc! I read on some of the other benefits of zinc and thought why not. I’ve tried everything else anyways.

So I started taking a zinc supplement in picolinate/bisglycinate form 25mg with copper every day for around a month and the first week in my flare ups were almost non existent - I was shocked!! Same with the second and third week where I knew it was not a coincidence.

Once my skin consistently calmed down I immediately started using Arazlo every three days to try and further improve my skin quality and thickness and after around 3 months of using the zinc daily I now only take it around three times a week and my skin is SO much better managed.

Certain times of my cycle or stress/ dairy will still cause me to get 1-2 spots but they clear up in a day or two now. I also consistently use Arazlo once a day now. I still also use azelaic acid in the mornings to help with pigmentation mostly but it doesn’t do much for pustules.

I hope this helps someone!! Obviously check with your doctor if there could be any concerns with you taking zinc but I get routine blood work as well so I knew it was fine.

Goodluck everyone!! It does get better 😭😭😭

How does working out affect your rosacea?

I'm at the gym regularly, and I feel like my rosacea may have gotten worse? I go almost purple at times (where I take a break of course) but if I'm not purple Im nearing it. My baseline has gotten worse but Im unsure if it was because of me exercising. Honestly Im not gonna stop from the redness just checking if someone has it too.

Unknown skin condition Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I need the community’s help, please! For years now I am struggling with a skin condition that derms can’t figure out. I am off accutane now for 2 years but my skin has gotten extremely sensitive. It’s very dry but skin care products trigger my skin. Just leaving it alone would be best I noticed, but not being able to wash it also gives me a weird skin texture and frankly also dry skin.. I can use a completely new product once without problems. But as soon as I use something a second time it triggers red bumps, sometimes itchy, sometimes with a rash (see pictures), then after a very short period of time they downsize to a tiny pimple like lesion but no white heads! The products I use more frequently (when I have to) also leave these bumps, sometimes within minutes, sometimes within hours! It’s so weird! I was told it’s not an allergy to specific ingredients and also it’s supposedly not rosacea.. I was told it’s my skin barrier and that I should try zero therapy but I did that for years now and it’s not getting better at all! So, dear community, do you know this issue? Have you got an idea what could help? I’m so frustrated -.- TYSM!!

Attending a wedding in 3 weeks. Should I continue metrogel?

I’m on week 3 of using metrogel 0.75% and I’m gonna be a bridesmaids. My skin was clear for the past week but now I’m getting 3 big angry papules all of a sudden that won’t go away :( I’m already so stressed bc of the planning I don’t know what to do.

Should I continue ? I haven’t changed anything. Why is it getting worse?

Does your rosacea look like this? Spoiler

This is how my skin has always looked and ive flip flopped between thinking I just have thin skin and rosey cheeks to thinking I actually have rosacea. Getting into a derm takes many many months if not years if you can actually get a referral where I live. Im looking at getting laser at an aesthetic dermatology office and wondering if anyone had redness like me that they were actually able to get rid of? I don’t want to waste 1000$ or more just to still have red skin haha

ROSACEA SUCKS Struggling with almost daily flushing and unpredictable patterns (using metronidazole for 2 weeks now). Anyone else? Help I’m new to this Spoiler

Hi everyone! Sorry for rambling but I have these flushes now almost daily for 3 months and I am so DONE already

I’ve been experiencing facial flushing almost daily for the past 3 months, with varying intensity and patterns, and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

My triggers seem completely unpredictable. Sometimes it’s stress, random work meetings, exercise, cooking, cleaning, but other times I’m literally just existing, reading a book, or scrolling on my phone. Sun exposure doesn’t seem to be a major trigger for me.

The flushing patterns are also really weird:

* Sometimes both cheeks and my chin turn bright red symmetrically
* Other times, one or two random, small red patches suddenly appear and disappear again.
* Sometimes it starts at the outer edges of my face and/or chin while my cheeks are only light red. Gives me a very red patchy look. but then gradually one cheek turns bright red and then the next follows. Happened today after vacuuming, the outer edges of my right face and my chin became very red, then gradually calmed down after about an hour. But after 1 hour (just scrolling on my phone) my right cheek suddenly turned bright red, and almost 1.5 hours into the episode, my left cheek joined in too. Still going very strong 2hours in.

The redness usually feels hot, sometimes tingling, and can last for hours. My self esteem is not doing great 🫠

I’ve been prescribed Rozex (metronidazole) gel, which I’ve been applying every evening for about 2–2.5 weeks. However, I mainly experience flushing and don’t really have any acne-like bumps or pustules (yet? Skin is not great though). Also been doing a skincare for over a month now (hydrator serum in the morning, a calming serum with 5% azelaic acid, barrier cream)

Does anyone else experience these constantly changing flushing patterns, and EVERYTHING being a trigger (just life, at this point). Is this common with rosacea? And has anyone with primarily flushing symptoms had success with metronidazole?

Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences!

My flushing is bad and I have a hard time looking into a mirror, and then I get comments telling me I look sunburned or did I go skiing. Why would you comment on a strangers face?

Skincare How similar is 15% otc azelaic acid vs prescription ones?

Think theramid or geek and gorgeous otc options. So I'm explicitly not talking about things like the remedy one with a derivative.

Low dose Doxy vs microdose accutane for PP

Hi all,
I’ve posted in this group a couple times already so thank you to everyone who has been kind enough to respond! I think I’m at the point where topicals are just not enough anymore for my type 2 PP rosacea. I have an appointment this week with my derm to get an accutane prescription (I’m past the 30 day waiting period). We were going to do a microdose of 10 mg. I’m feeling very hesitant about it and know that some people have seen success with a low dose of Doxycycline (40 mg), which is something I have not yet tried. I originally didn’t want to go on doxy because my derm was offering it at a higher dose and I did not want it to impact my gut health. However after sifting through this group, I realized that a 40 mg dose is sub antimicrobial. Just wanted to hear any experience of one or the other so I can try to make a decision. Thank you in advance!

Side note, I already have quite a few health issues so that’s why I’m worried about accutane. Interestingly enough, I was in the hospital this past week and was on a ton of anti-inflammatories and my skin miraculously cleared along with any redness. And I wasn’t even using my topicals at that time. Now that I’m back to my routine and not on those medications anymore, I’m starting to get pustules, papules and redness again. Just thought I’d add that bit!
